Five Good Things

July 17, 2012 by Joy the Baker 81 Comments

catman

There are awesome things going on in my kitchen.  Awesome things like… the oven is off.  Awesome things like… the dishes are clean.  Awesome things like… the cat’s new haircut means that there’s generally less cat hair everywhere.  Ps.  The cat learned this over the shoulder pose from the Olsen twins.  Demure.

Since all I’m eating is popsicles and fried rice, let’s talk about inspiration.  Have you seen the Internet?  It’s all over!

The Everygirl is a new site by two excellent Chicago-living ladies, Danielle Moss and Alaina Kaczmarski.  Everygirl is a really nice place to land.  They have career features and interviews with women trying their best to live their dreams (Check out this feature with the Blogshop ladies).  Everygirl also features fashions spots and health tips… but I super love that they have a finance section.  It’s not often enough that people tell me to chill out on my credit card and to think once or twice about a Roth IRA… right!?

I still just swoooon major for this line of jewelry from Unearthen.  Its design is exactly like its name:  you know, from the ground.  I’m not sure how much longer I can live without this watch.  In reality the answer is… probably a long time, but I love it!

beach coffee

Have you seen the 365 Days of Hand Lettering Project by Lisa Congdon?  It is inspired and inspiring.  It makes me want to pick up a pen and write kind words reminding myself to be kind to myself.  I can be such a jerk to myself sometimes.  … but maybe that’s just me.

If you’d let me snoop around your medicine cabinet… I would.  If you let me gawk at your shoe closet (or shoe pile)… I’d root through that.  If you’d let me admire your silverware drawer… I’d totally be all over that.  I’m nosey.  Closet Visit was made for me.  Closet Visit goes deep inside the closets of beautiful and talented women.  The site will make you love and hate.  Love = the beauty and talent of the women that surround us.  Hate = our own shoe closet (pile).

books and dinner

I’m deep into a big pile of cookbooks (and a small cup of chocolate covered sunflower seeds).  I’m going to make you some ice cream from the Savory Sweet Life cookbook.  I’m totally making pancakes from Clinton St. Baking Company cookbook, and oooooh the Cupcakes and Cashmere book.  Heart!  It feels like such a treat to browse through all these books.  It’s like vacation on the couch.

I love you, I do!  Enjoy this day!

xo Joy

We keep brushing our orange cat to avoid fur everywhere, but it’s not working. He needs a cut :)

I love seeing cats with that haircut. Mine has short enough fur that she won’t ever get it, but it is cute enough that I almost wish she was a long hair (while I’m at it, I’ll also wish that she was polydactyl so I could have even more cuteness).

How to give a cat a haircut? My long-haired kitty is cranky that I keep trying to brush out his kitty hair clumps :(. He would probably need sedation for a haircut though….

Love your blog, you make me smile. Also, love the podcast – listen while I am walking laps around the track; the time goes so quickly and I catch myself chuckling <3

Love the cat photo. Have also really appreciated your insight into salted and unsalted butter and the packing of brown sugar. Would LOVE your opinion on the various types of flour and how to measure/weigh and using extra large or medium eggs rather than large eggs in recipes. Your blog is fabulous and absolutely inspiring!

Closet Visit will probably make me hate everything about my wordrobe. My wordrobe is basically nonexistant. I don’t have a fashion sense what so ever.

But I do love flipping through all my cookbooks and flagging things that I love (and will probably never have time to make) Seriously, I’ve probably wasted like 3 oacks of sticky notes (all torn up so I can get the most use) to flag everything I like :)

The Best Books for Summer 2022

Summer books are meant to be defiled. Pages should be smeared with suntan lotion and potato chip grease; covers should be sun faded and waterlogged, used as coasters for your margaritas, a landing pad for unwieldy ice cream cones.
