Friends, hi I’ve missed you! I’m treading water in life right now… and I’ll tell you – I’ve never been very good at treading water. Do you remember the dreaded summer camp swimming tests? Wherein a bunch of children get thrown in a pool or lake to tread water long enough to prove to the adults standing on the outskirts of that body of water that they had enough staying power to *probably* not drown over the summer?
This is some real child of the 80’s and 90’s stuff.
I always choked during those tests – literally, from the frantic splashing of my peers. And failing that test meant that I couldn’t swim past a certain rope for the entire summer! A real bummer mostly because all of my friends were strong swimmers.
Did this experience, summer after summer, make me a stronger swimmer? Nope, thank you. I resisted.
ANYWAY – here I am, treading a different kind of water. Waters that involve more house projects and big decisions than I know what to do with. Somehow I have a delusional faith in my DIY capabilities so…. we’ll see how it all shakes out (starting with removing all of the wallpaper in the dining room with a scraper, lol).
I hope this finds you well, resting, with a second cup of coffee that hits just right.

Hi Joy. My husband and I have a 99 year old house in Oakland. We removed a lot of wallpapers and an especially fancy wallpaper border with a repeated depiction of a farm in the kitchen. If you haven’t purchased a handheld steamer, I highly recommend doing that to speed the process along! Nine years later and the house is so comfy and comfortable. We recently purchased a 1950 Spartan trailer and the DIY overwhelm is very real! I keep trying to remember it’s a marathon, not a sprint. I love your voice and have been reading along since the LA days.
Thanks so much for the mention! I was so confused last week why we had so many people from the USA on our website. Let me know if you would like the pink dress it would suit you so much. Thanks for the love. Cassie – Variety Hour xx
I’m glad I’m not the only one (because I felt like the only one) who failed those summer camp swim tests. The only “red cap” in the shallow swimming area? No thank you, I’ll go read a book literally anywhere else lol.
We are sisters in swim test failure. :)
Ellie Krieger – as of old food network fame!? I just ran across her cookbook at the library. I would watch her show growing up. How sweet.
Yes! One in the same!
I’m moving back into a 120 year old house that I bought back in the 80’s. I lived in it for a long time and was never really able to get it fixed up right. The only thing I was able to do was to put a metal roof on it and that was a great decision as, where I live, they are the best and most durable option. I left, moved into a brand new house for about 10 years and now I’m going ‘home’ to my old house and I have the money to fix it up right with all new wiring, plumbing and HVAC.
These old wonders are like lovely children that time must be spent on and in return they are good for the next generation. These old places are so well built but they do need constant action and attention. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Your ‘new’ house is a beauty. Bear with her!
This really is so encouraging Vaughan! Thank you for sharing this. I hope you so enjoy moving back to your old beauty!
Summer of Joy! And transitions. Hang in there. Nothing so hard and satisfying as working on your own home while trying to keep all the other balls in the air. Do what you can, get help where you can’t. You’ve got this! PS: Great links! My favorite reads of the week. And will be making PB coffee stat!
Thank you so much for the encouragement, Mary! It really is a sweet boost!
Garden and Gun is the best magazine around.
It’s fantastic!
I think this is the summer of project and I didn’t buy a house. I’ve been creating outdoor spaces since March that will be wonderful for years to come. Now I’m ready for a nap and a break – so I understand how a summer of diy is daunting. You got this Joy take it one project at a time and look at how much money you are saving !
Thank you, my friend! And well done on all your hard work!
