so continues the series on Joy the Baker. I make notes to myself. How to live. How not to live… and how it’s ok if I burn the cookies.
YOU’RE ALLOWED a maximum of one freak-out per month. After said freak-out, get it together… call your mom, text your sister, walk it off, dance it out, massage it away, buy a new lipstick, fax your accountant, write your grandmother, and eat as many Tootsie Rolls as necessary.
Exceptions include: the nine months of pregnancy, tax season, and any month that contains one or more days of jury duty.
laura
Love it!
hawaii girl
I think there should be a rolling freak out, like you get one a month and there is an extra, the thirtieth than can be used at any time!
SoyB
I love this… thank you. I always feel guilty after a freak-out and I needed to read this.
saba
May or may not have just ended freak-out sesh (upcoming grad school exam!) with excessive quantities of chocolate and a visit to your site to cheer me up. :)
now to get working!
Willow
Haha – brilliant! I love those exceptions, but you should probably add any month that averages over 95 degrees F. I’m starting to freak out, and not for the first time! :P
terri
Even when you’re going to turn 60 in a couple of months (yikes!), you’re still allowed a freak-out now and then. You just have to time them so you’re not having one when one of your grown children is – especially your daughter who is thirty with four kids under seven and a beautiful wonderful mom. I think she should be entitled to at least one freak-out a week.
Dayna
p.s. this font you are using for your new web design totally makes my commenting look so super intelligent and neat! even if I write crazy wackko things that usually look ugly…. like “bulbous” or “cunningulus”…. lol both totally ug’s looking words

Hey Joy! I totally love you (long time reader, and podcast listener-to). Anyway, this post is so essential. Especially with school (I’m a student), with my living at home, and with my lack of any transportational device (even my bike is in the shop!), my freak outs have become a little more deep-felt than usual. But I must remember: I am ALLOWed to have a freak out every once in a while. They are totally healthy. But only once a month! No more than once. :)
Heather {ModernMealsforTwo}
I like this. I kind of want to print it and hang it in my cube at work.
elena @ randomly happy
I loved reading ‘you’re allowed’.
Life cane get complicated.
Life can be hard.
Life is (sadly) not always filled with sugar.
Freaking out is totally allowed.

I whole-heartedly agree with this! I am pregnant and will remind myself of this often, when things seem a little off to me and no one else. adahliavolk.com

YUP !
Shut Up & Cook
The other day my mother was giving me a hard time about only calling on my commute…saying she was a “traffic jam phone call and no more important clearly than the drycleaning or gas station.” I was thinking I was fine, but I found myself suddenly bursting into tears, and as I bobbed and weaved my way up the highway sniffling and shouting, “I am doing the best that I can!”
So I’m taking your Notes to Self, quite to heart on this one…and giving myself one ‘ol BIG PASS.
Thanks for sharing!
Amielle
This is amazing. And your exceptions are golden. I can’t wait to see more of these.
Elizabeth
Love it! It’s also possible to mani/pedi it out as well!
Jessica W
I love this new little series of yours!
Anne
Just got my first jury duty notice ever yesterday. I’m glad to know that I’m entitled to a freak out because I kinda already had one.
Chris
Well, Joy…..since you have no idea what menopause will bring you, please don’t exclude that either! One freak-out per month may just not be enough! One per week? Or…maybe you would allow one to equal three days straight? ‘Just sayin’!!! I guess I’m one of your ‘older’ readers…but still young at heart! Really love your honest assessment of life. Age is irrelevant! My advice? Do try to get it right when you’re younger because it doesn’t get any easier when you’re older! Whoever is out there saying it does is lying! Freak-outs STILL HAPPEN!!!
joythebaker
menopause…. noted!
Nicole @ the Dirty oven
Love you and your handwriting….real talk!
I would also have to add that toliet training a toddler should allow for muy freak outs.
joythebaker
excellent excellent point…
tracy shutterbean
i’m gonna buy you a case of tootsie rolls at costco.
Megan
I also think that post freak-out pizza distractions are totes necessary.
Janae @ Bring-Joy
I’d add: Insert: ice cream, after tootsie rolls.
joythebaker
word.
Ana
That’s a great reminder! I love that you included those exceptions though!
Living The Sweet Life
Sounds about right to me … the good news is, if you need anything else – we’re all here for you <3
Lexi @ You, Me, & A World to See
well said. except I might have to go for dark chocolate chips instead of tootsie rolls. because that’s how i roll :)
Julia {The Roasted Root}
If you say I’m allowed a certain number of freakouts, I’m taking advantage of each and every one of them! I think it’s important for people to blow of steam, too…and then talk themselves back down to earth and cool off from their boiling blood. I’m saving this post to show to my future husband when we start having kids; “see! Joy says it’s okay to freak out the whole time I’m pregnant!” ;)
Brita
haha I love this! One freak out is all you need – then get back to business!! I literally talk to my mom and sisters every day and they definitely take the edge off of some potential freak outs. That’s what family is for!!

