[H]ello friends! I hope this finds you properly reclined and sipping on something Sunday. I’m been back in New Orleans for a week of waaaay too much Halloween fun. I dressed up as Cleopatra. Fierce with a side of crazy-eyes. I’m sorry I’m not more forthcoming with photographic evidence. I also bought a bag of Halloween candy and find that I’m mostly just eating it myself because… just let it happen. I’m packing my bags to head to the west coast for a week. I hope to see you in San Francisco and Seattle to show you how to make pie and write in your copies of Homemade Decadence. It’ll be fun!
I hope your Sunday is relaxed and mellow. I hope you over-indulge in Halloween candy even if you have to sneak it from your kid’s stash. Just hide the empty wrappers in the trash can… not like I’ve ever done that… who steals candy from children!?
Here is this week’s internet, condensed. Carry on (and on and on).
• My very favorite chef Jacques Pepin, on ketchup and other important things.
• A woman walked around New York City for 10 hours and filmed every catcall she received.
• A long read for a short weekend: The Secret Life of an ISIS Warlord.
• “How could gluten, present in a staple food that has sustained humanity for thousands of years, have suddenly become so threatening?” What the what happened? Against The Grain.
• My Life On Olive Garden. I’m getting each one of you a Pasta Pass for the holidays so GET EXCITED!
• Similarly… My Week With A Flip Phone. Committed but not insane… I mean, really.
• We Are All Confident Idiots, I’m sure of it.
• Theo Padnos on being kidnapped, tortured, and released in Syria. This piece is 100%.
• Categorize under: truth is stranger/worse/more madness than fiction. Mexico’s First Lady Of Murder Is On The Lam.
• This is really interesting: The Ten Greatest Changes In The Last 1,000 Years.
• I’m headed to San Francisco and Seattle next week! I’m giving away 4 tickets to the San Francisco pie demonstration and book signing. Comment on this post, I’ll pick four of you tonight and see you at the signing tomorrow night!! Easy, right?
• I need a kitchen blow torch because I want to make Creme Brûlée French Toast a reality for us.
• Tweet Game Strong. The very best of the very worst of the very funniest tweets.

I’ll bring the blow torch! I need some of that French toast in my life.
I read an article on Bustle expanding on the catcall video that isolated 6 things most people (mostly men) do not consider or give thought to as forms of harassment. The one that got me the most was that women are not required to interact with or respond to a man (especially a stranger) on the street. This includes that seemingly nice “compliment” that often makes women feel objectified. It hit home because so often I’ve seen (and experienced) a man commenting on a woman’s appearance or even saying hello who, when the woman didn’t respond, retaliated because they saw her as rude or inconsiderate. The idea that women are obligated to respond is the biggest issue for me.

Off topic, but are there any plans to come to the south on the book tour?! I live in GA.. :)

Wow, the article on Theo Padnos. And the gluten piece from the New Yorker was very illuminating as well. You clearly have a great “reader.” Now, I am LOVING your book and wonder when you will be back in LA. A trip to the just opened Gjusta Bakery is a MUST. You would love it. Thanks as always for your great Sunday post Joy!!!!
Barbara
I really love every article that you post in these round ups. I also, have never switched to a smart phone (yes, i am 27 years old and work in science publishing…i have a normal life), and it was so funny to read that article! I also wanted to thank you for the article on gluten. That was the best article I read earlier this week, and I am so grateful that you posted it to get the word out.
I missed seeing you in Philly this weekend but I will be catching your next tour for sure :)
Kate
First of all, I opened my latest issue of BHG and there you were! Congrats, Joy – you are all over the place…as you should be.
Second, thanks for the link to the New Yorker article. I am (still very sadly and partially in denial) gluten-free and there is so much info and opinion flying around, it’s nice to read something that is so in depth and thoughtful.
And lastly, I was a tube of Aim toothpaste circa 1985 — one of my best costumes ever!
Happy November!

I love that your Let it Be Sunday posts are thought provoking and thoughtful at the same time. Does that even make sense? Thanks for being awesome!

Loved the article on gluten, have been tested and they did find wheat as the culprit. Have been off it for two years and only cheated a couple of times and when I do hives and the throat closes a little. Have found that it could be gluten mixed in the body with another foodie. Great Let it be Sunday. Have a wonderful and fun traveling. Paulette

I am very excited that my copy of homemade decadance is due to arrive on Monday next week from Amazon (in time for christmas baking :-)). I pre-ordered (totally bribed by the beatiful prints) and was just wondering if the print will arrive with the book or seperately? Thanks!
Rachel
This was a pretty fantastic Let It Be Sunday, Joy! Especially the gluten piece; most people are crazy!
Enjoy the West Coast; please tell me you’re going back to L.A. too? If I can’t at the moment, at least you can!!
