Let It Be Sunday!

-Unless you're Oprah

June 12, 2016 by Joy the Baker 32 Comments

Let It Be Sunday!

I become a super nester in the days before I leave for a long stint of travel.  Suddenly my house is stocked unflinchingly with toilet paper, there’s no sign of running out of paper towels, there’s cat food for months, and all of the sheets are clean and laundry is away… man, it looks like I run a tight ship.  I don’t run a tight ship.  It’s a miracle that I run a ship at all.  It’s just that… I can’t come home to a house all flummoxed.  Airports are hard enough.

If you’re keen to follow along with my summer travels, find me on Instagram and joythebaker on Snapchat.

I hope you’re well into some summer weekend vibes with pancakes and iced coffee.  And I hope you have some saucy travel in your near future.

Here’s some of what we need to know:

•  This is a really interesting weekend read and school closures are in the news a lot this week:  Choosing a school for my daughter in a segregated city.  Also, take a listen to the latest Embedded podcast: The School.

•  What if my clients got the same treatment as Brock Turner?   Thoughts from a public defender.  Perspective.

•  How race and privilege affect sentencing.  Yea, I’m pressing our buttons because they need to be pressed.

•  How an innocent teenager confessed to murder.  “Think about it,… I’m convinced that you’re guilty, so everything that you say, everything you do, is going to be perceived through that guilt-presumptive lens. Think about the way the interrogation process is structured––I’ve already determined the truth before I go in there, so what I’m trying to do is verify the way I perceive things to be, to what I think the truth is.”

•  Microsoft finds cancer clues in search queries.  I recently Googled ‘numb chin’ and it sounds like I’m a goner.  I’ll be expecting a call from a physician and Microsoft shortly.

Unless you’re Oprah, be yourself is terrible advice.  This is really interesting.  Authenticity aside, let’s just try sincerity instead.

•  Other Female Firsts Covered Like Hillary’s Historic Nomination.  My favorite is the quote about Sally Ride, “Is space ready for women?”. Hardly.

•  How did FreakShakes become a thing and you didn’t tell me about it? Here goes nothin’.

•  I Quit Showering And Life Continued.  But where will I do all my deep thinking?

•  I feel like I should get another cat just so I can name her Olivia Pope.  I mean… right?  No link.  I’m just binge watching Season 5.

•  I’m using this recipe from Food&Wine and KitchenAid to cure egg yolks.  It takes three days.  I’m expecting MAGIC.

•  Your romantic first date?  Restaurants hate them.  And they see you swiping through Tinder when your date goes to the restroom.  You guys… this is really bad.

•  This handbag is made out of sticks.  So.  There’s that.

•  I’m reading two things:  the latest issue of Cherry Bombe magazine and (I know I’ve mentioned this before), The Queen of the Night (which really is so so good and I’m still reading it because it’s so good that I’m reading it slowly).

•  Ellovi makes my favorite body lotion, all natural, super hydrating and it smells like being on vacation.

Have a wonderful day.  Get some sun on those shoulders.

xo Joy

Great blog Joy. I did a double-take when I saw the picture of Elizabeth’s because I thought it was my photo for a split second. We loved Nawlins’ and Elizabeth’s – who doesn’t? And I just posted an article on Elizabeth’s and other New Orleans food yesterday! I love that your recipes are so unique and different. Here’s to blogging and Praline Bacon… smile.

It’s Thursday, but I’m just getting to Sunday (some weeks are like that). You are pushing all the buttons. But you’re right. They need to be pushed. Extra great roundup this week, even though some of it makes my heart sad. Thanks for making us think. Good travels to you!

When I used to travel a lot more for work, I’d make the extra effort to put clean sheets on my bed, empty the wastebaskets and run the dishwasher before I left. People thought I was nuts, but coming home to a clean apt after a stressful trip (I hated my job) made an amazing difference to my overall state of mind.

Olivia Pope is a great name for a cat. But she’d have to be majestic.

This series has legit become an essential part of my Sunday routine. I came years ago for the recipes and stayed for your genuine, funny, honest voice. You write about the things that matter in a way that promotes self-care and reflection. I’m living in a new city just for the summer and am stuck in a series of limbos but these posts root me in a way I never anticipated. Thank you.

    Good group of picks.
The totally skewed outcome of the Brock sentencing is a travesty. It hurts my heart to think about the pain the young woman involved in this is dealing with. I’ll leave it at that
On a happier note I’m having an Ultimate Breakfast Sandwich, courtesy of Shutterbean, as I’m reading this. Thank you for putting one of her recipes in an earlier post Joy. It was a win win for me, with healthy meals from her I can indulge in your great desserts and still lose a few pounds a month.
    Have a great weekend

Those freak shakes look amazing, so you might try Black Tap in New York – they have Instagram, too, and crazy-amazing looking shakes of awesomeness. = )

Great links, as usual! I am really loking forward your Sunday posts each week.
One thing I do just before leaving the house to travel for a while is putting fresh linens on the bed… Clean sheets make it even better to get back home :)

The stick bag was around when I was 15, that was almost 45 years ago., We would put in a pretty scarf in it and tie knots on the outside. I was our favorite purse and super cheap. They were a buck or two. So every teenager had one. Wow, can’t believe they are back.

Thank you for “pushing our buttons” with the think pieces about the disgusting Turner case. Never before has a big news story left me reeling as much as this one. I know it’s terrible to say but I hope that boy gets what he deserves.

The news about that story hit the day I finished the feminist, fight club-inspired book, Dietland by Sarai Walker. Read it!!!
