<p style="text-align: left;">This is one of the most satisfying things I&#8217;ve made in a long time.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">It&#8217;s sauce.  It&#8217;s just sauce.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">I know.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">But would you look at it.  Rich, burgundy colored, speckled with coarse black pepper and onion bits!</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Shut.  It.  Up.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Where&#8217;s the chicken.  Tell me you brought the chicken.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="IMG_2115 by joy the baker, on Flickr" href="http://www.joythebaker.com/blog/2011/06/bourbon-orange-coriander-barbecue-sauce/"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6033/5889098220_d1288ff362_z.jpg" alt="IMG_2115" width="640" height="426" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">We&#8217;re making this sweet barbecue sauce in 10 easy steps.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Step 1:  saute chopped onions.  Do it.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span id="more-5440"></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="IMG_2119 by joy the baker, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/22540992@N03/5889114370/"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5320/5889114370_a0097d8604_z.jpg" alt="IMG_2119" width="640" height="426" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Step 2:  add minced garlic.  Saute that too.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="IMG_2130 by joy the baker, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/22540992@N03/5888553341/"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5070/5888553341_af310bc85b_z.jpg" alt="IMG_2130" width="640" height="426" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Step 3:  add bourbon.  Yes.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">I mean&#8230; obviously.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">If you don&#8217;t want to add bourbon.  Guess what?  You don&#8217;t have to.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="IMG_2135 by joy the baker, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/22540992@N03/5889126238/"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5074/5889126238_b0185169f7_z.jpg" alt="IMG_2135" width="640" height="426" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Step 4:  add orange juice and orange zest.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="IMG_2151 by joy the baker, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/22540992@N03/5889515111/"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5200/5889515111_5b85242c57_z.jpg" alt="IMG_2151" width="640" height="426" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Step 5:  that was cider vinegar.  Add that too.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="IMG_2161 by joy the baker, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/22540992@N03/5889521207/"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5240/5889521207_7890c88e6a_z.jpg" alt="IMG_2161" width="640" height="426" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Step 6:  molasses.  Sexy.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="IMG_2166 by joy the baker, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/22540992@N03/5890092978/"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5156/5890092978_e8e1aa69dd_z.jpg" alt="IMG_2166" width="640" height="426" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Step 7: Worcestershire sauce.  Necessary and proper.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="IMG_2170 by joy the baker, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/22540992@N03/5890099192/"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5038/5890099192_7df2cf0994_z.jpg" alt="IMG_2170" width="640" height="426" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Step 8:  brown sugar and white nail polish.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="IMG_2176 by joy the baker, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/22540992@N03/5889535639/"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5023/5889535639_6b6552f32c_z.jpg" alt="IMG_2176" width="640" height="426" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Step 9:  ketchup x 2.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="IMG_2189 by joy the baker, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/22540992@N03/5890109200/"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5239/5890109200_3f105fd2be_z.jpg" alt="IMG_2189" width="640" height="426" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Step 10:  Add salt, pepper, and coriander.  Boil and simmer and simmer and serve.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="IMG_2217 by joy the baker, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/22540992@N03/5886184221/"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5035/5886184221_5e1407b5c0_z.jpg" alt="IMG_2217" width="640" height="426" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">This barbecue sauce is sweet and deep.  It&#8217;s tinted with the flavors of bourbon and orange, spiced with coarse black pepper and coriander, and brightened by cider vinegar.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">The cooked onions and garlic remain and little minced bits  in this sauce&#8230; if that bugs the heck out of you, you could totally put this sauce in the blender to smooth out.  Be careful blending hot liquids, leave a bit of room in the lid for the mixture to breathe.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Sweet, <span>orange</span>, slightly spicy&#8230; what a beautiful barbecue glaze.  I love that we can make this happen!</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">The chicken?  I used The Pioneer Woman&#8217;s recipe for <strong><a href="http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2011/04/barbecue-chicken/">Barbecue Chicken</a></strong>.</p>

