I almost drove straight out of town, just to go-on and get-gone. Unfortunately, it’s hard to go-on and get-gone without looking dramatic and explaining at least a portion of your crazy brain. Sometimes the long-shower-learn-to-deal is easier to explain than the go-on and get-gone.
I almost drove straight out of town, but instead I took a shower.
I almost drove straight out of town. Just to go-on and get-gone. Instead I drove to Clemence’s house for chocolate croissants, doughnuts, and fig picking with Malcolm, Olivia, baby Xavy in his rocking chair… and a chicken.
Sometimes the get-gone is closer to home than you think. Sometimes you just need a wooden ladder, a fruiting tree, a lovely family, and a chicken in the street.
And oatmeal.
Let’s talk about oatmeal. Things are most lovely without the fuss.
Ripe figs are my dream.
Topping them with a drizzle of olive oil and brown sugar is just beyond.
They’re roasted in a hot oven while oatmeal is simmered on the stovetop.
Warm oatmeal. Extra almond milk. Extra extra brown sugar. Soft roasted figs. Mix and swoon.
We’re really just talking about the simplest of indulgences. Sweet, warm fruit over hearty , creamy granola. Use this as inspiration. You can really use any in season fruit that suits your fancy. Not long ago I made Roasted Strawberry Rice Pudding that nearly sent me over the edge.
Sometimes it’s just a humble dish that provides just the comfort and momentary escape you need. By ‘you’, I really mean ‘me’… I’m just talking about myself. You’re probably fine and just need oatmeal for oatmeal’s sake.
Brown Sugar Roasted Fig Oatmeal
serves 2
8 ripe figs, sliced in half
drizzle olive oil
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 1/3 cup old-fashioned oatmeal
1 1/2 cup water
pinch of salt
pinch of fresh grated nutmeg
1/2 cup almond milk (or cow’s milk or soy milk), plus more for topping
3 tablespoons brown sugar (for topping the granola)
Place a rack in the upper third of the oven and preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Place halved figs on baking sheet, drizzle lightly with olive oil and sprinkle with 3 tablespoons brown sugar. Place in the oven and allow to roast until soft and bubbling, about 8 to 10 minutes. While the figs roast, make the oatmeal.
In medium saucepan, bring water to a simmer. Add oats and salt and stir. As oats begin to absorb water, add the almond milk. Cook and stir for about 5 minutes, until oats are cooked thought. Remove from heat. Remove figs from the oven.
To serve, place oatmeal in two bowls. Top with more milk, roasted figs, and brown sugar. Serve immediately.

Is there any reason not to make this with all milk and no water? I find oatmeal made with water is just…not good.

Milk! Go for it!

What a great looking recipe! I cannot wait to try this (just have to find some fresh figs in NJ…). I hope you are feeling better… Sounds like you had a nice day. I’m a new reader here and I just wanted to say that I completely agree that sometimes a nice shower is in order and something to clear your head.
On a side note… Not sure if you have heard of the comedian Gary Gulman but he has this hilarious skit about figs and how he only knows them from fig newtons (“I wouldn’t know a fig if it walked through the door. I’d say sorry fig I didn’t recognize you without your cookie covering.”) hahah. You should YouTube that for a laugh.
Heidi - Apples Under My Bed
Beautiful, just beautiful. I so so so wish it was still fig season here in Aus.

I´m so happy it´s oatmeal season again! I guess oatmeal isn´t really a seasonal product, but for me oatmeal means embracing autumn and colder mornings that need a warm and hearty breakfast! This seems like the perfect sunday-comfort-food :) Simple, yet fancy and comforting!

Wow this recipe sounds incredible!

this looks like heaven. and now I’m drooling. I want some of this fig oatmeal right now. do you deliver?
Jess.
I was really resistant to fig eating for a long time…. and i have no idea why. they are so delicious!!! Can’t wait to try this.
Marissa
I would probably have to change the ingredients to say 12 figs. ‘Cause guarenteed at least 4 wouldn’t last long enough to make it into the oatmeal…
Natay
Oh Joy…I just had to pull one of those long-shower-learn-to-deal moments the other day. I love how you have such a gift of describing your feelings in a way that I can totally relate to. Makes me feel like I’m not alone when struggling with my own crazy brain moments.
joythebaker
you and your crazy brain are totally not alone!!
Christina
Dear Joy,
I want you to know the IMMENSE joy your blog gives to me. To read about a warm bowl of oatmeal with figs, or some brownies made with love just makes me smile. You touch the lives of our readers! Thank you thank you, you sweet lady!
Suzanne | Salty Fig
I’ve been eating myself silly with figs, they are lovely in your oatmeal!
Lauren (PB&G)
I’m drooling over here. I wish I could get fresh figs by me (without paying a fortune for them), but dried figs will have to do! YUM!
Garden Correspondent
Everything about this post is so beautiful, not least the idea of figs and oatmeal. It makes me want to bury myself in a bowl of it. Our tree is done fruiting, but I might even venture to the market and buy some figs so I can fill my mouth with these lovely flavors.
Mandy
Yum! I love oatmeal and I love figs but this pairing hadn’t occurred to me until now.

Yes. Oh my gosh yes. I am always looking for ways to fancy up my oatmeal. Can’t wait to try this!

Absolutely delicious sounding recipe. I want it now for breakfast!
Also, I love your writing style, it’s so dreamy.

