Let’s play a game called What’s on Your Nightstand?. What? Too personal? Oooh come on! We’re all friends here. Let’s try to figure out what our night stands say about the state of our lives.
On my night stand is:
1 Ikea lamp.
A water color painting made by my aunt in the 80’s.
A cup of what once was hot lemon water with honey, now just a mass of lemon seeds at the bottom of a mug.
A glass bowl with a ring and a business card for a French bed and breakfast.
Two books: Unaccustomed Earth and Seize the Day.
My credit card, and a small bowl with cookie crumbs in it… Lemon Rosemary Palmier cookie crumbs.
What might my night stand contents say about me? I love a home furnishing bargain. When I run out of tea I make do with lemons. I can’t sleep in jewelry and I like to daydream about vacationing in the French countryside. I either read a book or go internet shopping before I fall asleep, and I eat cookies in bed. All things considered, it seems like a pretty cushy and self indulgent life…. plus, cookies!
I’ve taught you how to make Palmiers. Have you made them yet? It’s amazing how easy they are. The only trick is to get the right store-bought puff pastry. Make sure to buy an all butter puff pastry like Dufour. Puff pastries that aren’t made with all butter are liable to have all sorts of mystery fat in them. Ick.
These Palmiers are flavored with lemon zest and fresh rosemary. They’re delicate and sophisticated but delicious enough to munch on in bed on a Saturday night.
Lemon Rosemary Palmiers
1 package puff pastry
1 scant cup of sugar
zest of 1 large lemon or 2 small lemons
1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh rosemary
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Finely chop fresh rosemary and set aside. Measure out one cup of granulated sugar (it doesn’t have to be exact). On a clean, flat surface rub lemon zest into the sugar using a bench knife or the back of a spoon. The sugar will become fragrant as the zest is rubbed into it. Sprinkle about half of the lemon sugar onto a clean work surface. Unfold the thawed puff pastry onto the sugared surface and sprinkle the top of the pastry with the remaining lemon sugar.
The Dufour Puff Pastry unfolds out of the package just about the length and width you’re looking for. You’ll just need to roll it to thin it a bit, extending it about 1/2 to 1-inch on all sides.
What’s that? You have a little rip on the seam of your puff pastry!? Me too. Maybe just try to patch that up a bit. But really? It’s not that big a deal. Don’t sweat it!
Sprinkle the surface with fresh rosemary.
Your puff pastry should be roughly 8(to10)x12-inches in size. Now start rolling. Roll up the left vertical side towards the center seam. Roll the right vertical side towards the center too.
Gently press together. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for an hour, or until cold and firm.
Remove dough from the fridge and slice in 1/2-inch slices. Place on lined baking sheet. Bake in 400 degree F oven for 10 to 15 minutes of until golden brown. You may want to rotate the baking sheet halfway through baking. Keep a close eye on the cookies after about 11 minutes. They might burn quickly.
If using just a greased and floured baking pan instead of a parchment or silicone lined pan, remove the cookies from the pan immediately after they come out of the oven. If you’ve lined you baking sheet, you’re fine to let the cookies cool on the sheet.
Amelia
These were absolutely delicious and looked exactly like your photos. Thanks for introducing me to Palmiers!
Menthe
The last batch of palmiers is in the oven now and these are delicious! I used dried rosemary because I didn’t have any fresh in hand and it worked out well, although I’m sure fresh would’ve been even better. Now I know one way to use up the rosemary I’m going to grow in my garden next summer.
Patricia
Any idea about the shelf life????
Alexa
I discovered your website an two hours ago, ran over the road to buy pastry and instantly came back and made these and WOW…amazing. Just screwed my diet eating two straight out of the oven. THANK YOU!
Lena....
Hey Joy,
Love these little cookies, they are so delicate and good looking!
Unfortunately, i attempted to make these little wonders with dough from scratch and it was quite a disaster. Still i love visiting this page.
Love your blog!
-Lena
Sarah
I’m new to the world of baking blogs. (But not to the world of baking!) And I absoutely love yours. Reading your posts always cheer me up. Especially when I read ones like this. I was looking through your old recipes and saw that you were reading Jhumpa Lahiri and got very excited because I love Jhumpa Lahiri. A lot. I keep her collected works permanently on my bedtside table simply because I love them so much and refer to them so often that putting them back on the shelf seems unnecessary.
Anyway, I’m sorry that this is so random. But I always like it when people like the same books as me, so I thought I’d leave a comment.
Joannbm
I love these. I was amazed at how easy it is to work with puff pastery. I had never done this before. You’ve started a new tradition for me. Thank YOU!!!!
Leallyter
Hello, it really interesting, thanks
Mrs. Buck
so, so delicious. I made a double batch thinking they’d be enough for dinner with friends tonight and tomorrow – even a double batch is not enough. These are amazing, and so simple. I’m in love!
Casey
I just made these and WOW. That’s pretty much all I can say.
Lex
Joy– this is my first time commenting on one of your recipes. I made these tonight, an hour after finding this recipe, for a friend’s birthday party. She can’t stop raving about how sinfully delicious they taste! My kitchen smells like heaven, too. Thank you SOOO MUCH!
Natalie
Can’t wait to try this- possibilities seem endless.
Thea
I just made these and they were so good!
I made lemon ones, lemon rosemary ones, cinnamon ones, and chocolate ones.
Mary

