Landโ€™s End is Self Care

Good morning, friends! This week is the Austin County Fair, and let me tell youโ€”small-town Texas is truly where my heart is. The boots, the rodeo, the paradeโ€”itโ€™s such a fun way to usher in the change of seasons. Between that and the fact that Thanksgiving is right around the corner (seriously, if we blink, itโ€™ll be here tomorrow), Iโ€™m trying to soak up the moment while also prepping my house for a full-family visit. Thereโ€™s nothing better than a full house (as long as the refrigerator is equally full) (and someone helps with the dishes).

The kitchen has been my calm amidst the whirlwind, and Iโ€™m easing into Thanksgiving prep one recipe at a time. Well, one Pumpkin Texas Sheet Cake and Apple Fritter Focaccia at a time. But today? Iโ€™m letting it be Sunday โ€“ taking a break from the kitchen to peel old wallpaper from the primary bedroom.  Itโ€™s a chore, but Sunday chores go slowly.

I hope this greets you on an easy morning and itโ€™s an easy offering this week.  Take whatcha need!

โ€ข  Look what got delivered to the front porch!  Itโ€™s this seasonโ€™s Joy the Baker Magazine and Iโ€™ll tell you โ€“ I think itโ€™s my best one yet! This issue is packed with new holiday recipes, food photography from the incredibly talented Karlee Flores, essays from our own Amy Estes and Abby Mallett, and a series of the best gift guides from Glynn Connolly of Oh So Gifted, and a DIY wrapping paper tutorial from Suzonne Stirling. The magazine is officially on sale next Friday but you can  grab an early copy here with 20% off using code Joy2420. (The presale discount is good until next Friday soโ€ฆ thereโ€™s no time to waste!) โ€ข  Anyone else on the verge of tears all week? If so, the 7 Ways To Love Better, a compilation of some of the most heart wrenching writing from Modern Love will tip us over the edge (she types with tears in her eyes).  (New York Times)

โ€ข  I relish my solitude and Iโ€™m lucky enough to have built a life that cultivates a lot of it.  If you struggle with being alone, hereโ€™s why thereโ€™s so much grace in it:   The Beauty of Being Alone (TIME)

โ€ข  A Case for Shopping at Landโ€™s End.  Friends โ€“ I cannot stress this enough for the bedsheets and towels alone.  (New York Magazine)

โ€ข  Am I slowly turning The Bakehouse into an actual bakery? Of course I am.  Currently saving for this Rofco bread oven and I think I should have this mini speed rack for Thanksgiving. (Pleasant Hill Grain, Amazon)

โ€ข  A few weeks back Deb and I sat on a bench in Tompkins Square Park (which obviously brought this album to mind) and ate very hype-worthy Apollo Bagels.  Deb is one of the easiest and most interesting people to just chat because she has this way of weaving a conversation. And she has opinions about food which โ€“ I love.  If you havenโ€™t yet listened to her podcast The Recipe with Kenji Lopez-Alt โ€“ itโ€™s so fun.  The Caesar Salad episode is one of my favorite recent listens. (Smitten Kitchen, Spotify, Apple Podcasts)

โ€ข  While weโ€™re in podcast land, I was recently on The Ultimate Dish podcast for a lovely chat on baking, blogging, and motorcycles.  I think itโ€™s a fun listen! (Escoffier)

โ€ข  How the WNBA Became the Most Fun, Complicated, and Exciting League in Sports.  And henceforth we shall refer to the NBA (the basketball sport played by very tall men) as the MNBA, and inexplicably enrage men far and wide, mmmkay? (GQ)

โ€ข  Iโ€™ve felt very stuck in the mud these last few weeks.  Call it a rut.  Call it seasonal depression โ€“ call it what you will. I took to The Internet to ask for advice and the nugget that resonated most soundly was the idea of slowing down and noticing.  I realized I was doing neither. A long evening walk with the dog just to notice is slowly working my brain free of its knots.  Noticing is the gateway to awe and Awe Can Do Wonders For Your Well Being. (Self)

โ€ข  Why Movie Theater Popcorn Tastes So Good โ€“ we all know this canโ€™t be great news but the idea of butter-flavored salt makes my tastebuds perk up.  (Mental Floss)

โ€ข  In very cute, non-essential news: Mushroom Butter Storage Crock should be on our counters, right? (Amazon)

โ€ข  Iโ€™ve seen this Invisible Apple Cake making the rounds on the world wide web this apple season and Iโ€™m intrigued! (Serious Eats)

โ€ข  As you very well know, itโ€™s candy corn season and I take this month of candy corn fandom very seriously.  First of all โ€“ thereโ€™s a right and wrong way to eat candy corn. Hereโ€™s the right way.  Related, highly recommend making these soft and stretchy Candy Corn and Salted Peanut Rice Krispie Treats.  (Instagram, Joy the Baker)

โ€ข  A very cozy Chicken and Biscuit Pot Pie if you need a Sunday supper idea.  (Joy the Baker)

โ€ข  Song on repeat this week, this very sweet version of Our House with Graham Nash and Joni Mitchell. (Spotify)

My love to you, friends!

  1. I went to a book signing with you and Deb in NYC years ago. Something about knowing that you two are still in touch is so wholesome and heartwarming!

  2. Sounds odd maybe b of years backโ€ฆa ut I am suoer envious of your ongoing house rehab.
Stripping walpare csn be oh so satisfying, if one tackles it not as a chore but as a preveiw to a future reveal.
I purchase a 1933 bungalow a number of year agoโ€ฆ referred to by most of my friends as a โ€œdumpโ€. It was a piece of work, both inside and out but I throughly enjoyed every moment of renovation..from stripping, sanding and refinishing the hardwood floors by handโ€ฆno funds fo a professionalโ€ฆto stripping, sanding and painting the entire exterior.
In another life, I would have been a house flipperโ€ฆof that I am sure.
I look forward to seeing your renovations. I have no doubt you have an abundance of creative and lovely ideas.

    1. In another life I would have been a general contractor. :) Iโ€™ll definitely share more renovations as they come! It is both a chore and really satisfying sweet work. If only I had all the time and money in the world.

  3. Woo-eee, I am *really* looking forward to the photos from your Thanksgiving house party. Itโ€™s your family PLUS Willโ€™s, right? I hope they all bring their dogs, too!

    You are one brave woman.

  4. I am a huge fan of Kenji and have been binging The Recipe with Deb and Kenji lately. I was feeling really unsettled one morning at work and listened to them talk at length about grilled chicken and BLTs to soothe my rumpled spirit. Totally worth the listen.

  5. Yesssss! Canโ€™t wait for the magazine to arrive. Just ordered! Iโ€™m hosting my first big Thanksgiving this year (25 people) in my new (& first!) house. At age 45 this feels long overdue but Iโ€™m excited!

  6. Have you read either of Katherine Mayโ€™s books, โ€œWinteringโ€ (about letting yourself slow down in the winter months) or โ€œAwakeningโ€ (about cultivating awe)?

  7. Happy Sunday and Happy Thanksgiving, Joy! If you are feeling like Thanksgiving is tomorrow you are correct-at least in Canada. Happy Thanksgiving from an American in Canada who cannot get used to Thanksgiving before Halloween. There is something so wrong about the order. Always love reading LIBS and following your adventures. Enjoy the time you have with your family.
