I need to make some decisions. I know… welcome to everyday living.
Who do you turn to when it’s time to make big decisions?
Mama and Dad? Bestest girlfriends? Awesome boyfriends? Husband? Wifey? God? Bottle of beer? Giant stack of doughnuts?
When it comes to making decisions, I make lists… and stare at them. I take hot showers and try to figure out my life. I chip my manicure off. I stop blinking.
I ask friends for advice… and wait for them to give me the answer I want. Are you guilty of this too!? Be real. Bad habit.
I ask God… I listen and then I try to figure out how I’m going to hear his answer.
I think. I make more lists. I stare.
I’ve found that tremendous amounts of fried food also help the decision making process. Well… they help pass the time during the quiet list making/staring phase of the decision making process.
Do people actually make decisions while running around like maniacs? Is that something that works? Is there a lot of yelling involved? That sounds like chaos. I prefer the sitting, staring, fried food eat, and listening method… but really, that’s just my own personal crazybrain.
Oh wait! Are you one of those people that makes important decisions while working out?! Ugh. Why can’t I be you!?
I probably shouldn’t tell you how easy it is to make doughnuts at home.
These are cake doughnuts. They’re more dense than yeasty doughnuts. The outside has just a bit of crunch.
It all starts with just a bit of flour and sugar.
Doesn’t just about everything here start with flour and sugar and end in a ball?
Yes.
When you fry this… it definitely turns into doughnuts.
Small miracle, right?!
There are a few things that might keep you from making these doughnuts.
Do you have the fry/candy thermometer? Do you have lots of different circle biscuit cutters?
If not… you’re totally saving yourself some calories.
But if you do have these things handy in your kitchen, imagine the calories you can get yourself into!
I like the way you live.
Crisp, golden brown cake doughnuts.
Chocolate ready.
Monster dipping manhands ready.
These cake doughnuts don’t need that pesky yeast rise time. They’re crisp, but soft and dense. They’re doughnuts with chocolate glaze… so clearly they’re delicious. How much convincing do you really need?
Should I teach my kitten to speak so he can tell you how much he enjoyed stealing one off the counter and leaving half a kitten eaten doughnut on the floor for me to step in with my bare feet? Would that finally convince you that doughnuts are delicious!? Geez.
Old Fashioned Doughnuts with Chocolate Glaze
makes between 6 and 10 doughnuts (I got 8 out of this batch)
adapted slightly from Doughnuts
1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon fresh grated nutmeg
pinch of salt
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup plain yogurt or sour cream
1 large egg
1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
vegetable oil for frying
In a medium bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, nutmeg, salt, and sugar.
In a separate small bowl, whisk together yogurt (or sour cream), egg, and melted butter. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and fold together until well incorporated. The dough will take some smooshing to gather into a dish. It will be like a slightly more moist biscuit dough. Wrap bowl in plastic wrap and place in the fridge to rest for 15 minutes.
Place a candy/fry thermometer in a medium saucepan. Pour oil into the pan until it is about 2-inches deep. Heat oil over medium-low heat.
On a lightly floured work surface, roll bough to a 1/2-inch thickness. Cut doughnuts with a 2 1/2-inch round cutter, and cut a hole with a smaller circle cutter.
When oil reaches 360 degrees F, fry 2 or 3 doughnuts at a time for about 1 minute on each side. Doughnuts will be golden brown. Carefully pull out, drain, and let rest on towel paper.
Chocolate Glaze
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
3 tablespoons milk or water
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract.
In a medium bowl, whisk together powdered sugar and cocoa powder. Slowly stir in milk and vanilla extract. Whisk until silky and smooth. If you need a touch more milk to make this a dippable glaze, add a bit more.
Dip doughnuts in chocolate glaze and let rest to harden slightly.
Doughnuts are best served the day they’re made. They also freeze just fine!
Rimmy
Ok! Thank you for such a quick response. I will surely let you know how they turn out. I’ll be baking them soon!
Richard Tunner
I’m so sorry your day started off so badly, mornings like that are the worst! Yay for reatail therapy!!! These donuts look wonderful!
GARY STANFIELD
i LOVED THE CHOCOLATE CAKE DONUTS FROM THE 50’S AND EARLY 60’S I KNOW WILL THESE TASTE LIKE THEM. I CAN’T FIND ANYONE THAT MAKES THEM TODAY.
Melanie Hanni
Oh Yum, chocolate glazed doughnuts look divine
Zemil
We tried this out and it was actually really bad, we followed it exactly how it was posted and came out tasting really nasty. Sorry but I would not recommend this to anyone.
