This is my Dance Like Nobody Is Watching Sandwich.
I’ve been pretty humble on my blog up until this point, but it’s time I tell you something: ย I’m an uh-mazing dancer. ย (This is a bald-faced LIE!)
In my dreams, I’m an amazing dancer. ย In reality I’m a whole lotta elbows on the dance floor. ย Things get real arm-y. ย I also have this butt move that I’m pretty sure is flawless… but I refuse to bust that move in any sort of close proximity to a mirror. ย I fear I may be sadly mistaken.
I dance like nobody is watching because on a dance floor, no one is watching! ย Everyone is too consumed with their own possibly embarrassing butt move to be concerned with me, their elbow-y neighbor.
I’d like to take this moment to kindly suggest that we also eat like nobody is watching
Maybe that means putting peanut butter and sweet pickles on the same sandwich. ย Go on… I dare ya.
I am not pregnant. ย You can put that out of your mind here and now.
I am a little crazy. ย You can keep that in your mind here and now.
I topped super-seeded whole grain bread with all-natural peanut butter. ย I layered a mega amount of bread and butter pickles over the peanut butter and drizzled the whole madness with pure maple syrup.
How can this possibly be edible?
Oooh goodness… it’s like the taste bud fairies did an ugly backflip and blessed this combination.
The peanut butter is our earthy base flavor. ย The pickles are a combination of sweet and tart so they know how to play nice with base flavors. ย Maple syrup compliments the saltiness of the peanut butter and pickles and…. you’re still looking at me like I’m crazy.
I get it. ย I’m weird. ย You’re either on the awkward-elbow-dance-train, or you’re not.
I can feel you trying to brain-taste this combination. ย I can feel your curiosity. ย Give this sandwich a try!
Oh… I should tell you now that me and your great aunt Mary are the only two people on the planet that like bread and butter pickles. ย If you’re scared to buy a jar of your own, just go to her house for a quick visit. ย Make her a sandwich too. ย She’ll be into it. ย Trust me. ย Your great aunt Mary and I know what’s up.
What’s that? ย You want to go with dill pickles!? ย I respect your tenacity. ย Get up with the get down.
Peanut Butter and Pickle Sandwich
makes 1 sandwich
2 slices whole grain bread (extra yummy with seeded bread)
3 to 4 tablespoons all-natural peanut butter
6 to 8 slices bread and butter pickles
1 tablespoon pure maple syrup.
Spread each slice of bread with peanut butter. ย Top the peanut butter with pickles. ย Drizzle maple syrup over the pickles. ย Smash on the other slice of bread, peanut butter side down. ย You didn’t really need these directions to make a sandwich…. but this is just the sort of thing we do. ย

I have eaten this all my life. Sometimes I add jelly to jazz it up. I’m still trying to get my kids to taste this delicious sammy.
I just LOVE bread and butter pickles–the sweet, tangy and crunchy all in one bite–and PB sandwiches.
I’ve tried numerous variations: with mayo, with yellow mustard, with cheddar. Today, I toasted my PBP and cheddar in the oven. Yum…the melty goodness of the cheese blended beautifully with the warm PB and the crispy bread. It just hit the spot. It’s good, too, with thin slices of apples added :) !
MY FAMILY THINKS IM CRAZY —- I’VE EATEN PB, AM CHEESE, AND YELLOW MUSTARD SANDWICHES FOR YEARS! LOVE THEM! GLAD TO SEE SOMEONE ELSE ENJOYS THEM TOO.
FORGOT SOMETHING — THE COMBINATION IS REALLY GOOD ON SEEDED RYE OR EXTRA SOURDOUGH BREAD.
Not so weird! I love sweet gherkins drizzled with tahini and kosher salt. Sweet, nutty, crunchy, and juicy…winning combination!
Been eating this sandwich for 84 years . Thanks to my mother .
Carol Brooks
I feel this sandwich is going to be really good and I want to try it but it has to be done just right. The problem is I live in the UK where we don’t have anything called bread and butter pickles or even dill pickles. We have gherkins, cornichons, and in my search for the perfect pickle I found (and bought) pickled cucumbers the other day. I’m not sure this is going to be right so I’ll have to keep experimenting with the pickles available here.
Oops not a query, a definite hearty suggestion ?
Yes! And the brands of Pickles and PB and bread matter! If the pickles are limp its no good ;)
Absolutely correct!
Peanut Butter, Homemade Sweet Pickles and Dukes Mayo has been a standard in my family for almost 100 years!
I know it’s a little unusual but try it before you say something nasty.
Oh my! I have never tried it with maple syrup but peanut butter and sweet pickles is the best!
Ok – I said “No way is this good!” I was DEAD wrong! I should have known better, Joy NEVER makes anything nasty. This is outstanding and my new ‘go to’ lunch. Thank you!!
Is everyone here stoned? I’m pregnant and this sound revolting! (P.s. I LOVE peanut butter, dill pickles AND bread & butter pickles!)