Well I love my family, a lot, I always need to know what time it is, God is a part of our lives, love A bargain, and as much as I love the fact that my daughter bought me earings for mothers day….I don’t love earings that hang down past my shoulders….hahaha…besides, I’m getting more enjoyment seeing them everyday on my nightstand and thinking of that morning on my bed opening mother’s day gifts!
Kimmie

On my nightstand… 7 copies of Sainsburys food magazine, an ikea lamp, a change pot and four tangled bird necklaces.
These look fantastic! Veganism means we’re stuck to puff pastry with the all sorts of mystery fats in, sad times! But nonetheless I can’t wait to make these, currently I have a fetish for all things coconut and cardamom so might switch the lemon and rosemary for those in a second batch! Mystery fats agogo!

• 2 almost empty water glasses
Megan
These cookies are SO pretty and photogenic. I think they could be models in the cookie world.
Jenny
The palmiers look delicious! I’ve never worked with puff pastry dough before but I will be have to try that brand you recommended.
My nightstand:
earring rack
Aveeno lotion, stuffed animals
clock
magazines
Sue
These look gorgeous and sound divine!
Entirely too much stuff on my nightstand to list! :)
Marianne
Yes, I follow you on twitter – it reminds me to come and check here! Lemon Rosemary and Sugar? Well…I’ll take that leap of faith.
My nightstand:
A crocheting project that I have to frog, again.
A knitting project that will, alas, also have to be frogged.
The cat’s comb – because she had long hair and sheds
The dog’s brush – because she is jealous of the cat
Generic lamp
The nail polish I used while watching The Daily Show
Lip balm from Bath & Body Works
:)
Loulou
My mom looooovvvveeess palmiers! And rosemary. Am excited to try this.
So nightstand things:
– an issue of UK Glamour (somehow more fun than the US one and in a handy portable size!)
– a tissue box
– alarm clock
– Deep Dark Chocolate, a cute small-ish cookbook with a recipe for ice cream fudge bars I want to try, amongst other things
– a book a friend lent me (he just got married and swears I need to read it since I just got engaged), 10 Conversations to have before you get married
– citrusy hand cream
– the first season dvds of the Big Bang Theory and Pushing Daisies
Lisa
The palmiers look devine!
A lamp
candle
small painted (with Monet Lily Pond ) wood frame which contains a pic of my husband and me
a nature plate- small frosted blue glass which has things I have picked up in my travels-small pinecone, cotton boll, very small sea shells from Tonga, Samoa and Fiji and a small pebble from Ireland
four books
and a ceramic coaster with crystal water glass
Julia @ Mélanger
Joy, these look lovely. I actually just made my own puff pastry. Six hours and counting it took! I think these are just the ticket for some of the little pieces that I have left – after my Tarte Tatin and Mille Feuille! But lemon and rosemary? In a sweet? How divine!
Cookie!
This Saturday, August 22 is my Birthday!!! Yeah!! I’ll be 51!! Those palmiers look tasty! I make a nummy Lemon Rosemary Sugar Cookie that’s to die for!!
I don’t have a nightstand, as I’m sorta homeless right now, living in a friend’s basement since I was laid off from my chef/cook job. But, in leiu of that, I have my Ipod, phone & several library books sitting next to the mattress I sleep on down here!!
Don’t cry for me, Argentina!! I still have my sense of humor, if not an income!! Thank Goddess!!
Dani
These cookies are fantastic! I tried making them, only sprinkling loose-leaf chai tea instead of lemon and rosemary. It was pretty good! But I still think that the lemon-rosemary was better! Mmmm!
As for my night stand, it is a mess! It’s got a cute little round lamp, a cup of tea from last night, a contacts case, several pens, the cookbook that I am working on writing, my credit card (I shop in bed, too) and a printout of your recipe for these cookies!
Angelique from Bitchin' Lifetsyle
Not personal at all… in fact, I’m very boring – but messy as hell!
Nightstand:
– Lamp from the 1960’s (my grandma refuses to throw anything)
– My cell phone
