My to-bake list is strong this week, inspired by Spring and that coveted extra hour of daylight we get to enjoy this time of year. We’ve got creamy pie and Easter bread in our future! If you’re paying attention to the news these days you know it’s pretty dark out there with Trump and Hillary and campaign ads and talking heads. If you’re not paying attention to the news, you know that Ben, The Bachelor chose the affable blonde, which was a surprise to no one because that’s what always happens. What a time to be alive, friends… what a time.
Internet news. The way we do:
• This election season is impossible to ignore and really fascinating to muddle through. It’s a hot mess out there, folks. The Great Unsettling.
• This makes me feel like we can choose something more simple for ourselves if we’d like: A millennial and a baby boomer trade places.
• Women need more sleep than men because fighting the patriarchy is exhausting. Take that 20.
• Faking Happiness on Social Media Helped Me Cope With Depression. Carry on.
• Welp… I don’t see this getting better. Inside the super secret world of the coolest girls on Facebook. Close your eyes in a deep, slow-blink…. it’s better than an eye-roll.
• Closing apps to save your phone’s battery doesn’t do a thing, but maybe make it worse. Oooh maaaannnn.
• Shall we with Carrot Cake Cupcakes with Pineapple Cream Cheese Frosting? It’s Carrot Cake season, right?
• Black Sesame Thumbprint Cookies with meyer lemon curd sound intriguing! Right on, Adrianna!
• Flower Coloring Book from House That Lars Built
• This coat is filled with blush and charm.
• Marble your laptop like the cool kids.
Have a very fine day!

I love this post every single week! I really wanted to put that in all caps but yelling isn’t kind. :-) Never have I ever wanted a laptop skin until this one. Darn you, Joy.

Thanks for sharing the Op-Ed from David Brooks at the NYT! I always appreciate your mix of baking and current affairs.

Hi Joy! I just wanted to say that I appreciate all you do. I have all of your cookbooks and check in on your blog often. I have never commented, but I am certainly a big fan!

I love this! I’ve been sick this week, so I’ve spent even more time than usual curled up with my laptop. I really enjoyed the Guardian piece about the two generations switching lives. This weekend has also meant some much-needed baking time for me–I had my first go at making hot cross buns, and they’re pretty good, although I think I will add more spices and less fruit the next time.

When I’m driving my 9 year-old and his friends around, I eavesdrop from the front seat. I’ve learned that if you’re really quiet, they’ll forget you’re there and you’ll mine treasures you won’t get from direct questioning. But it’s jarring when you hear kids talking about politics, comparing the candidates and expressing opinions as if they’re about to head to the voting booth themselves. This is the election cycle they’ll remember, a time when political conversation sucked up all the oxygen in the room and the ignited passions of adults felt familiar to them, so akin to their own youthful, unbridled rages.

Good read! So happy my fiance prefers mildly sarcastic brunettes ;)

“Women Need More Sleep Than Men Because Fighting the Patriarchy is Exhausting” FINALLY someone said it.

Great Sunday read as usual. I love the sound of the carrot cake, I see that in my future.

Besides reading the NYT, your blog is what I look forward to reading every Sunday! Of course, my addiction to your writing/cooking is not restricted to once a week. I’ve become a serious Joy devotee. Thank you! Oh…..and my nephew will be going to the Big Easy for the Jazz Festival and I referred him to your guide as one I know he can trust to give great info.

I love reading your Sunday posts…always interesting and fun links. I expected to see something about the DC eagle watch…it seem like everyone was mesmerized with the live camera feed and the hatching of the eaglets this past week. I am a little conficted watching as it is a wild nest and anything can happen but still, who can resist a fluffy baby and the close up view of the magnificient parents is amazing.

Interesting read about how social media can actually enlighten you on how you actually are happy.

Loving the marble computer. How can I convince the hubby this is a need.