<p><strong>Bourbon Orange Coriander Barbecue Sauce</strong></p>
<p><p><a href="#" onClick="window.print(); return false;" alt="Print this Recipe!" class="dco_print_button printthis">Print this Recipe!</a></p></p>
<p>makes about 2 1/2 cups</p>
<p>3 tablespoons olive oil</p>
<p>1 medium onion, diced</p>
<p>2 cloves garlic, minced</p>
<p>1/2 cup bourbon</p>
<p>1/2 cup orange juice</p>
<p>1/2 cup cider vinegar</p>
<p>1 cup ketchup</p>
<p>1/2 cup brown sugar (1/3 cup if you&#8217;d like it less sweet)</p>
<p>1/4 cup molasses</p>
<p>2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce</p>
<p>1/2 teaspoon orange zest</p>
<p>3/4 teaspoon ground coriander</p>
<p>1 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper</p>
<p>1/2 teaspoon salt</p>
<p>Heat olive oil over medium heat in a medium saucepan.  Add onions and saute until translucent and slightly browned, 3 to 5 minutes.  Add garlic and saute for 1 minute more.  Lower heat to low and add bourbon.  Scrape the browned bits of onion and garlic from the bottom of the pan as the bourbon heats.  Add the remaining ingredients.  Bring mixture to a simmer and cook for 30 to 45 minutes, until reduced and thickened.</p>
<p>Mixture can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.</p>
<p>Serve over cooked chicken, on top of meat loaf, cheese burgers or veggie burgers.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">I&#8217;d smile at rum.  Coy&#8230; but not really coy.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">I&#8217;d say hello to vodka.  I&#8217;d wave, and smile with teeth.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">I&#8217;d totally make out with gin&#8230; tonic and lime everywhere.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">But bourbon.  I&#8217;d marry bourbon&#8230; as long as bourbon understands that I often stay up until 3 am writing silly blog posts, with a scarf on my head, a shaky leg, and post-it notes everywhere.  But I have a feeling that bourbon understands me.  I&#8217;m not too worried.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="IMG_3055 by joy the baker, on Flickr" href="http://www.joythebaker.com/blog/2011/05/sweet-tea-bourbon-cocktails/"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5147/5692296307_8bbf174283_z.jpg" alt="IMG_3055" width="640" height="427" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Little itty bitty kitchen peek.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">What is pleasantly cropped out of this picture is my cat in the kitchen sink attacking the dirty kitchen sponge.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Livin&#8217; classy.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span id="more-5112"></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="IMG_3068 by joy the baker, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/22540992@N03/5692867518/"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5146/5692867518_d0b2525d90_z.jpg" alt="IMG_3068" width="640" height="427" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">I&#8217;m fairly certain that we&#8217;re approaching the time of year when it&#8217;s reasonable to drink uncanny amounts of sweetener in cold, black tea.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="IMG_3082 by joy the baker, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/22540992@N03/5692867684/"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5266/5692867684_faefbeb0fa_z.jpg" alt="IMG_3082" width="640" height="427" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">It seems only natural to add fresh mint, muddled orange and bourbon.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">This cocktail is simple, uncomplicated, refreshing, easy to drink, and a really lovely celebration of mid-spring.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">You know it&#8217;s going to be summer soon, right?  There are short dresses and summer heels in my future. Oh man.  I need tan lotion and tea.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="IMG_3131 by joy the baker, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/22540992@N03/5692868268/"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5021/5692868268_a483fdaa34_z.jpg" alt="IMG_3131" width="427" height="640" /></a></p>

<p><strong>Sweet Tea Bourbon Cocktail with fresh mint and orange</strong></p>
<p><p><a href="#" onClick="window.print(); return false;" alt="Print this Recipe!" class="dco_print_button printthis">Print this Recipe!</a></p></p>
<p>6 cups water</p>
<p>4 or 5 black tea bags</p>
<p>1/4 cup agave syrup (honey will do too)</p>