– A book ” The Gargoyle”
– 2 day old glass of water (yummy)
– Pad and paper with scribbled notes on them (not exciting)
– Guitar picks
– My shrine to Robert Pattinson (I’m soooo kidding, instead I have the Twilight DVD my sister gave me)
– Yesterday’s newspaper
These look great btw, and this was fun!
Abby
These sound so light and yummy can’t wait to try them!
As for the nightstand …its a mess:
– a 40+ year old lamp that was left at the huose when I moved in (formely my grandparents house)
– The Reapers by John Connolly
– plastic glass 1/2 full of water
– a small bowl filled with recently worn jewlery
– tissues
– a photo of my two cousins and me from from when we were kids (also left at the house)
– alarm clock that refuses to keep the correct time, so I never really know what time i’ll wake up
– finally, some cortizone because I was attacked by bugs while mowing the lawn on Sunday
not sure what all this says about me other than i need a new alarm clock and maybe some stuff that wasn’t left at our house.
Aubrey
these look yummy! i’m not a fan of plain palmiers, so these might be good!
my nightstand has: lip balm and some l’occitane hand creme. That’s it!
Marcy G
These look delicious! Lemon and rosemary are a great combo. My nightstand has a photo of San Marco Square, a target lamp, my cell phone, Ina Garten’s book Back to Basics and Fresh’s sugar lemon body lotion.
charlotte s
hey! my nightstand has an ikea lamp (i see there’s a whole group!) 3 candles, a bottle of water, a box of tissues, a pen, my journal and whatever book i’m reading (currently it’s Betty Friedan’s “The Feminine Mystique”- amazing!)
;)
dimpy
hi…just love your site….I´m learning a lot…..
On my night stand something I always have is a cooking book…right now martha ´s steward cupcakes one and a plasticine rose that my babys (husband and daughter) made for me some time back..just love it
One way to roll the palmiers that is perfect is this one…try it out…I used to roll like you , but this way is excellent…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcFgrdLPLok
ShannonOfDoom
Love the cookies, making them tonight.
My nightstand consists of 1 very boring ikea lamp decorated with floral corsages (they just clip on) some magazines, a steven brust book, a jewlery box my late grandmother gave me for my 21st birthday, a turquoise blue hat from the 50’s & matching gloves, a notebook & pencil to write things I think of in the night & my ipod charger
GAil
Yeah! Ikea lamps are the bomb! Then, my homeopathic remedies, my lip balm, Carmac Mcarthy;s “The Road”, my glasses and alarm clock. Snooze button anyone??????
Carrie
I don’t have a nightstand (yet). We moved into our house about 2 1/2 years ago and still have yet to decorate our bedroom, and since I don’t want to buy any furniture until I know how I want the room decorated, I’m left with a bunch of crap by my bed but no nightstand! :-) I will tell you, however what’s on my carpet next to my bed and on my dresser, which I guess is the closest thing…
Several 3×5 notecards with Bible verses on them
A large framed Jack Vettriano that I have yet to hang (again, need to decorate :-)
On my dresser I have,
A lamp
A silver frame with this gorgeous b&w photo of my husband and I enjoying our first dance at our wedding… I *love* the look on his face
a small box containing a necklace and 2 pairs of earrings
the tiara I wore as a bride (6 years ago)… I didn’t know what to do with it, but it was just too pretty to not display somewhere
my alarm clock
various candles
a few guitar picks (my husband’s)
dust
Marti
On my nightstand. It isn’t a nightstand but a carved Sri Lankan three legged table (you can disassemble it), a small blue and white lamp that was a wedding present, a tiny alarm clock, my Body Shop foot roller. NO room for books; they are stacked next to the night table: Jewels by Victoria Finlayson, Animal Vegetable Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver and Round Ireland in Low Gear by Eric Newby. Must locate good Canadian puff pastry before attempting those lovely palmiers!
joythebaker
oooh you guys! i have so loved reading about your night stand contents. so awesome! i feel like such a little spy into your lives! thanks for sharing!