Sooo…there’s a burger chain called Killer Burger ( not sure if they’re in NOLA), but they have a peanut butter pickle bacon burger that is amazeballs. Like for reals. They use dill pickle slices, but I’d be all over the B&B.
This is totally brilliant! I was just saying to my sweetheart Eric last night that pickles and peanut butter would make a perfect sandwich combination. He was doubtful, but now I have proof that it’s not just my crazy pants idea. Thanks for posting!
I need this. Now.
Yum. That bread looks delicious. could you tell me what brand or recipe it is…YUM
If you haven’t tried peanut butter and onion sandwiches you are missing a gourmet delight. Just slice an onion thinly, place slices on top of the PB in your sandwich and sprinkly with a minimum of salt. Really, just a few grains.
Great!
I see your crazy and I raise you a dash of sriracha.
No joke… the heat just ups everything else. Boom! My kind of heaven on toast.
Dear Joy: I am a peanutbutter lover since I can remember. My favorite is peanutbutter and jelly
with scrapple, bacon, and sausage links or patties, sometimes both. My brother thinks I am weird and asked me one day, “Who’s child are you?” I don’t care, I’m 50 years old and I’m still standing
and glad to be here. I came across your website looking through other cooking websites and I fell in love with your recipe for peanutbutter and bread and butter pickles and I am going to try it. I’m not afraid to try anything that’s good for me except okra; I know what it looks like, can’t put it past me, don’t try! I will let you know of my new culinary discovery! Here’s to peanutbutter, YEAH!!!
I love bread and butter pickles. Not a habit anyone else in my family shares ( so the jar is all mine….yea). I’m sitting in a train station pondering your suggested sandwich. I read awhile, people watch a while, but my mind keeps cycling back to it. The next time I find myself alone at home, I will try your combo and do the solo dance!!
This is an old post, but I recently discovered the pickle/nut butter combination myself! My favorite is sunflower seed butter and dill pickles. SO GOOD!
I have found my tribe! My variation on the theme is: toasted bread, worcestershire sauce sprinkled liberally all over, butter AND peanut butter, cocktail gherkins and black pepper. I eat this about once a week, usually for breakfast. Yum! Love your blog xx
Haha, this whole post made me laugh out loud… what a wonderful comic relief to my day! Not sure about this combo, but I’m willing to give it a try… even to just satisfy my curiosity. Well done!
The photos are just amazing!
My husband is 76 years old and his mother packed him peanut butter and dill pickle sandwiches in his brown paper lunch bag when he was in school from 1944-1956! He has only succeeded in getting one of his grandchildren to try it—and she is the one who sent us your blog!!!
I haven’t tried pickled peanut butter sandwiches but this one is worth a try :) :) :)
Oh how I love peanut butter sandwiches! Great post :) :)
It’s so strange I have to try it! I’m normally pretty good at imagining weird flavors and being able to pre-determine what it might taste like. Not so much here. I’m just going to have to try it. I’ll let you know what i think!
Enter Famous Dave’s spicy pickles or work your way up to his devil’s spit pickles…yum!
This was my Dad’s go-to sandwich. Great memories eating these as a kid. PB and DILL pickles, that is. :)
I literally had to re-check the date to see if this was an April 1st posting.
It was not. I will not be trying, I cannot bring myself to do so.
I can’t believe I didn’t comment when this recipe was first posted! I know I read it cuz I grew up on peanut butter and sweet pickle sandwiches! Sometimes we’d make a grilled cheddar cheese with peanut butter and sweet pickles. I love bread and butter pickles, too. Your recipes rock!
I grew up on peanut butter, dill pickle and miracle whip sandwiches! Yum! …on fresh bread of course! Is this a New England combo?
This sandwich was assembled and in my mouth before I finished reading this post….. Pb&P is a long time favorite. The addition of maple syrup is a game changer. Thanks for elevating this underdog of the Sammie world.
“I can feel you trying to brain-taste this combination” haha. this made me laugh out loud. I was totally doing this!
This sandwich changed my life. How did I live without it for so long! THANK YOU. But, I must tell you that I made a discovery today – I discovered something I may like more than this sandwich. Perhaps this is old news to a culinary genius like yourself, but if not, I would urge you to try the glory that is Peanut Butter and Pickle PANCAKES. SO. SO. GOOD. In other words, pancakes layered with pickles, PB, and maple syrup.
Thank you for sharing your heart and mind here. Beautiful and inspiring on multiple levels. Looking forward to reading more of your culinary and non-culinary life adventures. Basically, you ROCK.
For me it is pb and dill pickles.
It adds salty crunch and keeps any peanut butter from sticking in your mouth!
This sandwich is my family favorite with a slight twist… no maple syrup… instead… crisp, but not overcooked, bacon. Yum!
Hi Joy!
I know this has nothing to do with your eat-like-nobody-sees-you sandwich, but since I just got your book I wanted to say thank you!
Thanks so much for making the world of butter and sugar even more colorful! I love your book and I am Oh so excited to trying out every single recipe out of it!