Anjali
I dont know why but your recipe is close to my heart as I make something similar and we had these as kids , I have started making the yeast ones but these ones will always remind me of my childhood. You have a nice site. I would really appreciate if you check out my space too. https://anjalisfoodkaleidoscope.blogspot.com
Carrie
The glaze is delish! I needed a vegan chocolate frosting/glaze and found this recipe via google. Glad I found it! It’s exactly what I needed for this cake. I added a touch more water to make it the right consistency… KAF cocoa powder for this was excellent. Thanks for the recipe! I just might be back to try the doughnuts… :)
Chris
Just made these and they are just ehh. Followed the directions perfectly and ended up with greasy / oily doughnuts. Try a different recipe if you want to impress your fam or friends.
joythebaker
sounds like your oil wasn’t hot enough.
Aravis
I did a passable impression of a healthy person yesterday — ate whole grains, went to yoga, cooked some farro for dinner. And all because I wanted to (*cough* pig out on this recipe *cough*) feel like a great person today.
Laurel
OHHHHH Mylanta! Made these today, for a specific someone in my family asking for a chocolate covered donut, obvioulsy did not take much convincing, seeing as how he asked last night=). I used to manage a donut shop, and these are literlly the best ones I have EVER had in my life, so THANK YOU! all I had was a heart shape with a little heart, and a pitty that one turned out looking like a blob, he had to be eaten RIGHT away=). Thanks again!
zaturazmi
My dough are at his 15 minutes rest now. I dont have any yogurt or sour cream but i change it for buttrmilk. Oh boy.. Hope its working. B-)
Kaitlyn McCoy
oh my goodness…these are so good! we made a double batch last night, one gluten free (using better batter flour) and one regular! they made such a good breakfast treat. next time we are going to try a maple glaze! thank you so much :)
Victoria
Thank you, Joy! We made some donuts this morning using one of our favorite recipes. We decided to make some kind of “frosting” this time and I knew just where to look! Turned out perfect.
dbelle
I know this was posted awhile ago but… I wanted to make these tonight and was a bit disappointed because I don’t have circle shaped cookie cutters, spontaneity light bulb went off- instead i’ll use a large glass and a shot glass! Yay! Thanks Joy!
meki
I hope you still read my read, will this work w/o the yogurt>
Gina
Hi Joy!
Logistical question here: can I make the dough, say the night before, and do the frying the next morning? My guests are the kinda people who like to get up and help and I want them to sit and eat
Teresa
Cake donuts!!!!YUM!!! My absolute FAVORITE!!
If it weren’t for the fact that I am ABSOLUTELY out of oil, I would make these
right NOW!!!(…with sprinkles, of course:)!!)
Erin
I made these today & will definitely make them again!!!! So easy & delicious!
Felicia
Thanks for sharing the recipe Joy…..I made these and they were amazing! I’m currently on a pumpkin kick and would love to make pumpkin cake doughnuts – how would you change the recipe? I want to do a cinnamon glaze, but I’m nervous about adding pumpkin puree without taking/adding other ingredients. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Sarah
Erghhh I don’t even normally like sweets, and these are making me drool.
I’m the worst with big decisions. I usually distract myself with other things (ex. cooking) and endless pros/cons lists. Eventually, I need a friend to tell me which way I’m leaning. Good luck!
Alyssa Goodnight
These doughnuts look like what every doughnut wants to be. Yum! I’ve had the doughnut bug for a while now, but I’m waiting for autumn weather. Apple Cider Doughnuts…Pumpkin Doughnuts. Mmmm…
Robbie
They look absolutely delicious!!! I’ll have to try those :) yummm
ps: I love you blog and your recipes are lovely!
Definitelly added to my faves! x
Jen
Would this recipe work if I baked them in doughnut pans (from sur la table)?
Love your site!
Grace
Joy, is there a simple way to make these donuts with a chocolate base/cake, so they are double chocolate?
Savorique
You had me at “old fashioned” :) These doughnuts are probably the best ever I’m going to be eating…
hailey
ah!! these look A-MAZING i think i need to find a way to make these pumpkin-y for october! do you think that’s possible??!
karen
man these are dangerous. i googled baker’s block [my whole fam got done eating dinner & we were all craving something quick and sweet], found your website, browsed through it and saw the doughnuts, made them and devoured them all in less than an hour. these are the types of doughnuts i love! heavy and doughy and super delish. thanks for the recipe :)
Heather
I have these whipped up & ready to put together in the am. thanks for a happy treat!