Carly
These are now on my to-bake list. Thanks Joy! I’ve never thought to make palmiers before, but you make it look super easy. Also fun reading about everyone’s night stands. I have a teeny (no drawers) nightstand from Ikea but I still manage to fit the following on it: adorable Target lamp; little jewelry box with two drawers filled with a lighter, matches, a notepad, & eye mask; two tubes of mostly used lotion; a flashlight; three pens; my alarm clock; yummy violet-scented candle; a votive holder filled with burnt matches; and a warming can of root beer. Cookies would be better!
Liz
dresser next to my bed doubles as a nightstand and has upon it:
mirror
jewelry box
box of tissues
2 books (My Sister’s Keeper and SCAT by Carl Hiaasen)
an empty water bottle
a stuffed cat that my dad gave me when I was 7 to remind me of the real cat I had at my mom’s house (he was allergic)
a clock in the shape of a yorkshire terrier that my mom gave me for my 26th birthday
an old lamp on some kind of crocheted doily
my phone charger
a tea cup coaster
reading glasses
and a wedding invitation
lindsay
I can’t believe I’ve never made these with puff pastry before! I always make them by hand (not super flaky, but good, more like pie crust)… the rosemary addition sounds lovely!
Deborah
How exciting, I can hardly wait to try these. I teach a highschool baking class (Canadians still teach home ec) and this is something they would love! As for my night stand…I have a 7 foot bookcase; alarm clock, tea bag from last nights tea, kokui oil, tivo remote, vitamins, a chocolate wrapper and the phone – off the charger of course.
Lauren Cooke
God that sounds delicous!
Amanda :}
the restaurant where i did my externship had mini palmiers as petit fours made with simple syrup and cardamom, soooo good and simple. because they were mini, they unfurled really unattractively so we alternated them, one right side up, one upside down, and then sandwiched them btw two sheet pans. they behaved after that.
very large and crowded nightstand:
radio/cd player
earrings
some makeup
bills (yuck)
two water glasses (i’m not alone!)
foot lotion
hand lotion
small vaseline for lips (i like soft skin)
stupid deoderant that you have to apply at night that i never remember
pens and post-its in a pen holder cuz i like to make lists and forget things alot
cell phone plugged into charger
fortune cookie fortune taped to the side of the nightstand: ” Where there is ambition, there is success”
Flapper Food
There are pretty!
On my nightstand:
-A picture of an otter in a frame
-a little dish with my ring and necklace
-My reading glasses
-Biography of the fierce flapper Louise Brooks. :)
Patricia Scarpin
There you go, boosting even more my love for citrus. :D
These are gorgeous, Joy!
CookiePie
So lovely! And I love putting rosemary in desserts — people always wonder what that flavor is :)
The Duo Dishes
You’re so lucky to have a cooking area with so much space to spread sugar and dough. Wish we had all of that roooom!
Aysegul - Nysdelight
These are delicious! Puff pastry is on the buy list amount with few other things! This looks incredible!!! Whats on my night stand? Night light – cell phone hooked to the charger and folded day cloths. Thats it nothing more! Why because I’m to much of a neat freak! LOL…great post!
Lucy
Daamn I don’t have a nightstand! I pile stuff on the floor by my bed..a book, my iPod, water bottle (which doesnt have a lid and falls over and leaks.. :D ) a cushion and bag of birthay presents! Hey, I’m sure the lack of nightstand wouldnt stop me from eating delicious cookies such as these in bed! Yummy!
Lauren
I was just wondering what to bring to a picnic. These sound perfect. My night stand has a bird-shaped lamp (I love it), a small jewellery box, my phone charger, and that’s about all that fits! I need to get a bigger night stand.
sam
ooh these look like they’d go perfectly with my nightstand ;)
on my IKEA nightstand i’ve got a lamp from Walmart, a small oak box with open top that holds a ceramic angel and a ceramic bunny, a framed photo of my boyfriend and i, my pesky alarm clock, a wooden coaster and a glass of water.
