Burnt Banana Chocolate Malted Milkshake

milkshake collage

I like you, and I think about you often.  Like… everyday.

I think about what kind of cookies you might like.  I think about what kind of soup you’ll want to make.  I think about vegan things for you.   I try to figure out gluten-free things… and I think about how you might like to make buttermilk pancakes for your kids this weekend.

Yesterday though… yesterday I thought only of myself.  I thought of me, and how much I could not live another second without a chocolate milkshake in my face.  I over-scooped a hearty portion of ice cream, I busted out my malt powder, and I fried up a banana with just a touch of butter.  See where I’m going with this?

Then… I counted the seconds until I could drink the milkshake.  Hurry hurry hurry.  These pictures were taken in haste.  That’s no lie.

three

two

Two seconds…

I’m so freaking impatient.

You know what a chocolate milkshake looks like, don’t you.  All of this is really just a formality.

one.

Aaaaand drink.  Watch your toes.  This cat is a monster.

What does a Burnt Banana Chocolate Malt taste like?  Um… banana, chocolate, and whoppers, and heaven, and delicious.

You can, of course, skip the malt, use vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup, use unburnt bananas, add bourbon, or use vanilla frozen yogurt instead of chocolate ice cream…. You can do anything you want.  Don’t add spinach; that would probably ruin everything.

Burnt Banana Chocolate Malted Milkshake

Makes: 2 milkshakes

Print this Recipe!

1 1/2 cups chocolate ice cream (I used 4 large scoops of ice cream)

3/4 cup milk (any fat content)

1 banana

2 tablespoons malt powder

Melt butter in a small saute pan over medium heat.  Peel banana and spice into small circles, or into two long banana halves.  Cook the bananas until browned and almost brunt, flip and cook on both sides.  Remove the bananas from the pan and let cool before blending into the milkshake.
When the bananas have cooled, place in a blender with the chocolate ice cream, milk, and malt powder.  Blend on high until smooth.  Pour into two large glasses and enjoy immediately.

  1. Thank you, Joy!
A ‘Thank you’ all the way from India!
I love chocolate and I love bananas……. the rest is sorted! :)

  2. I made this without the malt with 1 c 1% milk and two scoops of ice cream and it made two perfect shakes. I love, loved the banana in it and I will definitely make it again when I have malt.

  3. OMG I just made this. I didnt have malt so instead, I put coconut. and instead of chocolate ice cream I put Pralines and cream icecream. OMG IT WAS DELICIOUS. just what I needed today.
I will definitely make this again soon, I just need to get chocolate ice cream and malt. OH man this is gonna be great with burgers and fries.

  4. This sounds delicious! But, I just about choked on the spinach smoothie I’m drinking when I read the “don’t add spinach” part. Adding spinach makes me feel so much better about my unhealthy smoothie addiction. :)
But I mean…whatever helps ya sleep at night, right?

  5. Oh my……I just….how had I never thought about caramelizing the bananas before putting them in to a shake before?? How marvellous! True, I really shouldn’t drink milkshakes as they always seem to make me sick….but I would surely get sick if I DIDN’T have one of these…so really…

  6. Finally warm enough in STL that I made this for myself tonight…myself and nobody else. And now my life will be divided into the time before I fried a banana in butter and blended it with chocolate ice cream and after I fried a banana in butter and blended it with chocolate ice cream.

  7. This looks delicious. I’d skip the malt, but if I didn’t skip it then I wouldn’t need to share with the husband creature.

Or maybe I’ll use some instant espresso powder, skip the malt and still have it all to myself!

  8. HI. I am not sure where to find malt powder. Can I substitute it for something else or Can I leave it out completely without changing the flavor that you experieced? I want my milkshake to taste just as good as yours looks.
    Thanks!

    1. it should be near the coffee in the grocery store. i think the shake would be good either way, but i’d definitely recommend malt powder!

  9. Oh for goodness sakes, you… Joy, yes you.

I want to be a kid, now. And I want to make these for my 4-year old, this weekend. And you know what? I’m not sure which one of us will be more excited about it. I also think you would probably be, just about the most awesome babysitter in the world (I’m just saying!).

I desperately need to get my mommy block fixed. It stops me from thinking of such genius.

  10. Don’t worry Joy, we really are livin’ the good life in the 310! We are blessed to be able to wear shorts this time of year and the envy is totally understandable.

