Hello friends!
It’s Saturday night and I’m already fighting the Sunday Scaries. What are your tactics for avoiding the start-of-week dread? I spent part of the day today laying on a bench staring at the sky slowly reading Geek Love, which is so odd and maybe wonderful that it makes stressing much else nearly impossible. I’ve also had ice cream, twice. Wine, once. To-do list, extensive. I’ve also put away all of my laundry and I’m ready for my Nobel Peace Prize. So… here we are.
This week I’ll be in Portland, New York, and Seattle. I’ll be seeing some of you at the last of this summer’s Bakehouse workshops and I’m so thankful!
I hope this weekend finds you happy and resting and taking time to look up at the summer sky.
This week’s collection if articles, when skimmed as a whole, tell the story of a wild world. Are we ok? I feel like the answer is, not really. Take what you need:
• Where is my resolve, were it to be tested? Where is yours? Jailed Saudi feminist refuses to deny torture to secure release. (The Guardian)
• Thursday I sat next to a man on a plane who was going to Mississippi to offer legal assistance to those whose lives had been turned upsidedown after the ICE raid. He talked to me about how this effects the entire town, not just those families displaced. There have been more stories like this that highlight the intricate relationship between immigrants and citizens in this country: “We Had A Future We Built Here.” (Slate)
• PLEASE Stop Asking If Women Are Electable (Ms Magazine)
• If you’ve heard the word ‘recession’ batted around on the news lately but have no idea what a yield curve is, here’s what’s up: The Yield Curve Is Inverted! Remind Me Why I Care! Did I have to read some of these sentences thrice? Yes. (Bloomberg)
• One of my favorite authors interviews and brings her beautiful words to the indomitable Ta-Nehisi Coates. Jesmyn Ward on The Beautiful Power of Ta-Nehisi Coates. “We should have the luxury of telling our stories, all our stories.” (Vanity Fair)
• My favorite Jesmyn Ward work. It broke my heart apart: Men We Reaped. (Idiebound)
• He went to jail as a fake doctor. Now he’s a real one: The saga of Adam Litwin, MD. The fake coat alone. My prayer is that I stay far far away from fake doctors. It seems hard enough for the real ones to figure out what’s going on with my human woman body. (Los Angeles Times)
• I laughed in horror reading this Thursday: Everything We Learned About Women’s Anatomy From Male Authors (Electric Lit)
• Speaking of laughing to ourselves in public – we should do it more. I remember I laughed until I cried reading Me Talk Pretty One Day on the bus in Seattle. (Amazon)
• The Daily episode about Russia’s Mystery Missile was… um, what!? (The New York Times)
Be well today.
My love to you!

You look strong and fabulous ready for that Nobel Peace Prize. I really like this photo of you all of it right down to composition with that look of determination. Good job.

Geek love looks great! Unrelated, where is that amazing mirror from?

my tactic will not be accessible for most, but i go into work on sunday and it’s my favorite work day. i have the office to myself, i take as long as i want to nurse a cup of coffee and read stuff on the internet, i give myself permission to aerate and water the plants instead of hurriedly splashing the most distressed ones with water. maybe i do 1-3 hours of actual work, just to get something out of the way for the week ahead. sometimes i feel like what i’m getting out of the way is my need to dawdle. so then monday is no big deal, because it’s the second day of the week. but the part of my life that’s really blessed is, i have tuesdays off. it’s taken a long time to evolve but basically i’ve kobayashi maru’d the work week

Unique way to deal with your work week.

I once translated a short story that made me laugh and roll my eyes at the same time because of how he described the female anatomy. One of the worst examples was when, after a sex encounter, he said something along these lines “her vagina was like a labyrinth, as is often the case”. WHAT?
I wanted to reach out and ask him if he was okay.

LOL honestly sirs. Honestly.

Good book choice. David Sedaris is one of my go to authors for a great laugh. I love his wit and his sister Amy’s wit. :)

Thank you for sharing all these. It feels like just a few years ago we used to remark, “What a time to be alive,” regarding neat inventions or markers of positive social progress and now we say the same thing as if to ask, “Wait, HOW are we even still alive right now?” Wild world, indeed.

When are you in Portland and Seattle? I would love to meet you. I have been following and reading your Sunday inspirational for a long time. It helps me get through the week! Thank you for doing this. It’s a public service for me and I am sure others too. Teresa

I feel like you are so smart and so well read, and that anytime I read one of your recommended stories or articles I learn something about myself. Mostly that I’m a older white lady (65) who doesn’t know much at all. I enjoy this education you are giving us and the viewpoint from your world. I just want to thank you for digging deep into places that open up our minds and touch feelings about who we are in this world. Sunday mornings wouldn’t be the same without you.

Well said and I agree completely.

I concur!
Joy and posters, I’m loving living in CA and am happy to announce my very first world problem of a heater vs eater kitchen is in the works. Having a functional kitchen is my zen-along with a garden.
What a great and thoughtful post, as always. Weatherwise and politically (for the most part) I feel like I’ve landed in the right place.
XOXO cheers to fellow readers
