Let It Be Sunday, 135!

September 3, 2017 by Joy the Baker 26 Comments

We’ve got fires and floods and smokey skies and swampy days and we’re going to make it through all of them.

I hope you are happy and safe this week.  Enjoy this long weekend, we deserve the rest before we push through this last part of the year.

•  I’ve seen this in New Orleans more than any other place I’ve lived  —  When it comes down to it, people don’t turn away from one another.  Why America Needs The Cajun Navy.  Also  —  A view inside the Houston homes hit by Hurricane Harvey.  There’s been lots of talk about the nature of the storm and the nature of how Houston was built.  We have problems to solve and people to get back on their feet. That’s what’s certain.

•  Is it possible that our problem is too much balance?  It’s the grit and stress we need sometimes. I mean… right?

•  How to get through a breakup without losing friends.  I’m going to write the follow-up piece entitled Burn It All Down, Having Fewer Friends Is Actually Great.  (Working title)

•  Getting ourselves organized (at least for breakfast) next week:  Future freezer smoothies.

•  I’m cooking from this book this Fall:  Feed the Resistance.

•  I’ve considered this perspective this week.  Give it a read and let me know what you think:  Melania Trump and the Chilling Artifice of  Fashion.

•  This is interesting and this is among us:  The Rise of the Violent Left.

•  I’ve really been enjoying this podcast: The New Washington.  The episode with Senator Jeff Flake is really interesting.

•   Tron saw me reading this article about cats falling from great heights and got nervous… then I told him he might want to go on a diet.  How can a cat survive a high rise fall?

•  For as much time as I spend in hotel rooms… which isn’t a lot, but does feel like enough… I’m going to add worrying about this to my to-do list:  The Hotel Room Hacker

•  A magazine revolution c/o Elaine Welteroth:  Teen Vogue’s Refashionista. Really great read!  Should we get a subscription for Teen Vogue now?  YES.

•  Ranking the zodiac signs by how likely they are to snap and kill you.  How weird is it that I’m proud to be #1.  Don’t come for me, k?

•  If you’ll allow me to talk about earrings for a quick moment.  These giant brass hoops are very exciting to me.

Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do,

xo Joy

Joy – As always great thought provoking and interesting reads. I appreciate these posts like no other. In particular I found the article on Melania a great read. I have been immersed in other areas related to Harvey and studiously avoiding mention of #45 because I feel my attention is best spent in aspects that allow me to understand and help those in need. When I heard about a kuffuffle regarding Melania I didn’t really understand what it was all about. I think the article you shared was excellent articulation about why so much of the discourse surrounding both Melania and Ivanka has frustrated me. They are removed, and seem passively uninterested, but I haven’t been able to pinpoint my thoughts on this. This article and Rhonda Garleick’s commentary have given me a lot to think about.
Secondly, I am adding the Feed the Resistance book to my amazon cart, so thanks for the recommendation. Also kudos to Wired for finally helping me to understand this falling cat situation. I have always assumed they were magicians or something. Science!!! Give Tron my best, and let him know that at least this lady still sort of thinks he and his kin are magic.

Was first lady’s attire so scrutinized before Michelle Obama? At first, I thought the media was being meaning judging every single thing she wore. But she was great. She wore American designer clothes to promote them. She wore thing with confidence, showed fitness and strength, giving great messages to the women and minority youth in conjunction with her campaigns such as ‘Let’s Move’. I’m not that into fashion but found myself clicking on articles about what she wore recently.
But obviously this first lady, nor any of the first family is really interested in the good of the general population. They just dressed for themselves. So, can we just stop reporting on their fashion? Until they start dressing to promote America, to give out messages for America, by American designers (sorry, I had to borrow that phrase).

Why do we care what the First Lady wore? There’s a gas crisis that’s going on in Texas, about to make its way up the east cost, people flooded out of their homes, homes and businesses destroyed and we are concerned with the fashion choices of Melania Trump and her fake and vacant stare? Much like I didn’t care when they reported that Michele Obama wore 600$ sneakers to volunteer at a food shelf I don’t much care what Melania wore to meet hurricane victims. Maybe if journalists focused less on women’s fashions and appearances we’d have fewer young girls and women with eating disorders and depression issues. But thank you for pointing out such a shallow and pointless article (if anything it only pointed out that the author of that article is not a trump fan). If you want to consider another opinion about this sort of topic (which is really the topic about how women are judged by their appearances) google the Australian news anchor who wore the same suit for a year to make the point that men are never judged for their clothes the way women are (in this case his cohost who was constantly receiving emails from viewers criticizing her fashion choices).

Burn it all down and having fewer (genuine, real friends) is great. I couldn’t agree more. Having just endured a break up, I learned quickly that the majority of our/my friends cared for nothing more than the gossip. I think that is more of a reflection of what’s going on behind their closed doors than mine. Love, love, love your Sunday posts.

Joy, once again thank you for the enlightening and entertaining articles. You’re the best. By the way, I’m with you, Burn It Down Baby, take no prisoners, suffer no fools “kinda girl.” If I wrote the counter piece I would title it, “Here, Let Me Hold the Door For You, Fool.” Oh, and one more thing, we Scorpios can be stealth like, I’d fill you in on the details, but then I’d have to kill you. Haha, no seriously I would.

” Melania Trump and the Chilling Artifice of Fashion.”
This is what has been bugging me about Mnuchin’s wife, The shot of them getting off the plane looked staged. Ok, this is what it looks like when a hot model marries a nerd and they go jet setting around. Now work with the camera! Also, there is an upsetting “look how decorative the women are” feel to their public appearances. It feels like yet another misdirection to distract us from the ugliness of what the men are up to every day.
Joy, I can’t tell you how much I look forward to your Sunday posts. Truly a high point of my weekend.

I think the article about Melania T and fashion is spot on, chronicalling the missing link between humanity and artificial intelligence.

My Sunday morning ritual has extended a warm welcome to Let It Be Sunday – and I find myself thinking about these brief, pointed and wry sentences you put down on the page all the way through the week. In case you don’t hear it enough, I also thank you for your beautiful attention to our distressing political climate. Finding a woman who writes about food AND politics as well as shares her personal story AND a more global perspective is another layer in my layer cake of a life! By the way, you inspired me to have a dinner party last night where I served cocktails (never did that before), made my /your sausage with shrimp & grits. I made a serious berry blitz torte as well. I’m exhausted! Now I know why we really need a rest on Sunday. I am also quite full of bliss ! Thanks Joy ox

While I am reluctant to see inside the homes (way too many from my own friends in our neighborhood) we will survive and rebuild. We will also continue to talk about your books in our shop. Thanks for the support.
