I feel like every blog should have a safeword.
We need a word that says, ‘Um… why are you posting way less on your blog these days. Are you pregnant?’ No.
We need a word that says ‘I know you’re phoning it in with that compilation of past posts post’. It’s cool.
We need a word that says ‘Cool, you’re engaged! I’m going to unfollow you on Pinterest immediately’. It’s nothing personal. It’s a wedding thing.
We need a word that says ‘Did you really just post a recipe for ICE!?’. I’m sorry.
I was going to have our safeword here be ‘Lasagna Grilled Cheese‘… but we can’t use that anymore because that’s a thing now. Our safeword definitely can’t be ‘Chocolate Dripped Bananas’ because that’s obviously a thing. Maybe our safeword should be ‘gorilla pants’… until I get a pair. I’ll let you know when that happens. Until then, ‘gorilla pants’ is our safeword.
I’m really glad we had this talk.
Let’s talk about toppings.
I’m trying to keep it classy. It took everything in me not to throw colored sprinkles in the mix. Classing it up!
Salted pistachios are shelled and coarsely chopped. Chili-rubbed almonds are (snacked on) and coarsely chopped. Cocoa nibs are appreciated for their dark and bitter crunch. We’re ready to sprinkle!
Melted chocolate is mandatory… otherwise we just have bananas on sticks, and what fun is that?
Dip and sprinkle. Dip and sprinkle.
I love when messy things are also pretty. I think this only happens when chocolate and pistachios are involved. My kitchen is messy… and not so pretty at all.
These summer treats are exactly as advertised: chocolate and chilled, sprinkled bananas. Frozen bananas are super satisfying… like nature’s popsicles. Covered in chocolate and salty nuts, I mean….
You know the deal.
Chocolate Dipped Frozen Bananas
12 ounces dark chocolate, melted over a double boiler with 1 tablespoon coconut oil
3 large bananas, cut into thirds
popsicle sticks
chopped salted pistachios
chopped spiced or smoked almonds
cocoa nibs
Melt chocolate over a double boiler (or in the microwave, if you prefer) with coconut oil. Stir until smooth, glossy, and entirely melted.
Insert a popsicle stick into one end of each banana piece. Dip each banana into the warm melted chocolate. Shake off excess chocolate as best you can. Place dipped bananas on a parchment lined baking sheet. Sprinkle generously with chopped pistachios, chopped almonds, or cocoa nibs. Place in the freezer to harden and set.
When frozen through wrap individually or enjoy immediately.

I often make chocolate covered frozen bananas but I love the idea of classing it up with various nuts! Can’t wait to make them :) Following!

Is the money still in the banana stand?

Just made some with pistachios. Amazing. I’m afraid I’m going to have to eat every one of them. I mean, I’ll spread them out over a few days, but they’re pretty much as good as gone. Unless I get company. Then I will close the blinds and lock the door and gorge myself on them all at once so nobody else gets any.
sandra
I made a lazy man’s version of these. Thanks so much for the idea!
Ezy
Keep on gud job.@ezytoon.
Chelsea
You are the best food blogger around, Joy. I just had to say it. I don’t read food blogs because I’m not That Kind of Girl, but yours draws me time and time again because of your awesome voice. You’re a legend.
That is all.
Maxime
Looks like little pieces of heaven

