What We’re Listening To These Summer Days, 2018

June 7, 2018 by Joy the Baker 48 Comments

Hey friends!

I get my best podcast suggestions from friends and since WE’RE FRIENDS (newsflash), I thought now would be a good time to get all of our summer listening sorted in hopes of lots of summer travel adventures and road trips. Here’s what I’m listening to and what’s on my radar for the next few months.

What are you listening to? Are you holding out on any podcast secrets!? Share them in the comments below and tell us why you’re listening.  We’ll build ourselves a solid list!

In food news: I made this Tomato Cobbler with Blue Cheese Biscuits from the waaay back archives and they did not disappoint!

Enjoy today!  Here’s my offering:

•  I love each episode of Ologies with Alie Ward more than the next.  It’s a great combination of a curious, relatable mind (GO ALIE!) and a knowledgable science podcast.  It’s smart (so smart) and somehow irreverent.  I’ve found myself deeply interested in topics I never thought I’d give a second thought.

•  I’m just starting 10 Percent Happier with Dan Harris and so far I appreciate the positivity and motivation! It’s super thoughtful!

•  This podcast is about human love relationships – very raw and honest and thoughtful:  Where Should We Begin is hosted by psychotherapist and explores some really intimate moments between people.  Just like we all live! I appreciate it very much.

•  Caliphate  is a deeply lived and reported podcast by The New York Times and Rachmini Callimachi.  It’s upsetting because the world is a upsetting place.  But it’s very well done, very important, and a view we most often would prefer to set aside.

•  I’ve just started this podcast about life of Mars:  The Habitat.  Well, pseudo life on Mars with six pseudo astronauts living in a bubble at the base of a mountain in Hawaii.  What?  Yea…

•  I know I’ve already mentioned this latest 30 for 30 series about Bikram Yoga.  It’s worth mentioning again.  Compelling and surprising.  Well-researched and well-produced.  I listened to this on a longer than usual travel day from New Orleans to Savannah and was completely engrossed and moderately (ok more than moderately) disgusted.  Suffice it to say, I ordered plane wine.

•  By now you know I LOVE my housewives (Real Housewives, that is) and watch, well… all of them, and then follow up each episode with a podcast about it.  Bitch Sesh: a real housewives breakdown is so deeply funny. It’s everything I ever wanted in throwing shade and spilling tea.

•  Our friend (she feels like our friend) Jen Gotch of Ban-do is basically our Instagram mental health advocate – she has a new podcast and I’m excited about it.  Three episodes in and let’s go! Jen Gotch Is OK Sometimes (there’s an iTunes link here)

•  An audiobook:  Calypso by David Sedaris  There is nothing quite like David Sedaris recounting stories of family, the nuances of life and relationships, mortality, and well… the beach.  I laugh so loud in public I surely look crazy and it’s worth it.

•  Another audiobook:  Braving the Winderness by Brene Brown.  A vulnerable, honest, resounding pep-talk just when we need it, read by the author which really makes me feel like I can tackle life and self uncertainties.  Raise your hand if you’ve all but memorized her Ted Talk.  I’m raising my hand / (I be you are too).

•  And one more audiobook: I’ll Be Gone In The Dark by Michelle McNamara and listen… you’ll never sleep again but that’s fine right?

•  A song:  Amos Lee has a new album coming out and there’s a preview song that’s beautiful out here.

•  And I’ve made another Spotify playlist for summer thriving.  It’ll grow but here’s where it’s at now.

More soon!  Bye-bye for now!

xo Joy

I have been listening to Bossed Up – a podcast about being a woman and being a leader, it’s really interesting and relevant. Thank you for the suggestions above!

I started listening to Ologies based on your recommendation and was THRILLED when she name dropped you in the linguistics episode for your Drake on Cake stuff. Thanks for the other recommendations – I need more uplifting stuff in my queue, not just the serious (which I love but burns ya out, ya kno?).

Epilogue to the above comment: I just started listening to In The Thick, which is POC journalists discussing the news. It is excellent.

I’ve been exclusively listening to My Dad Wrote a Porno and trying not to burst out laughing in the middle of the street. Other than that I’ve been listening to Criminology, the first season about the Zodiac killer is so interesting. Tales is the ‘true’ stories behind fairytales, it’s such a good listen, really sucks you in. The Grave Talks is all about haunted places around the world. My absolute favourite podcast is The Parapod, two comedians, one a believer one a skeptic. The believer has to convince the skeptic about the existence of ghosts, monsters and conspiracy theories and it is just hilarious. I absolutely love it!

Terrible, Thanks for Asking is one of my faves. I love Nora McInerny. She’s funny (in a kind way) when talking about devastating things and she’s just so compassionate and real. And TTFA reminds me with each episode that grace for others is essential (because you never really know what other people are going through). Revisionist History might be my all time favorite though. Malcolm Gladwell’s VOICE! And his insightful and interesting take on everything. Generous Orthodoxy and Miss Buchanan’s Period of Adjustment are two of my favorite episodes (both from season 1). The Good Life Project, On Being with Krista Tippett, Order 9066, Invisibilia, This American Life, and In the Dark (season 2! OMG) round out the podcasts I try to listen to regularly right now.

You turned me to My favorite Murder (SSDGM) and now I trust you in all podcast related things. I’ll definitely check out Ologies! I am also loving Caliphate and plowed through The Habitat. Have you listened to Why We Eat What We Eat (from Gimlet) yet? Or Sandra with Kristen Wiig?

Where Should We Begin? is FANTASTIC. Esther Perel is brilliant, and the conversations the couples have are so deep and uncover so, SO many incredible revelations about their experiences and situations.

I *HIGHLY* recommend Friendshipping! It’s a podcast that answers listener questions about friendship and how to deal with all of its complexities.

For some straight-up JOY and happiness, give Wonderful! It’s hosted by married couple Griffin & Rachel McElroy, who spend about an hour every week talking about things that make them happy! Examples include Rachel’s poetry corner, movies from the 90s, TV for babies, the ability of wombats to kill predators with their BUTTS, and so, so much more. In addition, people love to make animated videos of some of their segments that get posted up on Youtube, which often make the segments even funnier!

I love the Forever35 podcast which comes out weekly. Dorie and Kate talk about habits and rituals we do as self-care. They talk about beauty, beauty products, hobbies, shopping, clothing, food and meal-prepping, music, TV, etc. There is also a Forever35 Facebook group, and Instagram page. Enjoy!

I recently read Calypso in the airport on my way home from vacation and I’m sure I was quite the sight. Hysterically laughing with crazy hair and bags under my eyes from being on a plane for 8 hours. He’s by far my favorite writer! My 11th grade English teacher introduced him to me.

I love Reply All, Pop Culture Happy Hour, Hidden Brain, and Family Ghosts. God’s Wolf by Jeffrey Lee is an excellent audiobook about 12th century Crusades, a knight named Reynard and how saying his name aloud is blasphemous to present day Al-Queda and Isis. Non fiction but spell binding.

Forever35! So enjoyable, and a lovely variety of guests. (if you’re not familiar, it’s about skincare, except it’s about so much more than that).

I have recently listened to a few podcasts… been on a bit of a Golden State Killer trend with Casefile series + update and I’ll Be Gone in the Dark podcast about the making of the book. And I just started Killer John from the LA Times which has me hooked just after the first episode. Thanks for all of the suggestions!