Oh now I remember why I wanted to post this here- have you had honey pepper Tartines before? I really need to know. Cos if not, I could imagine you’d like it. And don’t forget the butter of course :)
I grew up eating peanut butter and pickle (sweet or dill) sandwiches as well as peanut butter and tomato, peanut butter and lettuce, etc. My kids grew up eating this way too. Everyone tells us we’re weird, but we don’t care — we love it!!
I LOVE pb & pickle sandwiches! Ilike them with dill pickles. My friend introduced me to them a few years back. Most pepper thought it was weird/gross. Glad I’m not alone!
oops, I meant most people, not most peppers.
Oh, Hell YES! I’d never come across this before, but it works, it works it works! Ate as written, gorgeous!
No jelly for me!! I’ve eaten peanut butter and pickles sandwiches since I was a little girl. Dad’s was raised on them. Usually they were dill pickles; sweet at times though. But, my very favorite combo is peanut butter and tomato! Yum! People usually cringe at the thought. โฆToo bad!! They’re missing a wonderful and tasty experience!!!
I learned to eat peanut butter/dill pickle sandwiches from my mom. I like bread and butter pickles, but hadn’t thought to use them- I like the dill better in this case. People still think I’m weird when I suggest pb & dill pickle sandwiches :)
oh my, this is one of my gotta have’s since i was a kid, always had on white bread peanut butter and gerkins sweet pickles, i can only imagine how this one taste..see we are not all freaks. Thats like grilled peaunut butter and marshmellow fluff…GRILLED.
Brilliant! Where has this sandwich been all my life?
I just love this post on the peanut butter and pickle sandwich. Brings up childhood memories and when I am craving something I usually turn to this. One difference…we used dill pickles but I am anxious to try this recipe. Thanks!!!
I thought I was utterly alone. Wow! This was a favorite when I was a kid. Well that and mustard sandwiches. Whoops! Did I say that out loud? Okay, so I’m kind of a vinegar geek. Thanks Joy!
Very nice recipe….am gonna try this
Oh wow, I’m new to your site and the photo’s are amazing and inspiring. Love this article, i’m actually a huge peanutbutter fan and I eat it with chocolate sprinkels, or with honey, or with sugar, or jelly… or marshmallows… but pickles? It’s new to me and i’m gonna try it out RIGHT NOW :D xx (sadly I dont have maple syrup… i have a similar syrup though…)
Chili, peanut butter on saltines, and little midget sweet pickles. Oh, the yum!!! and I’m not pregnant either.
My hubby eats peanut butter & mint jelly sandwiches. Weird, yes?
I think I just died and went to heaven!
I live in the uk, where can I buy sweet pickles? We have pickled gherkins but they aren’t sweet! Like the kind you get in a burger at McDondalds? Would like to give it a try sounds good for my taste buds.
Many thanks
Jane :-)
oh. yes. converted i am. this ROCKS and i can’t stop making them.
i just have to try this. oh my goodness. I don’t even think we have pickles, but we have relish and thats essentially like pickle jam right? haha! Oh man, I used to eat peanut butter and butter sandwiches, and ketchup sandwiches (white bread, thick mayo on one slice, thick ketchup on the other, and a slice of bologna. Wholesome meal right there.)
I totally really was trying to brain-taste it!!!!! And right again about the b&b pickles, clever Joy.
Happy bday too;)
Made it. Ate it. Loved it.
I used to make a sandwich like this but instead of maple syrup, I used to pile blanched veggies over the peanut butter topped bread with dill pickles. I liked to add cauliflower, broccoli, carrot, red radish or daikon radish, sometimes bell peppers. I had to eat it open faced because I put so many veggies on the bread. I also liked it with cashew butter. Sometimes I would replace the dill pickles with naturally fermented sauerkraut.
I don’t eat wheat or gluten any longer. I know there are gluten free loaf breads and I rarely eat grains. Still, I just might have to try this again with a gluten free, grain free bread recipe I found in a book I’m going to review (Primal Cravings).
Your food photos are absolutely mouth wateringly beautful!
Chef Rachel
My first thought when I saw this?
I need to make it…and add bacon.
Yep. Looks like this is going to be dinner tonight!
Just had my first bite of a PB and Pickle sandwich… YUMM!
thanks for the introduction!!
If u like this…which I will so so try…..our family likes salami peanut butter sandwiches….I actually crave them once in a while.
:)
Sounds interesting. I must say, I am intrigued.
I have no idea why this looks so amazing to me…

http://www.queenofmayhem.com
This sounds horrific. Frightening in fact. And yet, my mouth was watering and I am curiously intrigued. This is officially on my “must try” list!
I was amazed to discover that there are actually people who dislike this combination. I mean, how? :) Definitely a vote for dill pickle usage from me! Also, add thick ruffle style potato chips all smashed between toasted slices of seeded rye. My most favorite late-night high school snack!
