Can I share something with you?
Iโve been feeling a little lost lately.
I think this whole new blog has left me feeling turned around and upside down.
Let me explain. I want to take you back to the humble beginnings of Joy the Baker.
See that picture up top? Thatโs my first site. Oooh me Oooh my. Pretty precious, right? I set this site up two years ago so I could start selling wedding cakes and wholesale baked yummies to coffee shops. I played the wholesale and wedding cake game for a hot minute. I chugged along on my own for a few months before it became clear that food costs and kitchen expenses made it hard for me to even break even. Thatโs when I started working in other bakeries and restaurants. Phew. That was relief.
Then a magical thing happened. It really did feel like magic. I discovered food blogs. Itโs like fireworks went off in my headโฆ as silly as that sounds. Stories plus pictures plus recipesโฆ plus you just get to be yourself at every moment!? Holy heck! In! I wanted in!
Here are some of my very first food photos, taken when I was working as the Head Baker at a tiny bakery in Burbank. These shots? Taken on my camera phone at 4:30 in the morning. You think Iโm kidding. Iโm totally not kidding. Thatโs some good glisten on those cinnamon rolls, right? Thank you camera phone macro mode!
Want to see my first post? Ha! I know itโs around here somewhere. Here!
Above is one of the first pictures I took with a fancy camera, a Canon 40D. I propped an Ikea lamp up in the backgroundโฆ thatโs what is creating that yellowish glow. Not exactly ideal, I now know.
Can I just sayโฆ I was beyond mortified when I discovered that someone had found my blog and left a lovely comment in the days that followed my first post.
Mortified.
The thought of someone finding this space and reading my words absolutely terrified me.
But it didnโt terrify me enough to actually stop posting, and posting, and postingโฆ and postingโฆ and posting some more.
So here I amโฆ almost two years later, still working a day job, cooking, blogging, throwing picnics for hundreds of people like you, and introducing a whole new look with loads of new content into my space.
Can I be honest? Thatโs what we do here, right?
This whole redesign is a big, scary thing for me. Many, many months ago I thought I might like to start a separate blogโฆ one about my silly life and all the silly things I do. I then thoughtโฆ โHey! Why not put my food and my life all together into one big olโ fun site!?โ.
Here we are many months later, Iโve hired designers and fired designers. Iโve begged coders to meet deadlines and battled hosting companies to get where I am today. It feels like Iโve built a house, then set it on fireโฆ then had it built all over againโฆ but, reallyโฆ less dramatic than that and without the fire.
Iโve gone from taking pictures with my camera phone to running an entire site and keeping up with designers and coders and hosting and CSS and CPM and IE6 compatibility andโฆ DUDE! This mess is complicated!!! Bourbon. Where is the Bourbon? Also doughnuts. I need doughnuts!
Am I whining? Iโm totally pouting right now, arenโt I?
Itโs just that sometimes things become far more than you expectedโฆ even when youโre trying to expect them.
Iโm telling you all thisโฆ Iโm showing you where Iโve come from and showing you how weโre right at the beginning of where weโre going, because I have an unreasonable desire to share with you the overwhelming, scary and totally exciting nature of this endeavour. Oooh Internet, how you fussy up my emotions sometimes.
So weโre in this together right? I couldnโt have nearly as much fun with this space if you werenโt here to share it with me.
Thanks for being here for as long as you haveโฆ even if itโs only for the past two minutes. Thanks for adjusting to all this change Iโve thrown at you.
Thanks for being patient as I get my footing here, yell at my hosting company, recharge the batteries on my cameraโฆ. and do some freakinโ dishes.
And hey! Let me know whatโs working for you hereโฆ and what makes you sorta wanna yell and scream (in a bad way). You matter. Iโm listening, unless it has anything to do with my use of the โโฆโ, then Iโm not really listening. Holla back.

Sometimes I wonder how itโs possible for people who look like theyโve โgot it allโ to be so down. Then you realize people think the same thing about you. I closed down my pathetic little blog, it was taking up too much time, with hardly any feedback, and the site templates were crappy.
So I see people like you, people whoโve โgo it all!โ Silly, nobody really does. Itโs nice to see a humble perspective, even the best stars go shooting off sometimes or dim down a little. Just for a while! Nobodyโs perfect. And Iโm rambling. See? Not perfect. Anyway, I just wanted to say that your real-life, down-to-earth (lots of hyphens going on here!) posts are one of the best cures for my petty teen angst, donโt stop :)
Joy,
I stumbled upon this post after searching for โcoffee cakeโ on your site. I just started a food blog and Iโve never worked in a bakery or professional food setting, but boy, am I learningโฆand itโs all driven by my sweet tooth. But the point of this is that, itโs nice to see how you started and how humble you are. I absolutely LOVE your blog, itโs my go-to and I recommend it to all. Thank you for being all that you are :)
I enjoyed looking at your site. I like to bake more than cook. My husband does most of the cooking, but Iโm getting inspired to cook more after looking at foodie blogs. I like that you can see the process and it makes for a good read too. Iโm currently battling colon cancer and find that baking can be great therapy for me. Iโll put your site in my favorites and look forward to visiting it again and trying some of your recipes. Thanks Joy the Baker.
JoyโฆI donโt blog. I donโt have a blog and I never read blogsโฆexcept yours!!! It started out with โhappening uponโ your Crannberry Banana Bread โ I found the recipe and that was that! Months later, I was wanting to bake something new and yummy, and I decided to get on the internet to look around. As I was searching endless recipe sites, unsure if I could trust the ratings (yes, Iโve made the recipes with the 5 stars from 10,000 people, and some have been awful!!), and I thought about that simple bread recipe! The recipe that I loved, and so did everyone else. The recipe that one woman shared, and I felt I could trust her opinion and taste. Luckily, I kept the recipe on my โFavoritesโ list, and it led me to your blog once again. Only this time, I stayed onโฆI explored! I read, and kept looking around, and loved what I saw! I donโt like the computer muchโฆbut almost daily, I am drawn to your site! I canโt wait to try soooo many recipes, and I love reading your whimsical tales of how you found the recipe, or invented the recipe, or whatever! So, with all that said, do what you will, keep up the amazing recipes, share with us as you willโฆbut I know you have tons of us who will stick with you, whatever you choose to do!