I love chocolate bananas! Can’t wait to try the toppings:)
Alison Borgas
I just figured you were busy writing a book… it’s cool. And by the way, you post way more than most foodies, so that’s cool too. ;)
sandra
Thanks for the idea!! I made the lazy man’s version – more chocolate/banana ratio. https://meadowscooks.blogspot.com/2013/08/pistachio-covered-frozen-banana-bites.html
And a question: when you melt chocolate, how do you keep it smooth? When I did this it started out nicely drippy and then something changed and it became clumpy. The more I tried to get it back to melted the more clumpy and solid it became.
Rachel (De Ma Cuisine)
You should open a banana stand.
Nutcase
Oh my goodness Joy, this recipe has definitely got to be in your top 10! Inspiring and delicious! Love love
Renee @ Awesome on $20
Haha, now you’re definitely pregnant and engaged. Please photoshop some uncomfortable engagement photos and naked pregnant belly photos. It’ll be fun.
J.S. @ Sun Diego Eats
Bluth banana stand worthy.
Anna
These look great! Wish you’d done it before the Arrested Development premier =P
Alexis @ deliciousfoodideas.net
I haven’t given chocolate dipped frozen bananas a go since forever. Time to get the banana sticks out.
The only issue I have is, how do you not eat all the pistachios so there is enough for sprinkling?
Jackie
this reminds me of how my sister freezes bananas, then smothers them with nutella and sprinkles. SO GOOD. i need to try it like this too
Aravis
It’s cool, it’s cool. I’m just patiently waiting for your new cookbook.
Mel
When you figure out that Pinterest/engagement safe word, do tell. Because I’ve unfollowed A LOT of boards. A LOT.
Miss Kim @ behgopa
These look so good!! I love how you photographed the goodies right in front of the window. It looks so sunny summer day-ish! It’s like one of those relaxing, chillaxin’, nothing to do, lay around, read a good book, and indulge in something delicious kind of days. My kind of day!!
Chris
my kids grew up on frozen bananas. no chocolate? just dip them in orange juice and freeze. keeps them from turning dark. then give them one along with a little disposable cup of peanut butter and send them out to the porch for the afternoon snack! no clean-up…if you remember to ask the oldest one to collect the cups!! thanks for the memories!!
Grace
This recipe is just what I needed! Love the topping choices! I cannot wait to try this out!
Lina
that looks delicious!!!
Rach
the pistachios make me happy :)
shelly
This is a safe place. You can ALWAYS use sprinkles.
Tracy | Peanut Butter and Onion
I’m so excited to try these
Lily @ Life, Love, and Cupcakes
OMG I would love one of these right now, they look amazing!! I tend to avoid buying pistachios because my boyfriend will eat ALL of them, but I may have to hide a bag just for this!
Jackie- The Seaside Baker
THese are so cute!!! I love your little photography nook!
Lesley
I totally thought that meant you were engaged too! haha
Jamie
Yum! So refreshing for summer!
Jeanie
My son and I made these yesterday and they were awesome! We loved the pistachios and also used peanuts, almonds, and walnuts. The cocoa nibs were a hit and we sprinkled on some dried coconut (the unsweetened kind)- delicious! Ours were almost as pretty as yours- except the kid dipped ones had chocolate all over the stick. Thanks!
dani
sometimes it is the simple things in life that bring the most joy…. and I def. see lots of joy in these little treats :)
Skazka Vostoka
Beautiful photos and delicious toppings. Besides, it is very tasty!

Oh my! These look absolutely amazing, I think I am going to make them this weekend for a party I am hosting!
Have anyone tried them with white chocolate?

So.id safe word. And don’t you go feeling like you have to apologise for being away. You’re awesome whenever and how ever you post. Especially when you post about frozen bananas.

Gerry @ Foodness Gracious
I get what you’re saying about safe words. It’s kinda like this…I just returned from a cruise and in order to get my monkeys released from the kids clubs I had to come up with a “safe word” Just so nobody would steal my kids in the middle of the Alaskan Inside Passage or worse still, sign them out by mistake thinking they had their own children! Anyway I chose the word “pasta” and every counselor cracked up at this choice of secret word, I thought it was a really good choice…pshht to everyone else.
Jayne
For a moment there, I thought you were announcing about your engagement or something. I was so confused! But then the chocolate dipped bananas brought me back on track. Bananananas.
Diana
Frozen bananas, chocolate, fancy toppings…could you want anything else!
Jo
I gotta find me a way to make pops with NO wooden sticks. Teeth-scraping wood is hair raising. Love the chili-almond idea!
Rosemarie Graham
These look yummy Joy. I especially like doing these in slices. Freezing them in a ziplock and having them when you want alittle somethin, somethin special!!!!!
Lizzy (Good Things)
Oh my, I had forgotten about frozen choc djipped bananas! I used to do them for my children. Love this recipe and the post! Thanks so much.