Lady Jennie
Okay. I will make these.
This chocolate glaze reminds me of my failed fondant patisserie I tried to make for my gluten free chocolate éclairs. I think I must get a candy thermometer before I attempt anything like that again. But these donuts, maybe I’ll just throw a little dough in, and if it sizzles I’ll risk it. That could work, right?
Capri Montgomery
Hmm…those look soooooooo good. About decisions, I think they’re just all around hard to make. The bigger impact it has on your life and happiness, the harder it is to figure out what to do. But at some point, you just have to make a decision and go with it. If you don’t, you’ll end up stuck in the same place five years from now while life just speeds by. Good luck with your decision making process. Lists are often helpful.
Natalie
these look so soft and delicious! I could eat 2 right about now!
laura k
I always talk to friends. One friend in particular. When I was seeing a therapist I talked about decisions that needed to be made with her. She never told me what to do, but she helped me figure things out. And yes, I do make decisions when working out. Running is great for that. But if you don’t want to get sweaty, walking works, too.
Laney
Oh Lord…I have all the ingredients to make thes now. I think their is going to be some trouble today…good trouble ;)
B
So, I have no restraint and already tried these – SO good! Thanks for sharing!
Parker
Would it be advisable to use buttermilk instead of sour cream/yogurt?
I gotta get rid of it.
Aelish
these are beautiful! and so are you. i hope you figure everything out.
Betsy
Wow, these look awesome! I haven’t had a donut since I was pregnant, which was a year ago, because I still need to lose weight. Cake donuts are my favorite though, and what’s up with Dunkin Donuts getting rid of the simple yet delicious powdered sugar and cinnamon ones? That made for some frustrating pregnant days, so I had to buy a case of all natural donuts online :) Next time I’ll make these myself! By the way, I don’t think you have manhands Joy! Also, how’s that boyfriend of yours? Is he Christian?!
Amy
Ugh, I’ve been so craving doughnuts lately – exactly these kind, with the golden brown crispy cakey-ness and the chocolate glaze on top. Yum.
muddledmom
These look sooooo good. But I am terrified to fry anything. I will fall in love with it. I know I will. These just may be worth it. Thanks for another great one.
Jamie K
I wonder if consulting donuts is anything like shaking a magic 8 ball. I’ll try it this weekend just for the sake of science. And my cat, perhaps the dog, maybe they could share one over coffee and finally resolve their issues. Okay, okay, so for the sake of science AND dog-cat world peace.
Knatie
Love your blog. I hope you can enjoy my video.
Jen
Doughnuts and I… it’s complicated.
I love them, although I know I shouldn’t. I let myself be seduced by shiny glaze and warm, pillowy softness. So after one too many sweets surrenders I decide, that’s it, walk on by, don’t give in, don’t look back. And I don’t, for a while.
We’re only human.
Beth
I make most decisions (and come up with my best ideas) in the shower. I think it’s a womb thing.
Lovely looking doughnuts! I like to make yeast doughnuts and then bake them – they come out all soft and pillowy like cinnamon rolls. Heaven. I haven’t had a good homemade cake doughnut in years, though, I may have to dust off my old recipe.
Lynnette
Why are donuts the best tasting food in the world? They are their own food group!
Salome
monster dipping manhands….HA! funny! love your blog.
Kelsey
Oh YUM. It’s never a good idea to make big decisions on an empty stomach. Good luck. xo
Alexis
lists, doughnuts, coffee…all necessary in the decision-making process. i might even add “sprinkles on doughnuts” to that list. completely necessary.
just follow your heart, you’ll make the right choice.
Faye
I want to try these! Can I use a deep fryer instead of a saucepan of oil and thermometer?
joythebaker
of course ! go for it!
Missy
Doughnuts make the world go round. ;-)
kirsten
Ugh! When I have 20 lbs to lose from having a baby 7 weeks ago, these doughnuts are NOT the answer… or are they?? Ooooh I love cake doughnuts!
Sarah R
Donuts are usually the one treat I don’t have much trouble passing up. Most of the time I feel like if I eat one, I’ll just feel gross afterwords and it’s not worth it. I saw these on your blog yesterday though and I just HAD to make them. I had my bf over for Donut Tuesday. Totally appropriate for a weeknight endeavor, why not! I did only have white wheat flour though, so they were significantly heartier, but still worked. Very filling. Also, instead of chocolate glaze, we decided we needed to make a honey bourbon glaze. Yu-um!
meg
Mmmmm…I grew up in Winston-Salem, NC, the home of cigarettes, Texas Pete hot sauce, Hanes underwear, and KRISPY KREME DOUGHNUTS. When I was little, it was a really big deal for my family to go out and get a dozen hot doughnuts. Good memories.