Joy, you are a breath of fresh air! Love your new design, so bright and happy (we need alot of this donโt we?). Iโm getting use to it but love it more now that you have the latest back on top again.
I follow you as often as I can and only wish I were a fly on the wall in your kitchen while you create all the goodies you share with us. Missed being able to come to your picnic but loved the coverage you gave it.
Keep up the great work and know it is not in vain!!!!!
xox
Thank you so much Joy for this post! That is exactly where I am right now. We ARE right at the beginning of where we are going! I love your posts, your recipes and your divine inspiration! I wish I was in LA to gobble up your goodies, alas I have to recreate them in Atlanta. Iโm glad you continue each morning with such love, passion and dedication. I look forward to your future and AFFIRM your success!
I must say, I miss the search bar; I used to make crazy use of that thing, when I was sure you must have some wonderful recipe for what I wanted, I just couldnโt remember what post it was in, or what it was called.
Hi.
I did put a box at the very top called โFindโ. A few people have had trouble seeing it. Maybe in need to place it somewhere else.
Thanks!
Hi Joy,
This new layout is beyond beautiful. So fresh and pretty! So professional! And your writing is as whimsical and welcoming as always. Iโve recommended your blog to many friends.
I can only imagine the expense of something like this. Iโm not the least bit techie so I really have no idea what that would be. That said, the adsโฆoh Joy, the ads. Theyโre jarring and, for me, ruin the aesthetic. I dread posting a negative comment (I scanned the comments and no one else appeared to mention them so I imagine Iโll be viewed as a villian. I did want to email you privately but couldnโt find an email address.) and I apologize for saying anything less than positive. But you wanted feedback and I assume you want honest feedback. It just seems a shame to create something so lovely and then have to look at someoneโs yellow teeth.
Again, I apologize if this is more honesty than you wanted. Truly, youโve done a tremendous job. If someone doesnโt offer you a book contract theyโre simply crazy.
HI
No need to apologize! I really do appreciate the feedback.
I am still working on getting the Ad situation sorted out. I saw the ugly tooth ad as well and I was mortified. I have asked my Ad company to exclude it from the rotation, if possible. Yuck! I hope itโs gone soon.
Thanks for letting me know. Really.
I love your blog and your writing. Keep on posting!
Joy, your new site is so poppin` wonderful, I almost want to give you flowers.
I`m a farmer growing flowers up in Norcal and I look forward to reading your quirky posts after a grueling day in the greenhouse. Your posts give me great joy and something to be excited about.
I can`t wait to read about all the awesomely exciting things you`ll be doing next.
(and pray to Buddah that the pancakes recipe won`t end up on my bellyโฆ)
Luvs!!
Joy- oh, joy, you know your a GEM- Iโve been following your blog for a few months now, and have brought a whole slew of followers with me- (friends who now loooove your blog too) but the only complaint I have is that it take FOR EVER to load on my high speed new macbook- that takes split seconds to load everything, including facebook on a sunday afternoon! sooo thats my complaint- its not as nice as your old strait forward blog- but I still love you, and will continue to read your blog, though do to the slow loading, I must confess exiting out before it loaded (i have 3 kids under 5 and time is PRECIOUS;)
hugs
Joy, I love your blog! I only found it recently too, but I love reading it, you are so honest, warm, friendly and love your attitude and outlook on life. Itโs a real treat when I see a new post and canโt wait to read it. Of all the food blogs Iโve read, yours is def one of my favourites..and a fast favourite too as I havenโt been reading it long! haha I think I bookmarked your site after reading the first post!!
I also like how you interact more with your readers (such as the picnic, awesome idea!) and here in your comments too. Not a lot of food bloggers actually reply or give feedback in their comment section, so thatโs a refreshing change. And Iโll bet youโre crazy busy too, so Iโm very impressed!!
Although I really do love your new layout, it takes a bit longer to โget aroundโ so to speak, not as simple as your old layout. But it just takes some getting used to, thatโs all. I really like this new layout and its a fun idea to break things into different categories.
keep up the great work! :)
Joy! I love your new site! I Miss you dearly, in a platonic kind of way. I hope youโre doing great, and it looks like you definitely are! You ow me a call woman! Take care and god bless!
Good morning Joy,
Your writing is just wonderfully warm and funny; I read all of your archives just recently. The new site is a bit more trying and complex to navigate though.
For your new site, could you put a link to your โpreviousโ and โnextโ posts so that if we miss a few we can easily click to them?
Also, are you able to create a subscription field so that readers can receive email notices when you have posted something new?
With thanks, Ruby
Oh wow. Those captures of the original site are pretty awesomesauce. Just wow. Andโฆ youโve come so far!!! ;-)
Iโve been following for over a year, indulge in your blog everyday โ itโs so inspiring. My kids even ask for those โJoy pancakesโ by name.
While on holiday in Poland, I saw some cute little plates and thought, โbet Joy would love these little beauties.โ
I love the personal anecdotes โ make me smile. The new blog is really cute โ just wish I could see the latest post first.
Thanks for being out there and inspiring!!
Joy, your blog is my absolute favoriteโnot just because of your delectable recipes, but also because of your honesty, sense of humor, and overall adorable nature.
The funny thing about the Internet is, you canโt feel all the readers who are made happier by your blog posts. But look at all the comments! Weโre here! You make us smile, and want to bake up a storm. So letโs all be invisible friends; and weโll all help each other when we get overwhelmed. You shall conquer!
Hi Joy!
I too love the adorable new site (and can appreciate the modern and SEO-friendly redesign) but I also donโt like having to click around and go exploring. I feel like the most recent post being the first thing on the page was somehow greeting and welcoming me in the old layout.
However, I LOVE you and your site and Iโm sure that it will just take (and be well worth) some getting used to.
Cheers!
I sure hope itโs easy to get used to Aimee!
I promise that Iโll always have the latest post as the first slide show picture, and the top link in the little blerb of writing directly below the slide showโฆ deal?
Sounds like fun, can I come on this ride too? Iโm looking forward to hearing all about it.