Oh my God, what a difficult recipe…

I Love It! They look so good
Andj
Frozen bananas are such a great summer treat. I’ve always been super boring and just done plain chocolate or chopped almonds if I’m feeling dangerous but your toppings are way better! The comments people have been writing on the cutting into thirds is SO TRUE. hilarious
Caroline
Those are some fancy frozen bananas! The texture of damp popsicle sticks on my teeth skeeves me out, but I would be so down to try a sliced banana version of this!
Loved your text at the top – Some days I wonder if it’s going to take reaching my upper 50s for people to stop asking if I’m pregnant every time I say no thanks to a gin and tonic [or 5] or show up some place with less than a full grin plastered to my face ;)
JellyD
I just drooled all over my keyboard! I must do this. Immediately.
Melissa @ Treats With a Twist
Ok I thought you were engaged…then I read comments to make sure I wasn’t that person going: “Ohmagahhhhhhhh!!!!”
So, since I’m totally not that person now…
These bananas… yup, totally what I had in mind this weekend. It’s totally ok with the “phoning it in” posts bc I think they’re fab anyhow. Just keep up your hard, beautiful work…
and send me that damn second cookbook the second you have it bc I WANT it!!! :)
Love!!!
Living The Sweet Life
Now that we’ve had this conversation : GORILLA PANTS … In fact, I’m gorilla pants-ing all around town. I can’t wait until I can call my self a blogger again. Until then, I’m a 40 hr a week working – wedding planning-no time to sleep – food loving lady.
p.s YUMMM regarding the bananas!!
Ashley @ Wishes and Dishes
Ummm i personally LOVED your ice “recipe” and I made them for a party and they got more compliments than the food!!
Debbie
They do sell pantyhose that make you look like you need to shave your legs. I heard about them on Wait, Wait, Don;t Tell Me. Would those qualify as Gorilla Pants?
Abbie @ Needs Salt
I love chocolate dipped frozen bananas! They really are like nature’s popsicles. These photos are brilliant.
And I love the idea of cacao nibs sprinkled on them… <3 but it's hard to resist rainbow sprinkles, still. ;)
Kelly
Fabulous photos – these look amazing! :)
Ash- foodfashionparty
Your pictures are amazing and the bananas are perfect. Crunchy everything, you make me wanna break my diet today..
Lex
These look delish! But Joy, frozen bananas and no Arrested Development reference? I know you said you’re keeping it classy, but the Banana Stand is the definition of class! ;)
Ok, I guess you don’t have to be as obsessed as I am about AD.
Good work. Carry on.
joythebaker
always money…. always money.
Marcie @ FlavortheMoments
This is such an easy fun treat, especially for summer. It’s been a long time since I made chocolate dipped bananas, and my kids went nuts over them. Thanks for the reminder!

“Did you just get engaged? Let me unfollow you on Pinterest.” HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.
Secondly, your kitchen is pretty! Also, now I want a frozen banana.
Gorilla pants.

Frozen bananas always make me think of Arrested Development, but these look like a much classier – and more delicious – version!

erin @hooleywithaz
so amazing. it’s summer girl. that’s reason enough to not be posting as much (but, um, you have this book thing, and you know, a life, so i think you have a legit excuse). :)
Nicola
Perfect!! 3 big bananas currently staring at me from the fruit bowl (I’m a satsuma girl) No pistachios in the house so I guess I’ll have to settle for crystallized ginger *sigh*
Raj
Hi.. I’m from india…. how to make this.. If I could make it then I love to eat it.. do you gave me one
Katie
Joy- What lovely food! I’m making these tonight. I can practically feel the crunch in my mouth now. Delicious!

this is so freaking fun and so versatile! you can dip that banana in anything!
Melanie @ carmelmoments.com
My kids will devour these! Perfect summer afternoon treat.
Kezia
I’ve seen some weird shaped frozen bananas (crotch-regiony, as mentioned above) but these look beautiful. I don’t think I could keep it as classy as you though – I’d be covering them in sprinkles before I could stop myself.
mascara & mud
oh. my. days.
HEAVEN!
Averie @ Averie Cooks
LOVE these! And it would have been more than okay if you had thrown a boatload of sprinkles in because I don’t think they necessarily un-class things too much. Rationalizing here b/c I throw plenty of them in things!
The first vertical picture, with the cream drapes and tabletop shot – I love that. The light is gorgeous. And it’s just so pretty! If that was my photography corner, I could stand there all day! What a great space!
Die Glücklichmacherei
i seriously love this “recipe”. easy and mouthwatering! i’m so going to try this this afternoon!
love your blog and all the lovely pics you show!

Becca from Cookie Jar Treats
I definitely thought the same thing, haha :)

bananarama! love these choco dipped bananas… and especially the crunchy yummy adult toppings… and, for some reason, the bananas being cut into thirds is so cute and way less, um, crotch-regiony.
i have popsicle sticks so i am thinking i will be making these guys very soon!!!
gorgeous photos as always too joy! ^__^

crotch-regiony…. hahahaha!
