Meet Joy

February 15, 2011 by Joy the Baker 73 Comments

me n things

Have you taken a look at the Meet Joy section of the site?

You can, it’s been spiffed up… but don’t feel obligated.  It’s just more about me and why I’m so ridiculous…. and why I have such a sweet tooth… and what my favorite color is.  Just the basics.

I happen to love getting all up in peoples’ business and when a site’s about page is skimpy, my nosey brain can’t get workin.

If you’re a nosey brain like me… feel free to also stalk me on Twitter and the Facebook.  Indulge the nosey brain.  Just do it.

Reading the updated ‘Meet Joy’ section of your website has really inspired me and has caused a few questions to surface in this crazy head of mine. I’ve been visiting your sight for about a year now and love your recipes, photographs, and writing style. I can’t help thinking that I’m in a similar place to where you’ve been before and could use a spot of advice. I’m 22 years old, originally from Iowa, and graduated a year ago with a bachelor’s degree in Biology…I’m currently living in England with my English husband and taking a hiatus from my chosen career path. I’ve discovered over the past year or so that I have a natural affinity for baking and love to be in the kitchen preparing things that taste delicious and make the people around me happy. Similar to you getting a degree in English then veering in a completely different direction to become a baker, I don’t know where to go from here. I can spend hours in the kitchen and it only seems like minutes. I feel as if I want to pursue a career in baking instead of biology, but I have no idea how to go about it. I don’t really have any experience or qualifications, other than my own love of baking and self-taught/family-taught skills. How do I get employers to see my passion for baking? Should I take baking classes? I’m stuck. Any advice from a seasoned baker such as yourself would be extremely appreciated. Signed… Half-Baked in Biology.

        Hey Sarah,

It’s seems kind of bizarre but I’m a biologist who loves baking too!! I love birds and bugs and plants but I really love baking and it’s definitely my passion and something I would love to ‘work at’ some day. Thanks for the advice, Joy—I’ve often wondered about making the leap but I’m not really sure where to start either.

You are inspiring and totally awesome. Also, you look hot in that dress but not in an I’m-trying-to-be-hot kind of way. More in an “oh, this old thing? I just threw it on” kind of way. Effortless. Perfect. Can’t wait for your book!

oh, yes, anthro sales rock my world! weirdly, i find the discounts are even better in london (and i just don’t do the exchange rate calculation!), although the SF shop will always be my nostalgic fave.
