Good morning, friends! Itโs that time of year when I start making ambitious plans (lol who am I kidding – there’s no time of year when I’m not trying to do the absolute most). I’ve been in the bighouse in Bellville for nearly a year (can you believe!?) and it’s feeling time for aย spring cleaning, gardening to beat back the weeds, and maaaybe even pulling out the spring dresses over winter sweatpants. The sun is out, the pollen count is up, and weโre all feeling just unhinged enough to believe we can grow my own tomatoes, and finally clean out the back of the truck.
To celebrate this season of fresh starts, hereโs what’s on the Springtime Bucket List:
- Keep fresh flowers on the table at all timesย even if it’s just clippings from the magnolia tree.
- Drink more waterย because it’s iced coffee season so, balance!ย
- Wake up early and go for a morning walk because the sunrises are sherbet colored!
- Wear something other than leggings or maybe leggings but with a dress over them!
- Start a garden and keep it alive even though the basil plant I just put in the grown is already thinking of wilting on me.
Enjoy the links, enjoy your Sunday, and may we can all find the motivation to at least consider vacuuming the couch.ย Consider.ย
โขย There are two pieces you simply must read this week.ย The first is an essay on aging and yearning by Stephanie Gangi.ย Ten Years After (Substack)
โขย The second is, “How do we want to live the last third of our lives?” ย On Getting Old by Kim Foster (Substack)
โขย I am minutes away from making this viral Hillstone Sauvy B Martini from here on out. (Instagram)

โขย I have had several Pyne and Smith Clothiers dresses for years and I LIVE in these fine linens during the summer especially.ย A uniform? These dresses are IT! This is my favorite right now.ย (Pyne and Smith Clothiers)
โขย Have you caught the spring cleaning bug yet? I feel like it’s in the air, though I’m set on spending this weekend getting the garden together with my sister Launa.ย This Spring Cleaning Calendar breaks down tasks into “instant joys” “easy wins” and projects that require us to “dig in” and, YES – that’s some organized, manageable work. โขย Most times I just need to have a pot of beans holding steady for me in the fridge.ย Rancho Gordo Pinto Beans are my very very favorite. They’re so incredibly creamy and truly, the best $6.25 I can spend. (Rancho Gordo)
โขย I hate to say it but this slightly expensive Peter Thomas Roth Pumpkin Enzyme Mask is actually fantastic for a quick brightening of my face and decolatage. The enzymes provide a little tingle and there are little scrubby bits in the mask, too.ย AND the jar is a generous size and I use the mask sparingly so it’ll last forever. (Amazon)
โขย I’d like to make a tart for no reason other than to have one resting on the counter on a whim and Classic Lemon Curd Tart (maybe with poppy seeds in the crust?) is just the thing! (Smitten Kitchen)
โขย I’ve discovered that I’m too old to wear cheap t-shirts and nothing hits like a Boden jersey button-down. (Boden)
โข If, at any point in your life, you’ve taken on the show Grey’s Anatomy as your personality (see my early 2000’s self raising my hand), I would highly encourage you to get into the nuts and bolts of this Call Her Daddy episode with Ellen Pompeo.ย I just love her.ย Am I going back to watch Gray’s from the beginning? Absolutely, yes I am.ย (YouTube)
Enjoy this day, friends!

I’ve been away and I’m playing catchup on your posts. I loved the list of perfect things. Wow, did I need that! I’m looking forward to digging into these links. As an older person, the two posts on aging are a draw.
Here in New England we are quite a bit behind you with spring, but there is a hint of it in the air and the sun. I just came inside from some garden cleanup. It’s always a lift to think about the garden. Your basil plant looks wonderful. I hope that it perked up!
I read “big house” and had a little fit of the giggles. Big as in large, not prison. Thanks for the Sunday morning (almost afternoon) smile.
I love Julia Turshen’s recipe for salmon patties. It uses sour cream and onion chips in place of breadcrumbs!
Yesssss I’ve made these salmon patties and I love the addition of sour cream and onion chips. The only problem for me is the bag of chips leftover in my house. I end up finishing the bag in a day. Hahah.
Especially as an older mom, Kim Foster’s On Getting Old piece hit hard. Also congrats on your next chapter in the Belleville bighouse! I brought my now-husband to your New Orlean’s Bakehouse for a biscuit workshop when we were newly dating, maybe in 2018. It’s a formative memory for our relationship. Now we’re raising a toddler in NYC. So happy to keep following along with your writing and journey, Joy!
That’s the part of Kim’s essay that struck me too, Jen! And what I’m also hearing is that we’re old friends! I guarantee I have a picture of you and your now-husband on my phone from our biscuit class. I love how to the world works! So happy for you!
Fun watching your new house/life take shape! While you’re doing your planting maybe put a fig tree out there somewhere. They do pretty well here in central Texas and I’d love to see some fig recipes! Casting my vote for cheesecake for Easter. Maybe a burnt Basque cheesecake? it has been on my list to try.
Yes Kathy! I actually do have a little fig tree in the ground! It survived the freeze this past winter and it’s looking ready to GO this spring and summer!
Rancho Gordo, the only beans in this house; we just finished a pot of the pintos yesterday!
You know what’s good!!