I just want to say that your little blog makes me smile. I will never forget a while ago, I was sitting at my desk at work, having a pretty not-so-nice day and took a break. I found your blog that day and it was about your bank. That was so funny, I forgot about my issues for a minute, and it felt like I had a laugh with a friend. That , my friend, is why I keep readingโฆ
Thank you,
Tiffany
Oh my, may I chime in with my adoration and thanks?! I discovered your site only a few days ago, but it was bookmarked immediately. I think I may be in love!
While I agree that the site takes a bit to load, I am willing to stick it out. You are a great photographer, talented baker, and witty writer. Seriously, I think I may be in love!
I enjoy baking and find this site to be inspirational and generally freaking fantastic! Just what I needed to set aside work and study for a moment and create something wonderful for my friends and family.
I thank youโฆ as does my cake lovinโ husband.
Lis
Thanks for being so patient! Iโm workinโ on the speed issuesโฆ boy am I!
joy, being honest, i miss your old layout. it was so humble and real. this new one is very cool and advanced but it lacks the down to earth-ness that was so evident with your old blog.
still great recipes and fun to read. just dont sell out ;)
<3
I understand how you might like the old design better. I hope you can learn to love this one as well.
Andโฆ if this is selling out then, HOT DANG is selling out a lot of work!!! I always thought it would be much easier! :)
Love the new look! (((HUGS))) to you for sharing so many wonderful recipes and stories. Looking forward to many ore adventures!
Joy, when I found your blog a few months ago it was the highlight of my day, and it is still one of the first sites I check when I sit down at my computer in the morning. The only suggestion I have is some sort of personal recipe box function, where I could add specific recipes that I have made or want to make so that I have them in an easy to find place for later use.
Thanks for all the amazing baking inspiration.
First, Iโm going to echo the Joy love thatโs flowing in this comments section right now. Your regular readers, like me, would read your blog even if it was some minimalist Blogger default template. The photos and voice of a blog are what makes a great blog and keeps people coming back. Tweaking the design and stuff is great and all (love what youโve done to the place, by the way), but something I feel like we bloggers really do for ourselves to keep it fresh and moving forward.
I totally feel you on having the kind of passion for your site that can be more than slightly crazymaking sometimes. But I try to remind myself that I am my own boss when it comes to my site, I report to no one regarding deadlines for posts and content and how things look (a several month hiatus after birthing a flippinโ baby just felt right to me, okay?). I want to make my readers happy so they keep coming back, naturally, but not at the expense of my sanity. Thatโs usually the time that I take a step back, make a recipe or two without photographing it or writing about it, and just enjoy the process. And try and get out and just live a littleโlife experiences make a blogger more interesting! Remember that your site is an extension of yourself, so keep you life interesting first and foremost, and interesting content will naturally come from that. Donโt lose yourself in self-imposed internet stress!
Keep up the great work!
PSโHow were the Melting Greens?!
Thanks so much Shauna! The Melting Greens were amazing! Iโm going to make another batch tomorrow morning and hopefully take pictures of it before I gobble them down! Thanks so much for passing the recipe along! Love!
Yes! Canโt wait to read about your take on them.
Joy, I adore your blog. Seriously, I look forward to it every day and make the recipes on a frequent basis. I also think the new design is really, really cute!
That being said, your site now takes forever to load. :( Maybe itโs my POS computer, but I donโt have problems with other sites. AndโฆI think I preferred everything in one place rather than clicking through to get to all the good bits.
Heart you tho and even a lil extra time and clicking wonโt change the fact that Iโm hopelessly devoted to yooou. ;)
Katie
Hi Joy,
I rarely comment, but I am addicted to your blog! While it took a few visits to get used to the new design, I can say that I love it. It seems like it has a little more of you in it.
I love the stories and your recipes always work out great.
Keep it up!!
Hi Joy,
I think you may know by now, but we think youโre pretty cool. It is really amazing how you share your life with me and the world out there. And although weโve never met, it feels like I know you. I think sharing food with people is that best way to let them get to know you, so maybe thatโs why I feel like weโre friendsโฆ.because Iโve made so many of your recipes and have pretty much loved them all. So keep it up, Joy! Maybe one day you can eat my pancakes, but until then Iโll keep bakinโ yours!
Joy I think you are fabulous, fun, and smart. Your blog is my absolute favorite (Iโm so serious). I love seeing the pictures of your life in LA because Iโm in little olโ Maine. You are an inspiration to me. Chin up, doll.
I love your blog Joy. Iโve only been following for a few months but Iโve tried several recipes already and recommended them to my newsletter subscribers, which I hope has opened up their eyes to the world of food blogs and the Joy of Baking that I love. The old blog was great, but the new look is fabulous and I am glad Iโm along for the ride.
omg, i am dumb. i found it. but it is pretty sneakily placed :-p
i love the new design! i think youโre splendid!
am i stupid, or do you no longer have a search bar. i liked being able to type in โpotatoโ and have it tell me everything youโve done with potatoes. so, could we have the search function back? please?
ps: i made the carrot cake pancakes last night, and they were DELICIOUS!!! thank you :)
Youโre definitely not stupid but you did miss the search bar up on the tippy top of the page.
Maybe I should add a potato category to the recipe index too..
Thanks!
Joy,
I found you through Tastespotting, and I was delighted to find a blog with great recipes, eloquent writing and beautiful pictures. Whenever I miss my old bakery job I turn to you to fulfill my vicarious needs, and many of your delicious goods now fill the stomachs of the foster kids I work with.(I made a strawberry cake last week for a birthday girl)
You are awesome, and there is a legion of bakers cheering at your side to prove it. As I slowly save up bits of my pathetic student salary for a Kitchen Aid Mixer and an Canon Rebel, I hope that one day Iโll grow up to be just like you.
Thanks,
Summer
i have secret dreams of being a baker and, if i were, i would want to grow up and be like you.
you being you and putting it out here for us is enough.
i do, however, understand the kind of ridiculous nature of blogging just begs to be analyzed. weโre writing about ourselves, does that make us super crazy narcissistic or is it possible to remain authentic in this sea of me me me?
at least, this is what i deal with.
just stay true to your heart. when you are speaking your truth (and for the love of all that is holy adding BAKED GOODS to the mix) itโs evident. and we eat it up.
(good lord, that was corny there at the end. but iโm leaving it.)
Joy I love your blog, it inspires me to be a better baker (or just to be a baker!) but Iโm amazed at how much you put into your blog, itโs full of heart, great food and great photos.