  11. Oh sheesh . . . this look delightful. I’m about to go make this with my chocolate coconut milk ice cream right now. I’m gone. Not that I live in a place where milkshakes are acceptable yet, but ya know . . . whatever.
Also, in my efforts to not be insanely jealous that you are wearing shorts (cute shorts, btw), I’m just going to say that I get to wear scarves a lot, my leg warmers (which are hot, I mean, who are we kidding?) non-stop, and sweater dresses. So there.
That didn’t work. I’m still jealous of yo’ sunshine.
    Oh, by the way . . .
    https://cheekybaker.weebly.com/2/post/2011/02/chocolate-coconut-milk-ice-cream.html

  12. Okay, I can get over the shorts since I live in NC. I can forgive the shorts. What I cannot forgive are those cute skinny legs in those shorts! How does one maintain such skinny legs with all the deliciousness that abounds on your blog and in your home? I too love the baking, but a picture of my legs, in shorts or otherwise, will never blacken the pages of my blog.
    Lucky you.
(But seriously, that’s just not fair.)
    :)

  13. OMG!
I really can’t wait to try this delectable treat but my daughter said I may not until she is home from college… I’m finding it hard to follow this request. I mean, maybe I should “test” it to make sure we should make it when she gets home for the summer? Maybe I should try the different variations to see which one I think she would like the best? You know, that way I could have the best ingredients on hand when she gets home? I’m only considering this because I love her so much.

    I almost have myself convinced!

  14. Your kitty is so floofy! I miss my kitties, and my dairy. My daughter is nursing and can’t handle me eating any dairy, and for the first time in my life I am kittyless. I have been considering buying coconut milk ice cream in spite of the exorbitant price. I think this may be the recipe for it!

  15. All I can say is Thank Goodness Breyer’s makes a Lactose Free Ice Cream! It only comes in Vanilla but hey that is what chocolate syrup is for right! Love the recipes and commentary. Hit 90 here the other day, I guess it is time for a tan!

  16. Joy, I love you with the heat of thousand suns but you are killing me here. I am studying for midterms and your website was supposed to be the 5 min break – now I need to run to trader joe’s for ice cream and bananas. Unless you deliver to culver city ?! I mean … you OWE me for all that deliciousness you’re posting

  17. Is that coffee table from IKEA?
I think I have the same one but in a different color… And I live on the other side of the world!!

Love the cat! (I also have a cat, but in a different color :-))
Love bananas & chocolate! Love your blog!!

  18. Looks yummmy.. I think I’ll give this a try! Also, slight typo….you said you “peel bananas and SPICE into small circles…”. Maybe supposed to be “slice” ? I figure it was the excitement from the milkshake that made that happen :P.

  19. Just wanting to say that I love your cookie sheet too. To me it says “serious baker here.” Absolutely not a distraction. It works perfectly.

      1. Yeah! Bananas release a gas (ethylene) that causes other plants to ripen faster!
That’s why they have those fruit bowls with the tall hooks – so bananas can be kept separate!

        1. It was my understanding that oranges cause banana’s to ripen faster. So if you have green bananas that you want to ripen faster you keep them in the fruit bowl, if they are ripe and you don’t want them to brown you take them out of the fruit bowl

  20. Hi Joy,
Im sure you’v eheard this before but your blog is a JOY to read :)
Ive only just discovered there are blogs out there everywhere but Im lovin it and yours is great.
    Cheers, Lyn

  21. Delicious! I used vanilla ice cream and chocolate malt powder (ovaltine). The caramelized bananas make all the difference. Wow!

  22. Joy- whenever I need to make a tasty treat I turn to your site for a recipe. Last night I made the gooey chocolate cakes and topped them with blueberries and strawberries. I love that I can count on your recipes to be so awesome every time. Everything I have made from your site it sooooooo goooooood! I really appreciate you. Thanks. :)

  23. Wow….burnt banana, malt, chocolate…..all in one milkshake!! Genius! I am already thinking this makes more like one serving…for me only…..forget the two serving thingie!

  24. u did it again Joy!Milkshakes are my favourite and if I can have anything I want, I would have a milkshake at every meal, but of course that’s not possible..doesn’t go well for my waistline.
Will definitely use vanilla ice cream instead!

  25. Oh, sweet lord, I am relieved that those are bananas and not bacon…. Before reading, I was seriously doubting how one’s heart might survive such a thing!

  26. Joy, I think frying your bananas before adding them to a shake is the most phenomenal idea I’ve heard in a while! I had fried plantains (when ripe, even better than bananas!) made by an Ecuadorian housewife once- that was 4 years ago and it’s still my fave dessert… I’m thinkin I may have to try these. You might want to try fried plantains, if you haven’t already!

  27. Really like your burn banana chocolate malted milkshake recipe. Enjoyed the quick process and description you used to come up with this creative and delicious drink. Have not considered frying bananas and then adding up to a milkshake. Imagine the process enhances the flavor, worth trying. Do like the way you use the mason jars, they make great beverage containers. Nice cat.

