It’s a Bloody Mary

IMG_0779

Have you ever watched Sex and the City 2 with a straight dude who is waaaaaay more into it than you?

I have.  That happened.

Have you ever thought about renting Steel Magnolias, buying a box of tissue and inviting this same gentlemen over… just to test the waters?  I have.  Duh.

Would Driving Miss Daisy be too far?  Eat, Pray, Love?

This is just craycray.  I need a Bloody Mary… and a few hours working on my Netflix queue.  I might have a winner here.

I happen to love a good Bloody Mary.  Duh.

There are all sorts of things going on in this drink: tomato juice, a little spice from horseradish and hot sauce, roundness from Worcestershire sauce and booooooze!

Honestly?  I’m in it for the salty goodness of the pickles and olives and caper berries.  It’s really the only way I ever want to eat a salad.

Have you ever made your own Bloody Mary?  It’s an investment but totally fun!  If you’re having company over this holiday season… you should totally impress them with your cocktail skills and pickle skewering.

  1. As long as you are SURE he’s strait…lol….go for the man who likes girl shows. Otherwise you will end up like me and your husband will one day teach your kids to love the 3 stooges, batman and starwars. And let’s not even get started on all the football that is watched in our house. I will take Sex and the City over any of the above any day/any time.

  2. PLEASE don’t leave out “Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood” Those girls totally get down with the Bloody Mary’s “Needs more Tabasco”

  3. SO excited to have found this recipe! We are having a Hurricane Irene party tomorrow and I totally plan on drinking this from sun up to sun down. YUM.

  4. JOY!!! My boyfriend puts Guinness in ours! Not a whole lot…if you are making two drinks you split a half a can between the two. Really adds to the flavor and thickness. We learned this trick from a bartender friend of ours. Absolutely fabulous!

  5. Living in Spain, I decided to do a Spanish version I call a Maria Sangrienta. I substitute the tomato juice for gazpacho…Magnífico!!

  6. hmm, that’s what I’ve been drinking this weekend. I can’t have a bloody mary without olive juice in it, I guess you would call that a dirty bloody mary. And pickled asparagus is a must too! I’m originally from Canada and I never heard of bloody mary’s before a couple of years ago but I think I like them better than caesars. Love the horseradish and clamato juice has a large content of high fructose corn syrup. Bloody mary’s make me feel like I’m doing something healthy, but not really. :)

  7. I don’t like Bloody Mary’s (please don’t hate me ;)), but I would totally try this recipe. It sounds like fun and good for guests over the holiday season and IT’S SO PRETTY!!! I like pretty drinks.

  8. HAHAHAHAH nooo joke, I am making your chewy molasses chocolate chip cookies and watching Steel Magnolias…been having a really hard time lately and woke up and decided I need two thing…. 1. chocolate and 2. a good cry!

  9. You have to try a splash of Claasen pickle juice in the Bloody Mary. I then garnish with a Claasen pickle. When I was trying to lose weight and had the late night munchies, I would make a virgin BM and it would fill me up. I HAVE to have the pickle juice in it though. Love the pictures!

  10. I’m like you Joy, its like a salad in a glass, and if I’m drinking bloody marys I’m not eating dinner. I have always said it was supper in a glass! lol Ok now two ppl in the last week have told me to try horseradish in my B/M and I LOVE LOVE LOVE horseradish! Gonna give this recipe a try on the Thanksgiving weekend! Thanks.

  11. I like your bloody mary recipe. Have you ever added a dash of beef broth? Some call that a bullshot- It thins it out a bit. Your photos look a bit thicker than what I like. Thanks for the recipe!

  12. In Canada we have Caesars. Theyre like Bloody Marys only a million times better. We make it with clamato juice instead of tomato. yes, clamato is clam juice mixed with tomatoe juice…

  13. The last two recipes you have posted (bloody mary and delicious combo vegan bread) are the exact recipes that I needed this past weekend. I just wanted to acknowledge the coincidence (even though they came too late for my needs!), and say that you are awesome.

  14. the husband can quote several episodes of Sex and the City. several. i’m serious.

he doesn’t even drink so, i can’t even blame it on the alcohol…

  15. Oh my!
My mother’s favorite drink is a bloody mary and I know she would go ga-ga over this one! Sounds like the perfect thing to get over a case of the Mondays.

  16. Here in Canada we have a delightful variation on the Bloody Mary called the Caesar. The difference being instead of tomato juice, you use Clamato juice which is a blend of tomato and…..you guessed it…clam juice!! Sounds horrid but sooo delicious. I’ve converted one American friend who was brave enough to try. Can you get Clamato juice in the states?

  17. Dear Joy, Are we thinking alike?! I had a huge craving for Bloody Mary’s yesterday! I blogged about my whole adventure making them too! Your recipe looks better though..I totes love the garnish! Next time I’m going in for the pickles, caper berries and olives. How about blue cheese stuffed olives? Thanks Joy! Can’t wait until Sunday comes ’round again!!