Change is hard as lame as that sounds but enjoy the ride. You truly are gifted ride it as long as you can. We need it!!!
I really enjoy your blog and I am not a food blogger, just a foodie at heart. Good for you for sticking with it. I have been at my blog for six months and sometimes wonder why I keep up with it. Do enough people look at it to make it worthwhile, am I wasting too much time on this thing, etc.? But, itโs been fun and Iโve found some great places to spend a few minutes of my time like your place. The personal reflections are great and they add a nice touch to the recipes. Keep it up and stop by my blog one of these days. You have inspired me to keep going.
I love your blog. I love it so much Iโve shown it to other people, cramming it i their face like a kid who has found a shiny shell on the beach โ look..look! LOOOOK!!
Happily nobody has gone โuhโฆyeahโฆ thatโsโฆum, really interesting.. now put it down and wash your handsโ.
No.
Theyโve gone, โOMG SQUEEE!! Look at the pictures! That recipe sounds awesome! Oh I have to show this to my mother/bestfriend/flatmate/co-workerโฆโ
You should be proud :)
I have been a lurker for a long time, but never posted. I think your blog bring JOY to so many people. I admire your creativity and willingness to share it. I love your website and actually prefer the new design. Change always stinks, but it makes you grow and think a little bit different than before. Keep it upโฆโฆโฆJust wished I lived in LA area instead of London area. Iโd have been at that rooftop picnic in a NY minute!
I love reading your blog! I get super delicious recipes and snazzy ideas from you! And I love your quirky sense of humor and positive outlook on life! Youโre an inspiration, Joy! Keep it up!
p.s. My boyfriend is a photographer and gives you two thumbs up on the delicious, mouth-watering photos you post! :) yah for you!
Hey Joy, thatโs a lovely post. Thanks for sharing how youโve come along. Iโve been here for a few month now and loving coming back. Youโre awesome.
Hi Joy.
Thank you so much for your wonderful blog. It is the place on the internet that I come to read when I need a break from my life. I love my life, really I do, but I research trauma and genocide and sometimes, life needs to be about cupcakes and bees.
Your writing, photography, and recipes provide lightness to balance the density of pain.
Jen
Joy, I am so excited for you! The website is and was very cool, you should be proud. I loved your very first post. When I was first learning to cook, my mom was forever telling me,โDo you have everything assembled on the counter?โ. It is a big scary idea, sharing your thoughts and putting yourself out there for the general public. You have done a wonderful job and I am sure your loved ones are very proud of you.
PS โ LOVE the glazed lime cake!
Joy, Iโm prolly one of your oldest followers, and Iโve been following you for about a year now. The first time I commented I was mortified that I was defending you regarding a post written by your dad!!! It was pretty weird to find that out, and once I got over it, I did laugh. But I must tell you a secret. You and your blogโฆwell you kind of brought me back from a haze I was in. Iโve been baking forever, along with cooking, but had lost the โsparkโ, so to speak. I have a kid about your age, and since sheโs gone it just didnโt seem to matter what got slapped on the table for dinner. Oh, I still cooked, even whipped out a box cake once in a while, but there was no โoomphโ to it. Then one night, stumbling around, I found YOU. Wow, I thought, that looks interesting! And your personal writes made me feel kind of homey with ya. So I kept coming back. Then I made one of your cakes. Cupcakes. Cinnamon rolls. And you brought me back! Thanks for being the sparkle you are, and no matter WHAT you do to this blog, I will figure it out and return as long as you keep putting yourself out there. One thing I do miss tho is the cute pic of you that used to be here. But the new one is fine. Whatever you do is fine!!! Thank you always!!
keep doinโ what youโre doinโ cuz youโre doinโ it right
Love you, Joy! And love your daily blog.
Hi Joy โ Like Megan (#52!), I often donโt post because I feel a bit like Johnny-come-lately to the party when itโs late in the day and everyone else has already said witty, happy things about your fabulousness. But I check your blog EVERY day because I donโt want to miss a recipe, and anecdote, or an open letter to a rude airplane passenger. You rock. Seriously.
Wow. Itโs good to know that Iโm not the only one that feels a little nuts sometimes. I love your blog though. I look forward to seeing all that youโve got new (both in the kitchen and out) each day. Iโm not a big one for change, either, so I feel ya there. Iโm loving the new site too! Keep up the good work, Joy! =)
Joy, you dear, thanks for sharing your thoughts! It is your blog, after all, and I think that you ought to just keep being yourself at this spot in the virtual web, because as for me, I love reading what you have to say!
As for trying new things and being terrified about it, I know perfectly well what you mean, though in different contexts. :) But I am learning that sometimes these kinds of crazy things are doors that lead to big and amazing things, even if we donโt see the end right away.
Keep posting, whether you have good or bad things on your mind and heart!
We love you, your blog and especially your recipies!!!! Yeah the new blog took some getting used to. And yeah I hate change but this is good. Iโm on your site as much as humanly possible! You have inspired me to think about a change in careers. Oh, and did I mention your style of writting totally reminds me of my childhood best friend.( Ah sweet memories) Am I blabbing? Anywayโฆ YOU ROCK!
Change is an adventure and youโre adventurous! They new site is awesome, and as a totally technically challenged individual โ itโs so user friendly. And pretty! I canโt wait until you have a cookbook!
I heart your blog. itโs seriously my favourite one out thereโฆ I even blog about my love of it. your personality and recipes are the absolute BOMB! thatโs for being yourself, letting all of us foodies who think like you that itโs cool to be soooo into bakingโฆ. not only do i feel like i get a great recipe when i visit your site โ i feel like iโm catching up with an old friend. thanks for being so pure and lovely and full of joyโฆ thanks for being you. Your new site is awesomeโฆ keep up the brilliant work! (oh โ i wish i was a half as creative as you areโฆ but i love trying) :0)
Joy,
You were actually one of the first people that inspired me to begin my own food blogging adventure :)
Thank you =)
~Rose
Rad. So rad.
