Let It Be Sunday, Oct 2014

-The Size of Guilt

October 26, 2014 by Joy the Baker 42 Comments

let it be sunday

[G]ood morning, friends!  This might be too many sprinkles for a Sunday morning.  A little aggressive.  I’m in Vermont this weekend teaching people how to make pie at the King Arthur Flour Baking Education Center.  The air is crispy and the trees are golden brown and otherwise drunk in love with Fall.  I’ll soon be back in New Orleans, back in my kitchen, back being tormented by cat and claw.  I hope your Sunday is mellow and more great than good.

•  This American Crime: Sarah Koenig On Her Hit Podcast “Serial”.  Have you listened!?  Riveting, obsessive storytelling.

•  The Laborers Who Keep Dick Pics and Beheadings Out Of Your Facebook Feed.  That’s has got to be exhausting.  Also… thank you.

•  The Making of the Warrior Cop.  Why we saw what we saw in Ferguson.

•  Two teenage girls run away from their Colorado home to join ISIS.  Really, tho?  The Colorado-to-ISIS itinerary.

•  The Three Sizes of Guilt.  This is quite real, concise, and accurate.

•  12 Weekend Habits of Highly Successful People:  stillness, hobbies, and priorities.

•  When Introverts Should Avoid Coffee.  Thanks for the tips, yo.

•  Persimmon Prosciutto and Brie Grilled Cheese.  Let’s just eat all the persimmons.  ALL.

•  The number of eggs a woman has predicts heart attack risk.  Cool… what else should I stress out about besides EVERYTHING!?

•  The World’s Youngest Female Billionaire.  Dropped out of college.  Revolutionized the world.  Tale as old as time.

•  Monica Lewinsky helps to put an end to cyber bullying.  Better than making purses.

•  Why Every Newborn You See On Facebook Is Wrapped In The Same Baby Blanket.  Good to know.

 •  A Kid Crying Over a Cat. “Let it all out…”

Happy Sunday!

The Serial podcast is so good. I constantly keep checking and waiting for the next one, what a great concept for a podcast.

I am absolutely OBSESSED with Serial!! My mom and I devour each new episode and then immediately wish another was available. It’s genius! Then again, I’d expect nothing less from the makers of This American Life.

I wonder if anyone else thought that “the number of eggs a woman has” meant the number of eggs she eats, not the number in her ovaries! LOL! Ooops!

Love your site….. have made many of your wonderful recipes and enjoy your rhetoric and sense of humor……..need to say that first. I am not a defender of anything going on in Ferguson, because I don’t live in Ferguson, so I don’t know what’s really going on, except what the media reports. Since September 11, 2001, cops have been expected to be the frontline in the protection of civilians from terrorists…..a double edged sword. While I enjoy many of the articles in “Mother Jones”, I acknowledge that they are not the most unbiased source of information and all that it implies. Interesting article, though!

you have an interesting perspective. i haven’t thought of it through the lens of september 11th. also you’re right about Mother Jones having some bias.

Just tryna get the most cheese on my most simple s Just tryna get the most cheese on my most simple small-batch bagel recipe. Get in on this with me: ⁣
⁣
2 Easy No Yeast Bagels⁣
1/2 cup self-rising flour⁣
4 tablespoons greek yogurt (plus a teaspoon or two more if needed)
1 large egg, beaten for egg wash⁣
1/3 - 1/2 cup grated gouda or gruyere⁣
Everything bagel seasoning⁣
3 tablespoons baking soda with 2 cups of boiling water. ⁣
⁣
Place a rack in the upper third of the oven and preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spray the paper lightly with nonstick spray. ⁣
⁣
In a small bowl, use a firm spatula to work together the flour and yogurt. Add a few teaspoons of yogurt if it feels dry and knead into a cohesive ball for 5 minutes or so. Sprinkle with a bit more flour if it gets overly sticky. Cover with a damp paper towel and gather your toppings. ⁣
⁣
Divide dough in two and roll each piece into a roughly 8-inch rope. Bring the ends around and pinch into a circle. ⁣
⁣
Sprinkle the bottom of the prepared pan with grated cheese in two spots. Pour boiling water over the baking soda and float each bagel in the water for 20 or so seconds. Use a slotted spot or spatula to transfer the bagels on top of the cheese. Brush lightly with egg. Sprinkle with more cheese and everything bagel seasoning. ⁣
⁣
Bake for 20 - 22 minutes until deeply golden and bubbling. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before slicing and smearing with cream cheese.
