I spend a lot of time in the kitchen. Kitchen towel tucked into the belt loop of my jeans, forearms covered in a mysterious amount of flour, scraps of crust on the kitchen table dangerously close to my camera and laptop, and dishes in the sink… always with dishes in the sink.
I spend so much time in the kitchen… trying to make it both my cooking zone and office… that I am always looking for ways to make the space feel sparkly and special even when it’s dusted in flour and filled with dishes.
My secret: a little floral kitchen bouquet with fresh herbs, a pretty soap dispenser for dish soap, a homemade sugar scrub with lemon and rosemary, and (since we must scrub pots and pans) pretty kitchen sink sponges. Just little touches to make my space feel like my own.

Let’s make ourselves a special kitchen hand scrub. It’s moisturizing, helps get rid of funky kitchen smells… I’m looking at you onions and garlic.
Our kitchen scrub comes from ingredients we keep in the kitchen. That’s no coincidence.
Granulated sugar is a great exfoliant that dissolves in water. Coconut oil is mega hydrating and moisturizing. Lemon and rosemary to brighten our sense and help banish less than stellar kitchen smells.
Mix together sugar, coconut oil (in its solid form), lemon zest, and very finely chopped rosemary. I also add two drops of tea tree oil for its heroic antiseptic qualities.
Sugar scrub fluffed and incorporated. Check!
Petite flower arrangement with just a few stems from the flower shop. I also add sturdy fresh herbs to my small kitchen arrangements. Rosemary is perfect! And it’s a great way to use and enjoy herbs. The smell is supreme.Print
Homemade Lemon Rosemary Kitchen Hand Scrub
- 1/2 cup coconut oil, in its solid state
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon zest
- 1 teaspoon very finely chopped fresh rosemary
- a few drops of tea tree oil
- Mix the coconut oil, sugar, lemon zest, rosemary, and tea tree oil together in a medium bowl. The mixture will be light and fluffy. Lightly pack into a jar with a tight-fitting lid. I like to store my scrub in the refrigerator to keep it solid and fresh.
