Barbecue Onion Rings: baked and fried

Uh-huh.

It’s onion ring time.

Were you the little girl that would put a small onion ring on her ring finger and pretend that she was married?

Yea… me neither. ย That’s weird.

… And I definitely didn’t do that today, as a grown-ass lady. ย That would be even more odd.

Except I totally did. ย Yea. ย So what.

Onion rings can be baked. ย Onion rings can be fried. ย Onion rings are always delicious. ย Especially when eaten off your finger.

I love to smash barbecue flavor into my homemade onion rings. ย Smash!

With chili powder, paprika, garlic powder, and hot sauce, we can totally simulate barbecue flavor.

Fried up or baked crisp, onion rings just work. ย They make you prettier and more popular. ย Totally true.

I dipped the baked rings in a mixture of sour cream and barbecue sauce. ย I now want to dip everything in sour cream and barbecue sauce. ย Whatever.

Fried Barbecue Buttermilk Onion Rings will make you a hero! ย You’ll need a fry thermometer and a good amount of oil. ย They’re hot and crisp and totally worth the frying effort.

Baked onion rings are infused with flavor and coated in panko. ย They’re crisp and crunchy, and strangely reminiscent of coconut baked shrimp. ย I dunno. ย They really are delicious, and don’t require a ton of oil. ย Super easy, simple, and yumtown!

Barbecue Baked Onion Rings

serves 3 or 4 people

2 medium yellow onions, sliced into rings

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

1 teaspoon chili powder

1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

1 large egg

1/4 cup buttermilk

dash of hot sauce

2 cups panko bread crumbs

1/2 cup sour cream

1/4 cup barbecue sauce

Place a rack in the center and upper third of the oven and preheat oven to 400 degrees F. ย Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.

In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, salt, paprika, chili powder, red pepper flakes, and garlic powder. ย Set aside.

In a separate bowl, whisk together egg, buttermilk, and hot sauce.

In a separate bowl, place bread crumbs.

Slice onion into rings, and separate into separate rings.

Using one hand, and leaving one hand clean, dip onion rings into the flour mixture, then the egg mixture, then coat in panko crumbs. ย Place in a single layer across the prepared baking sheets. ย Bake for 10 minutes, remove from the oven, carefully flip the onion rings, and bake for another 10 to 12 minutes, until rings are browned and crisp.

While the onion rings bake, stir together sour cream and barbecue sauce.

Remove onion rings from the oven and serve immediately with sauce. ย

  4. These were really good – my family ate the whole batch. However, how did you keep your panko crumbs from getting gummy? I had to toss them all out halfway because they refused to stick on the onions – such a bummer!

  9. Of course I did the onion ring ring!! But I also put Bugles on the ends of my fingers and pretend they were claws of some sort. :)

    Unfortunately my adult fingers are too big for that now and they just crack the Bugles open. I know this from experience. *sigh*

  12. I tried baking onion rings a few weeks ago and I was so disappointed. The batter wouldn’t stick to the onion, but it surely stuck to the parchment paper I put under them to minimize mess. That recipe even used potato chips for crispiness so I had such high hopes! Absolute failure. Maybe after I get over it I’ll try your recipe instead!

  13. I made your onion ring recipe a few times (the fried ones) and they were amazing. AH-MAAAZ-ING! I made a big batch on the weekend of Prince William and Kates wedding for a Royal wedding party I threw. I served them with fried chicken. yum! totally not British, totally not royal but totally scrumptious. I had never known it was so easy to make these from scratch :) everyone loved them!

    1. If Prince William and Kate only knew how delicious onion rings are, they would abdicate and/or defect immediately!!!!!!!!

  14. Onion rings and french fries are my food weaknesses…if I started making them at home I would definitely have to buy all new pants! These look awesome. I never put an onion ring on my finger, but I vividly remember doing that with those peach flavored gummy rings.