Lucy
Love, love chocolate glazed donuts, although I rarely allow myself to eat one. Seems totally decadent! I’ve never made donuts but may have to try this for *someone else* in my family. Thanks for sharing!
sherri lynn @ life of a wife
ahh Donuts are my weakness!! I’ve always hesitated to make homemade donuts because I know once I do there will be no turning back. Yours look SO perfect!
Frostine
I’ve never seen Facebook comments on a blog. You’ll have to let us know what you think of them. Inquiring minds want to know.
Channeling Contessa
Oh my goodness do I make lists. I have a notepad just filled and filled with lists and it feels like I keep making the same one. I made a list to rationalize buying new sheets last night, that should tell you something. And the thing is, I truly needed the sheets because it was for a new mattress, for which I didn’t own any sheets that would fit the new mattress! I could make a career out of making lists.
Angela (Oh She Glows)
Love the opening of this post. So funny and true!
I like to think I make decisions while running, but really I just tell myself that to trick myself. It usually ends up just thinking about how out of breath I am. :)
Rossella
mmmm…..I want one…or two…..well a third one wouldn’t harm right?
Jessica
I look forward to the day when technology will make pictures real (probably at a price) so I can just reach in and grab that top donut off that stack.
Chris
Madam, you are the devil! (devilsfood?) ~>:-)
Cupcake Kat
These sound so good. I am going to turn to doughnuts for advice from now on
Melissa
Ooh, you just had to didn’t you? I have been on a low sugar diet for almost two years. A lot of things I can live without, and I make do sweetening with honey and the such when I just have to have something sweet. The one thing I keep craving though is doughnuts. This is no fair, torture! These look absolutely amazing!!! You’re one talented lady, and you always know how to make a girl decide to cheat on her diet.
marcellina
Fried food helps everything!!! These look great!
Jessica W
Decisions: totally ask a friend and wait for the answer I want even if I know it’s not the right answer and make lists, workout and pray. It takes all of the above for the tough decisions! Good luck!
Never made doughnuts before, but think I’m going to give it a go!
Tort[e]s
I totally hear you on asking friends for advice and then waiting for them to give the answer you want to hear. Guilty as charged.
I’m in the midst of gathering up the courage to make one of the most painful decisions I’ve encountered so far in my life. I think a chocolate glazed doughnut just might help lift my spirits. :)
Becca
It has been too long since I’ve had a chocolate glazed doughnut (or is it donut?). I want one, like now.
Raena
I just made these and added some cocoa poweder and extra sugar to make them chocolate on chocolate and HOLY MOLY!!! I ate them all ;) Thank you for the recipe!
anna h
oh man. oh man. just started a new job like yesterday (actually, literally, yesterday) and I forsee lots of fried food decision making assistance in my future. AND my husband bought me a doughnut pan. Can I bake them? So that I can pretend they are healthy and eat more (all) of them?
I list too. But only on yellow legal pads, with my favorite Bic pens. Happy listing. And happy decision making.
Happy When Not Hungry
These doughnuts look fantastic! These babies would def help me make some tough decisions!
lesliepie
So…I am one of the exercising weirdos. BUT, usually after I exercise, I decide to make treats! Usually it is a chocolate treat! I think I am going to throw a doughnut party. I might not invite anyone else…
Lauren
Joy, I have to ask: do you ever make anything that doesn’t turn out beautiful and delicious? I mean, obviously everything you post about falls in that category, but do you every-once-in-a-while end up with a flop? Something too this or too that? Something that sticks or falls apart or burns?
I’ve had a few of those lately. I keep trying. And even giving away my attempts with a dozen warnings and qualifiers that “it’s not that great, I know. It’s just edible. I don’t want to waste it, so if you can’t bear it I won’t be offended if you compost it or return it!”
Maybe someday if you somehow end up in one of these amateur situations, you could post about it – for moral support, for followers like me.
Thanks a baker’s dozen ;)
Lauren
PS: You’re amazing. I missed you when you went four days between posts!
Katie@Cozydelicious
I love cake doughnuts! So crispy and yummy! And as for people who make decisions while exercising? Wierdos! I do my best thinking over a bowl of strawberry ice cream.
kelsey @aslolife
man those look so good!
Mae @ Passionatemae
omg looks so delicious!
Patricia Calef
Next on your list: Pumpkin Donuts please.