Wow, I would absolutely eat this! My Dad used to make Peanut Butter and Cheddar cheese Sandwiches, which, I must say, are divine, but I love the pickle idea. Nicely done!
I’ve been eating pb and pickle sandwiches for over 30 years! My husband had been eating them as a kid. For something even better, add some sliced banana! Yep, to the pb and pickel( and the pickles have got to be dill)
This is I think my favorite post of yours…the type of bread you used totally makes it. You rock.
a friend just gave me a jar of homemade bread and butter pickles (for real, I think her aunt made them…!), how fortuitous! I was wary at first, but you are so right, this combo is wonderful. Sort of like a weird PB&J… I think I’ll have another right now! Thanks!
So interesting. I’m a big PB fan and I’m obsessed with pickles (my grandpa even made them!) but I’ve never tried them together. I guess I’ll have to now! Thanks for the inspiration!
Oh my goodness. I don’t think my pregnant wife would even touch this! But as for me, I’m trusting your judgement and going for it!
“I can feel you trying to brain-taste this combination.” Exactly. Then I read all the comments. I promise I’ll give it a try. Even if it scares me a little. he he!
Not only do I know what Bread and Butter pickles are, AND eat them, I MAKE my own bread and butter pickles. They supposedly blow people’s mind, and I have had family members fight over them, hide them under coats, and under babies.
Yes I am serious. Bread and Butter Pickles are where it’s at!
And I think this sandwich might be too!
WOW! I LOVE PEANUT BUTTER and PICKLES! Thanks for sharing!
Bubbie’s B&B pickles are DA BOMB! so are these from sechler’s
https://sl6dev.mailordercentral.com/sechlers/16-oz-Raisin-Crispies/productinfo/RC
i will be trying this with almond butter and GF bread (allergy girl here). nom!
THANK YOU!!!!!!
These were a family favorite in my house growing up. My uncle used to stop by my Grandma’s house on his lunch breaks and she would always make him a peanut butter and dill pickle sandwich.
I make this at work sometimes when I’m feeling blah and catch some flack. After reading the other comments it seems like others have, as well. Maybe we need to form a PB&P support group?
I LOVEEEEE Bread and butter pickles. (so much better than dill — to sour for a sweet tooth like myself). I had no idea that they were unpopular!!
I’m having one of these sandwiches today :) I love peanutbutter and fresh tomoto sandwiches, weird I know but they are ‘awesome’ :) Thanks so much for the sandwich yummmmy.
this sounds just quirky enough to be good – and I love bread and butter pickles — maybe I am Aunt Mary
I can’t tell you how excited I am that you posted this recipe. I’ve been eating PB and pickles since I was 10ish and never had the guts to post it on my blog because everyone I know won’t even try them! The salty, creamy vinegary and peanutty taste just blows my mind. Thank you so much! ;)
This sandwich sounds so interesting. I would have never guessesd to put PB and pickles together. Genius!
This is a first for me LOL!
I was skeptical when I saw the e-mail header, but reading so many people’s post about how they love PB & P’s I feel I will have to give this combo a try. I am not known for not being excessively normal at the best of times, so this is right up my street!
Yum…I have been eating this since I was a kid! I still remember thinking what a weird combo peanut butter and pickles seemed like. But after I sandwiched together the gooeyness of peanut butter and the crunchy, sweet/sour sliced pickles….it was like match made in heaven. So much better than the boring PB&J! I also love peanut butter and sliced bananas.
In our family it’s always been peanut butter, mayo, and dill pickles. It was my mom’s favorite. Yum!
Haha! You know, I actually think that this is probably weirdly satisfying. And you can add me to the “Bread and Butter Pickle Lovers’ list!
What?!? I love bread-and-butter pickles, too! I make my own:
https://www.foxeslovelemons.com/2013/04/fried-chicken-sandwiches-with-pickle.html
I know I already commented, but I had this for lunch today after thinking about it CONSTANTLY since you posted it and it was really super yum-town!! Thanks Joy!!
Yummy, Joy. YUMMY.
Photos are awesomely drool worthy. Much praise!
Hard to believe that I actually want this now, but I do.
I love pickles on grilled cheese, so why not peanut butter? Salt and sweet. Making it for lunch tomorrow! That’s a great looking bread!
Genius!!
Seriously, add a little bit of chipped deli ham and you’ve got an even better sandwich! :)
um you should probably take a pregnancy test…just in case haha jk! Ill have to try this sometime, or dare someone else to!
Joy — my friends and I were discussing (this weekend at an engagement party) how you write in a way that makes us feel like we’re your friends, yet we’ve never met you. We want to meet you! And bake like you. :) Thanks for writing and sharing your talents with us.
I think i’m into it too! i’m going to try it! I know I already love all the components (including bread and butter pickles!).
