This is my Dance Like Nobody Is Watching Sandwich.
I’ve been pretty humble on my blog up until this point, but it’s time I tell you something: I’m an uh-mazing dancer. (This is a bald-faced LIE!)
In my dreams, I’m an amazing dancer. In reality I’m a whole lotta elbows on the dance floor. Things get real arm-y. I also have this butt move that I’m pretty sure is flawless… but I refuse to bust that move in any sort of close proximity to a mirror. I fear I may be sadly mistaken.
I dance like nobody is watching because on a dance floor, no one is watching! Everyone is too consumed with their own possibly embarrassing butt move to be concerned with me, their elbow-y neighbor.
I’d like to take this moment to kindly suggest that we also eat like nobody is watching
Maybe that means putting peanut butter and sweet pickles on the same sandwich. Go on… I dare ya.
I am not pregnant. You can put that out of your mind here and now.
I am a little crazy. You can keep that in your mind here and now.
I topped super-seeded whole grain bread with all-natural peanut butter. I layered a mega amount of bread and butter pickles over the peanut butter and drizzled the whole madness with pure maple syrup.
How can this possibly be edible?
Oooh goodness… it’s like the taste bud fairies did an ugly backflip and blessed this combination.
The peanut butter is our earthy base flavor. The pickles are a combination of sweet and tart so they know how to play nice with base flavors. Maple syrup compliments the saltiness of the peanut butter and pickles and…. you’re still looking at me like I’m crazy.
I get it. I’m weird. You’re either on the awkward-elbow-dance-train, or you’re not.
I can feel you trying to brain-taste this combination. I can feel your curiosity. Give this sandwich a try!
Oh… I should tell you now that me and your great aunt Mary are the only two people on the planet that like bread and butter pickles. If you’re scared to buy a jar of your own, just go to her house for a quick visit. Make her a sandwich too. She’ll be into it. Trust me. Your great aunt Mary and I know what’s up.
What’s that? You want to go with dill pickles!? I respect your tenacity. Get up with the get down.
Peanut Butter and Pickle Sandwich
makes 1 sandwich
2 slices whole grain bread (extra yummy with seeded bread)
3 to 4 tablespoons all-natural peanut butter
6 to 8 slices bread and butter pickles
1 tablespoon pure maple syrup.
Spread each slice of bread with peanut butter. Top the peanut butter with pickles. Drizzle maple syrup over the pickles. Smash on the other slice of bread, peanut butter side down. You didn’t really need these directions to make a sandwich…. but this is just the sort of thing we do.

I’ve been eating PBJ and Dill Pickle sandwiches since I was 6. It was the only way I would eat a PBJ growing up because I absolutely hated peanut butter. It was sweet, sour, and slightly peanut-y. I think I’ll have to give your combination a try sometime.
Mona
I grew up eating peanut butter and sweet pickle sandwiches! ??them! My parents were from near New Orleans. My mom loved them too. Thanks for the reminder!
Margaret
adding pickles to things is like adding magic.

Speaking of adding pickles to something… You should try a shot of Jameson’s with a chaser of pickle juice. I tried that on my birthday at the recommendation of an Irish waitress, and now it’s my favorite drink.
Bebe
I’ve had that shot and I thought it would be weird but since I like pickles I gave it a go and I did like it! In fact a group of us did it and we all liked it :)

Another bread and butter pickle lover here. Mine even won first place in their section at the county fair a couple years ago. Also, as a kid, I used to eat pb&j with a slice of American cheese in the middle, so it makes sense.

Believe it or not, my sister and I used to ear PB&Pickle sandwiches growing up! But we used dill pickles… The briney pickles with the smooth peanut butter is a combo that can’t quite be matched by anything else. It’s its own kind of perfection…. Just like your dancing. My dancing on the other hand…. I just don’t do it. It’s that bad. Sandwich, yes, dancing, no. :)

I love peanut butter and pepper sandwiches so I’m pretty darn sure I ‘ll love this one! Thanks for sharing!

Peanut butter, fresh sliced tomato and a little garlic is great too – better on toast than in a sandwich. I love bread and butter pickles!
Robyn
Yeahhhhh… Def a pregnant lady sandwich…
Jayne
Now, I can totally get down on this. I’ve made my share of weird sandwiches and this would probably top my list once I get me a jar of sweet pickles.

My dad’s guilty pleasure was a peanut and mayonnaise sandwich, and last week, thinking of him, I went there. I embellished it with chili garlic sauce, and with a nod to health I added sliced cucumber. I gotta admit it hit the spot It had the grainy nuttiness of old fashion peanut butter, the richness that only best food brand can provide, salty hotness, and great crunch of cukes. Good on ya Joy, for thinking outside the box, I like the cut of your culinary jib.

“I like the cut of your culinary jib.”
I want this on a Tshirt, pleaseandthankyou.

In my cookbook I included a peanut butter-brie-green apple-caramel sandwich!! So I can totally get on board with the pickles! I love a good, crunchy pickle! And of course…PB!

My father actually does this same combo but with grits. I am now eager to try this, since it seems to work (in my mind that is). Butter pickles are such a pantry staple for our house hold, I do not think a sandwich of any kind would be complete with out it
joythebaker
grits!? this is blowing my mind.
Sarah
I AM trying to brain taste this, and my neurons just can’t form the connection. Looks like ima have to real-world try this!
Ethan
My nobody watch me dance sandwich growing up was peanut butter and cheese whiz! Haven’t had it in a while….Thanks for the memories:)
Amy
Joy, this looks amazing. I might need to go to the store in the morning and get some pickles. Thank you for such a wonderful meal idea!
Rebecca
Fact: I love bread and butter pickles (and I swear I’m not someone’s Aunt Mary). Another fact, my friends have been known to make fun of me for my love of them. Thank you for reassuring me that there are other 30 somethings with a bread and butter pickle love :) I feel less alone in the universe :)
Ashlee
I’m an 28 year old and I have ALWAYS liked bread and butter pickles, ESPECIALLY when they’re homemade by my mom and I. Check out the Better Homes and Gardens version of them under the Canning section. You can thank me later! ;)
Maris
I had to giggle at this when i realized I am really an Aunt Mary (spelled Mari in my case). I LOVE b&b pickles. I have 3 jars of them in the cupboard as we speak! I am going to try this with the white bread i made this week toasted, and I have feshly ground pnut butter. Yum. I love Joy’s mind…I can so relate…just when I was, she throws out the perfect phrase to describe it…brain taste, hahaha!
