[G]ood morning, Monday. Good morning, January. Good morning, thick socks. Good morning, extra-hot tea. Good morning, chilly ears. Good morning, Winter.
We’re in it.
My nose has been perpetually sniffly these days, and as the sun diminishes early, I feel my energy slagging.
I’m trying to keep my refrigerator stocked with all sorts of comforts and boosters to keep my eyes up and on the prize.
This spicy, sweet Winter Lemonade is my winter elixir. This.. and bourbon, because DUH.
Here’s what we need: good sense, a positive attitude, fresh lemons, honey, fresh ginger, whole cinnamon, cloves, and cardamom. Water, too. Bourbon is optional.
Fresh lemon juice, all tart and tangy.
Combined with honey, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and cardamom pods.
Combined in a pot. Simmered with fresh ginger and left to steep.
This lemonade is tart and round. It’s soothing on the throat and spicy on the tongue. It’s such a mellow and comforting winter tonic. Here’s to us!

I’m not sure if you get notified of late messages but I was needing something “new” to drink at home during the day and I had pinned this but hadn’t made it. So perfect right now. Thank you again and always!!

I’ve just made this and it’s gorgeous! I’m drinking it warm but think it will be really refreshing cold too!

I don’t know how many more times I’m going to comment, this week – but again, SO good! It’s like a cider, but with lemon, which to me makes it so much better! Bravo. You’re amazing. Keep it up.
Lily
This is SO good. And easy ;) Made it twice now & loving it!
Maddy
Looks and sounds delicious. Your pictures are beautiful, too.

This recipe is the best, I have made it 3 times in the last week. Add a splash of Tito’s and it will be your favorite drink. I have been getting Meyer lemons at Sam’s Club for a good price. Thanks for sharing this awesomeness.

I think I could try this for a night-at-home with my girls!

Great recipe for home winter treatments :) It’s all natural and taste great, everyone should try this before taking medicine when feeling like getting a cold.

I just had to tell you, because I thought maybe you’d think it was entertaining, but I was scrolling through your blog and my mind somehow read “Garlic and Cloves” not Ginger. Garlic lemonade does not sound good, so I was relieved when I realized I had just read it too fast.
joythebaker
gah! i knew i would make that mistake. thanks for catching it!

Just made this today and not only was it super easy to make but I am loving the ginger and lemon together. Kind of wish I knew about this when I was pregnant with my daughter as all I wanted to do was drink lemonade. This will definitely be a staple in my fridge until the snow melts off the ground….which in Canada could be April or May :)

I’m so excited to try this recipe. So delicious! So inspirational!

I made a ginger lemonade last summer–so good! (https://www.fchem101.com/2014/09/sparkling-ginger-lemonade/) I love the addition of warm spices to make it all wintery and comforting.
Claire
Whoa, JTB. Even better on the second day.
Linda Roy
Your photography – gorgeous. And the lemonade looks delicious. Definitely making this.

Oh, this lemonade sounds so good! I’ll be making this the next time I get the sniffles or am feeling ill during the winter.

200% in with this.

I need this winter tonic. Preferably with bourbon. Adding it into my post today on kitchen remedies for a common cold. Be well, Joy!
sundiegoeats
Hmm now I’m thinking of all the other juices you could add spices too – blood orange cloves sounds particularly nice :)
Acacia
I love the idea of a winter lemonade!! I’m definitely going to try this soon.

Joy, I love all those ingredients, thanks! I just got my Door to Door Organics delivered and got 3 big lemons. I always have ginger in my refrigerator. I make ginger “tea” a lot with my fresh ginger and just add the honey after the water is almost cooled so it still keeps the good bacteria in the raw honey.

Winter lemonade + bourbon may just be glass of heaven!
rachel
Oh, Joy, I need one of these, like, right now. Haha, looks awesome!
Kathryn
Mmm I love the idea of a winter lemonade!! (Especially with bourbon!) This looks beautiful and refreshing and like the perfect kind of pick-me-up for cold January afternoons.

Please explain what you mean by “2 inches of ginger”.
joythebaker
A ginger root that measures two inches in length!
Elisabeth
This looks delicious!! I wish I had cardamom pods; I only have ground cardamom. Would that work?
joythebaker
Hi Elisabeth, it would but use it sparingly! Add a bit and then give it a taste and add a bit more if needed!
Ella
Wow, this looks and sounds amazingly refreshing! Way to beat those winter blues.

i am sick, so i’m thinking this i will make this lemonade and drink it hot. perhaps it will cure what ails me, hot toddy-style. thanks joy
Lauren // lavender + vine
I agree, I was just thinking that this would make a fabulous tea. Maybe thats just because it’s so cold that all I want to consume is soup and tea though…

Winter in NOLA is deceptive. I remember looking at the thermostat thinking, “40 degrees, not bad” (after coming south from South Bend, IN) and then freezing! The dampness is bone-chilling! This lemonade and your thick socks sound like the perfect remedy for the cold!
Megan at Lush to Blush
This sounds absolutely delish!! And I would imagine so soothing too. Must try!

Ooh I love this lemonade for winter! Ginger is good for so many reasons. Can’t wait to make this!

Sounds like a preview of summer. I could use that now. Raining in Oregon. The lower acreage is under water….it looks like we have two ponds. It is still dark when I go fee the animals at 5:45 am. I could use a little taste of summer.

Mmm I definitely need this in my life here in the Netherlands!
larissacostella
This sounds utterly fantastic, and just what I need to not get that cold that EVERYONE around me has! Lemonade Defense.

I have been following Joy the Baker since a time ago. My recipe of lemonade is with ground ginger. I will try to make this recipe for my kids. I was looking for some like this with natural ginger. Years ago I made a lemonade with natural ginger uncooked and it tasted awful. Now I know the secret is to cook the ginger.
Vicky
I’m going to make this tonight! Seem to have come down with a cold and I think this will really help my throat. As always beautiful photography and love the straws! x