clearly my nightstand is dreaming of cookies…. and i really shouldn’t disappoint it.
caryn
oh boy!
the reader’s digest, country living, marthastewart living, a catalog for wild flowers, a clock radio, lamp, a picture of me and my daughter dancing in the kitchen(from her)—the drawer has pictures drawn by her.
Frances
I give! I must make at least one version of the palmiers, which I have been eyeing for awhile now. on my nightstand are scarily large stacks of books, a box of tissues, and an alarm clock. and a small heating pad ( the kind with lavander in it that you heat in the microwave).
Carol
On my nightstand. A bottle of white grape juice, a phone, a lamp, a framed crayon drawing(from my daughter), a picture of my daughter, my reading glasses, and two books; walking in circles before lying down and Silent Tears. That was fun. Kind of like peeking in someone’s medicine chest!
Meaghan
What fun! Palmiers look delish…
On the nightstand: alarm clock, silk scarf (as tablecloth), stack of Peter Pauper Press books from 50’s & 60’s (they are v. cute w/ woodblock illustrations, I collect them), Burt’s Bees lipbalm, assorted jewelry, incense burner, three unmatched glass candle holders w/ tealights, deer pen from Seoul, eggplant-shaped wooden box from Thailand, one button and one tacky ring I found on the sidewalk, empty water glass.
When Pigs Fly
They are beautiful. I stopped making my own puff pastry when I found Durfour. Much easier and more pleasant.
blueeley
The palmiers look delicious – I love palmiers but usually make almond or cinnamon palmiers. My nightstand – 2 netsuke, hand lotion, MP3 player & docking station, and the dehumidifier controller that monitors/shows the conditions in the laundry room!
Joanna from Colorado
Wow, we’re your readers, and we’re all nuts. :)
The cookies look great!
My nightstand is a laundry hamper with a cover because, even though we just bought the house we live in with my husband’s parents, we haven’t been able to get them to move out yet, so we’re still squished down in the basement like a bunch of teenagers. On it is the following:
A camera case with a Fuji camera in it
A makeup bag with all the makeup I own (not a ton)
And in the last pile is the following:
A stack of birthday cards that I have been given
Opened mail
2 Eat This, Not That! books
Brother Odd by Dean Koontz
A necklace in a box that my husband gave me for our 4th anniversary last year
…and my iPhone balances on THAT pile while it’s charging through the night. It’s quite acrobatic. :)
Kristilyn
These look amazing! I wish I had some puff pastry at home because I have some rosemary in the fridge that I’ll have to get rid of at some point (maybe a shopping run is in my future …).
My nightstand has a clock, a lamp, a phone, and the remote for my heated blanket (it’s cold in Canada). At night there’s always a book on it, currently City of Bones. I could keep jewelry on it, but it would only last a few hours before the cats would find it and decide to keep it as a plaything. :-)
K
My First Kitchen
The flakiness of that is sublime. And I’m glad someone else has random cups with bits of leftover something on the nightstand. It makes me feel better about being messy slash eating and drinking in bed… often.
Jen
Yum! These cookies sound wonderful, can’t wait to try them.
My nightstand is tiny, which is good, because it would otherwise be unbelievably cluttered. Now it has a lamp, a clock, a nail file, whatever earrings I took off right before bed, a small notebook and pen, and a book of devotions. The library books I’m currently reading lean up against the legs of the nightstand.
Marilyn
My Nightstand: The Sookie Stackhouse Novels, three water bottles, eyedrops, aloe/solarcaine, about 6 hairbands, birthday card.
Raff
i’ve recently become addicted to your blog (i think it was the vegan chocolate and avocado cake that did me in) can’t wait to try these!
on my nightstand…
ikea lamp
lonely planet- laos
rough guide south east asia
bill bryson – the lost continent
coloured pens
moisturiser
lucas’ pawpaw ointment
notebook
scraps of paper for writing lists