<p>1/4 to 1/2 cup bourbon (depending on how strong you want your cocktail)</p>
<p>4  to 6 sliced orange rounds</p>
<p>6 sprigs fresh mint</p>
<p>lots of ice</p>
<p>Bring water to a boil.  Turn off water and add black tea bags.  Steep tea for 3 to 5 minutes.  Remove the tea bags, place the tea in a large pitcher and let rest in the refrigerator until cold.</p>
<p>Place agave, bourbon, orange slices and fresh mint in a medium bowl.  It the back of a spoon, begin to muddle (or press together) the ingredients.  The oranges will release come juice, the mint will become fragrant, and the bourbon will tickle your nose.  It&#8217;ll smell delicious.  Once the mixture is pressed together, and the flavors are extracted, add the mixture to the pitcher of tea.  Stir well.  ((Feel free to strain the orange wedges and the mint leaves before pouring into the pitcher of tea, if you&#8217;d like.))</p>
<p>Fill glasses with ice cubes.  Pour sweet, boozy tea over ice.  Enjoy.  Drink it up.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">Imagine how glorious your day would be if you took plain old, super soft white bread and baked it with milk and sugar, bananas and bourbon.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Seriously&#8230; what are you doing right now?  Unless you&#8217;re shoe shopping or naked with someone you like&#8230; I think you should stop what you&#8217;re doing and at least think about making some bread pudding.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="500" height="281" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=13383968&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=0&amp;show_byline=0&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=53b955&amp;fullscreen=1" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="500" height="281" src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=13383968&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=0&amp;show_byline=0&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=53b955&amp;fullscreen=1" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always"></embed></object></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Or you could watch<strong> <a href="http://vimeo.com/channels/allthingsdelicious#13383968" target="_blank">this video</a></strong>.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Bake Out with Jill and Joy.  We&#8217;re at it again.  We do a fair amount of giggling.  We eat piping hot bread pudding and try to pretend that we&#8217;re not burning our freaking faces off.  I also announce myself as the winner of the game of life&#8230; cause yea.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span id="more-3112"></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="Banana Bourbon Bread Pudding by joy the baker, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/22540992@N03/4814524118/"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4082/4814524118_e4f9e67f38.jpg" alt="Banana Bourbon Bread Pudding" width="334" height="500" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Are you one of those people who thinks that they don&#8217;t like bread pudding?  Would it make you feel any better if I called this Baked French Toast?  Would you feel even better still if I told you that you can totally get away with bourbon at breakfast?  Yea.  Sneak it in with milk, eggs and bread and no one will think you a lush&#8230;. or at least I won&#8217;t.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="Banana Bourbon Bread Pudding by joy the baker, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/22540992@N03/4814524260/"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4143/4814524260_3a15ac6eca.jpg" alt="Banana Bourbon Bread Pudding" width="500" height="334" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">This bread pudding is unique.  It&#8217;s not a completely soggy mushfest.  The bottom layer of cooked bread and custard is soft and flavorful.  The top layer of bread pudding is crispy, buttered toasted topped with a good helping of cinnamon sugar.  It&#8217;s the best of both worlds and you know it.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">Plus banana (including a dash of banana extract), plus bourbon&#8230; plus awesome.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="Banana Bourbon Bread Pudding by joy the baker, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/22540992@N03/4813903449/"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4137/4813903449_7e76e5b37c.jpg" alt="Banana Bourbon Bread Pudding" width="500" height="334" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Fresh bananas are fine indeed.  I like kicking the banana flavor up with a touch of banana extract.  If this offends you, go heavy on the banana slices and throw in some vanilla extract.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Banana Bourbon Bread Pudding</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">adapted heavily from Sweets</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">serves 8 in a 9&#215;13-inch pan</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><p><a href="#" onClick="window.print(); return false;" alt="Print this Recipe!" class="dco_print_button printthis">Print this Recipe!