Hello friends, good morning! Let’s nod our heads knowing we get another Sunday here together.
I’ve got a record playing this morning: Bill Evans. It sounds like he’s in the room even though he lived his entire life before mine even started. Did you know that Bill Evans named his son Evan? Oh the places a very cursory Google search can take you.
I’m not the only person who had trouble sleeping last week. Apparently it was something about the full moon and the tides and how our bodies are mostly water and the moon gets at us. It’s science? It’s something.
This week has had its storms and sunshine, literally. It’s small successes and short list of pressing problems to solve. I’ve logged more miles running (and actually enjoy it?) and I very much need to call the dentist (but will absolutely procrastinate on that for a bit longer). Life stuff, you too? This weekend I’m driving a few hours outside of New Orleans to canoe in a swamp with Will. Sounds about right. I hope you build something new into your weekend, too.
These are the flowers I’ve lived with this week: very generous, very fragrant, pink roses from the grocery store. This is the offering this week. It assumes you’ve taken in all the newsy news you’ve wanted this week. We’re reaching beyond the news and into our lives together. As always, take only what you need:
I meant to thank you last week. Thank you for telling me to pause on replanting my orchid!

โข Preservation Hall is one of the most beautiful places in New Orleans. A 10000% must visit for music if you’re here. Here’s a podcast interview with its leader Ben Jaffe on taking over his parents’ legendary jazz venue. Ben calls New Orleans the Paris of the United States and I really love that thought. It’s a really beautiful listen from a place so intrinsic to this city. (BBC)

I guess I’ll be into rolls for breakfast pretty soon!!
I love you Joy. I’ve been coming here you. si days for years, and saved this one for a Tuesday as a birthday treat. Thru your words and selections, I feel like I get a glimpse of what a beautiful person you are. Thank you for this practice!
Oh Joy, thank you for the Practice story. It was just what I needed! Also that parenting story is 100% spot on the absolute gospel truth on children.
?? ?? ?? ??
Just chuckled out loud at the end of How to Practice. What a wonderful read! Last year, I read The Dutch House and lived it, so I’ll have to explore more Ann Patchett.
I enjoyed all of these offerings. Thank you for a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
Loving all the lemon and strawberry recipe links..
My husband shared that same parenting article from The Atlantic with me this week (not his usual M.O. either). Really interesting and makes so much sense.
THE PANINI.
I’m dead.
Thank you so much for the”Practice” story…it was wonderful. I wanted the square green serving plate and one of the typewriters.
Beautifully and warmly written.
I look forward to these every Sunday! Thanks for collecting these each week.
Good morning, Joy! I can tell you that after this comment, and after breakfast, I will be cleaning out cupboards, drawers and closets! In January, my MIL passed, and our two daughters were home. So, in my parents pragmatic way, I dove in. I brought out my jewelry box, and offered the jewelry I no longer wore to my girls; the ruby ring ( birth stone) that my parents gave me for my high school graduation (1981!), the ring from college graduation, earrings I no longer wore. At first, the girls were a little creeped-out about it, thinking it was a solemn occasion. I said to them, โWear them now, whenever you want. That way itโs not a sad occasion when you take them from your jewelry box to wear.โ
I am a collector of coffee mugs. I simply love them. My cupboard was groaning under the weight. So, I pulled them down, saved my favorites, and donated the rest, hoping they would become someone elseโs favorite very soon.
Thank you for sharing that story. I passed it along to my family and friends as my Sunday offering.
Preservation Hall is a gem that needs to be treasured. Wonderful listen. Thank you for Julia and Rogerโs jambalaya last week. So delicious! Will be trying your Meyer Lemon bars, as my Meyer lemon tree is heavy with ripe fruit currently. Thank you for your inspirations. Happy canoeing!
