Hello my friends!
What sort of spirits are you in this Sunday? Are you foggy from Mari Gras madness (though if you’re within 75 miles of New Orleans I don’t think you’ll be getting to this post until Wednesday )? Are you in the Olympic spirit? I think it’s the John Williams theme music making us proud to be humans in the world. Maybe instead of all that you’re looking forward Valentine’s Day chocolate and romance and lobster and diamonds. Do I have that holiday right?
Wherever this finds you, please accept this offering of Sunday links to help you ease into this day. I adore you. Here we are:
• This is an unexpected and very pleasing read about the town in Vermont that is also home to King Arthur Flour. How To Parent An Olympic Athlete
• This is interesting and yes, we’ve gone to the dogs. An exploration of New York real estate, through dogs.
• Our girl Cara Nicoletti has a new Vice show called The Hangover Show and I want to live in her living room and eat Cheeseburger Fried Rice for a long long time.
• The House That Lars Built has some of my favorite craft tutorials. I’m making this chrysanthemum flower hat and collar for Mardi Gras!
• I have a feeling that piñata making is going to be one of my future hobbies. How Mexican Pinatas Get Made.
• Welp, here we are – just a bunch of lady mammals in the world. A Brief History of How We Got Tricked Into Shaving. It’s money, always.
• Alert! New podcast for us! Forever 35. (It me. Thank you.)
• A phrase I Googled this week: How To Make An Omelet Like A French Person. And then I made myself a very satisfying omelet for dinner.
• Just last night I found myself wearing a surprisingly efficient pair of onion goggles, but now this: Tear-Free Onions are here.
• Whoa, friends! This BakeAlong recipe with King Arthur Flour looks incredible and if you make it please invite me over: Chocolate Mousse Cake with Raspberries. I’ll bring you a King Cake. Fair trade.
• I think this would make for a lovely gift for your bestie as a belated Valentine’s Day present: Bestie.
Enjoy your Sunday! Laissez les bons temps rouler!

I love your Sunday post. It informs me, makes me laugh, learn, cry in turns. I like the book and movie recommendations too.
The article on Norwich, VT. is so good. I am a California snowbird; I live in CA but spend my summers in Vermont, just down the road from Norwich in Bradford, VT. I spend a lot of time (and Money) in Norwich. I go to classes at King Arthur flour, self improvement classes, farmers markets, etc And just across the river is Darthmouth collage, science center, and the best co-op ever. I love the little towns in Vermont but Norwich is special. Great article on what makes good kids and parents.

I made homemade pinatas for friends and parties when I was living in North Africa! I even made a rickshaw shaped one. Great fun – lots of impressed friends!

I made that KAF Chocolate Mousse Cake with Raspberries….can I just say….woo hoo?!?! There is a quarter cake sitting in the fridge right now.
Really good cake to have in the repertoire. Cake crumb is tight and flavor is chocolaty. There is cream cheese in the mousse so there’s tang and the raspberries cut the sweet. I would gladly trade you what’s left for any remaining part of a king cake.
joythebaker
That is so great to know! Thank you! I’ll absolutely try the cake!

how great is Forever35!?! Thanks for the recommendation

Vegetables modified by Bayer pharmaceutical company? No, no, no. Does the world really need tear-free onions at the expense of fueling companies like Bayer? Bayer also makes nasty ass pesticides/herbicides! I don’t like tearing up when cutting onions either (I put ’em in the fridge for awhile or wear goggles), but I would totally prefer to do that than support vegetables coming from nasty pharma companies. They should stick to just making medicine for humans.

Hi, Joy
I made your original King Cake last week for the office and it went so fast, I’m glad I didn’t put a baby in this one as I’m sure it would have been gobbled up! Thanks for making me look like I know what I’m doing.
Where is N.O. Is that great looking bar?

Contact lenses keep my eyes happy while cutting onions. It’s strange that they work since they don’t cover the whole eye.
Emily
Right?? I seriously thought everyone who said onions made them cry were giant babies, until I tried cutting an onion without my contacts in and watered up so badly I ended up cutting my finger. The contacts work!
joythebaker
I’m glad to know contacts work! The onions really do make it hard to for me to see.

That’s the kind of omelet I love. Not the huge puffy dry kind in most breakfast places. My favorite place to get a French style omelet closed last year. It had a little gruyere and sauted mushrooms folded into it at the end. Hopefully that post will help me recreate it.

That Mexican piñata story was fascinating! I know the translator; Julie is a woman who brings other women with her when she rises & I’m so proud to know her. Happy to see her piece here. Great list Joy!

Love the article about how ladies were conned into shaving. Now I’m so old that I no longer have to shave my legs, but have to shave my chinny chin chin every day. WTH?

If your knife is extremely sharp, onions won’t make you cry as much (but not a 100% solution). I would need prescription goggles. Maybe my prescription swim goggles would work?
Omelets are one of my specialties. A clean pan is key. And butter.
As for hair, on my first trip to France back in 1982, I was astounded to see young women with hairy legs and armpits. That has changed; hair removal is as big here now as in the U.S.

I’ve always wanted to know how piñatas are made. Let it be Sunday is the first thing I read on Sunday.

Love my onion goggles. Got something similar at Bed Bath and Beyond. They work!
Lisa Jacobs
You never fail to inspire me! Thank you. So generous.
Alice
Weeelll I am currently in a doughnut coma, don’t know how many more I’ll eat before Wednesday, lol. I’m guessing two at least, but then there’s V-day, so who knows. I’m kind of in the Olympic spirit, it’s hard to keep track of everything when you’re busy is it not??
But, I’ll finish my coffee first and read through this list. Love seeing what you put together every week, thank you!
Rena
Now I want an omelett for breakfast right now! Although I am not a French woman but now I hope I can cook an omelett like a French woman thanks to you :)
With love from Bavaria/Germany, Rena