I am glad you posted this Joy, because no one EVER talks about this combo!! However I would HIGHLY SUGGEST you try this again with DILL PICKLES and no maple syrup!! The saltiness and crunchy pickles with the rich peanut butter is amazing. I don’t like sweet pickles at all so I’ve never tried making the sandwich with (with the maple syrup and everything) but I pretty much grew up on PB/dill pickle sandwiches…. one of those beautiful combinations that no one thinks of :)
I grew up with a lot of weird combos in the family – my dad loves cheddar cheese or beef gravy with his apple pie, my mom likes her bananas and soy sauce, or corned beef with rice and pickled okra, or pepperoncini (these are actually good, btw), and I like peanut butter and dill pickle with granola sprinkles in a flour tortilla. Different dances goin’ on, but I was excited to see you validate the peanut butter pickle combo. I also have a friend that used to get a pickle flavored shaved ice treat in Texas. I will give your sweet pickles a go! :)
Peanut butter and pickle is a particular combination..
Not Only Sugar
I love bread & butter pickles!! Now, I’m not sure about this sandwich, but, you’ve never steered me wrong before. So, I think I’m game to try it.
PB and pickles? I need to have this now!!
Bread and Butter pickles are the bomb dot com.
I’m with you on the awkward elbow dance, but I don’t think I can get behind you on this peanut butter pickle thing. The maple syrup on the other hand, that sounds delicious with peanut butter :)
ha omg i love everything about this post! from the crazy, yet intriguing pb/pickle combo to the totally relatable dancing confession! LOVE IT!!
Ha! This post is amazing, Joy. In particular this sentence: “It’s like the taste bud fairies did an ugly backflip and blessed this combination.”
I am not a lover of pickles but I am a lover of your blog–thanks for being awesome.
Mmmmmm, I feel in love with pickles when I was pregnant. Maybe I still have some of the hormones kicking around because this sandwich looks like it tastes AMAZING!
I”m appreciate a lot, your idea is super good, now i have a new dessert!!!! i never try this kind of bread but i’m going to try, do you think is good idea if a put just regular pickles? or can i found sweet pickles at the store? well see you later.
I am definitely intrigued!
I grew up on pb and pickles! Not this fancy stuff, but white bread and dills. Thank you for showing me I’m not alone!
I must admit, this scares me. Not as much as the peanut butter and Cheese Whiz sammies my grandma eats, but still, scary.
I love peanut butter and pickle sandwiches, though I’ve only made them with dills before. Never thought to add an extra sweet touch. I might have to give that a try.
I mean, yes? Yes, please? Yes!!
Mmm! Good memories! I have digestive tract paralysis now, but when I was able to eat, I LOVED peanut butter and pickle sandwiches! Delicious!
I’m just going to have to imagine this one–I don’t like pickles in any situation, but it reminds me of my dad’s weird pb sandwiches. I didn’t attempt anything gross like lunch meat or sardines and pb, but he did finally get me to try it with tomatoes. They have to be really ripe, juicy summer tomatoes, but it is like an alternate pbj–gooey and sort of sweet.
I may have to try this tomorrow for lunch! I can’t believe so many people are raving about it.
Oh Joy… you lost me at pickles + pb. I just can’t get down with this funky, funky town.
that said, my elbows and butt moves would rival yours any day of the week. this is not an opinion as much as it is a fact.
in closing, my weird-o move was eating 7-11 slurpees with those 3d doritos that were super popular in the 90s. i’d hollow them out, scoop a bit of whatever flavor combo of slurpee I had, and fill the hole with the slush and eat them like bon bons. best. thing. ever.
You may be insane, but i may like you just enough to give these a shot! you haven’t steered us wrong yet :)
peanut butter and tomato. that is all. well that and toasted bread.
My best friend has been eating these sandwiches for as long as I’ve known her (we met when we were 12). You just validated her whole life with this post.
O.M.G. i can’t even believe you made these sandwiches. i’ve been eating these since i was a little kid! we kept them pretty simple, so only peanut butter and dill pickles, but these look interesting, too! i’m sure you’ll be more successful at getting people to at least try this combination than i ever was. yay joy!!
HOLY FREAKING COW, I thought I was the only person on the planet who ate these. But maple syrup? That’s flippin genius.
This is what my granddad makes when my grandmom isn’t home to cook. I’ve never tried it, but I guess I’ll have to now!
OK, this sounds so freaky that I think I have to try it. You can also count you, your Aunt Mary and me as the 3 people who love bread and butter pickles. Trader Joe’s sells a great jar of them too. Best when cold in my opinion. :)
My mom introduced me to pb & dill pickle sandwiches when I was a kid. Haven’t had them in years. Loved them
https://www.buzzfeed.com/micaela/temp-title-1368294594257-almh
It’s official: I love you! Ok maybe I love your blog, because I don’t actually know you. But Lady: you are the best!
I forgot about these sandwiches… used to eat them as a teenager and in college. These and sandwiches made with pickles, sliced tomato, cheddar cheese and potato chips were favorites!
We go by the rule of at least trying things once – we teach our children the same thing: they can’t say they don’t like certain food unless they try it. So, while I confess that my taste buds were not sure to go with the input they were getting from my brain, while I was reading you’re Peanut Butter and Pickle sandwich post, I (we) will try it!
