Hello friends!
I’m back home in New Orleans from Dublin where it is still somehow 90 degrees with no signs of it being anything less. Dublin was such a lovely, albeit too short a time. Everyone is so kind, the hills are so green, the sheep are so round, and the croissants at Bread41 are truly remarkable.
I’m going to use this Sunday to spend some time in my garden and in the kitchen. As much as I’ve been up in the air this year, those two spaces help me feel like I have my feet on the ground.
This offering this week is simple. Take what you need and leave the rest. Next week we’ll talk about salt in baking and other useful things, ok? I just need a day or so to let my brain catch up to my body. My brain might still be in an Irish pub.

โข I listened to this entire Dateline podcast in one day and WOW friends what a wild ride: The Thing About Pam. (Stitcher)
โข Here a few thoughts and a little interview I did with my friends at Smoke Artisan Perfume Company. (Smoke Perfume)

Glad to know I wasn’t the only one losing my mind over those cinnamon scones. They were so dreamy!
Lovely!
I read that article about milk on CNN. I was like, WHAAA?! Milk hydrates better than water. Brain exploded. I love dairy so yay for me!
Hi Joy! I love reading your Sunday posts during my downtime at work. They fill my day with a little more meaning and fulfill my sense of curiosity towards the world, human nature, and food (of course!) While they aren’t always the most uplifting pieces, I find that they always ignite some sort of reaction in me, and they remind me that there is still a lot of good left to be done. Sharing stories that move you helps me to move myself, too :)
I saw this article from The New Yorker that I thought you would feel compelled to share as well: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/10/07/what-if-your-abusive-husband-is-a-cop
Have a great week! See you next Sunday.
Catherine
Am I crazy or did I see a List of the Best 100 Movies on Netflix on Let It Be yesterday?
Hi Joy, I’ve tried twice now to subscribe to the baking newsletter, and I’m not getting the weekly updates! This makes me soooo sad that I’m missing out. Any suggestions?
I just listen to The Thing About Pam. Wow, what a thrilling crime story.
Joy — I just wanted to stop in to say that I love your Sunday posts — I read them first thing at work on Monday mornings to get ready for my day. I’m here for the politics, the food, the style, all of it. You’re doing a great job and I’m thankful for the effort you put in to these every week.
Just wanted to counter act some of the negativity Iโm reading in some of these posts. Keep doing you – all of it. I like my thoughts challenged and I like seeing the variety of things that youโve curated for the week (in addition to baked goods of course).
I look forward to this post every week! Also really enjoying the Washington post news letter…I baked the cookies and they were truly the best Iโve ever baked! Perfectly chewy. Going to invest in a bundt pan this week for a pound cake baking adventure!
The SK cinnamon scones are divine. A must make for anyone who loves cinnamon. Total yum
I really love your selections of thoughtful, informative journalism every Sunday… I look forward to it every weekend. But I really hate true crime sensationalism, and Dateline is some of the worst out there. I thought true crime had its cultural moment (my favorite murder, etc.) and was fading away… too bad.
I have followed you for years & enjoyed your recipes. But time to unsubscribe. Keep politics out of your blog & stick to how to make delicious food!
Joy has always been a voice for decency, and continues to be, I hope she never stops.
I’m following that bakery on instagram now and adding Dublin on the list of my next trip, maybe a long one to eat everything possible :D
Thank you for sharing the link about the family in San Francisco. This is my life with my son. I want to hold them, and have them hold me.
Oh gosh. Tinder is just the worst. I just finished reading a book called “All the Single Ladies” that I think you would enjoy! It seems to validate my life choices of being 38 and single, like yourself, and somehow tells me it’s okay to not be swiping and the like. And we got to be 38 and single thanks in part to the strong women that came before us. Happy Sunday!
Ah thank you for the suggestion, Chrissy! I’m strong and steady in my 38 and single status!
Will you share the GF version of the pumpkin bread? I would appreciate it!
I SECOND THIS.
same!! my 7 yo just had to switch to gluten free and she is crushed (girl loves her carbs :p). Would love to make some yummy fall treats for her!!
The dairy industry is pushing anyone it can to promote dairy (it’s struggling). It’s terribly unsustainable, unnatural (and unhealthy), and abusive to mother cows and their babies who suffer for our weird obsession with cow milk/cheese. Please don’t perpetuate this industry by linking to random click bait articles that don’t take the whole impact into consideration.
Thanks for your thoughts, Eve.

There is no subscription fee to sign up for the free Voraciously newsletter. Yes I do link to some reputable news outlets that may require a subscription but usually allow for a handful of free reads. I do believe in paying a small fee for reliable news. Also, you can take note of the source of the article before clicking.
Oh, I see you really enjoyed Dublin!
