Burnt Banana Chocolate Malted Milkshake

I like you, and I think about you often.  Like… everyday.

I think about what kind of cookies you might like.  I think about what kind of soup you’ll want to make.  I think about vegan things for you.   I try to figure out gluten-free things… and I think about how you might like to make buttermilk pancakes for your kids this weekend.

Yesterday though… yesterday I thought only of myself.  I thought of me, and how much I could not live another second without a chocolate milkshake in my face.  I over-scooped a hearty portion of ice cream, I busted out my malt powder, and I fried up a banana with just a touch of butter.  See where I’m going with this?

Then… I counted the seconds until I could drink the milkshake.  Hurry hurry hurry.  These pictures were taken in haste.  That’s no lie.

three

two

Two seconds…

I’m so freaking impatient.

You know what a chocolate milkshake looks like, don’t you.  All of this is really just a formality.

one.

Aaaaand drink.  Watch your toes.  This cat is a monster.

What does a Burnt Banana Chocolate Malt taste like?  Um… banana, chocolate, and whoppers, and heaven, and delicious.

You can, of course, skip the malt, use vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup, use unburnt bananas, add bourbon, or use vanilla frozen yogurt instead of chocolate ice cream…. You can do anything you want.  Don’t add spinach; that would probably ruin everything.

Burnt Banana Chocolate Malted Milkshake

Makes: 2 milkshakes

Print this Recipe!

1 1/2 cups chocolate ice cream (I used 4 large scoops of ice cream)

3/4 cup milk (any fat content)

1 banana

2 tablespoons malt powder

Melt butter in a small saute pan over medium heat.  Peel banana and spice into small circles, or into two long banana halves.  Cook the bananas until browned and almost brunt, flip and cook on both sides.  Remove the bananas from the pan and let cool before blending into the milkshake.
When the bananas have cooled, place in a blender with the chocolate ice cream, milk, and malt powder.  Blend on high until smooth.  Pour into two large glasses and enjoy immediately.

  • HI. I am not sure where to find malt powder. Can I substitute it for something else or Can I leave it out completely without changing the flavor that you experieced? I want my milkshake to taste just as good as yours looks.
    Thanks!

    • it should be near the coffee in the grocery store. i think the shake would be good either way, but i’d definitely recommend malt powder!

  • Clarification: this makes one perfectly sized, scrumptious shake, not 2.

  • This looks delicious. I’d skip the malt, but if I didn’t skip it then I wouldn’t need to share with the husband creature.

Or maybe I’ll use some instant espresso powder, skip the malt and still have it all to myself!

  • Made this today. Sat in the south Florida sun. Sipped on it slowly. Life was, for the moment, so good.

Finally warm enough in STL that I made this for myself tonight…myself and nobody else. And now my life will be divided into the time before I fried a banana in butter and blended it with chocolate ice cream and after I fried a banana in butter and blended it with chocolate ice cream.

  • Fried bananas with sugar and cinnamon were often my midnight snack in college. Mmmm.

  • Oh my……I just….how had I never thought about caramelizing the bananas before putting them in to a shake before?? How marvellous! True, I really shouldn’t drink milkshakes as they always seem to make me sick….but I would surely get sick if I DIDN’T have one of these…so really…

  • This sounds delicious! But, I just about choked on the spinach smoothie I’m drinking when I read the “don’t add spinach” part. Adding spinach makes me feel so much better about my unhealthy smoothie addiction. :)
But I mean…whatever helps ya sleep at night, right?

  • OMG I just made this. I didnt have malt so instead, I put coconut. and instead of chocolate ice cream I put Pralines and cream icecream. OMG IT WAS DELICIOUS. just what I needed today.
I will definitely make this again soon, I just need to get chocolate ice cream and malt. OH man this is gonna be great with burgers and fries.

  • … malt powder made from barley is not gluten free
