Let It Be Sunday, 116!

April 24, 2017 by Joy the Baker 19 Comments

Hello Dearhearts,

It’s crazy how quickly a Saturday can turn into a Sunday.  Fast enough to make your head spin so please excuse the tardiness of this post.  I figure we need some time to ease into this Monday, and these links might be just the right encouragement.

I’ve spent the weekend with my maj Tracy in Nashville. She hustled across the country to join me for a worky work thing, and we ate loads of chicken, barely complained about all the rain, and made friends with strangers.  Tracy is my favorite person to meet strangers with.  She asks great questions and is easy to laugh.

I hope this week is sweet and easy.  Here’s some reads to see you through the start:

•  I’ve watched this TED Talk on creativity and success three times this week.  It’s a perspective change about creation and mastery over outcome. Take in these words: Embrace the near win.

•  Stop handing the check to my husband, I can pay too.  I, too would ask that you just look at the credit card name that says Joy on it before handing the sign receipt to the man at the table. Can I at least get that much?

•  Honestly one of the best meals I’ve had in New York City came from a halal food cart.  This is a beautiful true story about slicing, seasoning, routine, rules, and the aching backs that create one of New York’s street signatures:  A day in the life of a food vendor

•  This story has a beautiful beautiful way about it. Deaf and Blind.

•  Interesting interesting especially for a Monday:  The United States of Work.

•  Feel how you feel how you feel how you feel:  The Case For Being Grumpy At Work

•  Quick note:  I was on the Today Show last week and this is me and Matt Lauer whisking things.

•  My friend Tsh Oxenreider spent a year traveling the world with her family and her book about it is here:  At Home In The World

•  In which our lady bodies are again politicized just in their mere function: In jail, pads and tampons are bargaining chips

•  Remember these Cauliflower Rice Burrito Bowls? AND they sell cauliflower rice at Trader Joe’s so you don’t even have to deal with a food processor!

•  Very important dessert reminder:  Meyer Lemon Bar Brûlée.

•  I was just in Nashville for a few days and I don’t know much, but I do know to get the chicken at Josephine.  It’s good advice and I’d want you to know as well.

Be well.  I think you’re wonderful.

xo Joy

I got lost in this (fascinating, somewhat upsetting) article this week and thought you might appreciate it too. It reminded me of the kinds of pieces you share on Sundays.

After having been one at the CL Fair in Nashvegas this weekend, I can attest that both you and Tracy are great at meeting strangers! It was so fun to meet you and see you in action, and get the new book…which my friend Alison and I cooked 3 things out of immediately. You were right about the praline bacon.

YES. The check being handed to my husband is one of my pet peeves!!! My husband thinks it’s handed to him because he’s usually the one to ask for the check. But when the card says “Elizabeth” there’s really no good explanation for returning it to him.

You were amazing!! Thanks for sharing the video — it was a little inspiration to start my week.

With the credit card thing, my list of complaints go on. I once had a bartender notice that the card belonged to me and then went on to say how lucky my now-husband was that a woman was paying for him because that never happened. So awkward. I couldn’t believe it.

The New republic article on work is truly compelling, and it’s a subject I think about and struggle with a lot — especially as an economist. I want to host a book club solely to discuss this article.

I watched the Today show clip later that day and you were fabulous. If these types of appearances led to an offer for a show of your own, would you do it? Because you’d be awesome. Your Facebook live posts are always the best and even when the iPad slips off the tripod, you’re still more genuine and fun to watch than most of the people on the Food Network are these days. :-)

Just tryna get the most cheese on my most simple s Just tryna get the most cheese on my most simple small-batch bagel recipe. Get in on this with me: ⁣
⁣
2 Easy No Yeast Bagels⁣
1/2 cup self-rising flour⁣
4 tablespoons greek yogurt (plus a teaspoon or two more if needed)
1 large egg, beaten for egg wash⁣
1/3 - 1/2 cup grated gouda or gruyere⁣
Everything bagel seasoning⁣
3 tablespoons baking soda with 2 cups of boiling water. ⁣
⁣
Place a rack in the upper third of the oven and preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spray the paper lightly with nonstick spray. ⁣
⁣
In a small bowl, use a firm spatula to work together the flour and yogurt. Add a few teaspoons of yogurt if it feels dry and knead into a cohesive ball for 5 minutes or so. Sprinkle with a bit more flour if it gets overly sticky. Cover with a damp paper towel and gather your toppings. ⁣
⁣
Divide dough in two and roll each piece into a roughly 8-inch rope. Bring the ends around and pinch into a circle. ⁣
⁣
Sprinkle the bottom of the prepared pan with grated cheese in two spots. Pour boiling water over the baking soda and float each bagel in the water for 20 or so seconds. Use a slotted spot or spatula to transfer the bagels on top of the cheese. Brush lightly with egg. Sprinkle with more cheese and everything bagel seasoning. ⁣
⁣
Bake for 20 - 22 minutes until deeply golden and bubbling. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before slicing and smearing with cream cheese.