looking to adding the palmiers…
arugulove
Oh yum. I love rosemary cookies. I’ve got two recipes that I’ve made so many times over the years, that for me, the smell of rosemary evokes thoughts of desserts and not lamb or other normal rosemary companions.
Now I’ve got a third recipe! I’m so happy – these look delicious, and easy!
Susan
Yummy! I would love to try it soon!! Thanks for sharing! you are so talented and I love your site!
Lauren
My nightstand holds a lamp in the shape of the Eiffel tower (target a few years back… tres chic), a small care bear doll, a coaster, an alarm clock, a box of tissues, and my cell phone charger. Oh the mysteries.
Caro
I agree – fake butter ( pastrex…) puff pastry is grouse. Have you ever posted a recipe for the real stuff?
nightstand –
a lamb I bought in Cape Town
bottle of water
dozens of earrings
a cd player
dozens of cds
journals
70% lindt chocolate
pens stashed in a free cup I got at a live show once
picture frames, etc, etc
May
So nice nightstands! I don’t have a nightstand, a small cranny by the window and the side of my table function as my nightstand.
The cranny holds my reader digests in chronological order since January, and the little pig that wears my glasses at night. My odd collection of cute stuff also reside there, while the chunky alarm clock that I never use, and my handphone which functions as a muchmuchmuch more effective alarm clock sit on the side of my table.
That is such a nice recipe! Would definitely be making it once I get the time!
Dajda
Sorry, no nightstand. Just a little shelf with a wooden case full of earrings, a cactus that will not bloom no matter how hard I try to coax it, and a toy rabbit and a toy hen and other random stuff. I’ve been planning to make palmiers in the autumn so thanks a lot for the recipe!
Jacqueline
Ahem…that would be pix.
Jacqueline
I am so making these manana…My nightstand has my new lamp with a tasseled lampshade, small silver tray with a pxi of me and my mum along with hand cream and chapstick. Sookie books, tissue box and sex toy box.
Carrie
I also love Jhumpa Lahiri! But as of right now all her books are in my living room bookcase and my nightstand is home to Swann’s Way. There’s also an Ikea lamp(love the woven paper!) that is adjustable which makes it a convenient holder for my necklaces lol. There’s also a little porcelain abalone shell by roost that I picked up on a trip that holds my various bracelets and rings. Then just an oil diffuser, my asthma meds, and a reusable bottle full of water! Usually there’s a dessert dish but not tonight. Now I have an idea what to make for it this week! (though it might be those choco espresso sandwich cookies you shared…)
p.s. can I just say god bless Ikea?
Ruth
Saw this recipe on the way home from church and made them for bible study with some puff pastry that had been sitting in the freezer for way too long. They were a huge hit, despite my husband’s insistence that the rosemary wasn’t a good idea. He admits he was wrong because he’s an amazing guy – and these were amazing little pastries!
Alarm clock, water, tissues, copy of “The Shack” and Island Magazine. I dream of travel, too.
Jillian
Wow, I think everyone’s nightstands must be way bigger than mine — no way a cat would sleep on it! It’s tiny and from when my dad was a kid. It’s also very crowded! Right now it’s holding a glass ball lamp from Target; my CD/clock/radio; a photo of me, my brother, and grandparents, in a green frame; my journal; a book of sudokus; Hardcore Zen by Brad Warner; and Flatterland by Ian Stewart. Soon it will also hold my glasses and cell phone.
Joy, have you ever used Trader Joe’s puff pastry? I just picked some up and haven’t used it yet, and was curious about your opinion of it.
Michelle
Mmmm…I just love Palmiers. I love butter, so it’s a natural union, but adding the lemon zest and rosemary is just plain genius!
Nightstand contents:
-crocheted thingy
-small silver vase with fake roses I got from the Goodwill
-Broken alarm clock (very telling)
-various earrings
-book on organization ::snort::
-Martha Stewart’s book titled Cookies
-various devotionals
-various hair accessories
-2 cups of water because obviously I’m too lazy to dump one before I bring another one in there!
::sigh:: If this sounds like I’m unorganized and hairbrained then this is pretty accurate test. Who knew?…
Julia
these look so good!
let’s see…. A lamp, of course, my old credit card that I can’t throw away because THAT’S how sentimental I am, a scarf my sister brought me from Nepal, the biography of Harvey Milk, a Redwall book, assorted seaglass and a single nail. (as in hammer, not finger).
Jessica
So simple! My friends and I loved getting Palmiers in Madrid when we studied abroad there.
Btw, Unaccustomed Earth is a GREAT book!
Liz
I have been reading your site for a while and really love it! Everything I try turns out great. Fun to read everyone’s nightstand list so here is mine:
War and Peace
Wurthering Heights
Burts Bee’s chap stick and hand cream
tissues
framed picture of me and my 4 best friends from that one fabulous beach trip
my grandmother’s rosary
and a giant glass lamp I inherited ages ago
The Blushing Hostess
These look amazing. I can almost taste them. Jeeves! Where is my wine?!
Casey
I love reading these nightstand entries! On mine:
River of Doubt by Candice Millard (hubby’s current read)
Notes From a Small Island by Bill Bryson (my current read)
An old lamp
Alarm clock
Cell phone chargers
Ear plugs (hubby’s)