Hi Joy, I LOVE your blog. It is such a refreshing break from work :) Keep pouring your heart out and do what you love!
hey joy! i left a comment before regarding the new layout- which is really gorgeous ;) but just wanted to reiterate how incredible i think you are- for undertaking this whole blog makeover, and even the blog at all, and for taking time out to give to others, like with the whole picnic get-together! i think youโre great! take your time to adjust, dont worry, itโll be awesome ;)
just being honest hereโฆlove the change/update, but dislike the double click navigation it takes to get to the meat (i.e. the food!). Iโm looking for easy access to recipes and find your newer design harder to work with. If you donโt catch the rotating/flip image on the landing page, you end up clicking through to something else. Otherwise, have to click on โin the kitchenโ Am I getting that right? Also, as long as Iโm being honestโฆthe pale pink, light gray text is not so easy to see. There. I said it. Carry on, Joy. Enjoy the work you produce, even if itโs hard to get at. Thx.
I totally understand your frustration. Iโve put links below the slide show that will take you directly into the posts that are featured in pictures. Those links are in big pink lettersโฆ and they donโt rotate, so you wonโt be taken somewhere you donโt want to go.
Thanks for the feedback!
Hello Joy!
My name is Kenny and Iโm 18 years old. For the past year Iโve gotten really interested in baking and have been taking photos of some of my stuff and posting them onto my facebook. I search online for new recipes that catch my eye and thatโs how I found your blog. Your blog is my FAVORITE blog of all the blogs Iโve come accross. Your recipes and ideas are absolutely fantastic and your photos are beautiful. I probably check your blog 5 times a week. Youโve really got a talent.
After reading this latest blog I felt compelled to respond and to tell you what an amazing job youโre doing. Cheer up please and donโt worry. I look up to you.
Sincerely,
Kenny
Kenny! Thank you so much for the sweet comment! You totally made my day! Happy Baking and let me know if you have any recipe requests. Iโll try my best to bake em up for you!
Hello again Joy!
I do have a recipe request, but please ignore it or excuse it if itโs unappealing. Iโve tried making challah a couple of times and everytime it comes out, well, poorly :(
I was just wondering if you had a good challah recipe and the intructions for the process. I always have some trouble with bread baking. Iโm also a sweet potato fanatic so if youโd rather not do the challah, Iโd love to see how your sweet potato pie looks.
Well Iโm leaving for college soon, but luckily Iโll have access to a kitchen and Iโll keep on looking into your blog.
Sincerely,
Kenny
I think Iโll go have a doughnut. Maybe that will help you you feel better. Virtual doughnut eating. Works for me. And then Iโll sit back and enjoy reading your blog like I always do. Then maybe Iโll have another doughnut.
You are very sweet and talented. Iโm sure you have plenty of followers. Iโve only commented once before but Iโve been checking out your recipes for quite a while.
Oh Joy, you are like โLike Water for Chocolateโ in blog form. You are pure heart and soul, passion and uncertainty. I love it any time you come to this space and tell us a story, any which way you se fit. That thereโs a stack of pancakes and a recipe in there somewhere is just a bonus. I particularly enjoy when you talk about your family and your quest for โhusband hugs.โ
Like Water for Chocolate analogy!? Dang thatโs a lovely compliment! Thank you Yolanda!
Joy, kudos to you for being brave to do what you do. Your dedication to this site certainly shows. And you always make me laugh, in a good way.
p.s. I ordered the Hummingbird book and it is lovely. I canโt wait to make something from it.
I love, love, love your blog! One thing, however, is that I would love to be able to read all your posts chronologically. I just found your blog a few months ago, so I am trying to go back and read all the older posts.
Other than that, I have to say, this is my FAVORITE blog, and I love how real you are and how you write! Every recipe of yours I have tried (which is a lot at this point!) has turned out insanely delicious!
I suppose the only way to read my blog mostly chronologically is to go through the In the Kitchen posts, and keep clicking back for the previous posts at the bottom of the page. If I think of a better wayโฆ Iโll let you know!
When Iโm sad, I come to your blog and it makes me smile, makes me happy. When I want something delicious and comforting to bake, I come to your blog and I find it. I think the new site is lovely, but truthfully, it could be a white word document with black text, and you, Joy, would still be enchanting and wonderful to read and bake with.
Itโs funny, because I too am starting out a new venture, very nervously, and am trying to get my head around blogs and sites and design and such. I always wanted to make comic books, and I have been for the last year, and Iโm going to exhibit at the Small Press Expo in a few weeks, my very first experience trying to sell my work. Been trying to put some kind of blog together so I can sell my work online, and what Iโve got now is so simple and dopey-amateur looking. Funny thing is, I saw your beautiful site redesign and felt really inadequate โ itโs so slick and classic and lovely. But knowing it took a while to get to this point, that your site started out just as simple as mine is, well, thatโs nice to see. And all this site design and maintenance stuff is manageable, though it takes some patience. This post of yours is encouraging, so thanks. :-)
Anyways, just sharing. *hugs* your way. Youโre a cool chick and I feel like your friend, though itโs only through the Interweb. ;-) I read this site every day. Iโll keep reading and baking, you keep working out the kinks.
Rad Heather! Thanks for sharing. Good luck with your comic books.. for real!
I totally know where youโve been with the redesignโit took us over a year to get The Cupcakes Club to work the way we want it to and there are still some tweaks that need to be tweaked.
We have had so many people come over and take a peek by being โfriendsโ with you this last weekโthank you! Like you, we still try to figure out new ways to make money to pay for everythingโbut I just received an email from a grandma who had sent some Cupcakes Club products to her grandchild and told us how her graddaughter was SO excited to get something in the mail JUST FOR HER and LOVED it allโand you have to sigh.
Itโs exhausting and draining..but obviously you must love what you doโjust like we do with our โCupcakeโ girls- to keep going for it. Best of luck and thanks for all you do!
Hey Prettyโฆ
Iโve been here since the almost beginning. Iโve weathered changes with you and am delighted to get a sneak peak into your life as well as your cooking. You are enchanting and delightful and quite often bring a smile to my lips and a lift to my day, even when youโre freaking out. I like that you are real and appreciate your openness. Youโre right, this was made for you, that my dear was evident from the beginning.
Keep on rockin girl!
Joy, I think your blog โ both old and new โ is AWESOME! You can go to any food blog and find good recipes, but your blog is super rad in that your personality shines through and keeps me wanting to come back daily to check it it out. Your witty, sincere, heartfelt, honest writing is what makes this blog aโฆwell a joy to read! Donโt change a thing! Be you and that is all we need! OK, and your recipes are pretty wonderful as well.
