Into the Fall

September 16, 2012 by Joy the Baker 70 Comments

getting ready for fall

I feel like I need to see where I’ve been in order to figure out where I’m going.  I mean that in the most food sense of the phrase.

I need to start thinking about apples instead of peaches, and caramelized onions instead of avocados.  I can get there… I can totally get there with time.

Right now, I just want to hold onto these Indian Summer afternoons and gloriously late sunsets.

Caramelized Mushrooms and Dumplings.  It’s like Chicken Pot Pie without the chicken and with extra mushrooms and biscuits.  It’s savory greatness.

Book Tour Note:  I have a feeling that VERMONT will get me into the mood for the Fall holidays.  I’ll be in Vermont celebrating the King Arthur Grand Opening weekend this coming Saturday, September 22!  I would LOVE to see you!

Ps.  I hope to be signing books in Boston in early December.  More details to follow!

getting ready for fall

The combination of orange and chocolate is my go-to December comfort flavor combination.  Chocolate Orange Cream Cheese Pound Cake is happy breakfasting.

getting ready for fall

Chocolate Hazelnut Pudding is reminiscent of Nutella and indulgent as all heck!

Biscuits are one of the best reasons to turn on your oven.  Mushroom and Onion Buttermilk Biscuits.  It’s time.  It’s time…

getting ready for fall

Look at all this Fall flavor madness.

Geez, I’m just trying to prepare you… because I’m barely prepared myself.

Vegan Pumpkin Walnut Bread.

Dad’s Perfect Sweet Potato Pie.

Honey Cranberry Cornmeal Quickbread

Pear Spice Cake with Walnut Praline Topping.  Maybe I just want to make the Walnut Praline Topping and serve it with a spoon.

I feel like these tacos are a bridge between Summer and Winter.  Roasted sweet potatoes are combined with quick picked cabbage, keeping the flavors grounded but bright.  Black Bean and Sweet Potato Tacos.  I can see it now… I’m about to eat these for weeks.

I hope you have the most lovely Sunday night.  I hope there’s good tv and lots of tacos.  Tomorrow:  fried guacamole.  Saturday: VERMONT!

Enjoy Vermont, Joy. You’re going to have visited two of my favourite states (and homes) in what seems like a whirlwind. I hope you end up feeling the same way about VT that you did about ME. :) :)

I have made the black bean tacos and the pear praline cake pictured above, and both are AMAZING!

While you’re here on the East Coast you should head down to Washington, DC for a book signing! You might be completely disgusted at the amount of flour, butter, and bourbon that I’ve gotten on your beautiful book, but I promise that just means that it’s loved :)

My Top 10 Peanut Butter Recipes

I haven’t felt like making meals at all this week.  I don’t even seem to have the energy to cobble together my usual lazy stand-bys: scrambled eggs and a carb, toasted.  Strangely, I’m also not allowing myself to order any expensive (and everything is expensive right now) takeout so… well, I’ll be eating bananas smeared…
