On broken eggs and other such broken things

broken egg

I feel like I’ve been breaking things all day.

First there was the printer…. and then another printer.  Two printers… broken.

Then a simple trip to the restroom seemed to be enough to unhinge the entire door.

Now… my site is feeling a little broken as well.

Here’s what’s going on.  I’ll explain it as I understand it.

I’ve gotten a few emails from readers that their IP addresses have been blacklisted and blocked from my site.  Their questions were the same as mine:  what the heck!?

It turns out that the blacklisting scandal is a hosting problem.

The hosting company I have used has increased their level of security.  That’s good, right?  Well, yes and no.

See, there’s this company called Spamhaus.

Spamhaus is in charge of compiling giant lists of evil spamming IP addresses.  They then send these lists to my hosting company.  In turn, my hosting company will block that IP address, thus saving me from the spam nasties.

But Oh No!  Some of you and your IP addresses are getting on this Spamhaus list and you’re finding yourselves banned from my site!  This may not be your fault.  You may have inherited a bum IP address, as they change every once in a while.

Now what do we do?  Well, first I think we should have a good cry…. no?  Ok.  First we should have a doughnut.  Then, if you find that you get this error message on this site, or any other site,  you can check whether or not your on the naughty list here.  You can also email me with any dirty error messages you might have received and I’ll contact my hosting company.

I’m working my way away from broken.  Just wanted to let you know!

  1. I am not broken either….I would be sad. I discovered your site awhile back and I am so happy. If I find myself on a banned list I will be heartbroken, shell-cracked and print-busted!
I hope your tomorrows are all better. Here, have this band-aid. Tear it in half and place it on those printers. Better? Well, I tried.
    Here, have this cupcake.

  2. There’s a nice solution to the IP problem… subscribe to Joy’s feed in a web based RSS reader like Google Reader. Google fetches Joy’s posts, so you don’t have to miss out on any of the sweet treats! Once your IP address has changed or been unblocked, you can either click through the reader to the site to comment or go there directly!

I LOVE google reader, I can organize all of my feeds into categories and read one entire category at once, or a single blog, …. the possibilities are really endless and I don’t have time to cover them all.

  3. Hi Joy
I’ve had the same problem, too. At the beginning I thought I broked the pc :( in some way and I “fear” my husband’s reaction, but after a few search he reassured me…it’s not my fault :)) The real problem is that here (in Ireland) the IP addresses are allocated every time you turn on your modem…so in the last few days my IP has been blacklisted 4 times!!! Anyway in that occasion I simply restart the modem and everything is then fine… a little of work to do, but you worth it! Tomorrow will be another day, cheers

  4. Sarah, So true! Thank god we got back on in time to see those delicious oven baked fries.

Joy, thanks for letting us know. We felt like criminals when we saw “blacklisted”.

  5. So funny, my fellow Comedy Central employees and I were devastated! We didn’t know what we had done to incur Joy’s wrath. We were blocked for a couple of days, but we’re now back to obsess over poundcake and sables.

It all works out in the end!

  6. I hope your problem is fixed very soon! I can get to this post, but not to your homepage..? But thats fine because I still get to read your blog :)

  7. HI Joy,
Sorry to hear about all the broken things, I hope they all get fixed soon. I have one question, do you by any chance have a Sponge cake recipe? If so, please post it, im dying to make one. Thank you my dear,

  8. I hope your problem gets fixed soon!! I seem to have the breaking curse in my fingertips as well. Eek, I’m sure everything will be back to normal soon!