María
I’ve just tried this recipe and it didn’t turned out well. Which is weird because I’ve tried some of your recipes before and I’ve never experienced any difficulties. The problem was in the dough, it was too moist…I added more flour and I could eventually fry them but they definitely don’t look like yours!
Cortnie
I want to make these so very badly but I always get daunted by not knowing how to properly dispose of used frying oil…..can you help me??
xo
cortnie
Annie
I confess to being somewhat disappointed…I was hoping this was a recipe for the doughnuts that are called “old fashioned” or sometimes “buttermilk” doughnuts; you know, the ones with the two tier effect and the crusty outside? Mmmm. I’m going to have to go find a recipe now…
joythebaker
these are a version of those… just not with the tiered effect… and with yogurt instead of buttermilk.
Beth
On making decisions:
I’m a list maker too. I work out every aspect and pro/con that shit. Then I do something that relaxes me. Unfortunately it’s running. So I’ll go run a million miles until my brain stops racing. Then I go back to the pro/con list in order to make sure that they still make sense with exhausted brain. Then I call the best friend and literally read it out loud to her.
It’s a process, I know. But it worked for undergrad/grad school apps as well as turning down a marriage proposal (which was actually a great decision and one I probably wouldn’t have made without exhausting everything).
I hope your decisions work out for you. Good luck!!
lidia@ sugarslut
gosh how I want to make doughnuts but I am so scared of frying things >.<
these look so yummy.
Erica
Doughnuts are my cooking failure. I took 3 cooking classes in college specializing in baking, and still can’t make a doughnut, which is really a shame because I love them. I am going through big decisions now too, so I think I need to give doughnut making another try.
Callie Feyen
“I listen and then I try to figure out how I’m going to hear his answer.” Oh, how I love this statement….almost as much I love cake donuts. I’m pretty sure God has His hand in both the statement and the recipe.
Sonnet
Oh Joy, how do you always know exactly what I need at the moment? Well, let me clarify: you always seem to know what I WANT at the moment. I may not NEED a donut, but I sure WANT one now. :)
Tiffany
Yum! Donuts are my weakness!!! Must try.
Elizabeth @ Coppertop Kitchen
I just wanted to say… you don’t have to have lots of different biscuit cutters. You have to have a regular-sized glass and a shot glass. (Trust me to be at my most creative and resourceful when there is fried, chocolate-covered dough involved.)
Jessica W
Thank you for saving me from rummaging through my cupboard to see what I could use for the smaller sized hole (I have no biscuit cutters!). I’d already figured I could use a regular glass, but hadn’t thought about a shot glass (duh!).
The Starving Student
I don’t even like donuts and these look amazing! Imagine adding cocoa to the batter itself and making chocolate glazed CHOCOLATE donuts! YUM!!!
Janet
Great post. Good luck with decisions….I was so happy to see your tablecloth in the second photo. I have the same one on my dining room table!
Lina
Maybe I can make these…
Also, if you fry foods at a certain temperature and for a certain time, they absorb less oil while they still look, taste, and feel the same. I forgot the details but its somewhere in one of my magazines…
Gen
Yum I love donuts! And I like to think while I’m running!!!
Maggie @MaggieCooks
I want one right now!!!!! :) So pretty and looks yummy!
yoko
Great post. Chocolate glazed-donuts, yum. Now I need to make a decision as to whether I want to attempt donuts or not.
Leslie
Am wondering what decision you are making. I hope you can decide without too much more effort! I think Laffy Taffy helps with decision making.
Baking Holly
I love love love doughnuts. Nothing like them :) I don’t ever buy them though because I would feel like a little chub, but I might MAKE them at my HOUSE where I can be a chub secretly :) haha.
Thanks!
Monica
Good luck with whatever decisions you need to make Joy! I love reading your blog=)
Sally Sparrow
If you don’t have a teeny-tiny biscuit cutter, the mouth of a wine bottle is a fine substitution. Not that the husband and I used to make doughnuts practically every weekend or anything…
Lucia
I make lists too. I stare too. And I eat, of course. Making decisions needs energy and energy needs food. Fried sweet food? Even better, of course.
Jenny
Delicious! But sadly since I don’t have a candy/fry thermometer or different sized biscuit cutters this recipe is out of my reach for now.
Kasey
I ask friends for advice… and wait for them to give me the answer I want. – this is pretty much exactly how I make every decision. Before I even make it, I think I kinda already know what the answer is going to be. I just need to hear other people say it alot. :)
Caitlin @ Cake with Love
OMG these look perfect!!! I am adding them to my to do list!!