I add to this list: sleep in till 10, which I did today… although i have to admit, there was no particular cause except that I wanted to. :)
heather
you’re the bomb.
Amy @Macncheesenpeas
<3 AGREED.
Caralyn @ glutenfreehappytummy
what a great post — i agree, one freak out — sometimes you just need to! haha
Holly
Good advice. I may have to make a sticky note of this for myself.
Lucia
Already had mine ;-)
joythebaker
i’m over my limit.
Becca - Cookie Jar Treats
Hmm…I don’t have too many freak-outs as it is, but I will be leaving home in August to go to college, can that count as an exception to freak-out more than once a month?
p.s. I do love those exceptions, they’re funny :)
joythebaker
total exception!
Maggie @ A Bitchin' Kitchen
Amen. One freakout a month is a good rule. No drama queens!
Kate
oh, thank you for giving pregnancy an exception to this rule!!
chefroommate
to clarify you get more than one freakout per month during taxing pregnant jury duty, yes?
Anna (sixtyfourcolorbox)
I agree to allowing one freakout a month. That’s about how many I have. I think another exception would be starting a new job. That can often be overly stressful and lead to many freakouts in a week!
Meghan @ After the Ivy League
So true. Everyone needs a good cry/freak-out now and then. It’s totally healthy!
Andra
Everyone should freak out once in a while… or we would all turn up like those people that get so frustrated they start shooting innocent people on the street or at the post office.
Meagan
Joy, I’ve been reading your blog for a while now and I think you are fabulous. You speak to my soul and make me want to live a freer life.
Julie H. of Spinach and Sprinkles
Phew- the nine months of pregnancy make the one per month pretty hard, I think I’ve still kept it under control and one/month but with less than two months less— it may increase. ;) ….And after the baby too- give me a couple months to get used to no sleep.
Sini
I love the new series <3
Caity @ Southern Life
I completely agree! After all, it’s not healthy to bottle everything up inside.
SWEET PETROLEUM
Lol haha :) Awesome //
Liz @ Tip Top Shape
Ha, amen to that! Everyone needs a good freak-out now and then :D

I love this. especially as I think I just had my June freakout. Im trying not to let it move into July. Im dealing.
:)
Amy
Freaked out over inertness in life.
Went to house of great friend.
Ate cheesy roasted pumpkin risotto.
Cried. Laughed.
Strawberry and chocolate tart.
Cried. Laughed.
Hugged goodbye.
Went home with lighter heart.
Freak out for June accomplished.
Kathryn
Yes! I find it really important to give myself time to freak out rather than try and suppress it!
Lady Jennie
You forgot the nine months after pregnancy, which is just as chaotic, neurotic and hormonal and the nine months in.
Domonique
This is perfection…ha! I agree have a freak out and move on…but you definitely sometimes need that freak out!

So true. Take time to vent but don’t wallow. And then add some form of cake. It’s healing, I swear!
Amy
AMEN. Everyone’s allowed a freak-out. Everyone is also allowed Tootsie Rolls.
Rima @ Bolu
i agree. i had that last thursday and I massaged it out and Pho’d it out :)
Julie
I don’t get faxing the tax accountant, but I agree with allowing yourself one freakout.