Gidget – our cat. She sleeps there. Right next to my head.

First, I just made the nectarine cobblers (with peaches from the farmer’s market). My boyfriend and I polished off half of the pan for dessert!
As for the night stand…
-glass of water and an empty diet dr. pepper can
-a thank you note from my best friend for her wedding gift
-a mostly empty box of milk duds left over from seeing the time traveller’s wife last night
-a camera
-a framed picture of me and the president (my most prized possession)
-some pictures my aunt and uncle took during their recent visit to see me
-two pairs of eye glasses

Interesting, I’ve never thought of my nightstand as a reflection of my life— let’s see here….
~an owl lamp that I’ve had out for almost three years and only put a shade on it 2 months ago…
~an alarm clock (boooo)
~2 glasses of water (I don’t know why 2…)
~a framed card I got from a friend with 2 cupcakes on it that says: Take two and call me in the morning :)
~a goldish vase with fancy swirly sticks in it
~AND my mini bible and handout from church this A.M.

Am I the only one without a Nightstand? I feel so excluded… I do, however, have the edge of a bookshelf that functions like a nightstand might. It has 3 almost-full water bottles (what can I say, I’d rather refill once a week than every night), a bottle of vitamins, deodorant and my glasses which, in turn, have a goldfish sticker on the top of the right lends (I do enjoy goldfish).
Now if only I can get some cookie crumbs on there…

Lamp (wedding present)

Tea cup (full of tea)
Hair ties & bobby pins
Pens. Lots of pens
Earrings
Glasses
Coins of small value

my night stand has cookbooks and design books and always has my computer which is with me when i go to bed and when i wake up, not enough hours in the day to blog, work on website, marketing for business, facebook group, twitter account, upload flickr photo–ugh, i think i will stick with some of those delish looking cookies you made. thanks for another great recipe.
Lianne
those looks super yummy! (: Would sure like to sink my teeth into one of those! Thanks for posting the recipe!

Ah the night stand.
Mine is the spare cane back chair that goes with our dining room table & when we need it for company the contents get dumped onto the bed rather unceremoniously. On it is: a letter from my mother, an empty water glass, a beautiful green glass lamp with leaves on the shade from Target, Circus of the Damned by Laurell K Hamilton (reading it to hubby), 1000 Years Over a Hot Stove by Laura Schenone, Buddhism for Mothers by Sarah Napthali, a pile of various PlayMobil warriors & their accompanying parts (left there by my son), my reading glasses and my cell phone which doubles as an alarm clock.
Seems like it is definitely missing some cookies!

oopsI meant bottle…I dont know waht a biottle is!

Unacustomed Earth is such a good book – I love it! My nightstand = Sweet,Sour,Salt, bitter by AA Gill. A glass of water. A carved bone necklace, rings/earrings, a Laura Ashley lamp, Hello Kitty candy (a gift)…hair clips and hair bands…A small blue and gold elephant. Photo of my family in a pretty frame. A biottle of Tropical Island nailpolish…
Sarah
Mmm, I may have to make those later, they look wonderful. Oh dear, well ok, my nightstand has:
a glass no longer full of coolaid,
a tuperware container with some candy in it,
a dull folding knife,
a dead cell phone functioning as an alarm clock,
a stack of burned tech cd’s,
a large coil of rope,
“The nothing that is: a natural history of zero” by Robert Kaplan,
and a black and brown teddy bear my boyfriend gave me for out anniversary.
Meghan
these look very good! On my nightstand I have a lamp I got for my 10th birthday, a picture frame with my couisns, sister and friends from HS, a blue clock, a mug with pens and pony tail holders and barrettes, and a jewlery box that plays the theme from Romeo and Juliet (the Oliva whatshername version). No books..they are in a pile on the floor :)

