Brown Sugar Roasted Fig Oatmeal

I almost drove straight out of town, just to go-on and get-gone.  Unfortunately, it’s hard to go-on and get-gone without looking dramatic and explaining at least a portion of your crazy brain. Sometimes the long-shower-learn-to-deal is easier to explain than the go-on and get-gone.

I almost drove straight out of town.  Just to go-on and get-gone.  Instead I drove to Clemence’s house for chocolate croissants, doughnuts, and fig picking with Malcolm, Olivia, baby Xavy in his rocking chair… and a chicken.

Sometimes the get-gone is closer to home than you think.  Sometimes you just need a wooden ladder, a fruiting tree, a lovely family, and a chicken in the street.

And oatmeal.

Let’s talk about oatmeal.  Things are most lovely without the fuss.

Ripe figs are my dream.

Topping them with a drizzle of olive oil and brown sugar is just beyond.

They’re roasted in a hot oven while oatmeal is simmered on the stovetop.

Warm oatmeal.  Extra almond milk.  Extra extra brown sugar.  Soft roasted figs.  Mix and swoon.

We’re really just talking about the simplest of indulgences.  Sweet, warm fruit over hearty , creamy granola.  Use this as inspiration.  You can really use any in season fruit that suits your fancy.  Not long ago I made Roasted Strawberry Rice Pudding that nearly sent me over the edge.

Sometimes it’s just a humble dish that provides just the comfort and momentary escape you need.  By ‘you’, I really mean ‘me’… I’m just talking about myself.  You’re probably fine and just need oatmeal for oatmeal’s sake.

Brown Sugar Roasted Fig Oatmeal

8 ripe figs, sliced in half

drizzle olive oil

3 tablespoons brown sugar

1 1/3 cup old-fashioned oatmeal

1 1/2 cup water

pinch of salt

pinch of fresh grated nutmeg

1/2 cup almond milk (or cow’s milk or soy milk), plus more for topping

3 tablespoons brown sugar (for topping the granola)

Place a rack in the upper third of the oven and preheat oven to 400 degrees F.  Place halved figs on baking sheet, drizzle lightly with olive oil and sprinkle with 3 tablespoons brown sugar.  Place in the oven and allow to roast until soft and bubbling, about 8 to 10 minutes.  While the figs roast, make the oatmeal.

In  medium saucepan, bring water to a simmer.  Add oats and salt and stir.  As oats begin to absorb water, add the almond milk.  Cook and stir for about 5 minutes, until oats are cooked thought.  Remove from heat.  Remove figs from the oven.

To serve, place oatmeal in two bowls.  Top with more milk, roasted figs, and brown sugar.  Serve immediately.

I’m a new reader here and I just wanted to say that I completely agree that sometimes a nice shower is in order and something to clear your head.

    On a side note… Not sure if you have heard of the comedian Gary Gulman but he has this hilarious skit about figs and how he only knows them from fig newtons (“I wouldn’t know a fig if it walked through the door. I’d say sorry fig I didn’t recognize you without your cookie covering.”) hahah. You should YouTube that for a laugh.

  3. I´m so happy it´s oatmeal season again! I guess oatmeal isn´t really a seasonal product, but for me oatmeal means embracing autumn and colder mornings that need a warm and hearty breakfast! This seems like the perfect sunday-comfort-food :) Simple, yet fancy and comforting!

  10. I love experimenting with oatmeal! Most people think oatmeal is so plain and boring but it doesn’t have to be. It can be a blank canvas..adding whatever flavors you love to create a warm comforting bowl of awesomeness!

I often just add chopped ripe figs to my oatmeal while it’s cooking…. yes the figs break down to be almost indistinguishable from the oatmeal, but the entire bowl is full of warm, rich gooey flavor from the figs. Just sayin’, in case you’re ever lazy and don’t want to roast the figs separately…

  12. Fresh figs (when they aren’t the sad ones available at some places in Boston) are possibly my favorite fruit. I’ll have to pick some figs up when I get home and can shop at my favorite fruit store!

Your oatmeal looks wonderful with those ripe plump roasted figs. I bet this oatmeal helped…there’s no way it didn’t. :)

  17. I love this fun spin on what *can* be a really boring breakfast. i’ve been eating oatmeal with almond milk for breakfast lately because i was diagnosed with low bone density (almonds = high in calcium!), but i’m always looking for ways to jazz it up!

  18. this sounds so good. since my figs are pretty much dripping their own brown sugar right now, do i need to add more sugar to them or would roasting them with a little olive oil work just fine? of course I will still be topping the oatmeal with a little brown sugar and maybe some salted butter :)