  18. My fiance secretly liked Driving Miss Daisy back in the day – it’s an awesome movie … as is Steel Magnolias although I know for him, that would be going too far ;)

Love the pics of the cocktails, so retro with the pickles and everything!

  19. Love the bloody – but I’m a dilly bean kind o’ gal. Therefore, I “put up” quite a few jars to keep me going. Too bad I’m at work right now. Perhaps a Sunday brunch is in the works . . .

  20. oh my goodness you just named my top favorite movies. Steel Magnolias is my first and I just purchased driving miss daisy! you made me smile! Except I wish i liked the taste of tomato juice so I could enjoy a bloody mary :o

  21. On our first date my (now) husband took me to see Under the Tuscan Sun…WTF? I don’t dig “chick flicks”, but didn’t want to say anything in case I was being insulting?

  22. My husband’s secret chick flick favorites are Steel Magnolias and Erin Brockovich and I know he does have a soft spot for Driving Miss Daisy.

  23. Joy have you ever tried your Bloody Mary garnished with Spicy Pickled Green Beans (OMG so addictive)? Or Spicy Pickled Okra and rimming the glass in Creole Seasoning Salt (i.e. Tony Chachere’s, which is really good on popcorn as well)? Also working on an asian Bloody Mary made with wasabi, and Sri Racha and lime instead of lemon, this drink I would garnish with fresh cucumber spears and green onions.

  24. I just recently tried Caper Berries this summer! Interesting but good! I was so excited to be able to recognized them! they are a bit odd! :)

  25. LOVE these shots! That swirly tabletop/counter? is swoon worthy! Especially love shot#3 Makes the red POP!! BUBBIES!

wish we could have a marathon sometime!

  26. I’m a gin girl. Do you like gin? If you do, you should try making a Bloody Mary with gin instead of vodka. It’s delicious.

  27. I love bloody mary’s! But we only ever have them when we’re having people over for brunch, which is silly because really they are good any day of the week.

  28. I have made my own Bloody Mary, and there is nothing better than home-made. Mine does not come anywhere near my brother’s concoction. A Bloody Mary is such a versatile drink, and sometimes I’m scared to order the drink when we eat out. Some places over power the drink with liquor. A Bloody Mary to me is more about the saltiness, spices, and consistency. The Bloody Mary soaked olives and pickles?? Yes, I save them for when the drink is gone….wink, wink

  29. Joy, im sad. I think i need a person like you to bake for me and get me drunk with bloody marys.

Not that ive ever tried one, but im in the mood to!
    xxx

    So love SATC!

  30. Looooove Driving Miss Daisy, I haven’t seen that in so long I think I need to rent it and see it again lol.

Something you might enjoy for your drinks that we did (I got it from my mom). Use frozen fruit (or veggies would work too) instead of ice cubes, they’ll keep your drink cold but don’t water it down. Then when you finish your drink you have delicious fruit that’s been soaking in your drink :D

  31. We had a bloody mary bar at the breakfast taco brunch the day after our wedding. But I wish I’d had your recipe on hand! I want one right now. With pickles mmmmmmmmm.

  32. You would think that making a Bloody Mary would be the easiest of drinks to make , unless you drink Vodka on the rocks !
But finding one that is palatable here in Buenos Aires has turned into some sort of unicorn hunt… people talk about them but you never really see (taste) one !
I love a good Bloody Mary with an extra dash of Horseradish !

  33. I love these. It’s the only way I can drink vodka. I like mine with EXTRA Worcestershire and Tobasco sauce. Love the spice! AMAZING RECIPE!

  34. Great minds – I made one of these yesterday afternoon after a busy day of running around between soccer, nutcracker practice and trying to squeeze in a little early Christmas shopping. I needed it! Yours looks so much better. I will have to try this.

  35. My husband and I love Bloody Mary’s. As for your guy- I have to disagree with Celia, been married to my best friend 43 years. We love the movie Steel Magnolias, he even took me to Natchitoches, LA on Christmas Eve where the movie was filmed. We took a carriage ride tour, they had the lighted decorations along the river. It was great!!

  36. What about the famous celery stick, but the skewer looks good too! Don’t trust any guy who will agree to watch girly flicks with you- I don’t care how much booze you give him it will never work!

  37. oh my gosh! you’ve only listed one of my favourite cocktails. i like the pickle and onion twist you’ve given it, gonna try that this weekend. here is my serving suggestion should anyone want to give it a go! rim the glass with celery salt (this stuff can change your life) and put in a decent sized cucumber spear, at least a third of a lebanese cucumber. oh stuff it, having one now!

  38. When I was younger my best friend’s dad always gave me his olive out of his Bloody Marys because he knew how much he liked the spice…Someday I’ll be able to eat his olives and drink some too…until then I’ll fantasize over the recipe.
