Let It Be Sunday!

July 24, 2016 by Joy the Baker 53 Comments

Let It Be Sunday!

I don’t much like the news this week.  I don’t much like it at all.  I’m tired of the Republicans yelling at me.  I’m tired of hearing people dissect all of the yelling that they did, as if I needed some sort of translation.  I’m preemptively shrinking away at the Democrats yelling at me because I don’t much want to hear or dissect that either.  This election cycle is just… is it over yet?  I’m not ambivalent I just don’t want all that’s being dished out. I want noise cancelling headphones and a trashy novel and really dark sunglasses.

Here’s some of the Internet for you Sunday:

•  Why Democrats and Republicans Literally Speak Different Languages.  Words and messages in these election times are very carefully crafted, with pointed partisan agendas woven into simple words.  One side uses the word ‘alien’ while the other uses the word ‘immigrant’.  Same concept, very different vibe.  Sure, this is nothing new… but do we really need further divisiveness in that way we interact and speak of and to one another?

•  My parents and two caregivers took care of my grandparents at the end of their lives.  Those are hard years, months, and days.  Lessons in love and patience, and grace and selflessness and seeing their care was a deeply powerful message growing up.  Read this, about hospice caregivers:   A Tender Hand in the presence of Death

•  A very good weekend read!  An excerpt from Dave Eggers’ new novel:  Heroes of the Frontier.

•  Is a child who is ‘old enough to ask for it’ too old to breast-feed?  No.  Yes.  Wait… how about you decide what’s best for you and the person you made with your body?  Sweet.

•  It’s weird that we have to detail this sort of thing, but it’s important.  ‘Important’ in a relative sense.  ‘Important’ meaning it’s likely not all that important at all… you just don’t want to sound like an insensitive ass when other people are truly hurting.  How NOT To Mourn A Deadly Terrorist Attack On Social Media

•  Can Turmeric Heal Our National Inflammation? I mean… seems like an easy quick fix, right?  Worth a shot.

•  Let’s get out and play (and save on dollars):  9 Super Cheap Summer Friend Date Ideas

•  Put your food brain on this combination.  I think it has legs.  Let’s experiment soon! Watermelon Tomato Margaritas.

•  This Muffuletta Pasta Salad  is ideal for your summer potluck excursions.  Meat and cheese and carbs and olives… so, go!

•  I think at some point in 2009 I vowed I would never wear a halter top ever again.  I think I’ve changed my mind with this casual cool Amalfi Halter Dress from Ann Taylor.  Real quick though… what do I do with these boobs in a halter dress?  That’s what I haven’t quite figure out.

•  This book is in my queue:  Sweetbitter.  Have you read it?

•  I’m doing it up on Facebook Live and last week I made The Best Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies.  Join me every Tuesday afternoon!

Enjoy your day!  We’re in it, amen!

I often have to ask “what can I do with these boobs” in every outfit. Life is hard.

As a mom who breastfed for, ahem, a long time….Thank you for that sweet article. It made me laugh. Being a mom just has to involve a certain amount of humility and a decent dose of “mind your own f-ing business”. I didn’t PLAN on nursing a three year old, but I did what works for us, I encourage other moms to do the same. And worry less about whether it’s ok.

Joy, here’s your halter top/boob solution: https://www.target.com/s/adhesive+bra Not something you’d want to wear all the time, but perfect for the occasional backless, sleeveless, summery confection!

I love the article about hospice nurses. My mum is a hospice nurse and she’s truly one of the most inspirational people I know. The work she and the other hospice workers do is incredible.

Bryony, cheers and hugs to your mum. My close friend’s mother just passed away Friday surrounded by her daughters and wonderful hospice nurses. A few years ago, another friend lost her mother to cancer with a lot of support from hospice. I am so glad there are such wonderful people out there working hard to bring love, comfort and dignity to death.

The dress is great. Maybe a halter dress is in my future. I will go to Amazon to get the book! Thanks for the recommendation. I know you need to watch the Dems convention! We all need to see the contrasts before November. The shouting is getting to me too. I actually went into another room for parts of the Republican one. The sound was overload on my tiny brain. Thanks for more informative posts.

I usually stay away from politics but I would not refer to the repubs as yelling when Hillary is incapable of speaking at less than 2000 decibels and what she says are usually lies . We better wake up to what’s going on in this country and quit acting like we are safe , secure , and economically stable , quite the opposite . Maybe trump is not your guy but he is committed for the people unlike the corrupt democrats . Btw the cookies look amazing .

Yep. Gayle, realize your reflexive aversion to Hillary could be leading you in the direction of a sociopath- is it that important you stay away from her? Important enough to abort the entire country?

A dress should make you *feel* as marvellous as you look and an uncomfortable underwear situ might detract from that. Feel marvellous!

    Happy Sunday :-)

P.S. 8 weeks til I come to New Orleans for a visit. Can. Not. Wait.

Sweetbitter was a great read! It reminded me the slightest bit of Great Gatsby, and the way she describes the wines made me taste them in a whole new way. It’s an excellent candy read.
