Just a Quick Pause

Friends, hello!

I’m taking a little pause this Sunday. I need a moment to gather my thoughts, catch my breath, and dry out a bit from a very soggy week here in Texas.ย  I’m currently sitting at the kitchen table with a crisp Diet Coke hoping it inspires even just a hint of ambition towards the last of the week’s to do list.

Iโ€™m also deep in the weeds writing two very different essaysโ€”one about motorcycle riding, the other about fertility. Somehow they both feel equally vulnerable.ย  We’ll see how those shake out and if either are good enough to reach the light of day (aka the Substack).ย  In the kitchen I’ve added this pot of Tomato Ginger Chicken and Rice Soup made with cherry tomatoes from my friend Bethโ€™s garden to the rotation. It’s certainly not “soup season” but if you live in a place where it storms in the summer, this soup is light and brothy enough to call a summer soup.ย  Iโ€™m also tinkering with a strawberry icebox cake (coming soon), dreaming of a strawberry Texas Sheet Cake, and baking something sweet for an old-fashioned cake walk.

Happy Fatherโ€™s Day to yours. I lucked out with one of the best, and feel especially lucky for a dad who still shows up for me in all the ways that matter – which currently means testing a new cookie recipe I’m working on because I need his opinion on the texture.

More soon. Thanks for letting me step back for just a beat.ย  May your Diet Coke hit just right.

With love,
Joy

  1. Joy, your words feel like a warm summer breezeโ€”quiet, thoughtful, and full of heart. The balance between vulnerability and comfort (especially with that Tomato Ginger Chicken Soup!) is beautiful. Looking forward to both essays and that strawberry sheet cake!

  2. Much love, Joy. I know nothing about motorcycles but have my own journey with motherhood that began with horrible loss. Thank you for sharing whatever you feel comfortable with sharing.