Erika
Why did I read this post when I am starving??? NOT a good idea.
Laura
Decisions are so not my thing either. Thankfully there was a fair in town the other day and I had fried cheese curds and fried brownie bites. Decisions were still not made, but my belly was full, and that’s half the battle right there.
la domestique
I like the little doughnut holes. Decisions can be tough. My husband always says to go with your gut. Sometimes it’s difficult to trust that we know the right answer. Wow, I’ve gone totally Yoda!
VA DE PAN
wow…I need one of these right now!!!!!!!I’m adding to my must try pile!!!!!!great, yummy, delicious, mmmmm!!!!!
Elizabeth
Joy! Hi! Dear Lord please make these and tell me how they are.Yeah? I think that sounds like a great idea. I have time to obsess over your podcast but not enough to make these. BOURBON FENCH TOAST. Please?
2 cups whole milk
1/3 cup Kentucky bourbon
5 whole eggs
1/2 cup sugar
2 tsp. ground cinnamon
12 slices egg bread, like brioche
Mix the milk, eggs, sugar, bourbon and cinnamon together in a bowl. Melt a pat of butter on a hot griddle. Dip the bread in the batter. Place the battered bread on the griddle and cook until the first side begins to turn golden brown. Flip the French toast and continue to cook until the other side is golden brown, too. Serve with butter, berries and syrup.
Irma
These doughnuts wouldn’t help me at all to take important decissions, they would distract me, actually I can’t think of anything else right now. I want doughnuts!
Bev Weidner
Unhinging. Jaw. This. Moment.
Alexis
I am going to do a double whammy! I am going to make these and eat them with my Maple Chocolate Porter that I am currently brewing, her name is Mocha Mama, that’s right you must name your beer! Anyway, yummy beer and doughnuts just sound good together to me!!! Oh, Joy!!!!
sweetlab
I love the composition of your photographs and I’m sure that I’ll love these old fashioned doughnuts too. I struggle with the decision making process as well and rather eat my heart out than to sweat at the gym.
Maya
Yum!!! Looks amazing. I love how you use the 2 different circle cutters. I am a huge chocoholic so I may try this with cocoa or chocolate chips added to the batter…yum.
lynsimarie
Love that your kitten stole one. I think he and I would be friends. :)
Maia
As I read through this (as usual, hilarious and well written) post, I found myself praying: “please let this recipe call for equipment I don’t have, specifically a deep fryer, so that I won’t be tempted to actually make these.” And nope! Only a saucepan is required?! Grrr! :) Old fashioned doughnuts are my favorite, and adding a chocolate glaze that is darker and less sugary than what you’d get at a strip mall joint… dangerous!
Laura A.
Those doughnut holes are so cute!!!
Cookie and Kate
Oh boy, making decisions is not my strong suit. I procrastinate and fidget and cook and sometimes clean and drink wine and talk to friends and mull it over and eventually it feels like my subconscious makes a decision and poof! That’s what I’m going to do. The end. Sometimes I wish life could be a multiple choice test (because I would be acing it), but there are so many options. That’s what makes life great, though.
P.s. Totally craving a chocolate glazed doughnut now, and I finished eating breakfast ten minutes ago.
Seanna Lea
I haven’t made doughnuts in months. I made beet doughnuts in the oven. Do you think this would work in the oven at all? I’d need to get more oil (I use rice oil for frying – nice high smoke point).
Nicole
I guess I should be thankful I don’t have a fry/candy thermometer and different circle biscuit cutters… but actually I’m not.
jolie from Joeycake
Crap. Those look incredible. And gorgeous pics! Never made doughnuts before but I think it’s a great time to start. Thanks, Joy:)
P.S. I tried the Old Bay on some kale chips last night and it was Ah. Maz. Ing.
Farrah
Oh, if you figure out the decision making process, please let me know. The bigger the decision, the more I hem and haw, letting the fear of choosing wrong keep me from choosing at all, and then that is a choice in itself. I talk to God a lot, try to be still and listen, and then when I think he’s answered, I overthink that too. That’s the big enemy for me, overthinking. I’m trying to make some decisions myself, and right now, I’m getting nowhere. Maybe doughnuts will help. Good luck with your decisions. I’ll pray for us both.
Erin @ A Nesting Experience
Delicious! Good luck in making your decision. I hope the donuts helped. I’m sure they did, they look really good, like super donuts! Hmm. I should make some of these.
