Hello sweet friends. Let me be the first to welcome you to a fine Monday!
We’ve been super stormy down here with, in what was absolute NEWS TO ME, a tropical storm. I truly don’t know how I didn’t know but maybe it has something to do with not having actual television channels and not paying attention to the weather this week beyond the weather app on my phone. When it felt like the wind outside was going to lift my car off the ground… that’s when I started to pay attention. Mmmkay. Lesson re-learned, thank you as always, New Orleans.
This week at The Bakehouse (my little home studio – if I haven’t defined it in a while) we made homemade satsuma jam homemade doughnuts. It was a labor of love and I nearly set my stove ablaze spilling hot oil on an open flame but turns out – I’m ok. When people say they’re afraid to fry… I get it.
I hope you’re well this week. What’s on your mind?
The offering this week is below. As always, take what you need and leave the rest with me.
• Roxanne Gay has a way of distilling the important truths. I’ve changed my mind about the carry-on bag: The Case for Checking a Bag (Gay Medium)
• I found this very compelling. ” Are we hesitant to bring new life into the world because we are more morally upright than previous generations, or because we are more selfish?” On Choosing Life (On Point)
• Talk to us! The Real Queen of Wellness (The New York Times)
• Very fair question. Why do people hate vegans? (The Guardian)
• It’s fascinating how binary our big brains can be. How steak became manly and salad became feminine (The Conversation)
• What if you call 911 and no one comes? I suppose what happens on all of the true crime podcasts I listen to? (NBC)
• Interested: What Does It Mean to be “Cali-Sober”? (The Cut)
• Ok ok ok so I’ve been doing it wrong. It Isn’t About Your Love Language; It’s About Your Partner’s. (The Atlantic)
• I’m loving this series from The Kitchn: The Kitchn Cooking School: What Pro Cooks Know About Salt and Flavor. (The Kitchn)
• I’m always ready: Cajun Fried Chicken (Leite’s Culinaria)
• What are you baking this weekend? Me: Jam Doughnuts with Jamboree Jam (see above). (Joy the Baker, Jamboree)
• I started a new true crime podcast this week. Redhanded: two British ladies, a bit of wit, a welcome scrutiny, and a ton of true crime stories I’ve never heard before. (Stitcher)
• My friend Sarah Becker is an avid reader and highly recommended these three books to me. Two are spooky (for the season) and one is a great kitchen-related read:
Kitchens of the Great Midwest by J Ryan Stradal
Verity by Colleen Hoover
The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides (Amazon)
• Spoiler alert: this is the best link in the entire newsletter an I left it all the way down here for you because I want you to take time with it. The 20 defining comedy sketches of the last 20 years. (The Washington Post)
Enjoy today! My love to you – bigtime!

I love Redhanded! I saw them in glasgow, scotland a couple months ago and ended up going for a drink with the ladies after the show. Lovely girls :)

His newest book, The Lager Queen of Minnesota is wonderful too!
If you ever get to see him read from his books in person, do it! He’s a delight.