Oh, Joy. One of my life beliefs is, โThink Big! But, be easy on yourself.โ Youโve created an adventure for yourself- and itโs all there because you had the drive to do it. Youโve created the world of Joy The Baker, and you brought us all along for the ride.
We love that! And personally, I wouldnโt have started blogging (itโs been a week now!) had it not been for the gentle and whimsical voice youโve given your blog.
If it all seems to much, have a bourbon, a donut and take a little break. Think Big, but go easy on yourself, Joy.
all the best,
Chef Robear
Robert! Man alive is that good advice for me! Thank you so much!
Thanks for sharing your story. I love checking your blog to see what is new. You are very inspiring.
Joy-
I look forward to checking your blog every day. I know exactly the excitement you felt when you discovered food blogs, I did it about two months ago! I just hope I can get as good at
a) baking
b) taking photos
c) writing about it
as you have become! (At the very least I can practice the bourbon and doughnut consumption side of things!) Keep at it, if nothing else than for the inspiration you give for baking days everywhere!
i love love love your blog. i am only a recent follower of the past few months but it is exactly what i dream to be doing one day. thank you for giving me a peak into your life and letting me live a little vicariously through you!
Joy, I find that change is (always, for me anyway) painful and tends to stir up so many emotions. I hate change. Dread it. Fear it even, at times. However, if thereโs one thing Iโve learned, itโs that change is good. It may take time for the dust to settle, to get back into that coveted comfort zone (ohh how I lurrrve the โcomfort zoneโ!), but youโll get there. And it will be good.
Donโt worry lovely lady! Just go with the flow and itโll take you where you need to be :)
I have been a long time follower of your blog, but this is my first comment. Iโve never commented before, because letโs face itโฆ.lotโs of other people comment, and tell you exactly what Iโm thinkinโ! But Iโm writing now to officially declareโฆ.I love your blogโฆI love your personality that shineโs through your words on here, and I have tried several of your recipes, and they have all been AWESOME! Iโm always excited to see when you have posted something new! I appreciate all that you have gone through, to present such a JOY in my life! :)
Thanks for coming out of the shadows Megan! That means a lot. Rad. Thanks!
Iโve always enjoyed your blog and am grateful for the time, effort and sharing you do for all of us. It canโt be easy and change can be scaryโฆ.blogs may change but stay true to yourself! Weโll always be here for you!
Joy, I love following this blog because weโre the same age (10 year class reunions, ugh) and you inspire me to push myself a little, redesign my own blog, actually start writing in it once in awhile. Note, I said you inspire me toโฆnot that Iโve actually done yet.
Keep it up. Although I love the redesign, itโs really the tone of the writing that keeps me coming back.
Joy,
It is truly apparent that this is something you love and comes from your heart. It shines through every word that you write and every picture that you take. You are one lucky girl to have found your passion. How many people search their entire life to find what you have?
Blessings.
Joy-just keep on being you and baking all of your great stuff-the blog, design, and associated BS will change, but as long as the you and your goodies stay the same-fresh, funky, sassy and real, Iโll be checking in every day for my fix!!
Love love the blog. Iโm new here so I had your old blog for about a month before the โredecorationโ. Love it!
oh..and gimme some of those shiny cinnamon rolls.
Joy, everything looks great as usual! The site is amazing โ you are doing a wonderful job!!
Joy, youโre awesome! Iโm glad you stick with the blog. Itโs my favorite to read.
Iโm totally with you there, Iโm going sort of through the same โ having the blog redesigned, will still be a personal foodblog, though linked to what I hope will also be a job (as you can see Iโm not saying anything yet, just in case!).
Sorry itโs all in Italian, Iโve had twin bilingual Italian and Spanish blogs until now, will eventually move on to Spanish only (thatโs where I live). I sometimes wish I wrote it in English, but being the language knowledge the way it is in Spain Iโd have very few local followersโฆ
Keep pu the good job, I love reading you!
Joyโฆkeep up the good work. Im sad that what started out simple has been stressing you out. Just make it the way it makes you happiest and donโt worry about us total strangers out here! I enjoy reading about your life and love your recipes. I like finding out that there are some normal people living out there in LA! :) I love learning about places that you love to go and am thankful that you like to share those pictures with us. Take a deep breath and have a great holiday weekend!
I had no idea that internet blogging entailed so much work. As I read it struck me that although you may earn your money from someone else you are, nevertheless, self-employed.
Youโre brave to open your mind to us like you do and, with what you offer, Iโll keep coming back regardless of the site format (which, by the way, I think is just super). You have a good soul and I wish all good things.
I love the new site you have created. The color scheme, whimisical theme, and layout take it up to a new level of professionalism while letting your charm and personality still shine through. Hang in there, the dust will settle soon!
Itโs hard to get used to the new format, but Iโm sure with feedback and trial and error youโll get it right. It certainly wonโt stop me from visiting each day. I donโt have a blog of my own, but I have been in heaven since discovering the world of food blogs. I love to bake, but donโt have the gift of words. I love your recipes and your stories of real life happenings. Keep it up!!
I love and truly adore you!!! I am so going to start a blog one of these days and its all because of you well you and Framgirl Susan but thats for a different commentโฆanywho the new blog is fab and the only thing I might want to yell and scream about is that there isnโt enough time in the day to try all of the yummy sounding recipies I find on here consistantly! You are amazing Joy!!! So keep it coming!
Joy, I love the new site design and have been reading every single one of your posts for the past few months now. Keep up the great work! :)
Someone told me about your blog just a few days ago so I am a newcomer to your yummy world. But just wanted to let you know that your design is so cute and whimsical. And seeing the images from your original site is pretty cool. Interweaving life with food with art is a beautiful thing. Happy 2 years to you!
wow โ great post!
even those shots you say were clumsy are just so beautiful!
as long as youโre sharing, iโm reading!
I love the โฆ , I can barely write 3 sentences without the โฆ , I think itโs very charming :)
Iโm worried about sounding critical, but you did ask, right? Iโll do the compliment sandwich: I love, love your stream of thought posts. I think the new site is sort of bland, especially the all white comment section here. Maybe add more pink? And I love your simple fun recipes. No one can have too many pancakes at my house either. There. Howโd that go? (And I like to print your recipes too- maybe a printer ready version?)
