[H]ello my friends!
If you follow me on Instagram you might know that I’ve been in the ocean for the past week, on a cruise ship, eating all the things and swimming in Caribbean waters. Torture, I know. If you saw a picture of me on the beach last Wednesday while you were layered in scarves and gloves please, accept my sincere apologies. Vacationing and Instagraming is just rude. Now I’ve got two feet standing firmly on the ground and I’m wearing a scarf. All’s fair.
Here’s what’s been on my mind and in the world this week. I hope you are healthy and happy, with your eye on the prize.
• Things to think about: Could the Paris terror attacks have happened at The Onion?
• Human activity has pushed Earth beyond four of nine ‘planetary boundaries’. We have a problem.
• To Fall In Love With Anyone, Do This
• Two dudes spent 19 days to climb the 3,000 of the Dawn Wall in Yosemite. Bare hands and rubber-soled shoes: The Climb.
• Sure, sure, sure…. your ex-girlfriend is an assassin.
• How occasionally skipping meals may increase your health. Does this mean we can stop obsessing over juice cleanses now? Yes.
• Inside The World’s Most Advanced Coffee Laboratory.
• Last week’s episode of This American Life is fantastic: Batman. A blind man can see. Think about it.
• NY Mag’s What It’s Like series. Wow.
I love you! Happy day to us.

We just started intermittent fasting last week. 500 calories two days a week. The first day sucked, but the second day was pretty easy.

that looks like the view from ziplining in St. Thomas! We were just there for our honeymoon!

First post I read in your blog, and loved it. Will explore more.

Au contraire, those beach photos were a wonderful pick me up during an otherwise cold and blustery week. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for sharing Joy! And since I’m a day late to reading this post, Happy Monday! I especially liked the NYT article on love xo

Listen, love you so much, but it might be time to consider retiring your favorite writing tick. I’m glad you’ve been eating “all the things,” but you have used that phrase to absolute death. Hyperbole and a Half is wonderful and all, but take a breath and try something new (her post was written almost 5 years ago). I mean…you use the phrase NINE TIMES just on the first page of your blog. NINE. “hungry for all the things,” “ALL THE CITRUS AND SOME OF THE GREENS SALAD,” “all the things all at once,” “all the pine, all the Santa hats, all the sugar spice and nice,” “eaten ALL the things in Nashville,” “all the Bikram Yoga?” Don’t give in to the trite. I never comment gripes like this and I’m not generally as much of a butthead as it might appear, but this just gets my goat.

You’re all kinds of fun.

I just saw your last newletter–where in the caribbean were you vacationing? It looks familier to one of the places we went to on a cruise. Winter no matter where you live is a good time to take a cruise to a sunny place. Hope your trip was everything you thought it would be, and better.

Actually, I’m more jealous of you being in NOLA, where you can eat all the beignet! I have to say, on the Paris attacks, I hate that those people died. But really, when you publish rude, insulting cartoons of people’s sacred prophets, you might as well send out engraved invitations to people with guns. Like my mama always said, just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should.

Seriously? You can’t mean that in any way what happened was at all justified! how about if you don’t like what a publication is publishing, you don’t support that publication? You don’t buy that paper or magazine. You don’t read their blogs or watch their television shows. You don’t buy their products. You DO NOT kill them! What happened in Paris was horrific and there is absolutely no excuse or reason for it!!!

Beautiful picture of the Caribbean; it is still cold here its nice to see you having some relaxation time. I am not skipping meals but trying desperately taking on combination eating. After protein meals you must not eat for four hours so the tummy digests it food to me that is skipping meals, talk about hard but I will try to stay on it to see if my tummy feels better and hopefully lose some weight. I would rather be with you eating my heart out on a cruise but it is what it is. Have fun enjoy your time. Paulette

I’m in LA, and it’s finally in the 70s again. Glad you went on a cruise. Play time is always wonderful after the holidays. Our family have a property up in Oakhurst , CA, about 1 hr from Yosemite. Those guys who climb that face are very brave.

I’m in LA too and I’m so glad the weather has warmed back up again. I don’t think I could survive in Maine if I ever moved back. :) On the plus side, you get to mix up your wardrobe with fun scarves and gloves!

Happy Sunday! Your trip looks amazing. I could use some vitamin d from SUNSHINE right now. And I agree that the Batman episode was the best!
Liz @ Floating Kitchen
Batman episode was incredible! I’ve been telling everyone to listen to it. So inspiring! Glad you had a bonkers awesome cruise!

Appreciate you! xo

Ah, the juice cleanse. I sincerely hope people are over it. I’m an RN who has seen too many people whose colons are nearly destroyed and begging the gastroenterologist (GI specialist, for those who don’t know) for relief from the pain. The diarrhea just isn’t worth it.

I’m not sure vacationing and instagraming is rude. I’m an armchair traveler these days so I love seeing wonderful photos of far off places!

i love the term “armchair traveler”.
