Weekend Warrior

weekend inspiration

Can we talk about our weekend inspiration?  Let’s take on the rest, the recharge, and the gathering and laughing with friends.  Can we turn the email down and the Fleetwood Mac way way up?  Can we find reason to bust out the sunscreen?  Can we order a basket of French Fries at Brunch and order another basket at 1am after a very loud night of karaoke?

Can there be cold negronis and long dog walks.  Maybe some catnip and breakfast cake?  Too much coffee and a long afternoon nap?  Oooh man… I’m just talkin’ dirty now.

My wish for you is that at least some of your weekend is a true weekend for you.  Even if there’s a clock you have to punch, or overtime in your future… I hope there is at least a moment of cake and/or sunshine and/or a snooze button and/or an extra cup of coffee.

Here’s some weekend inspiration.

I love you (seriously, I do).  Happy Friday!

weekend inspiration

I spent some weekend time with my maj Tracy from Shutterbean.  I sliced into this Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cake like it was my life’s work.  I also played Star Wars Legos with four-year-old Cooper.  Pretty much the best ever.

Sidenote:  I may have ignited a previously dormant passion for Legos.  We can talk about that later.

weekend inspiration

Making scones is part of a super relaxing weekend, right?  These lavender scones are coming atcha in a few weeks.  In the meantime, these Maple Blueberry joints are the business.

weekend inspiration

The Ivy is a Los Angeles institution.

It’s the kind of restaurant where the salads are $40, and  you’re probably enjoying your lunch next to a Kardashian or three.  Maybe you’re into that sort of thing.  The Ivy is full of roses, which got me thinking…

weekend inspiration

I should make a Rose Cake!

I’m still tweaking the recipe, but I’ll have it ready for you around Mother’s Day.

weekend inspiration

Work feels less like work when you’re doing it with friends.

Grab you camera this weekend, call a friend, go see what you can see!  It’s totally fun.  Flowers, pets, and big bushes of Bougainvillea make excellent subjects.

weekend inspiration

Just call him.

He could be wearing a party hat for no reason.  Call and ask.

weekend inspiration

Weekends can also all about meeting new friends, making them Ina Garten’s Baked Shrimp Scampi, and eating all mellow-like on the front patio.  Elsie and Emma from A Beautiful Mess are fun people to sit outside with.  They don’t look at you crazy when you go in for second and third helpings of shrimp and rice, and they bring over Whiskey Lemonades.  Kindness abound.

I hope your weekend is full of work that you want to do.  Sleep in like it’s your j.o.b… that has really comfy pillows.

xo j

I LOVE Ina Garten’s shrimp scampi!! It feels so fancy and special – like a real, true indulgence. Your “garden party” on the patio looks lovely too. . . .

That cake looks delicious! I’m like drooling, and I haven’t had breakfast yet, and all I can think about is cake now. :P Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll be having much f a weekend. Finals start on Tuesday and I need to study my butt off, especially for physics. :/

Have a great weekend and thanks for this post. Reminding me what weekends are for!

My weekend started a day early down here in New Orleans. It’s Jazz Fest time. I started the day with crawfish beignets, then duck and shrimp cajun pasta, and ended with crab and crawfish stuffed mushrooms and a couple of margaritas. I know you’ve been to New Orleans a few times and you love it here. But next year, come for Jazz Fest. You’ll love it, I promise.

Oh man. My brothers and I bust out our old Lego sets every year around Christmas. Drinking plus lego-building is a recipe for an awesome night at any age. Give in to your inner architect. A cold Negroni and a newly opened box of legos you may have just planned my weekend for me!

⁣
You’ll need:⁣
- A thawed sheet of puff pastry, fridge cold⁣
- 3.5 ounces or half a log of almond paste cut into 12 even-ish pieces⁣
- An egg beaten for egg wash, with a splash of heavy cream and a glug of vanilla bean paste for extra luxury⁣
- Sliced almonds⁣
- Powdered sugar ⁣
⁣
Lightly roll a sheet of puff pastry and slice into six rectangles. ⁣
Brush each rectangle with egg wash. Arrange each with two slices almond paste. Pull two corners of the puff pastry up and over the paste, pressing lightly to seal. Brush lightly with egg wash. ⁣
⁣
Transfer to a small, parchment lined baking pan and allow to rest in the freezer while the oven preheats to 425 degrees f. ⁣
⁣
Bake from chilled for 12 minutes. Remove from the oven and again lightly brush with egg wash. Top with almond slices and bake for 6-8 minutes more. Keep an eye as to not burn the almonds. ⁣

Just tryna get the most cheese on my most simple s Just tryna get the most cheese on my most simple small-batch bagel recipe. Get in on this with me: ⁣
⁣
2 Easy No Yeast Bagels⁣
1/2 cup self-rising flour⁣
4 tablespoons greek yogurt (plus a teaspoon or two more if needed)
1 large egg, beaten for egg wash⁣
1/3 - 1/2 cup grated gouda or gruyere⁣
Everything bagel seasoning⁣
3 tablespoons baking soda with 2 cups of boiling water. ⁣
⁣
Place a rack in the upper third of the oven and preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spray the paper lightly with nonstick spray. ⁣
⁣
In a small bowl, use a firm spatula to work together the flour and yogurt. Add a few teaspoons of yogurt if it feels dry and knead into a cohesive ball for 5 minutes or so. Sprinkle with a bit more flour if it gets overly sticky. Cover with a damp paper towel and gather your toppings. ⁣
⁣
Divide dough in two and roll each piece into a roughly 8-inch rope. Bring the ends around and pinch into a circle. ⁣
⁣
Sprinkle the bottom of the prepared pan with grated cheese in two spots. Pour boiling water over the baking soda and float each bagel in the water for 20 or so seconds. Use a slotted spot or spatula to transfer the bagels on top of the cheese. Brush lightly with egg. Sprinkle with more cheese and everything bagel seasoning. ⁣
⁣
Bake for 20 - 22 minutes until deeply golden and bubbling. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before slicing and smearing with cream cheese.
