Let It Be Sunday!

May 1, 2016 by Joy the Baker 23 Comments

Let It Be Sunday!

Happy Sunday, my friends!

Did you know that Drake came out with a new album this week?  That bodes well for Drake on Cake. Fun facts we learned about Drake this album:  he loves the Cheesecake Factory, but hates to get in fights with his boo there.  So he’s just like the rest of us.  Good news.

I’m wishing you an easy, restful day!

Here’s this week according to the Internet:

•  Read the short, devastating speech Sandra Bland’s mother made to Congressional leaders.  Sandra Bland was the woman arrested in Texas, found dead in her jail cell hours later.  Debates over whether it was suicide or police misconduct still bubble nearly a year later.  The story is complex and human.

•  The Most Extraordinary Thing About Beyonce’s Lemonade.  She gets us.  That’s what it is.

•  This from Marie Claire is fascinating and strange, and infuriating, and scary and this is the world we live in:  The American Women of ISIS

•  I have tattoos I wish I no longer had.  The road to erasing those lines is tough.  I really liked this long-form piece on BBC:  Undrawing my tattoos

•  Teatox Party: how laxative teas took over Instagram, one $250,000 endorsement at a time.

•  Coachella in reality is much different from Coachella on Instagram.  We’re such frauds. We’re basically unbearable.

•  You guys. Promposals:  elaborate display often involving presidential candidates and puppies in order to garnish the attention of a teenage girl in order to ask her to a traditional high school dance known as prom.  I had to ask a dude to be my date to prom.   Admittedly, I had a really bad hair cut and a face full of painful acne, so I understand why no one was bending over backwards and throwing puppies in my direction… but I swear to God…. if I have to also ask a man to marry me, I’m all the way out.

•  This is the time I visited Whitney at the studio and she made me drink cider and I loved it.  Alco-Hual with Whitney A: cider edition.

•  Amanda Peet: Never Crossing the Botox Rubicon.  I feel like Botox always looks like Botox, not necessarily youth.  Not gonna do it.  Are you?

•  The Betch’s Guide To Trendy Fermented Drinks.  But will it reduce our fine lines and neck wrinkles?  If so… I’m in.

•  Mapping the Louisiana Locations in Beyonce’s Lemonade.  Represent.

•  I love this halter shift dress because it looks like one piece of effortless style.

Enjoy your Sunday!  I’m rooting for you.

xo Joy

    Hey Joy,
Another great mix of stories, The Tattoo removal story was very interesting, Tass is on quite a journey, hopefully she will reach a happier place sooner than later. The American women of ISIS is everything you said and more. I have talked to military personnel that have been there and seen the horrible results of life under ISIS for any women. Western women are considered the lowest of the low. I hope we never have to deal with the horror of ISIS on our own soil.
On a lighter note some of the “Drake on Cake” cakes made me laugh out loud. Also a reason for mirth …….. I have decided to make the Juicy Strawberry Pistachio Bake as my 1st solo baking attempt, other than cookie dough cookies that is.
I’ll keep you posted on how it does or doesn’t turn out.
Have a great week and thanks again for the great posts

I try to resist your Sunday entries, but no, I check just about every week (and catch up on the rest of the blog). First husband asked me after seven months and we married within that year. I found out later all kinds of things, including that he smoked! My beau now, he’s the best. We met seventeen years ago today (May Day/JazzFest thing). We married around 3-4 years ago. I asked him, because I realized if something happened to me, I wanted him to have anything I had. We married in the backyard of friends, with another friend attending, four of the five of us in pajamas, grilled tuna steaks, toasted with champagne and sparkling cider. Our friend who performed the ceremony – five minutes long – had cancer; he was so excited to do this he rallied, living almost a year longer than the doctors predicted. (I did find out I still needed a will; whatever I owned before without one is split between existing family and my husband.) The important event was the meeting. I figured I’d never marry again but I like that extra affirmation, and that it was left up to me.

I feel like women under their mid-40s often say exactly that about botox. I sure did–swore I’d never do it. Now at 49 and looking in the mirror and wondering why I look so much older than I feel, I occasionally second-guess myself. I guess I’m saying we shouldn’t make too strong a statement about something before we get there.

I also asked my date to to prom and I also refuse to ask a man to marry me. I’m going to cook for him ’till death do us part, so the least he can do is ask properly. Now, to find said man…

Great links, as usual. I especially love the tattoo removal story. And I loved your Kitchens We’ve Lived post earlier this week. I’ve lived and worked in many kitchens myself over the years. All unique and they all hold a special place in my heart. Your story made me re-think some of them, and it was a nice little walk down memory lane. Have a great rest of your Sunday, Joy!

Joy, I love your voice and your work. I thought you were adorable and beautiful in that video (which was so interesting!) Your round ups are the perfect combination of funny, interesting, and serious talk. Just wanted to say thanks.

Loved the video about cider. Is it weird that I miss your voice after not hearing you podcast with Tracy in so long? Miss you and I’m rooting for you this week too!

P.S. When is your brunch book going to be available? So looking forward to a new cookbook from you!

Thank you Joy for the article about Sandra Bland. In truth, her story isn’t that complex at all – a white officer overstepped his power because he felt emasculated by a black women who knew her rights. Because of that, she died and so many others die like her every day. That’s the sad but true reality of our current system.

Oh phew, that piece by Amanda Peet broke my heart. It must be a rough way to go through life depending on your looks to get you work. She’s right, we all age, but she’s missing that aging is *also* beautiful and wrinkles and grey hair don’t steal away your beauty (unless you let them). Aging women are not as marketable in the acting industry, but they are no less beautiful than they were when they started out. I wish they all could see that before they started injecting and lifting and tucking.

On promposals… the trend at my son’s school was to propose using cakes – so he needed a bit of help to whip up a chocolate layer cake with a mocha frosting. Not terribly expensive, and such a lovely gesture… Wow, had no idea this thing had gotten so out of control!! How do we start a national cake-as-promposal trend? :)