A dance like nobody’s watching sandwich? I’m going to have to try it!
Joy,
I absolutely love peanut butter and pickle sandwiches! And yours looks amazing!
Congrats on Saveur award! AndI’ve loved PB+P sandwiches since Sue Grafton started the Alphabet Series…. Have you ever tried PB+sharp chedder?
I loooove bread and butter pickles. Ditto peanut butter & grainy bread… But altogether… Ummmm… I want to … I really want to……. But no…
..
I love bread and butter pickles! And peanut butter. And my brain totally was trying to figure out this combination you’ve got going on. I don’t know if I’ll be trying it but I commend your creativity! :)
I grew up eating peanut butter with bread and butter pickle sandwiches, my Mom used to pack them in my school lunch and I would enjoy every last bite, even with the disgusted looks I’d get from my classmates. Maple syrup is something new I’ll have to try. My add-on condiment is Sriracha for a Thai twist on an old favorite. YUM!
My grandmother made peanut butter, mayonnaise, mustard, and pickle relish sandwiches, so this is just a probably more healthier and less Depression-era-oriented version. Sounds incredible! I love pickles in tuna fish and grilled cheese (any cheese) sandwiches, so this is a heavenly addition to my repetoire.
I am pregnant and i CANT wait to try this. Tonight is the night.
I am waaaay into peanut butter with jelly and tomato sandwhichs… the tomato adds extra texture to the jelly without really any tomato flavor. i love pickles too!! can you just come cook me every meal Joy? i’m pretty sure i’d eat it all!!!!
I believe it. A favorite combo of mine is peanut butter and cucumber.
Go get yourself some Bubbies brand bread and butter pickles. I dare you not to eat the whole jar in one day. Usually the only thing that prevents me from doing that is they are kind of expensive. I love pickles!!
This looks super yummy! I’m going to try this with toasted bread!
YES!! My dad and I have been eating peanut butter & pickle sandwiches my whole life — I looooooove them. Dill pickles all the way. I now feel so completely justified in my life -slash- sandwich choices. Thanks, Joy!
Good for you!! This sounds terrible to me :) And I’m even pregnant! ;)
My grandfather used to eat potato and cheese pierogi with a side of sour cream and syrup drizzled all over. I do too – it tastes good and reminds me of him. People find it odd but it’s yum!
I have ALWAYS LOVED a Grilled Peanut Butter and Dilled Pickel sandwich. I grew up calling it “Dots Suprise”. My kids have always thought I am รผber weird for loving this sandwich. I was thrilled to see this blog post. Your version is different than mine, and perhaps a little to sweet foe my taste, but cheers to my pb & pickle friend!

peanut butter, dill pickles, and shredded cheddar on a rice cake was my jam in middle school!
PB + cuke sandwich is an old favorite, passed down by my grandfather! Pickles + PB weirds me out a little, but I might try it anyway.
You, my great aunt Kate, and me are the only 3 people who like b&b pickles. I take mine with some shichimi togarashi sprinkled on. Try it. And then dance. Cheers!
Love that sandwich – ate them often when I was a kid. But I also added Fritos. A bit of salty crunch with the sweet pickles and creamy peanut butter. Yum!
So werid! But I love it!! I used to eat PB and cheese sandwiches all the time when I was young so this makes me kinda curious to try your pickle version. :)
I love pickles and I love peanut butter have never had them together! I have to try this one!
Oh Joy, my most famous dance move has been known as “the locust move”. Can you imagine?! Yes, I do dance as nobody is watching :-)
Bread + butter pickles RIDE OR DIE!! I’m not even sure what that means except I LOOOOOOVE them with all of the different colored emoji hearts. I’m a little bit scared and a lot curious about this sandwich.
Well I love a PB&J sandwich with a pickle on the side washed down with a glass of milk, so I’m sure I’ll like this! Thanks for the idea!
I’m pregnant and that seriously made me nauseous. Doesn’t take much these days. However, when I read that it was bread and butter pickles I really wanted one (minus the peanut butter). Maybe with some ice cream???.
I love bread and butter pickles. My grandma made AMAZING refrigerator bread and butter pickles. Those were the first pickles I ate and to this day I still can’t stand dill pickles!
I enjoy a peanut butter and green olive sandwich myself. I will have to try this combination too.
I was totally trying to brain-taste the combo and loved that you called me out on it. I may not try it but I appreciate you thinking outside of the box. We need more thinkers and doers like you Joy…!
Dancing: Lots of elbow action and tongue out. Happens.
Sandwiching: I’ll eat anything on a wich.
My grandfather’s favorite sandwich was peanut butter and onion. So peanut butter and pickles doesn’t sound weird to me at all.
xoxo
I LOVE bread and butter pickles. And, yes, I have made (and love) peanut butter and pickle sandwiches. It’s a stellar combination. I’ve never thought of adding maple syrup, but that’s a great idea!
a) I’m not quite sure about this but if someone made a PB & P I’d try it because you generally make things that are quite lovely so I don’t think you’re trying to trick us with this one (right?)
b)Only you can make a peanut butter and PICKLE sandwich so gosh darn photogenic. Haha.
