Hello friends!
I want to come here and lament about how last week was a doozy… but I think I offered the same sentiment last Sunday. This feels like it goes beyond a Mercury Retrograde situation and into the real of daaaang we’re just working hard, aren’t we? The good news is that in the past few weeks I’ve had a sweet visit from my Mama and some quality paper flowering making times with new friends. Balance!
I hope you take some time to rest and restore today. I will. No question.
This week on the blog we have a major giveaway (keep an eye out!) and I’m working on more playlists to groove to in the kitchen. Until this, here’s my offering of links for reading.
• Martin Luther King’s Last 31 Hours: the story of his final prophetic speech. Indeed he was a drum major for justice. (The Guardian)
• Where The Streets Have MLK’s Name. Let this surprise you. (National Geographic)
• Please take twenty minutes to listen to this episode of The Daily Podcast about Linda Brown and Brown v. Board and desegregations in schools in the southern states and up north. It takes about some really tough continued realities and it feels really important that we all understand this. (NYT)
• I remember reading this article about Bryan Stevenson’s work towards The Memorial to Peace and Justice in Montgomery Alabama. It’s here and very important. See Oprah and Bryan Stevenson tour the memorial here. (The Atlantic and Youtube)
—-> We’re taking a hard right turn here.
• How much do you know about Busy Phillips? It’s sort of an all or nothing situation. (The Cut)
• There’s an incredible episode of Bitch Sesh (the real housewives breakdown podcast, YES!) that features Roxanne Gay (Difficult Women) and I just really feel like it validates all of our questionable reality television choices: Dames, Dogs, and Danke. (Ear Wolf)
• This week I wrote about some of my Spring Cleaning habits, just a few things to jumpstart a clear mind and fresh start. With that in mind, this article from Apartment Therapy feels like a sweet extra step: How To Infuse Spring Cleaning with Feng Shui. There are sage and crystals involved… I’m all about it.
• If you’ve got no plans this morning, maybe you should make two doughnuts. (Joy the Baker)
• My favorite face and everywhere sunscreen: Elta MD. This is not a drill, skincare starts here. Very serious. (Amazon)
• Welp… you can glitter everything now. There goes the neighborhood: Edible Glitter. (Washington Post)
• Very into the idea of Spanakopita Scones! Thank you Food52!
• Will you come eat Crawfish Beignets with us this May?
That’s all for now! Have such a lovely day!

The Spanakopita Scones are the legit bomb dot com! So tasty and worth the bake. Plus they freeze meaning that you are always just 30 mins from having these delicious beauties on your table.

I spent time in Montgomery interviewing staff at the SPLC during my PhD, and found the memorial incredibly moving.
The history of the civil war and the civil rights movement crash together in really uncomfortable ways in the city. The State Capitol still displays busts and portraits of George and Lurleen Wallace, and the First Whitehouse of the Confederacy sits a few blocks away from Rev King’s church. An incredible crucible of painful histories.

Speaking of favorite sunscreens, and eatable glitter… let’s take that apply some glitter sunscreen while we are at it.

I’m sorry you’ve not had the best week. You seem like someone who can find joy in a good news story, so here’s one for you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ez5T0NjM43k
I still haven’t made those doughnuts, but they are definitely on my list (I bought the oil in preparation). I may wait until it’s the right weather to have the kitchen door and windows open before I do any deep fat frying, and that’s still a little way off in the UK!

I love Busy Phillips and didn’t like that article, made her seem very conceited, like she does everything for attention, and brags about being a good friend. That’s not the perception from IG at all! And honestly, when celebs do ads, I laugh because I don’t feel like they are just doing it for the most one money, I feel like you know they must LOVE ranch dressing or crafting as much as I do! Stars are just like us!
joythebaker
I like her too and I guess I read that article while rooting for her so I didn’t think it was bad. :) I hear you though!
Allison
Hi! I’ve been super into making paper flowers recently and it was all kicked off by your post on how to make paper poinsettias in the fall. Would you ever consider doing another step-by-step post for another kind of flower? Because–seriously–those poinsettias were amazing… my friends and family were super impressed with them! And I’m always looking for new ways to trick people into thinking I’m impressive!
mg
I also have been inspired by your and Suzonne’s flower making! Another tutorial, yes!! How about a video class for those of us too far away to get to the Bakehouse?!?
joythebaker
That’s a great idea! I also will link to some other great flower tutorials next Sunday. Sound good?

Sounds wonderful!! Thank you Joy!
Allison
That sounds amazing! Thank you! :)

I love elta md!!

I love the idea of two single-lady donuts. But if I’m hungry for donuts, I won’t spend two hours making them. I’ll jump in the car & buy them five minutes away from my home.Life is too short.
Sharon
Thank you much for sharing that podcast…. it was very eye opening to see just how little has been accomplished in all those years. I have hope that the txt generation will get it right.. they must get it right
Rena
How wonderful you have visit from your mama! And you really should do what you intend :) Enjoy your Sunday!
