Hello my friends.
We’ve made it out of January – let’s stop and take that in. Well done. Let’s keep hydrating. Let’s keep moisturizing. Let’s keep it moving.
I’m feeling, well, behind on my Mardi Gras costume making but very well up to speed on my King Cake consumption. There has been no shortage. I had a King Cake doughnut just today thankyouverymuch. I have a houseguest in town and it’s always fun to take extra long walks and take in the city.
I spent the earlier part of the week in New York and left the city just before the cold cold cold. I hope all of you in the chill are staying warm and well and have a Roasted Vegetable Winter Crumble in the oven.
The offering this week is below. You’re good at this by now but – take what you need and leave the rest. I am thankful for your presence.
• A case made by a mild-mannered dermatologist: Is Sunscreen the New Margarine? (Outside)
• Ok is breakfast a conspiracy? Brunch definitely isn’t – that’s just facts. (Vox)
• An important question to consider most sincerely: Do Things Matter? Yes, of course they do. Also, nope. They don’t. (Popula via Ann Friedman)
• This week I Googled the following phrase: how to be a 911 operator. I read this: What I Do As A 911 Dispatcher. I was probably avoiding putting my laundry away. (Lifehacker)
• Oprah and Gayle on dating, phone passcodes and spicing it up in the bedroom– thank you very much ladies. There’s something about best friends that is such a joy, you know? (Oprah)
• Here’s what we’re listening to this week: Emily King, Scenery. (Spotify)
• My current cake obsession: Raspberry Rose Angel Food Cake. (Zoe Bakes)
• I just remembered that a lifetime ago I made these doughnuts and I’m here to tell you that I’m getting back in the kitchen to revamp this recipe for all of us: Pink Raised Doughnuts With Toasted Coconut. (Joy the Baker)
• I’m learning so much from you in the Well-Kept Kitchen Challenge we’re all doing on Instagram (see the highlights for the past two days)! This book has been recommended to us and without actually having my hands on it yet, it seems GREAT! The Hands-On Home: a seasonal guide to cooking, preserving and natural housekeeping. (Amazon)
• I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, please please read The Dreamers by Karen Thompson Walker. Thank you. (Amazon)
Have a most lovely Sunday!
My love to you.

I totally fell down a rabbit hole with that career spotlight! Thank you!

The Hands on Home is one of just a few books that lives on my kitchen counter. I love that book so much.

When I lived down there my landlord would get this King Cake from….I’m not sure where- maybe someplace closer to Baton Rouge? Anyway, it was like, a Krispy Kreme in texture- and so much better than any other King Cake I’d ever eaten. I wish I knew where it was from, but the key part of this monologue is that she would put it on a table outside of my apartment for all the tenants to enjoy, and I’m pretty sure I enjoyed more bites of that cake each year than anyone else in my building. Happy Kitchen cleaning!

Without sunscreen I get a rash from the sun, so it’s not optional for me!
joythebaker
I feel like it’s still very important to wear so I hear you and I’m sorry about the rash. The sun is no joke.

Just wanted to let you know that reading “Let it be Sunday” is my one self-care action I do every week. Thank you for it!

I just ordered the “Hands on Kitchen” and am looking forward to using it a lot this spring to get (again) organized. Thanks for the tip

How in the world have I never ever considered a vegetable crumble before? Serious facepalm to myself. Has never even crossed my mind as a possible thing but of course it is and of course it makes all the sense in the world. Going grocery shopping now to rectify this grave misstep. Thank you
joythebaker
I hope you enjoy it!

I took your advice and read The Dreamers…thank you for the recommendation! It was an awesome novel!
joythebaker
I’m so glad you enjoyed it!

YES! Came here to also say that the Outside sunscreen article is full of misinformation.

I’m an incredibly fortunate older woman who, thirty years ago, was told by five doctors I had less than a year when I was diagnosed with Stage IV Melanoma. I researched, spending about a month visiting a university medical library. I have a lot of Irish in me, and the highest rates of melanoma in the world are Australia and New Zealand, both countries with lots of Irish descendants, living in semi-tropical (aka lots of sun) countries. Ireland has the highest rates of melanoma in Europe. I participated in early trials of immunotherapy, going to Duke once a month for seven months. There were twelve in my group the first month. By the seventh, there were four of us. I consider my life well lived due to that participation. If I do nothing else in life, I helped further cancer treatment. I go to a dermatologist only ever six months now. I’ve had a fair amount of basal cell on my face and chest from sun exposure; in fact, just this week I had five spots frozen off. I have a well-done scar down the center of my nose from having aggressive basal cell cut out of it. One friend almost lost an eye to the same. Maybe if one has Norwegian or Swedish (though I have some of that too) heritage, it’s not as likely as those with Irish in them. That article is ignoring lots of facts. I will also say, when you hear a doctor(s) give you less than a year, it doesn’t matter how rare it may be for most. Do your own research before relying on one article. I always catch up on your links even if I miss other entries here – you find the best writings, with great info. That link I gotta question.

That veggie crumble looks awesome.

I see the well kept kitchen challenge has advantages in many respects!