If you’re not pregnant then you must spend your Sunday afternoons listening to Willie Nelson and watching Dazed and Confused :)
In all seriousness though, you have definitely peaked my curiosity. I’m going to have to dive head first into this one!
did you just call me a pot head?
I love this flavor combo! There’s a food cart here in Portland that makes crazy peanut butter & jelly sandwiches. They make a similar one to this but use white pepper, which gives it a nice spiciness, and then grill it… its amazing!
Oh dear, I’m a bit afraid of this flavor combination. Can I just tell you, though, that my secret after-school snack through elementary school was a cheese and marshmallow sandwich? Bread, miniature marshmallows, pre-sliced processed cheese, microwaved until melty, then folded in half. I made this in secret when no one was home because I knew this was something I shouldn’t be seen eating, but I loved it!
i really like peanut butter and sweet pickle sandwiches, and am glad you’ve posted about this combination. it makes for a really satisfying meal, and i discovered it when i read about it a while ago in the NYTimes. the perfect side for me is freshly made popcorn (drizzled with olive oil). they’re awesome together!!
haha i am totally echoing everyone else who is getting on the wagon but opting for the dill pickles. all the way baby. been getting made fun of that combo since ’91. there is a burger at a local place here in st. paul called the jiffy burger (burger, pepper jack, pb, mayo, bacon, pickles). extra points if you make it into a juicy lucy. it’s like decadence in real form. i strongly urge you to try your own version….
I’ve never tried this, and now I must. It sounds and looks fabu!
I could get behind this! Nice!
I love peanut butter so much I can’t imagine not liking this sandwich, even though it’s not a combination I’ve ever tried. Peanut butter makes everything taste good!
I’M FLIPPING OUT!
And seriously linking this recipe to my grandparents who is are obviously the most amazing people in existence because they introduced my mom, and then me, to the peanut butter pickle sandwich.
White bread, Skippy, pickles. That’s how it went down in third grade.
I absolutely love you for this. You have released and validated my inner child to dance and be sticky fingered!!!
Yum! My mom used to make a version of these tasty treats for my brother and I. She preferred dill pickles. I was always a bread and butter pickle girl. Thank you for the validation ;) You have taken shall we say a “trailer trash” delight and really made it gourmet. So fun!
peanut butter pickle is my ABSOLUTE favorite sandwich. I use dill and “fake” peanut butter on whole wheat toast. Thank you for spreading the word, Joy!
i have to tell you… i secretly LOVE ‘fake’ peanut butter.
I’ve heard of this combination, but I’ve never tried it!
Maybe I’ll have to…

Making Life’s Lemons
I’ve been eating these since I was a kid! I make mine with dill pickles though, no bread and butter pickles in my momma’s house!
Funny – I don’t use the syrup, but PB and bread & butter picke sandwich is a favorite. Of course, my husband thinks I’m weird.
My dad (who in my eyes is never wrong) has a soft spot for PB and Swiss cheese (sometimes with a drizzle of honey) on totally this type of bread.
I thought he’d lost his mind until I tasted one. I’m going to have to have one soon. Thanks for the memory which brought a big smile. I’ll have to try your version too! ;)
pb + swiss. i’m crazy enough to try it!
I totally used to take this sandwich for lunch when I was eight years old. PB and J is great but its nothing compared to PB and P!! Thanks for bringing back the oldies but goodies. :)
This is bananas. Thanks for sharing!
My highschool English teacher swore that peanut butter and pickle sandwiches were the best and I thought she was C-R-A-Z-Y! But I couldn’t stop thinking about it when I got home so I made myself one. It was actually pretty good! Such a weird combination…

My Girl Scout leader introduced me to dill pickle, peanut butter
Sandwiches 55 years ago. BUT our version is not so sophisticated! Lol
If there is such a thing in regards to PB & pickles. We do not do the syrup (but Ill give it a try). I use Dave’s Spicy Pickles, Peanut Butter and really good mayonnaise! Better than dessert!
whoa!
Me and my best friend used to eat these all the time when we were in high school! (minus the maple syrup, we hadn’t thought of that!).
SO GOOD!
Girl I love this sandwich and I am totally NOT preggers! ha!
Peanut butter and pickles are my husband’s absolute favorite sandwich ingredients – and his grandfather’s. I don’t understand it personally, but they’d do backflips over it if they could.
I think my equivalent is cottage cheese and avocados, because that makes them both make the same face that I make when they tell me what’s in their sandwiches. :p
i would totally get down with some cottage cheese and avocados!
I wonder what will happen if I make this and eat it in front of my husband. I think he will assume I’ve gone off the pregnant lady deep end for certain!
This is such a fine idea Joy! You don’t need a baby in your belly to want this! Love!
