Friends hello!
I’ve been traveling for the past week and I can’t be too sure about what day it is. I’m sure that it’s not Sunday and for that I apologize. I’ll share my travels soon, but please take in this picture of baklava and the offering of links below.
It’s officially June which means it’s time to work on the Summer Bucket List and I’m finding inspiration from years past: Summer Bucket List, 2018.
I hope this finds you easing into the week. Use these links as procrastination as you need:
• This week in New Orleans we lost legend Leah Chase. She was a gift to all of us, so generous, such a force. This tribute brought tears to my eyes: Leah Chase, Creole Chef Who Fed Presidents and Freedom Riders, Dies at 96. I appreciate these words from Dr Jessica B Harris, “She is of a generation of African-American women who set their faces against the wind without looking back.” (New York Times)
• This week’s long-read comes along with a sexual assault trigger warning but the fortitude and bravery is truly something. “After Stephanie Montgomery says she was raped at the strip club where she worked, she went to the manager and the police. Nothing happened. That’s when she decided to tell her story as big as she could.” The Billboard. (California Sunday Magazine)
• It is truly a wild world and I don’t really even know where to dig in on this one: How Many Bones Would You Break to Get Laid. (The Cut)
• Hi, this is a snapshot of America. It’s not great, ok? The New Secession. (The Atlantic)
• An important word on ‘superfoods’: they’re superfluous, at best. Just eat good stuff, mostly, if you can. (Medium)
• The two words that killed me at my school spelling bee? ‘Banana’ (this was before the Gwen Stefani song) and ‘avenue’. I’m obviously not a natural competitive speller. This eight way tie boggle my mind: How Eight Middle Schoolers Toppled the Scripps Spelling Bee. (The Atlantic)
• Get em: He’s A Professional Dancer, But His Stage Is the E Train. (New York Times Magazine)
• Mad respect: Mindy Kaling in Full Bloom. (Vanity Fair)
• One of my very favorite things to eat – please don’t sleep on this: Fried Pistachios in Lemon Yogurt. (Joy the Baker)
• I’m putting this on the summer reading list: The River: A Novel by Peter Heller. (Amazon)
• I’m going to make a version of this Baharat Roasted Chicken sometime this week. A slow cooked, throw it all in a pot version. (Leite’s Culinaria)
Have a wonderful day, ok?
My love to you!

Thank you for the super foods bit! I don’t eat any exotic foods. They are expensive and often processed and I try to stick to whole foods. I also am just naturally skeptical. I appreciate this article’s validation of the super simple concept: eat real food, mostly plants. Love me some lentils and spinach ?

Wow — the article about Stephanie who painted that billboard. Wow. Thanks for sharing.

Looks like some interesting reading posts that I plan to get to later this week. (And make that chicken too) Today is a busy one! I have class tonight (getting certified in cybersecurity) AND it’s official that we will be moving to CA this summer. It’s unfortunate that my home state will ever become anything more than a dumping ground for crazy right-wingers, despite so many good people putting up a good fight.
I received your cookbook in the mail “100 Simple and Comforting Recipes” and like the rest of your stuff, I’m looking forward to cooking my way through it!
Joy and posters, have a great week.

Good on you for moving to CA when all we hear about is people moving away from California. I too hope to move out to California within the next year or so after I get some money saved up and my career a dash settled. I grew up in LA and have been longing to move back to the state since. Although I won’t be able to afford LA, I’m thinking Carmel Valley or something along that line… out in the wild, if you will, self-sustaining if need be. Best of luck to you!!!