</a></p></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">10 slices of white bread, toasted and sliced in half diagonally</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">1/2 stick (4 Tablespoons) unsalted butter, softened</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">3 eggs</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">2 cups whole milk</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">1/2 cup granulated sugar (brown sugar would also be great)</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">generous pinch of salt</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">3 Tablespoons bourbon</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">1/2 teaspoon banana extract</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">2 bananas, sliced</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">2 Tablespoon granulated sugar, for topping</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">1 Tablespoon ground cinnamon, for topping</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.  Butter a 9&#215;13-inch pan and set aside.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Lightly toast 10 slices of white bread and butter each slice.  Cut each slice of bread in half diagonally.  Layer bread slices in pan, butter side up so that the bread tips are pointing upwards.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">In a small sauce pan, heat the milk and sugar just until the sugar is dissolved.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Whip the eggs and pour the warmed milk mixture over the eggs while whisking the eggs thoroughly.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Add bourbon and banana extract.  Pour the custard over the bread slices.  Add banana slices to the bread pudding, placing them in between the bread slices and deep into the custard.  Bake for 30-40 minutes or until the custard is set.  Remove from the oven and sprinkle generously with cinnamon sugar.  Let cool to room temperature before serving.</p>

There was bourbon and scoundrels as far as the eye could see. Before we get down and dirty with my new favorite ice cream flavor, here&#8217;s a peek at what setting up a roarin&#8217; Speakeasy looks like.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="One the Lamb Speakeasy by joy the baker, on Flickr" href="http://www.joythebaker.com/blog/2010/02/cherry-bourbon-ice-cream/"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4009/4360124358_30c5914f33.jpg" alt="One the Lamb Speakeasy" width="500" height="334" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">A Speakeasy requires a guest list, a password at the door, and a cash box for cashmoney.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">And before we got the hungry grumpies from all our prep work, Rachel made us lunch.  Bless her soul.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">The Speakeasy was a raging success.  Pictures of the evening will be up shortly.  I was running around with food and cocktails, not my camera.  Thank you to everyone who shared their evening with us.  You people made our gathering amazing!  Y&#8217;all know how to bring the fun!  Thank you for your support and your thirst and your appetites.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">Now let&#8217;s get down to business.  We have some ice cream to talk about&#8230; just about the best ice cream ever!  Bourbon soaked cherries in a gorgeous vanilla ice cream.  Take a few days to soak dried cherries in bourbon.  They&#8217;re amazing in desserts, in cocktails, in your face&#8230; you can&#8217;t go wrong.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">This ice cream base is Alton Brown&#8217;s recipe.  I love that it is devoid of eggs.  Sometimes ice cream bases with egg yolks get a little too&#8230; eggy for me.  In this recipe, the cream is heated to 170 degrees F, then cooled overnight and churned the next day.  It works out wonderfully!  The bourbon in this recipe really works to keep the ice cream pretty soft even when it&#8217;s in the freezer.  Dreamy.  Do it.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="Cherry Bourbon Ice Cream by joy the baker, on Flickr" href="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4069/4359529517_8ffddbb902.jpg"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4069/4359529517_8ffddbb902.jpg" alt="Cherry Bourbon Ice Cream" width="500" height="334" /></a></p>
<div class="printable"></p>
<p><strong>Cherry Bourbon Ice Cream</strong><br />
adapted from Alton Brown</p>
<p>makes 1 quart of ice cream</p>
<p><p><a href="#" onClick="window.print(); return false;" alt="Print this Recipe!" class="dco_print_button printthis">Print this Recipe!</a></p></p>
<p>2 cups half and half<br />
1 cup whipping cream<br />
3/4 cup granulated sugar<br />
2 Tablespoons cherry preserves (not jelly. preserves)<br />
1 vanilla bean split and scraped<br />
1/4 cup bourbon soaked cherries, roughly chopped<br />
1 to 2 cups of bourbon for soaking cherries, 2 Tablespoons bourbon for the recipe</p>
<p>Make bourbon soaked cherries by combining 1/2 cup dried cherries with 1 to 2 cups of bourbon. Let the mixture sit in a clean jar with a lid, for at least two days. Once the cherries have plumped up you can make this ice cream with the cherries and a bit of the bourbon&#8230; and you can sit around just sipping on the rest of the bourbon. Deeelicious.</p>