Jill! You donโt sound critical! Iโm looking for feedback, thank you!
Have you found the printer friendly versions of my recipes? Thereโs a link to printer friendly just below the title of the recipe, within the postโฆ. where the recipe is. Maybe I should do a post on thisโฆ
Thanks for the feedback! so much!
Your recipes are fantastic. You put honest feedback, advice, and โlife lessonsโ into your posts which all result in something yummy for the tummy, mind and soul! Youโve added new twists and turns to my โold standbyโ recipe list, and I trust when a new post/recipe is upโฆitโs worth a try!
Is blogland going through some kind of identity crisis? I kid you not Iโve come across very similar stuff in at least three different blogs over the last week or two. Maybe itโs the change of season, or the wondering if anyone misses you when youโre gone, or the justifying of all the work that goes into a good blog that has all of you in such a state.
Youโre doing a great job, hang in there.
Thank you for your candid and honest post. Your website looks great. Blogging is not easy. There are a lot of blogs out there, but a lot of them are filled with fluff. I love the way you showcase a recipe with your stories and personality. It is not just a recipe.
A lot of us voted for you for the Bloggies 2009 because we believed in your ability, and your great blog. Not just because you wanted us to vote for you. This is why we read your blog. Please keep going and sharing with us. I know I look forward to your new posts.
Joy, you keep on doing exactly what you are doing, because you are inspirational. I am pretty much where you were two years ago โ several months into my โlife via whatever I am cookingโ blog and amazed (and a little terrified) that people I am not related to are READING it. So keep doing it, and please please keep putting up these posts about the process, because you are lighting the way for all of us coming behind you. THANK YOU!
The evolution of your site is a reflection of your own evolution. Thereโs more going on in your life, you have more to say, more to bake, and more people follow. I love the changes.
Are people giving you a hard time? โCause Iโll go beat them up, I will.
Your simple statement, I feel lost, was all I needed to hear this morning. Knowing that thereโs a cake-baking, heart-pouring fellow-seeker out there trying to figure it all out too was like a little hug. Iโm in a major life transition into single-motherhood and I follow your blog religiously because itโs a little bite of happy in a rocky road. So rock on, and thanks for reminding me to live in the question and keep baking.
So Iโve been getting really emotional about EVERYTHING lately, from movies, to books, and now apparently blogs. Thanks fro everything YOU do Joy the Baker!
Love ALL of your posts. My only issue is printing the recipes because unless I copy and paste into word, I end up jamming the printer at work because of the 100+ comments people have left at the end of each recipe posting that print along with your coveted recipe :) Iโd love to be able to have a link to a printable recipe, sans comments. Or I could just be less lazy and copy and paste into word. Your recipes are totally worth it!!!
Guess what!? I finally got with it and made Printable Recipes. The link to a simple and printable recipe is just below the recipe title. Let me know if you have trouble finding it!
Awesome! Iโm going to print out the red velvet cupcake recipe now and bake them over the weekend :) Thanks!
Joy, I love your blog, yours is one of my favourites! Wonderful photos, wonderful writing, wonderful recipes! Please donโt ever stop blogging, keep it up!
Joy,
As an amateur blogger who has ended up mixing life with recipes with life, I love the combination. I have far, far fewer readers than you, but I think people appreciate variety. I personally love knowing more about people, so in this case, donโt be shy! For me, my blog started out as a personal blog, but when I started cooking more, recipes started popping up on the blog. So keep it up โ donโt doubt yourself, girl!
Let me say again how much I enjoy reading your blog. It is always so incredibly joyful ;] and so Iโm impressed by the way in which youโre sharing your anxieties with the readers โ it must have taken some courage to do this!
The new design is lovely (though frankly speaking it wonโt always load correctly and the site comes in two parts on my screen โ probably the fault of my Internet connection). It might take some time to get used to it but thatโs what new things are all about, right?
Iโm glad youโre blogging here!
Joy, I couldnโt possibly write anything more eloquent than the comments already posted about how wonderful and amazing your blog is! I keep coming back to your blog because your recipes have made me a hero at home and at work, your cheery site makes me smile, and your honest and heartfelt writing inspires me to be a better person and blogger.
Perhaps my husbandโs recent comments to me after yet another baking adventure will put it in perspective better than I can: โSweetie, your baking skills were already pretty good. Ever since you started reading that blog โ and Iโll be honest, those 10 minutes at the computer every day make me jealous! โ your baking ability has gone through the roof and youโre a happier person. When youโre happy, Iโm happy, so keep doing what youโre doing!โ
So, Joy? Donโt worry about what we think โ do what makes you happy, because when youโre happy, then weโre happy (and slightly rounder, but who cares?)!! :)
Aw! Thanks for the beautiful comment Shauna! Iโm glad that you can find cool stuff here to bring into your home to make you and your hubby happy. Dang thatโs cool!
Hey Joy!
The reason I keep coming back and reading your lovely blog is because of your honest personality which shows through in the funny writing, and all the delicious things you blog. I mean, your photography skills are amazing and can make me hungry for bakes full of ingredients I donโt even like! Some of the new layout is a bit confusing (like the scrolling photos at the top) but it wonโt stop people reading because youโre still posting! As long as you still enjoy your own blog and getting comments etc, then thats all that matters whether youโre posting on the simplest blogger template or the fanciest multi-page website :D
XXX
Still love the site! Love you and your writing too. Keep it real, Joy. Youโre doing a wonderful job. :-)
Another post I needed to read on a day when Iโm feeling a little overwhelmed by the whole โmaking a living as a professional cupcakerโ. Some days u question it all, but then, it comes back to what youโve saidโitโs scary but in a โgood wayโ. thanx for the courage to be yourself, honest and true-means alot to your readers. have a good one!