  28. taylor s, that’s exactly what I was thinking. shorts and a big bowl of fresh fruit; she’s living the good life. here in mn shorts will be another month in the waiting, but malts are yummy at any temperature.

      1. joy! it wasn’t your fault.. really :) who knew people would get so jealous over a pair of shorts right? they just love your legs and are jealous of your humidity. i know a ton of people can’t feel the heat, but it’s not like you can stop it. the heat is there no matter what and joy, you are not at fault. you live in LA so like duh! it’s warm there! don’t worry. kitty kitty and i will help :P

  29. i was all about this post until i realized you’re wearing shorts in that photo… if its nice enough to wear shorts there now im upset and we’re no longer friends. its still 40 here.

  30. OMG i just ran across mexico city looking for malt powder to try this, (it’s almost imposible to find that stuff here >.<) and wow it tastes awesome o=!!!!

  31. I’m not a fan of malt, but a chocolate milkshake does sound like the best idea right now. I should probably finish my vodka first. ;)

And I love the idea of those Kerr mason jars. It’s so quaint. <3

  32. Just made this, and it’s sooooooo good. Husband made similar, but with peanutbutter insteadof malt. Both ways are amazingly delicious! Thanks, Joy!

  33. cute coffee table. it looks much sturdier than your old one that collapsed! also i woke up early this morning and made your grapefruit honey scone thingies, but i used an orange instead. perfect way to start the day! you’re awesome joy : )

  34. This looks absofreaking amazing. The first day the temperature hits 80, I have a date with this recipe. But right now, it is still chilly in STL. Boo.

  35. i think it’s time i need to made the switch from hot chocolate to milkshakes even if the weather outside won’t cooperate but realistically, it’s seattle so it’s quite possible if i’m waiting on the weather, i’ll be waiting til july to have a milkshake (forgive my bitter rant, i just need sunshine. and quite possibly this milk shake)

by the way, i love your new banner – i’m feelin the colours.

  36. did you just put a canning jar on your osterizer? my aunt used to do that (because she broke the original jar that came with the machine) BTW, oh would you, could you break out the barkeeper’s friend and polish up your cookie sheet? i’d do it for you if i lived in your building. whenever the burnt cookie sheet is in the shot, i find it so distracting. just saying…

    1. no… no canning jar on top of the blender.. though that’s a smarty-pants move.
and no… i’m totally into my cookie sheet looking worn and used just the way it is. i love it.

  37. I’m kinda loving the look of your house. Can you put up more pictures of your place? I’m buying a house and looking for inspiration to decorate it!

  38. i totally make protein shakes like this—EVERYDAY…heavenly delights. i use chocolate protein powder though and banana and ice and milk. YUMMMM

  39. the moment I saw the words “burnt banana” I had a huge grin on my face. I love cooked/burnt naners. Your kitty is soooo purty! love the fur. can’t believe I used to be a cat-hater. now i love ’em :D have a blessed day!

  40. My girl crush on you grew 10 sizes when I saw Bust magazine in your pile of books/mags. You are my internet hero. Have a great weekend!

Oh. The milkshake looks amazing too.

  41. I got quite a chuckle out of this one!

You can always tell the posts where I really love the food, because the pictures aren’t quite as nice and they might be a little shaky…low blood sugar, don’t you know!

  42. Hey! Nice legs! Maybe I should start bicycling everywhere again :) Good for you that you can count to 2.5 before downing your food, I almost ALWAYS forget until after I’ve eaten half! :D PS: I’d bite your toes too if you chained me under your table… LOL! It DOES look like the red headed child is tethered!
    *love*

  43. This looks like HEAVEN!!! I love all things burnt, it’s like you made this especially for me :)

    Love,
    Kelly

PS – I have an orange kitty. He’ll be 3 years old this month. He was a demon kitty for the first 18 months to a year, now he is the coolest cat ever. I promise he’ll get better :)

  44. I am sending this recipe to my son. He was “burning” bananas, peanut butter and nutella to create a sandwich something he was craving. He liked it but I think he will like your shake better! Although he might add peanut butter.

  45. Awww… That milkshake is wrapped in a blanket and looks so good. It reminds of one of those days where I just want to be really lazy and curl up (like your little friend there) on the sofa with a good book.

  46. Thanks Joy for thinking of me. See, I can’t enjoy regular bananas anymore. They make me ill if they are raw. It makes making smoothies all the more difficult. This is something I can do and share with the family. Great way to get a bit of calcium and potassium, right? Cheers.