Nina@Ambrosia
Oh jeez, I didn’t have time for breakfast this morning and this is the first thing I see when I check my email. Great. Now I’m stuck at work without doughnuts and a serious craving.
They look delicious though.
Ashley (Peace.Love.Pastries.)
I’m totally scared of frying things, but this recipe may just help me get over that fear. Thanks for another great recipe!
Manding
Hope all the lists have helped! I totally understand how therapeutic baking and frying can be. I also need to make lists and fry. Probably tonight. Thanks for the comforting inspiration!
Monica
OMG…… I want one right now! My mouth is watering!
Jennifer
Ok, that’s it, I’m making doughnuts. This is the third doughnut recipe I’ve seen in the last 2 weeks and it’s killing me. It’s gotten cold up here, and I had to go find a store that has wooly socks, so something yummy like doughnuts sounds really good! I didn’t pack my candy thermometer, just my meat one. Can you successfully interchange the two? If not, is there a clue that the oil is at the right temp?
megan {a dash of megnut}
let’s just say its probably a good thing i don’t have biscuit cutters and a candy thermometer…
Becca
If no one has answered this yet, I’m thinking that GOOD instant coffee (replace the cocoa powder) could be used in making a coffee glaze…or cold coffee for part of the milk…….
Kat @ The Indie Domestic
OMG Joy, I totally do that thing where you ask your mom or your friend for advice and wait for her to give you the answer you want. And sometimes I get upset when they don’t. And then I apologize. The thing is, if you’re not happy with someone’s answer that means you already know deep down what you want to do, because you were hoping they’d say something else…right?!
Urban Wife
Of course you are right…this recipe is too easy which makes it dangerous for my hips. Good thing I don’t have a candy thermometer or cookie cutters. Still, I’m sure I’ll find a way to make these. Soon.
Missy Ann Roberts
OMG just plain and simple i love your blog!!! you make me laugh and relate…
thanks for sharing your recipe too YUMMMMM.
Hope you got your decision made…this is going to help me too!!

I sure could use a doughnut. But I have been thinking of apple cider doughnuts rolled in lots and lots of cinnamon sugar. Can you help me?? And I make decisions by lots of thinking and praying, and praying and thinking.
Lynne @ 365 Days of Baking
I’d LOVE to be one of those people who make important decisions on a treadmill. First though, I need a doughnut to decide how I’m going to become that person.
Mary Beth
You had me at doughnut. No convincing necessary.
My four year old is sitting beside me as I read and said, “oooh Mama, look at those chocolate donuts! I wish I could eat one.” Who am I to say no to a cute four year old? Better make these.
annie
That would surely do it for me. :)
Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday
Could you bake these in a douhgnut pan instead ?
Julie @SavvyEats
I haven’t had a doughnut since I moved a year and a half ago. Dunkin Donuts just can’t compare to the fresh, sweet all-night doughnuts of my college town.
And you may have just provided the solution to my doughnut cravings.
Megan
Oh! These look just perfect. I’d like donuts for every meal today, ok?
Sarah-Anne
YUM. it’s been too long since i’ve had a donut.
Julie H. of Spinach and Sprinkles
Asking God is for sure the best thing to do!…. Why is it that when we are stressed that is the thing that doesn’t come as naturally as it should?
I guess that’s just me talking. But on to more sweet things. Yummmm!
Heather (Heather's Dish)
how is it that i don’t have these in front of me right now? forget the donut shop…i want these!
gayle
My nike+ tells me I’ve burned over 49,000 calories since I got it last summer. I think I could eat a donut or two……..
Erika - The Teenage Taste
Chocolate and more chocolate. That’s the way donuts should be!
Leanne @ Healthful Pursuit
Honestly, I made doughnuts in my doughnut pan…. but they just tasted like circular muffins. They were missing the fried dough-ness. These look amazing… and done right!
Katrina @ Warm Vanilla Sugar
Ahaha I ask friends for advice and wait for what I want to hear too. It’s bad, I know. These doughnuts are a brilliant creation. Yum!
Emily
Um, yes please!
I’m all about the calories. Especially when they are fried and dipped in chocolate. Which also means that I’m totally not the type of person who makes decisions while I work out. Unless by working out you mean exercising my jaw muscles while there’s all sorts of tasty in my mouth. If that’s what you mean, then yes, I am that person.
If you’re into a bit of waiting while you make decisions, perhaps you should try brioche donuts with chocolate glaze? I made them eons ago and they were the BEST. You can check them out here – https://thepetitfour.com/?p=318
It’s based off of a recipe of a really great Chicago bakery that I would visit when I lived there. Just like that Tina Turner song, it’s simply the best!
