Hello friends!
I hope today finds you slow and warm, feeling like you have more than you need. Luxury, right?
I’ve spent the week in the great state of Maine exploring Portland, Bethel, and Mt Desert Island. I’ve eaten so many of the best, most reasonably priced oysters. I’ve lazed around bookstores and hiked through forests and generally had a really lovely time during one of the busiest times of my year. Proof positive that everything will eventually get done and life is for the living (and not the always working).
I’ve fallen gleefully behind on my daily news podcast and couldn’t much tell you what’s happening in Washington, but I will tell you… WOW these Maine leaves are wild!
The offering this week is below. It’s a bit of a vacation edition. Thank you for being with me in it:
• Rep Elijah Cummings rose from segregated childhood to powerful political voice in Baltimore, Washington. (The Baltimore Sun)
• This is a really wonderful read on immigrant food Made In America (Voraciously, The Washington Post)
• All week long I’ve been fortunate enough to explore Acadia National Park and I hope you get to put your eyes on it too. (NPS)
• I don’t have a passion for sports leagues but the human stories always make me stop and feel: The Unbreakable Bond. (ESPN)
• Bresha Meadows Thought You’d Understand. (HuffPost)
• Ok sooooo, am I ready to start a summer camp for adults? (Mel Magazine)
• The song I’m listening to this week: Michael Kiwanuka’s Piano Joint. (Spotify)
• Here’s what I’m making for dinner this week: Chicken Meatball Tikka Masala. (The Candid Appetite)
• Let Brittany Howard take you away for a few in this Tiny Desk Concert. (NPR)
• Stop everything! Thrifty is finally selling their cylindrical ice cream scoops. If you grew up in Los Angeles his is vvvvv big news. (LA Mag)
• Goes to Maine once, lives in this jacket forever. (Nordstrom Rack)
I hope this Sunday is a good one for you.
My love to you.

Great reads!

Joy, thank you for the Bresha Meadows story. I hadn’t heard it, and Bresha deserves for us all to know her story. Sending her so much love, that the rest of her life may make up for the brutality of her childhood. She deserves real joy.

Hi Joy! Thanks for this weekly Sunday post. It really helps me get through my week as I work my way down the list! I just finished a book of essays that I think you would enjoy called “Burn It Down: Women Writing About Anger” edited by Lilly Dancyger. It’s short enough that it only took me a day to read it, and in the end I just wanted it to keep going. I highly recommend adding it to your list of reading material!
Thanks again for your wonderful content. Your recipes are always off the charts amazing.

I know that jacket looks warm and cozy but when washed the polyester releases microplastics that harm ocean life.

This PBS series on food made y immigrant communities around the US was excellent. It;s hosted by Chef Marcus Samuelsson. You’ll enjoy it if you haven’t seen it.

Ha! I loved going to Thrifty for an ice cream as a kid. Years ago I put this scoop on my Christmas list for just that reason – https://www.amazon.com/CuisiPro-Scoop-and-Stack-White/dp/B00C796WV8/ref=sr_1_4?crid=J523CT9EE7MO&keywords=cylinder+ice+cream+scoop&qid=1571669049&sprefix=cylinder+ice+cream%2Caps%2C190&sr=8-4 My husband thought I was nuts but it’s a nice childhood memory!

I understand you very well!

Never heard Brittany Howard before but her cd is now on my library request list. Thanks!
joythebaker
She sings in Alabama Shakes and I’m glad she’s on your radar now!

I am oddly excited about the Thrifty Ice Cream Scoop! I was just at Rite Aid today. They should have sold that scoop a long time ago. I bet it’s easier to simply push down than to roll the ice cream. I remember when Thrifty Ice Cream was a dime a scoop! Now I take my kids there after school.

YOU WERE IN MAINE???? Of course I was working at the high school on Mt. Desert while you were there. . . . but I hope my place made you welcome!

Ah, Thrifty’s Drug Stores. I grew up in the Bay Area in the 60’s and 70’s and went to the one in San Leandro, which was right by Mom’s favorite grocery store for heavy duty shopping. It was always a treat to go next door to Thrifty’s and get a cylindrical scoop of cherry vanilla ice cream. Thanks for bringing back the memory!

did you stop by Standard Bakery in Portland? Yum!
joythebaker