  47. I soooo love reading your posts, and your pics are awesome! This one was great… loved the part where you said u know what a shake looks like, don’t read the rest of this post… LOL!

  48. Dear Joy,

How did you know I love all things burnt? Toast, bananas, the occasionally accidental summer skin burn. This looks like a perfectly acceptable breakfast to me. And it’s gluten free. See you were thinking of us.

Also, I am slightly jealous of your short wearing. I live in Vancouver, B.C. and well it’s not snowing, but it rains alot. People look at me funny when I wear shorts right now.

Kitten is looking mighty handsome and vicious in that picture. I have the same toy for my kitties and they turn in rabit tiger-blood animals when they play with it. I think it’s a sign. No toys like that when bare legs are around.

    Jen

  49. I’m sorry, but you’re going to have to stop including that adorable little furball in pictures because as soon as I see his sweet little face, I totally forget about your amazing recipe and all i want to do is squeeze him!!!

(and yeah, that means your cat is cute enough to make a preggo forget about chocolate)

  50. That looks delicious! I wish I had some ice cream to make one. And I love your toe monster. He looks just like mine! (Except mine is a leg monster who attacks you as you walk by.)

  51. If I made those bananas I don’t know that they would make it into the shake, I would probably eat them before they had a chance. Oh and adding some bourbon to the mix sounds pretty great, I sure do like the way you think :)

  52. That looks soooooooo delicious!

Joy, for your next recipe, could you teach us how to make the one-year-old’s birthday cake featured on Teen Mom 2? I’m not sure I can go another week without it.

  53. That butter-burned banana is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. I am inclined to skip the shake entirely and munch on golden, crisp slices of banana.

Yes, I think that sounds rather splendid.

  54. i love how your cat’s just lying there like “there is NOOOO way baby you are drinking ALL of that goodness”

he musta licked the bottom clean, no?

what a cute mushy ball of fur and soft little monsterness….

if you played an april fools joke on him would he FREAK OUT?! worth testing? possibly… :P

  55. friends? letta me see:

    bananas? check.
CHOCOLATE- holy CHOCO ICE CREAM?!- check check check.
    milkkkk- checkeroo
    cat- check checky

love your little monster. and how ridiculous I AM with my heat turned on, shivering at home while you’re @ LA, awesome as can be, in shorts that flatter your legs. just amazing joy. and nutritional!

    happy april fools day? peace~

  56. ahhh! I love that you’re wearing shorts and making cold drinks, when it’s 30 deg and snowing here in NH. JEALOUS!!

  57. …Orrrrr, you could skip the malt, skip the ice cream and chocolate syrup, skip the bananas all together and just have bourbon! Yay! *giggle*

…Okay, not. Seriously, this just sounds so yummy and how chic are you with the jar and the tied napkin? That is so over-the-top cute! :o)

…Thank you for the recipe! I will be trying this soon!

    …Blessings… :o)

  58. Two servings? Really? I’m thinking more like one, particularly if it has chocolate and banana and malt. I am working from home today . . . I know what I”m having for lunch!

  59. My boyfriend’s dad has a birthday coming up and he loves milkshakes…at least I’m pretty sure he does. Anyway, if I’m right this may be what I contribute to the party!

  60. I want one and it’s only 5:30am and I’m on my way to work. Perhaps as a friday night dessert…….yummmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  61. I’m all over that for this weekend! By the way, for anyone living in Europe,Horlicks is is a malt powder that for some reason is marketed as a late-night drink for children.

  62. Well, you might think you were only thinking of yourself. But I know you were thinking of me, a new-reader-you’ve-probably-never-even-seen-before. This blog is fabulous! Fried bananas are one of my favorite desserts. So I can’t wait to try them in a milkshake.

Also, I like meringue cookies and chocolate chip ones that stay chewy and not crispy.
    And potato & leek soup.
Thanks for thinking of me. ;)

  63. Love love LOVE this post!!! I’ll make one of these right this afternoon! Can’t wait…
Love your blog by the way!! Greetings from Switzerland!

  64. Ohh nooo I just brushed my teeth before bed….I am now seriously craving this milkshake!! I have no ice cream but a banana and chunk of chocolate will have to do until I can get to the store. You are brilliant Joy!

  65. Chocolate and banana are a match made in heaven, me likes. (Funny, I have exactly the same little metal (silver?) vase as the one you have on the table. And I live in Finland. Got it from my mother-in-law who actually has lived in the US so maybe she got it from there.)

  66. Fact: whenever I order a milk shake, it’s always banana. Screw that, I’m making my own! As in, this. I still need to experience malt outside of Whoppers.

p.s. I like your shoes, glasses, and heart your monster cat.
