Hello and happy Sunday to you and yours! We’ve made it through January which means we’re officially on the 2016 train and there’s no stopping us now. This week I’ve been working hard on Brunch cookbook photos with Jon. It’s my third book and it’s written, getting all sorts of editing fixes, and Jon and I are making pancakes, waffles, and scones in photographing the book. Spring 2017, the Brunch book release date, will be here before we know it… but can we please go slow?

The Wired article about chicken farming was very interesting. But it was surprising how lightly it touched on the welfare issues associated with battery farming – it almost read like a defence of the practice. It would have benefited from exploring how European countries which have already been transitioning away from battery farming have adapted. In the UK for example it has been illegal since 2012 to battery farm chickens, following an EU-wide ban. It’s widely accepted that battery farming chickens is cruel, and there was a lot of public scandal about the practice which led to the ban.

Mahalo Joy for sharing the magnificence that is Jaws on Maui. I had the honor of calling Maui my home for 27 years. Until you’ve witnessed waves like that, you can’t begin to wrap your head around anyone riding them and living to tell about it! There is something profoundly beautiful and poetic about ocean waves and the incredible surfers that ride them. I’m happy that justice reform is becoming such a hot button issue. I think as a society it’s so easy for us to lock people up and forget about them, remembering only their crimes and not their humanity. Years ago, I read a heartbreaking (and amazing!!) book by Edward Humes, “No Matter How Loud I Shout.” It made an indelible impression on me and I hope you’ll read it. Last year I read “Just Mercy,” by Bryan Stevenson. It reminded me of how much work is left to do!
