Let It Be Sunday, 128!

July 16, 2017 by Joy the Baker 27 Comments

Hello friends!

I hope this Sunday morning finds you happy and well.  I’ve been in Denver for the past few days where I’ve walked up a mountain with a new friend, eaten the best fried chicken sandwich (not hyperbolic) at Stoweaway, and visited the art museum and botanic gardens.  It’s been a very vacation-y type of vacation but I’ll tell you what… I must have acclimated really well to the below sea level swamps because this altitude has done a number on me.  And I know!  I’m not even that high up!

Thank you for being here.  Thank you for reading these words and sharing your thoughts. Thank you for being as kind and generous as you are. You’ll also see below that I’m headed to Detroit and Columbus at the end of the month and if you’re in or near those cities, we have a chance to say hello and hug!

Here we are:

•  An iceberg the size of Delaware just broke away from Antartica and what’s weird is that we all keep acting like this isn’t happening because maybe it’s hard to know what to do? Well… truth is, it’s getting too hot and we’re distinctly destroying our beautiful world.

•  We’re extincting ourselves and each other: Earth’s sixth mass extinction event is underway. How’s that feel? Not good. I agree!

•  We’re still paying attention to healthcare, ok? Here’s a breakdown of who is in and who is out in the latest Senate healthcare bill.

•  An old read from David Sedaris on Our Perfect Summer.

•  Modern Love says, stop breaking up. Ok sounds easy and honestly, kinda risky.

•  Don’t tell kids, but bedtime is a social construct and they still have to take a bath and put on their pajamas and get in the dang bed even if the sun is still out. Rules are rules I think because parents need wine and quiet.

•  Here’s an abbreviated list of everything Anthony Bourdain hates.  Tony is a curmudgeon I love and understand and I feel like he and I would have similar sentiments on things like flip-flops and the Food Network and I would be very intimidated to eat sushi with him (not like I’d ever get an invitation).

•  I love this: Beautiful Interiors with New York’s discarded furniture.

•  Always down to try a new biscuit recipe:  King Arthur’s Baking Powder Biscuits.  How about today?

•  Welp. There goes the neighborhood: Korean BBQ Burritos at home.

•  A good while ago I made Toasted Marshmallow Milkshakes and not a summer goes by that I don’t think about it fondly!

•  I’ve got two book signing coming up if you’d like to come out and say hello!

I’ll be in Detroit, Michigan on Thursday July 27th at Pages around 6:30pm.

You can also see me in Columbus, Ohio on Monday August 7th at The Book Loft around 6:30pm.

Lastly I’ll be in Portland, Oregon again on Saturday September 16th at 2pm at Powell’s Books!

•  Here’s a thing we’re doing apparently. It’s lipgloss with a flower in it that turns to a natural pink according to your ph balance.

•  Here’s what’s in my summer travel bag to inspire creativity when I’m on the road: a polaroid mini camera with film, a set of travel water colors, these clever travel watercolor brushes, a watercolor notebook, and a few of my favorite pens.

Enjoy today! Don’t melt.

xo Joy

Thanks for sharing the Anthony Bourdain article, I read it on my lunch brake at work and I couldn’t eat as I was laughing hysterically… I really needed that today!!! Thanks Joy for bringing me joy with every single post of yours

I think it’s genuinely awesome that you are concerned about global warming and use your blog as a platform to bring awareness to the issue (such as in this post, with a link to the article about the iceberg breaking off…). However, I’m always saddened to see that despite your seemingly genuine (and founded) alarm about global warming, you continue to post recipes containing meat. I’m sure you know that animal agriculture is a leading cause of global warming. Please consider doing away with your recipes containing meat, in the hopes that your platform can be used to encourage others to eat more plant-centric diets and do their part to help combat the global warming crisis.

When I read your posts and recommended reading, etc., you make me feel like we’re still all in this together. That’s something I don’t feel at one time or another during the day after reading/watching the news, checking out social media, etc. Thanks, Joy.

Yay- so pleased you’re coming to Cbus! It will give me an excuse to pick up your newest book and thank you for all your recipes that make me look good! Fox in the Snow is a wonderful coffee shop/bakery that has the BEST biscuits with jam I’ve ever had in my life (and I’m a connoisseur). The North Market is a great spot with wonderful vendors including the original Jeni’s (grab a seat upstairs overlooking the flower shop and produce vendors-best seat in Columbus), and Lineage is my favorite spot for amazing craft beer and they make a mean Bloody Mary.

Those baking powder biscuits are very similar to mine, I omit the sugar and add another teaspoon of baking powder. The folding makes them perfect. Cut them in squares for ease and zero waste.

I lived in Denver back in the late 70’s. My home life was volatile, to say the least, and I was labeled a ‘troubled’ teenager…because I would quite often ditch high school! I instead chose to round out my education by taking a bus to the downtown art museum, the Molly Brown House, the zoo, tour the capitol building & the mint. I’d spend the day at the museum of nature & science and the planetarium…and of course, I’d also EAT during these rebellious outings! Thus began my culinary adventures of dining solo all around the Mile High City! Of course, marijuana wasn’t legal waaaaay back then, but it was after all The 70’s! It’s a miracle that I can remember these adventures at all, but I do…with pride & fondness!

Thank you. As much as I love your blog and Instagram, these Let it Be Sunday posts are my favorite. You’re the best reason to get up early, grab a cup of coffee – maybe two – some fruit and toast, and then spend the next hour being enlightened, informed and amused – sometimes doubled-over laughing. I love Anthony Bourdain too!

I’m not one to point out typos (they’re honesty not something worth getting worked up about), but I sort of love your typo in the first sentence about your “best friend chicken sandwich”. Freudian slip perhaps? Was the sandwich so good you wanted to make it your best friend? Or is this the type of sandwich you would want to make for your best friend? Hmm… new recipe idea?

Well, well, well. So, you go up a mountain with a new friend, and then suddenly there’s mention of a best friend and chicken sandwich… This is troubling. Does your new BFF know what fate lies in store?

⁣
2 Easy No Yeast Bagels⁣
1/2 cup self-rising flour⁣
4 tablespoons greek yogurt (plus a teaspoon or two more if needed)
1 large egg, beaten for egg wash⁣
1/3 - 1/2 cup grated gouda or gruyere⁣

3 tablespoons baking soda with 2 cups of boiling water. ⁣

Place a rack in the upper third of the oven and preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spray the paper lightly with nonstick spray. ⁣

In a small bowl, use a firm spatula to work together the flour and yogurt. Add a few teaspoons of yogurt if it feels dry and knead into a cohesive ball for 5 minutes or so. Sprinkle with a bit more flour if it gets overly sticky. Cover with a damp paper towel and gather your toppings. ⁣
⁣
Divide dough in two and roll each piece into a roughly 8-inch rope. Bring the ends around and pinch into a circle. ⁣
⁣
Sprinkle the bottom of the prepared pan with grated cheese in two spots. Pour boiling water over the baking soda and float each bagel in the water for 20 or so seconds. Use a slotted spot or spatula to transfer the bagels on top of the cheese. Brush lightly with egg. Sprinkle with more cheese and everything bagel seasoning. ⁣
⁣
Bake for 20 - 22 minutes until deeply golden and bubbling. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before slicing and smearing with cream cheese.