I have recently fallen for the peanut butter pickle sandwich!! The addition of maple syrup is a fabulous idea and a good excuse to have a sandwich for dinner tonight! I also like using these horseradish sweet pickles I get at my farmer’s market. The slight spiciness with the sweet and the creamy peanut butter is fantastic.
horseradish sweet pickles sound bonkers delicious!
I am so on the awkward-elbow-dance-train!
Peanut butter and dill pickles all the way! I got made fun of for bringing those to elementary school for lunch. I haven’t had one in forever … maybe today is the day.
So this sounds really weird. I’ve kind of heard of it before but I seriously think it was someone that was pregnant.
I’m just not sure if I can get behind this sandwich, but I’m willing to try it.

i respect your skepticism.
My eat-like-nobody’s-watching sandwich is peanut butter and mustard, with a dill pickle on the side. My husband thinks I’m nuts, but this genius pairing goes back to my great-grandma. And great-grandma’s are never wrong.
I can’t get down with this sandwich (it’s the bread and butter pickles) but I love that you love it. And I love that you’ve shared it.
mustard! wow!! that sounds nuts… but i’m totally crazy enough to try it.
I’ve been eating PBJ and Dill Pickle sandwiches since I was 6. It was the only way I would eat a PBJ growing up because I absolutely hated peanut butter. It was sweet, sour, and slightly peanut-y. I think I’ll have to give your combination a try sometime.
I grew up eating peanut butter and sweet pickle sandwiches! ??them! My parents were from near New Orleans. My mom loved them too. Thanks for the reminder!
adding pickles to things is like adding magic.
Speaking of adding pickles to something… You should try a shot of Jameson’s with a chaser of pickle juice. I tried that on my birthday at the recommendation of an Irish waitress, and now it’s my favorite drink.
I’ve had that shot and I thought it would be weird but since I like pickles I gave it a go and I did like it! In fact a group of us did it and we all liked it :)
Another bread and butter pickle lover here. Mine even won first place in their section at the county fair a couple years ago. Also, as a kid, I used to eat pb&j with a slice of American cheese in the middle, so it makes sense.
Believe it or not, my sister and I used to ear PB&Pickle sandwiches growing up! But we used dill pickles… The briney pickles with the smooth peanut butter is a combo that can’t quite be matched by anything else. It’s its own kind of perfection…. Just like your dancing. My dancing on the other hand…. I just don’t do it. It’s that bad. Sandwich, yes, dancing, no. :)
I love peanut butter and pepper sandwiches so I’m pretty darn sure I ‘ll love this one! Thanks for sharing!
Peanut butter, fresh sliced tomato and a little garlic is great too – better on toast than in a sandwich. I love bread and butter pickles!
Yeahhhhh… Def a pregnant lady sandwich…
Now, I can totally get down on this. I’ve made my share of weird sandwiches and this would probably top my list once I get me a jar of sweet pickles.
My dad’s guilty pleasure was a peanut and mayonnaise sandwich, and last week, thinking of him, I went there. I embellished it with chili garlic sauce, and with a nod to health I added sliced cucumber. I gotta admit it hit the spot It had the grainy nuttiness of old fashion peanut butter, the richness that only best food brand can provide, salty hotness, and great crunch of cukes. Good on ya Joy, for thinking outside the box, I like the cut of your culinary jib.
“I like the cut of your culinary jib.”
I want this on a Tshirt, pleaseandthankyou.
In my cookbook I included a peanut butter-brie-green apple-caramel sandwich!! So I can totally get on board with the pickles! I love a good, crunchy pickle! And of course…PB!
My father actually does this same combo but with grits. I am now eager to try this, since it seems to work (in my mind that is). Butter pickles are such a pantry staple for our house hold, I do not think a sandwich of any kind would be complete with out it
grits!? this is blowing my mind.
I AM trying to brain taste this, and my neurons just can’t form the connection. Looks like ima have to real-world try this!
My nobody watch me dance sandwich growing up was peanut butter and cheese whiz! Haven’t had it in a while….Thanks for the memories:)
Joy, this looks amazing. I might need to go to the store in the morning and get some pickles. Thank you for such a wonderful meal idea!
Fact: I love bread and butter pickles (and I swear I’m not someone’s Aunt Mary). Another fact, my friends have been known to make fun of me for my love of them. Thank you for reassuring me that there are other 30 somethings with a bread and butter pickle love :) I feel less alone in the universe :)
I’m an 28 year old and I have ALWAYS liked bread and butter pickles, ESPECIALLY when they’re homemade by my mom and I. Check out the Better Homes and Gardens version of them under the Canning section. You can thank me later! ;)
I had to giggle at this when i realized I am really an Aunt Mary (spelled Mari in my case). I LOVE b&b pickles. I have 3 jars of them in the cupboard as we speak! I am going to try this with the white bread i made this week toasted, and I have feshly ground pnut butter. Yum. I love Joy’s mind…I can so relate…just when I was, she throws out the perfect phrase to describe it…brain taste, hahaha!