Hey Joy โ Iโm really delighted for you! You sound manic but happy manic at the moment and thatโs always good. I myself am working in a job I donโt like [understatement] and am trying to build up the courage to start a blog to satisfy the other parts of my life that I do likeโฆ Iโm trying, trying to focus on it and it seems to not be working very fast โ something always in the way. I cook and write. They are the two things I do. Thatโs it โ no exercise, I donโt help stranded whales find their way back to the water, I donโt save the world, but I do do those two things. The reason Iโm telling you this is cause youโre pretty inspirational stuff! You here, doing what you do, itโs fire-in-the-belly kinda inspirational! So much so that I have created a blog and am now just trying to hammer out my first post โ see, youโre inspiring ! The new look blog is great โ keep it up
Ax
Hey Joy,
I like your food posts. I like your crazy hey-look-what-I-found-posts. I like your confidentially-talking-to-the-reader-posts. I like it all! Please donโt ever stop! You inspire meโฆ
YAY for Joy โ thanks for sticking it out and delighting us all with your magic.
The new design was worth it and one of these days you are going to feel just as comfortable here as in worn out jeans.
I almost doโฆ

While some information on the site is better organized (the very obvious recipe menu makes browsing your old posts easier), Iโm finding that the site is taking a lot longer to load (and itโs not my connection, people) and that some of the presentation seems jumbled and confusing. Overall, I donโt like this layout as much as the last one, which was more straight-forward (for example, the new image rotating link bar makes it difficult to keep track of whatโs new and whatโs a couple posts old โ not good). I love the colours, though!
Itโs definitely not your connection. I know Joy has been expressing frustration with her hosting company on Twitter. Apparently she is being โthrottledโ now that she in getting more traffic. Sounds like she will be changing hosts soon. (Hopefully!)
ohhh I thought it was maybe my connection! Other than the slow loading I think the site is gorgeous! Super Job Joy! :)
what a journey it has been!! and yeah whether you like it or not, weโre in with youโฆok lemme speak for myselfโฆi am!!
Iโm glad to hear that Iโm not the only one who is completely overwhelmed sometimes with how their internet baby has grown. Though change is good and growing up is better, it can be a bit frightening.
Hello Joy the Baker, iโm Sandy from the Philippines, i just recently stumbled upon your blog and to be a honest, i love love love it! Iโm also a baker just like you and i enjoy your funny, informative and downright delicious post! I made your fudgy brownie recipe just yesterday and it was so damn fudgy and oh so good! Thank you for sharing recipes and also fun stories about your life. I will keep visiting your site and hopefully re create your delicious recipes. Thanks for being and inspiration. Lots of love =)
Iโm really glad you put up that list thing below the picture scrolling part (BTW, I hope my technical computer jargon isnโt too much for you to handle). It helps me keep track of which posts Iโve already read, something I was having trouble with when only the scrolling picture thing happened. Iโm a little sad cause I canโt view the blog at work anymore (our intertubes are too narrow or something, so says IT guy) but itโs ok, gives me something to look forward to when I get home!
On another note, I really love the gusto with which you live life. It is uplifting and inspiring and I hope you stay JOYousโฆ
(sorry, couldnโt help the pun)
Itโs great to know that the text below the box helps you out. Thanks for the tip!
I love your blog. I look at it almost every day as itโs really fun and cute and cheery. Foodwise โ It inspires me to bake and try new things I wouldnโt normally.
Non-foodwise: I love seeing the fun things you get up to โ the cute pictures you take and hearing little snippets about your life all the way across the globe.
Itโs fun and lovely and the new site is great. yes I did find the change a little scary at first, but I have since adapted and I love the new look! YAY!
In this day and age when the internet keeps people separate from one another, youโve proved the opposite to be true. Your writing, your recipes, your photos, and yes, you yourself bring people together. People who love food โ love to cook it, bake it, and eat it โ gather here in this space that YOUโVE created, and that will always be something for you to call your own. Everyone who comes here feels like they know you, because youโve allowed us access to your talent and creativity. For those of us who had a chance to meet you in person a couple of weeks ago, well, that was just icing on the cake. You keep doing what youโre doing, change it, tweak it, keep it the same, it doesnโt matter โ weโll be here no matter what.
I felt to touched reading this. The thing that impresses me most about you is that youโre always authentic and real. I love reading about your life and your love of food because of that. In some ways, it must seem things are getting a little crazy seem strange looking back to where you started but you deserve all your success so much and itโs such a pleasure travelling with you on this food odyssey.
Ok you totally impress me more and more every day! Your camera skills at 4:30 in the morning are better than my camera skills when I am fully awake and with a camera phone, dang girl, you are good! I love your new site, its loading smoothly now. Keep going, you got it and I will keep baking and I will keep eating!
Yeah, I know how you feel โ except for the professional baker part. We do get so emotionally attached to our food blog when the food blog is a mirror of our life. Mine is like that, me and food all wrapped up together as one. But as husband says โStay focused, do what makes YOU happy and not what you think will make someone else happy. It has to be you, all natural, as you feel.โ Donโt get yourself so freaked out by the whole that you lose what is important โ the food you love to make, the writing that comes from the heart. You are a fantastic baker and your blog is amazing. Keep it up!
Your fancy technology is chocolate for the eye and the new site is super cool. But your honest down-to-earth funny SELF is what keeps me coming back to this blog after Iโve abandoned all the others.
I so enjoy your blog and share it with all my friends. I even have it featured on my blog. When I read Joy the Baker itโs like Iโm actually getting out of it whatever a cupcake does after a tough day at work, and when I read todayโs post I felt a little guilty like I had been taking this wonderful thing from you and not giving back (aka commenting/thanking you). So, thank you. Itโs absolutely delicious. xoxo.
I hope this means youโre thinking of quitting your day job soon and becoming a full time blogger. Go for it, Joy-baby!
Just so you know, I think youโre pretty cute, your blog is kinda awesome, your first post is just as enjoyable as your most recent and those sunglasses suit you like nobodyโs business. Thanks for sharing your life and your wicked cooking skills with all of us on the internet. Your recipes are kind of awesome for my impressing-dates skills and super enjoyable for my distraction from work for a few minutes a day.
Keep up the good work, will ya?
Thanks ladybear! For reals.
the new site is shiny, fun and totally what i would hope for from you, ms. joy. sending lots of love from new england!
Joy, you are the awesomest.
Iโm coming at this from the other side. Iโve spent the last 10 or so years making web pages and learning all about HTML, CSS and programming and blogs. Itโs only been in the past 6 months that Iโve come to terms with the fact that I am capable of baking intoxicatingly good desserts as long as I have some decent recipes and some photos to inspire me. Exciting times.