Oh, I never thought of adding rosemary and lemon zest to palmiers (which I make pretty often). I usually put some brown sugar, or add slivered almonds and raisins. Next time I’ll try your variation, it sounds delicious!
I’ll probably keep it on my table though, because my nightstand says I’m a little maniacal : no food in bed… Just a glass lamp, a mini Paddington bear, a plastic firefly my mother gave me when I was 6, and Heat by Bill Buford. Oh, and hand cream and a chapstick (it’s the maniacal part again, I put hand cream before going to sleep to be sure not to put any on everything I touch!)
Jenny
These look yummy! Palmiers are on my list of cookies I need to make.
On my nightstand – Ikea lamp, an old mobile phone I use as an alarm clock, Taste by Kate Colquhoun, a watch that needs a new battery and my glasses.
Inside my nightstand is chaos.
I need to tidy up more.
Kyla
These look lovely! My night stand: old Ikea lamp, water class, watch (I hate wearing my watch to bed – hate!), somewhat folded sweater for the morning, and Jospeh Boyden’s Through Black Spruce (https://www.amazon.ca/Through-Black-Spruce-Joseph-Boyden/dp/0670063630).

This recipe looks great; I’ll try it soonish.
Nightstand: Rwandan nesting peace baskets; small bowl of moss & pine cones from Cloudcroft; Rwandan milk container; bracelets, necklaces, and earrings from China and Rwanda; photos of my kids, nieces, and grandniece awaiting frames; small silver vase (empty, sadly); beeswax candle.
For a person who doesn’t like kitsch, I apparently have too much of it. Ehh; I’ll go buy puff pastry instead.

I love this, and your site is beautiful!

Well, I guess I know what I’m doing with the fresh rosemary growing on my deck!! I Love palmiers, but haven’t heard of the pastry dough you mention. I’m going to have to hunt it down!

Ooh cookies! My corner nightstand has my journal, a seashell lamp, a box of tissues, Jane Austen’s Persuasion, and LA Magazine’s Cheap Eats issue. Also, a little more dust than I care to recognize…
Maureen
An IKEA lamp, L.L. Bean tick tock clock, phone, lilac smelling candle, novel (right now it’s The Center of Everything) & a glass of water on a ceramic coaster.
Pretty boring stuff now that I look at it! Yikes!
Sandy
My target nightstand holds a box of tissues, a lamp (though I don’t know why because I NEVER use) and whatever book I am currently reading (it was Julie & Julia, now it’s The Help by Kathryn Stockett). I don’t usually eat in bed, but cookies are tempting.
PS – Shauna, your night stand contents are awesome! (and only slightly scary)
Shauna
These sound amazing! My hubby is not a huge fan of rosemary, and as I have to keep him happy, I’d like to substitute it with something else. Do you think thyme would work?
As for my (Ikea) nightstand, I have a lamp of unknown origin (Target, maybe?), a glass of water, a pen and notebook (to capture all of my to-do lists and brilliant evil plans), several food magazines that I swear I’m going to read and clip recipes out of one day, and two books (“The US Intelligence Community” by Jeffrey Richelson and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”). I don’t know what that says about me other than maybe I need to straighten up a bit… ;)
Laura
Unaccustomed Earth is on my nightstand, too! I LOVE Jhumpa Lahiri!
codfish
Your nightstand sounds tastier than mine (a sunflower in a Fiestaware yellow vase, Henry James’ The Bostonians, the DVD remote, a glass of water, and my mouthguard for TMJ), even if there’s only crumbs.
snooky doodle
How nice! these look great and must be good too. On my night stand I ve got a book, a face moisturiser some perfume and jewellery and some tissues :)
Linda
on an antique night stand sits “people of the book” by geraldine brooks, small picture frame (w/no pix), “the last course” by claudia fleming, “baked” by matt & renato (the red hook boys), & tons of printouts of your recipes that are my favs- that i read & read & read….
a small art deco lamp (just love it) & inside the stand are printouts of your “how to’s”…& more of your recipes that i read & read & read…several ina garten books…& always a bottle of h2o…
