Hello friends!
Welcome to another Sunday!
This week I’ve been back and forth to Los Angeles for a quick family trip which always jumbles up my week and clouds how I feel about whether I’ve done a dang thing or not. Turns out I likely have done all sorts of productive things and there are likely many more days to keep trying. Family time is important and always pretty precious. My parents and I watched a talking dog movie and cried… all of us. You try watching A Dog’s Purpose without shedding a tear. I think it’s actually impossible.
While I was home in LA my dad made a Chess Pie. It’s something he’s been low-key trying to perfect for months. He wants a creamy texture, lemon nuance, and pale top. He parbaked the crust, cooled the crust, adding the chess pie filling and baked it in a cold oven set to 300 degrees until set. I was skeptical and took a piece of pie to the airport the morning I was headed back to New Orleans. It was absolutely perfect. So velvet smooth. My dad is a wizard. And bonus – he just emailed me the recipe and I’ll test and shoot it for you in the next few weeks. Bless!
The offering this week is below. I’m glad you’re here and invite you to take what you’d like. Enjoy this fine day!
• This week’s long read has me astounded: Think Debtors Prisons Are A Thing of the Past? Not in Mississippi (The Marshall Project)
• A World Without Pain – read while I literally hug a full-blast heating pad into my lower abdomen. Being human is different for all of us… huh. (The New Yorker)
• It’s just tough every which way: The High Cost of Having a Baby in America (The Atlantic)
• I absolutely love this nudge: The Incredibly Happy Life of Larry David, TV’s Favorite Grouch. (GQ)
• I’m not a person interested in the Royals (do they need capitalization… I think yes), but I do find this compelling. It speaks to our appetite for public figures and good grief… we can imagine why a couple would say enough, right? Harry and Meghan Won’t Play The Game (The Atlantic)
• I just this week celebrated my grandmother but I didn’t fully understand the importance of her scientific evolution until tonight. As a kid I thought it was mostly about extra hugs and sneaking me chocolate before dinner: Why killer whales – and human – evolved menopause. (Arstechnica)
• It’s raining much of the weekend and I’m learning How to Make Yakamein. (Garden & Gun)
• A trusted friend recommended this relationship book to me and maybe you’re interested too: Eight Dates here on Amazon and here on IndieBound.
• I’ve had this dress as an open tab in my browser for weeks. Is this who I am? (Etsy)
• This week I did this yoga flow on my bedroom floor. Now you know. Yoga with Adriene: Hips and Lower Back Release. (YouTube)
• I’m just here to tell you that there’s a new season of Married At First Sight on Hulu and well… I’m sorry but knowledge is power. (Hulu)
That’s all for today!
My love to you.

Thank you for the links you share on your “Let it be Sunday” post. I feel they bring your readers together, no matter if we have many differences on other matters. And on this one, you commented about the movie A dog’s Purpose. I had just watched this movie, with my sister, during my trip back to the Midwest last month, where i celebrated the holiday with family, (along with spreading my Dad’s ashes with my siblings, after he unexpectedly passed away).

Get the dress! When you get to be in your sixties like I am, you will have great memories of the fun things you did while wearing it. Chess pie ohmyword yes please. And I made the yakamein last night, so yummy, but next time think I will add some matchstick carrots and maybe bok choy(would that be heresy?)

The initial scene of A Dog’s Purpose wrecked me – the very first dog life – how could they do that?

I am 110% here for Joy’s Dad’s chess pie.
Rebecca
Completely agree!!

Hi Joy, I feel like we are friends, I’ve been following you since the beginning. I enjoy your writing style with your sense of humor. Keep it coming! I’m visiting New Orleans for the first time this weekend. I’m meeting my daughter who will be there for a conference. We’ll only have three days to explore. Would you share a couple of inexpensive places to eat and a city tour for first timers as well as anything else you would call a must do. I know you’re not a travel agent…but you could be…for today. Are there any places that have signed copies of your cookbooks—-a souvenir I’d love to return home with. Love your posts, your recipes, and your photography. Thank you. Cyndie

If you search “New Orleans” in the search box she has lots of great suggestions and posts!
Cyndie
Thank Sarah. We used many of those suggestions!

Oh yea….get the dress. You are young and beautiful and you should go for it!
I am a little old and can’t do much physical activity. So I am trying to convince myself to go for it….. and love myself exactly as I am.
Just like Mr. Rogers taught us.

I for one am sick and tired of the Royals. The world is, maybe on the brink of a full war and Australia is burning but there is more press coverage about this Mexit. Unbelievable.
As a Canadian, I am also frustrated that we have to pay for the monarchy. Such an antiquated notion. If they leave the UK and move here, good for them but I hope that being ‘financially’ independent means that they will forego any Canadian $ for any part of their life including security. l

I love married at first sight! Well maybe love is too strong. I like watching it and seeing an inside peek at all of those relationships. What I do love is your Sunday things, your brown butter chocolate chip cookies, and the idea of you having a food network show (I saw your Instagram story and your appearance on the Christmas cookie show! Loved it!) Go, Joy, go!

MAFS…my very guilty pleasure I am sorry to say. I got hooked the very first season an can’t seem to give it up. I know there is so much going on behind the scenes we never see but I do find it interesting that 30% of the matched couples over the past season are still married and I believe there are 3 or 4 babies in the mix as well. I am guessing that is a better over all success rate than the Bachelor/Bachelorette franchise.
Arranged marriages have been a norm in some cultures for centuries.MAFS is just a modern twist I would say.
Can’t wait for your dad’s pie recipe. His sweet potato pie is a Thanksgiving staple at my dinner.

Summer’s coming … buy the dress!

I love to read about your relationship with your dad. It is so joyful and rad.
You’d rock the heck out of that dress.
I’m eager to read the articles you linked. Thank you. : )

The cake of your dad sounds perfect!