<p>Combine all ingredients except the chopped cherries and bourbon, in a large saucepan over medium heat. Place a candy or frying thermometer in the milk mixture. Stirring occasionally, bring the mixture to 170 degrees F. This is pretty hot for milk. If your milk breaks a bit, don&#8217;t worry too much. It&#8217;ll work out in the end.<br />
Once 170 degrees F is reached, remove the pan from the heat and allow to cool slightly. Remove the vanilla bean and add the chopped cherries and bourbon.  Stir to combine  and  place mixture in a lidded container and refrigerate overnight. This will allow the flavors to mellow and improve the texture of the milk.<br />
Freeze mixture in an ice cream maker according to the manufacturer&#8217;s instructions. The mixture will not freeze hard in the machine but will increase in volume and be the texture of soft serve ice cream. Place the mixture in a container with a lid and freeze for at lease one hour before serving.</p>

<p>These bourbon laden treats were inspired by two things:  those still spring, but almost summer days that give you a hint at just how blazing hot this summer is going to be, and&#8230; this weekend&#8217;s Kentucky Derby.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s what I know about Spring:</p>
<p>It&#8217;s green.  Once we get past the Easter Bunny stage, it&#8217;s all about blooming flowers and May showers.  Spring makes me feel like I&#8217;m in love with the world&#8230; probably because I am.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s what I know about the Kentucky Derby:</p>
<p>Horses.  Hats.  Mint Juleps.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s what I know about bourbon:</p>
<p>Dang, it&#8217;s good!</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="Mint Julep Season by joy the baker, on Flickr" href="http://www.joythebaker.com/blog/2009/04/mint-julep-two-ways/"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3375/3485677454_607435575d.jpg" alt="Mint Julep Season" width="500" height="334" /></a></p>
<p><span id="more-667"></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="Mint Julep Season by joy the baker, on Flickr" href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3334/3484862233_ba73ac8f11.jpg"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3334/3484862233_ba73ac8f11.jpg" alt="Mint Julep Season" width="500" height="334" /></a></p>
<p>Here, for your Spring and Derby pleasure, are Mint Julep two ways.</p>
<p>The first is a classic Mint Julep cocktail.  If you&#8217;re from the South and think that somehow this recipe is not a classic version, then please accept my humble apologies as a native Californian.  This is the (ooooh so delicious) way I&#8217;ve had Mint Juleps foreva-eva-eva.</p>
<p>The second version is all of the Mint Julep fix-ins on watermelon cubes.  Brilliant, right?  So refreshing, so fun, and just the perfect way to get ready for the summer sun.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="Mint Julep Season by joy the baker, on Flickr" href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3566/3485676974_f38a6e88be.jpg"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3566/3485676974_f38a6e88be.jpg" alt="Mint Julep Season" width="500" height="334" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="Mint Julep Season by joy the baker, on Flickr" href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3651/3484862713_cf466269ed.jpg"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3651/3484862713_cf466269ed.jpg" alt="Mint Julep Season" width="500" height="334" /></a></p>
<div class="printable"></p>
<p><strong>Mint Julep, the cocktail</strong></p>
<p>makes 1 drink  adapted from Chow</p>
<p><p><a href="#" onClick="window.print(); return false;" alt="Print this Recipe!" class="dco_print_button printthis">Print this Recipe!</a></p></p>
<ul>
<li>3 sprigs fresh mint</li>
<li>1 teaspoon water</li>
<li>1 teaspoon superfine sugar</li>
<li>2 ounces bourbon</li>
<li>club soda or filtered water</li>
<li>sprinkle of powdered sugar</li>
</ul>
<p>Muddle the leaves from two mint sprigs with teaspoons of water and sugar in a highball or collins glass.</p>
<p>Once the mint is bruised and the mixtures is super fragrant, fill the cup with ice cubes.  Pour in bourbon, and top with club soda or water and garnish with the remaining mint sprig and a sprinkle of powdered sugar.</p>

<div class="printable"></p>
<p><strong>Mint Julep, the watermelon</strong></p>
<p>adapted from Gourmet May 2005</p>
<ul id="ingredientsList">
<li>2 tablespoons bourbon or blended whiskey</li>
<li>1/4 cup finely chopped fresh mint plus 2 tablespoons whole small fresh mint leaves</li>
<li>1 tablespoon sugar</li>
<li>1 small, seedless watermelon (about 2 pounds of diced watermelon, I just used a small mixing bowl full of diced melon)</li>
</ul>
<p>Stir together bourbon, chopped mint, and sugar in a small bowl. Let stand 20 minutes (to allow flavors to develop).</p>
<p>Meanwhile, trim, peel, and dice a watermelon.  Place in a medium mixing bowl.  Pour bourbon mixture through a sieve onto watermelon. If you leave the chopped mint in the mixture, pour it all over the watermelon, and don&#8217;t serve it immediately, they&#8217;ll eventually turn brown and icky.  I learned the hard way.  Add whole mint leaves and gently toss to combine.  Place in the fridge to chill until serving.</p>