Cate
Oooo yummy will definitely be trying these out! xoxo
Lauren at Keep It Sweet
They do look delicious! I find that ice cream helps me make decisions:-)
Kasey @ Wit of the Staircase
Now that all that “healthy” food is out of the way, glad to see you getting back to your roots. Glad you’re up to your old tricks again, Joy. ;0)
I once had a district manager who said that in times of stress, we need to “go to our Dons” (whooooooa Godfather reference). Basically, go to the people whose opinions sink the deepest, are heard the loudest, and whose advice has never failed you, no matter how hard it is to facilitate. For me, it’s my mom and dad, along with my best friend Kiki. They tell it to me straight. They ask questions. They *listen*. In the end, they know it’s my call, but I think the decision making process would be a lot less… clear without them.
Good luck, Miss Joy. You’ll figure it out.
Sasha @ The Procrastobaker
oh deary me these look too darn good, and i fear that i have everything needed to make them….what a recipe and what tempting photos!
michelle schoeps
OMG I have to make those, I’m drooling….coffee icing would be insane on those! x
fitzgerald
I’m a list maker, starer, pray-er, baker and wait-for-the-right-answer person, too. It helps for me to run and forget about the problem until I stop running then sometimes the answer comes. :) good luck. I may have to make these doughnuts the next time I have a big decision to make. Thanks!
Rosetta
Decision making seems to get easier the older one gets. By now, I should be a whiz in that department. However, sometimes, as you’ve found out, eathing chocolate is far better than worrying. Keep baking, Joy. We love you the way you are.
Kathryn
I love doughnuts but have so far resisted making my own because I know it will be my downfall…
Good luck with your decision making x
Cayla
Oops, don’t mind me. That was just the sound of my drool falling on the keyboard. Yuck. and thats pretty awkward cos’ it actually happened.
Yay, Joy! You’re back! :D
Maggie @ A Bitchin' Kitchen
Hmmm…I’m a shower decision maker, but it sounds like you already tried that. Good luck deciding whatever is on your mind.
These donuts look awesome…probably a good thing that I don’t have a fry thermometer!
Michelle
Doughnuts make me weak. Especially old fashioned cakey ones.
Ani @ afotogirl | confessions of a foodie
Oh my goodness! Cake donuts are my favorite. Now I’m sitting here craving them! As for what I turn to when I’m mulling over a decision: lattes and
Cathy @ Savory Notes
There it goes. Did you see it? My diet just flew out the window. It left a note though, it says: “Thanks.” ;)
Maureen
These chocolate donuts look devine. They remind me of the wonderful ones I would get at the bakery when I was a child. They don’t make them like that anymore!
Anyway, now you have me inspired to write more lists. Lists and donuts…great therapy!
Maureen
Frances @ The Foodess Files
I find that a cappuccino almost always sorts me out. But it has to be reeeeeeeallllly good. :) Know what goes amazingly with cappuccino? Doughnuts!! THIS is going to be the recipe that motivates me to fry things in my own home. Thank You! AND: How dare you.
Any ideas for a strawberry glaze….? Just thinking out loud….
Julie
Beautiful donuts!
You’re killing me. It’s almost midnight and I’m needing a donut now.
I wonder if there are any 24-hour donut shops around here.
Kartik @ Bakeology 101
Be still my heart! My lab is going to love me forever when I make this. I wonder if I can use this recipe to woo that special someone.
Leah
this is killing me!
I can’t eat chocolate atm, and these look so good…maybe i can make vanilla ones???
Mama Maria
GOD BLESS COMFORT FOOD!!! :D
Mama Maria
Me again…
Do you happen to have a good recipe for a maple glaze?
Jihee
Oh my god, I just got home from the gym and I’m drooling over these! Must contain myself! haha they look so delicious, I can almost smell them!
Natashia@foodonpaper
Mmmmm… doughnuts. Sorry, had to. In regards to your “who do you turn to”.. me, I go into my cave. Most people figure this out then come to me. It’s a great system.
jen @ the baked life
I’m in that cave with you. Thinking it out on my own. I may confer with a cat or two, no actual humans.
Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga
There’s no way that fried dough with sugar + a chocolate glaze couldn’t help you figure out life’s big decisions. Everything will seem clearer and more in focus after one. Or a few. Of these :)
They look wonderful!
Abby
DOUGHNUTS…. *wide eyes* O.O
you’re back. *interwebz hugs* i’m so glad.
joythebaker
just for you abby! juuuust for you!
