Heart Shaped Dipped Krispies

Heart Krispies

Holy WOW, people!!

Where the heck did you all come from!?  I had no idea so many of you were sneaking around.  I’m glad I could coax you out of the shadows with a giveaway. I only wish I had more bags to give away… Stick around, I’ve got more stuff to give.  For reals.

In the mean time, how about a little Valentine inspired treat?  When I think of Valentine’s Day, I usually want to run and hide.  Red roses, pink boxes of candy, cheap champagne… count me way way way way out.  The one thing about Valentine’s day I can support is homemade heart shaped treats.

And so, with the charmingly kitchy elements of Valentine’s Day in mind, I bring you Heart Shaped Dipped Krispies.

Heart Krispies

Ok… we pretty much all know what Rice Krispie treats taste like.  Close your eyes and imagine them dipped in chocolate.  There… wasn’t that easy!?    Delicious.  Simple as that.

The best part about throwing together Rice Krispie Treats is rediscovering the joy of having a bowl of this cereal with cold milk and a hearty sprinkle of granulated sugar.  It’s an absolute dream.  Snap, crackle, pop never hurt anybody.

Heart Krispies

First things first.  Pour yourself a bowl of cereal.  You’ll need a spoon. Where’s mine?  Dunno.

Now get to making the treats.

Heart Krispies

Rice Krispie Treats

Print this Recipe!

1 stick (8 tablespoons) unsalted butter

1 bag (that’s 16 ounces, right?) mini marshmallows

7 cups Crisped Rice cereal

pinch of salt

1 1/2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips

Heart Krispies

Butter a 9×13-inch pan well.

In a large sauce pan melt butter.  Add pinch of salt and stir.  Add mini marshmallows and stir until completely melted.  Add cereal and stir so that all of the cereal is coated in marshmallow buttery goodness.  While still hot, scoop into greased pan.  Press with the back of a buttered spoon or butter your finger tips and use your hands to press the rice krispies batter into the pan.

Place in the fridge to cool.  This took me about 30 minutes.

Once cool, use a good spatula to remove the entire slab of rice krispies from the pan.  Place on a clean table.  Using a heart shaped cookie cutter, cut out whatever size hearts you like.  Place on waxed paper.

Boil a few inches of water in a medium sauce pan.  Place chocolate chips in a heat proof bowl and place the bowl over the boiling water, creating a double boiler.  Melt the chocolate.

Dip one side of the hearts in the melted chocolate and place then chocolate side up on the waxed paper.  Let sit for several hours to harden or place in the fridge to hurry along the process.

I agree with you on the whole Valentine’s thing. If you love someone aren’t you supposed to tell them every day, not just one specific day of the year? I am following suit and making the tasty homemade treats for family and friends. I stumbled upon your Red Velvet cookies yesterday, I know everyone will love them! Thanks for the recipes!

Amen to the Valentine’s Day run&hide – if only the DB wasn’t so hyped on it.

These are absolutely adorable, and I think I’ll make them this weekend as a surprise treat for the both of us. Oreos are no longer allowed in the house, but after these I don’t think he’ll mind. ;)

I have never liked V-Day either…it’s commercialized, over hyped and tinged with ickiness. But any excuse to bake, I’m there! These look like the perfect little treat to make for my office!

These look SO yummy! I’d have to skip the chocolate, though…Hubbums hates it when people insist on adding stuff to his rice krispie treats! LOL! Just as the folks at Starbucks! LOL!

i am quite the amateur baker and my husband has no sweet tooth.
this always leaves me in a dilemma. even for the past few weeks i’ve been trying so hard to think of the perfect sweet treat to make for him and i have no idea why…. maybe it is that i am secretly making it for myself !

i have been one of the lurking readers for several months now, by the way! LOVE your writing and recipes and oh the pictures!

Mmm… these remind me of how every year in high school I made a whole bunch of SOMETHING heart shaped and gave them away to everyone I knew. One year I made pink play dough hearts!
I think I might make your heart cookies though this year for my classes… mmm… yummy!

I love Rice Krispies..as a cereal, but have never liked the treats..weird, huh?
Oh well hubby likes the treats so I’ll make these for him :-)
And I’ll have to decide whether to use the Tivo cookie cutter, maple leaf cutter, or the gingerbread man one…I have no heart shaped ones lol

How cute! I too forget how quick and easy these are to whip up, and Valentine’s Day is as good a day as any to do it. What I don’t understand though, is how you continue to look so fabulous!? I couldn’t possible bake all of these wonderful goodies and not gain a half ton.

Thanks for your blog – I LURVE it!!

I made these for one of the twin’s valentine’s class party. My fingertips were killing me from pushing the metal cookie cutter down into the treats. I made 30 plus! I have also made a giant christmas tree rice krispie treart. Kids love ‘em!

Joy, these look beautiful. I love how they’re dipped individually, and not just cut from a chocolate covered slab. The drips down the sides are totally endearing!
Ok, so you obviously appreciate a good snap, crackle, and pop in a treat, so I’ll let you in on a little Dublin secret (this recipe comes from a very successful cafe over here and is – quite simply – the toast of the town. Too many will probably kill you, but you’ll die happy):

200g unsalted butter
6 Mars Bars (the large size – 65g each)
200g Rice Crispies
250g good milk chocolate

Chop the Mars Bars up small and melt together with the butter in a pan. When I say melt them together, you really have to melt them. It’ll take a while for the Mars Bar bits to dissolve completely, but keep stirring and heating until it’s a smooth gooey mass.

Stir in the Rice Crispies until every last one is smothered and glossy and press into whatever tin you’re using. Leave to set and cool a little before pouring the melted chocolate over. Refrigerate.

Eat them all.

I am in the school of “Don’t mess with my Rice Krispie Treats,” but I do like the idea of cutting them into hearts. Will have to check with my missus to see if she likes hers adulterated. If so, I’ll prob flavor the chocolate with some extract.

Thanks for the idea!

I absolutely LOVE, love, love Valentine’s Day. It’s pure joy to see all the beautiful colors and creative things people are doing. Kind of like these rice krispie treats. Thanks for sharing and I love your blog. I think it’s my new favorite.
P.S. I think it’s fun to have a day where you can go completely “over-board” on your loved ones. I have 4 kids and I like to drench them with love. Let’s be honest, I can’t do this every day, so I save a lot of x-tra love for that one very special day. I feel sad for those who dislike V-day.
Hopefully your treats will put everyone in the mood for love!

Yummy! Any thoughts on what to do with the “scraps”? The only thing I thought of was to cut them into squares and use them for chocolate fondue night. Of course, this isn’t very creative–so anyone have other ideas? Wouldn’t want to wasted a krispie treat. :)

Shan February 6, 2009 at 8:57 am

I did something similar earlier this week w/ Toll House Bar Cookies. After baking I put them in the freezer for about 20 min to cool them off quick. Then I used the cutter to cut out little hearts (it’s about 1-1.5 inches). Then I dipped the tops in the melted chocolate. They’ve been a HUGE hit at work.

My kids would LOVE these and I will definitely make some for them, but I will have to feast on cookies perhaps because I don’t love the marshmallows …. ewwwwwwww. Horse toenails.

Krispies also good with peanut butter in them and then with the chocolate topping…yum. but eww.