Figs, figs and more figs. I’m Italian and yes we love what you can do with figs. Now I know what I will have for breakfast. Thanks Paulette

I love experimenting with oatmeal! Most people think oatmeal is so plain and boring but it doesn’t have to be. It can be a blank canvas..adding whatever flavors you love to create a warm comforting bowl of awesomeness!
Martine
I often just add chopped ripe figs to my oatmeal while it’s cooking…. yes the figs break down to be almost indistinguishable from the oatmeal, but the entire bowl is full of warm, rich gooey flavor from the figs. Just sayin’, in case you’re ever lazy and don’t want to roast the figs separately…
Charul @ Tadka Masala
I love roasted figs they look so cute and obviously the taste delicious.
PS: I am still not over those roasted jalapenos and cheese sandwich from the last post. YUMMM!

Fresh figs (when they aren’t the sad ones available at some places in Boston) are possibly my favorite fruit. I’ll have to pick some figs up when I get home and can shop at my favorite fruit store!

there are few things in life as delicious as a fresh picked, tree ripened fig

I read “fig picking” as something completely inappropriate. Sorry Joy.
Nicole @ Lapetitebaker
I hate oatmeal but tossing in a few brown sugar roasted figs might change my mind.

Thank you Joy for this recipe for another wonderful way to enjoy fresh figs! I am preparing this oatmeal for tomorrow’s breakfast and posting it afterwards. I hope that you can stop by my blog where I’m giving you full credit for the recipe. Please let me know what you think!

This looks delicious! I love figs! And a good porridge on a winters day is just perfect!

it’s not just you. it’s everything and it’s just a good thing that oatmeal exists. bourbon’s that way too.

I love this kind of combination: so comforting, and unlike many comfort foods, actually quite healthy! I’m glad you managed to escape to somewhere lovely, and I hope you have a good week.

Taking a break from life by driving away from it can be necessary… therapeutic and revitalizing. And spending time with great people doing great things eating great food is just as good. Your oatmeal looks wonderful with those ripe plump roasted figs. I bet this oatmeal helped…there’s no way it didn’t. :)

I adore figs. It’s so hard to find ones at my grocery store that aren’t smushed and rotting unfortunately. Lucky you being able to pick them yourself! This oatmeal looks awesome.

Yum. I’m not the biggest fan of oatmeal, but I think this might dress it up enough. Maybe I’ll just sub out some cream of wheat.

Love the rustic fall oatmeal :)
Katie @ Blonde Ambition
I love this fun spin on what *can* be a really boring breakfast. i’ve been eating oatmeal with almond milk for breakfast lately because i was diagnosed with low bone density (almonds = high in calcium!), but i’m always looking for ways to jazz it up!
Ashley
This is beauty!

We all need oatmeal, and figs. And hugs, too, but this is another story ;-)
madeline
oh man, these look like the perfect chilly morning treat. if only it was the weekend again.
kari
this sounds so good. since my figs are pretty much dripping their own brown sugar right now, do i need to add more sugar to them or would roasting them with a little olive oil work just fine? of course I will still be topping the oatmeal with a little brown sugar and maybe some salted butter :)
joythebaker
of course… that would be fine!

I made french crêpes this morning, can we make a deal? Otmeal for crêpes? :)

One of the cruelest things about living in the Midwest is that it is fairly difficult and quite costly to get my hands on fresh figs.
Amanda @ Once Upon a Recipe
oh, if only going-on and getting gone was an option. this delicious oatmeal sounds like a pretty lovely alternative. i might just need a really big pot of it. like, gargantuan.

You cheer me up! That’s what I come here for. That and the awesome recipes. I’ve never eaten a fig before but have always wanted to give them a try. No time like the present. Off to make museli with almond milk, my morning comfort, sans the fig until I can find some. Thanks Joy!
Diana
The humblest dishes are the most comforting, especially when you put your heart into picking the perfect fig which I’ll be doing tomorrow morning to make me some of this warm and delicious oatmeal. Just perfect for these brisk European mornings.
Kirstin
Confession? I’ve never eaten a fresh fig before. I should probably fix that.

I love this post and often get that feeling… the only thing that keeps me sane in my crazy life is my morning oatmeal and caramelized apples

Figs are so delicious. Figs and dates are two of my favorite wrinkly fruits :) Love that you put them in oatmeal and with plenty of brown sugar!
Laura (Tutti Dolci)
those roasted figs look to die for! a perfect oatmeal topper!
Mel@TheDizzyMom
Figs scare me. Like teeth chattering scared. Not the taste, but the preparation. I’m going to hold my breath and give this a shot. I wonder….can you roast a banana? I’ll have to try that, too. Zippidy doo dah!
emmycooks
Swoon is right! I eat oatmeal half the year but suddenly it seems like I’ve been missing out: how could I have eaten a thousand bowls of oatmeal in my lifetime without brown sugar roasted figs? What an improvement. And I’m glad you found a chicken to cheer you up–mine always entertain me well when I need it.
Archer
Do you try to cut back on cow milk or do you just like the taste of almond milk in your oatmeal? Just curious.

I totally understand the feeling…although you’re lucky to have a chicken to turn to. I usually end up marathon watching dateline and snapped…(uh, I sound disturbing). Anywho, I’m a total fig-head and dig this dish :)
