Let It Be Sunday!

Coconut Whipped Cream

[H]ow has your week been? I hope youโ€™re all eased into the weekend and youโ€™re feeling happy, well, and making your own coconut whipped cream.

Iโ€™ve been visiting Philadelphia again this week.  The days are so warm and gorgeous, I feel like everyone that spent a cold cold Winter here deserves these pretty days much more than me.  Iโ€™m soaking it all in just the same.

While you meander through these links, just know that Iโ€™m here trying to figure out the easiest, most approachable way for us to make fried chicken at home.  I have a major craving.  Iโ€™ll solve this for all of us.

The Internet for our knowing:

โ€ข  This week Congress reworked the post 9/11 Patriot Act.  This is a big deal because most of us werenโ€™t paying attention to the details of US surveillance until Edward Snowden asked us to pay attention.

โ€ข  NYT Op Ed:  Edward Snowden.

โ€ข  Washington Post journalist Jason Rezaian has been jailed in Iran, without being charged, for nearly a year.

โ€ข  Whatโ€™s Causing Baltimoreโ€™s Crime Spike?

โ€ข  Judge This: the power of first impressions. Clarity or mystery, which do you choose?

โ€ข  Men that take up more than one seat on a train because they think they deserve a whole lotta leg spread vs. lady who simply wants a seat.  Iโ€™ve Been Sitting On Manspreaders For The Last Month and I Have Never Felt More Free.

โ€ข  Google wants to count the calories in your Instagram food porn.  Please no.

โ€ข  How my doppelgรคnger used the Internet to find a befriend me.  Soโ€ฆ just for future reference, if you look exactly like me, cool.    No need to stage a photo, Iโ€™ll take your word for it.  If, however, you have Tronโ€™s doppelgรคnger, heโ€™s happily accepting all staged photos and emails.

โ€ข  How Many Steps A Day Should You Really Walk?

โ€ข  Iโ€™m interested in this book:  The Good Gut. The scientific authors are trying to keep our good body bacteria from going extinct.  The key? All the fiber all the time.

โ€ข  Enough with the love locks.  Theyโ€™re really really heavy.

โ€ข  I had no idea I should be braising radishes!  From The Kitchn: Braised Radishes with Shallots and Bacon.

โ€ข  Roasted Strawberry and Toasted Coconut Popsicles!  Itโ€™s time for popsicle diet.

Have a happy day!

  1. We need a super amazing set of popsicle molds for my toddler (aka Cinderella). Itโ€™s already too flipping hot in Portland and sheโ€™s never had a legitimate popsicle, so post some amazing popsicles and a link to a great (non-BPA, etcโ€ฆ is metal too cold?) popsicle form, dear darling adorable beloved slender Joy! Thank you! XO

  2. My city has a bridge railing specifically built by the mayor to be used for the lovelocks. I donโ€™t see the beauty in them. I think they look filthy because of the rust. I donโ€™t understand why people love doing it.

  3. Joy I love your site and I love that you do a roundup of links on Sunday, but Iโ€™m really disappointed to see an editorial from Edward Snowden here. He is not a hero. He is an extreme narcissist whose unlawful actions have hurt many.

  4. Joy, I would also like to add something if I may: the case of Saeed Abedini. He has been jailed in Iran since 2012 (if I remember correctly) with no hope of getting out. Heโ€™s an American and itโ€™s heartbreaking how little our government is doing for him. Just Google him, yโ€™all. Just thought Iโ€™d share and great roundup today!

  5. Joy, this is such a great roundup!

I especially loved the link about manspreading. It reminds me of a TED talk I saw about power poses (spreading out like that is a way to show power, and itโ€™s so interesting that men do that while many women cross their legsโ€ฆ and arms!).

Being 31 weeks pregnant, Iโ€™ve been thinking about the issue of bus/train seat etiquette a lot lately. Itโ€™s been interesting to observe how I get treated. Starting around 2 weeks ago, most people started moving to let me sit. But some people still take two seats, or sit on the outside seat, blocking the inside seat. And, interestingly, here in San Francisco the MUNI buses donโ€™t show a pregnant woman on the signs to reserve the front seats for people with disabilities (BART does). It also got me wondering about all those young men who always have to stand. What if one of them has some sort of illness or recent injury that we canโ€™t see? Itโ€™s just kind of a weird system in many ways.

I also loved the link about first impressions. I have never tried to lead with mysteryโ€ฆ Iโ€™m not sure I could pull that off!

Have a great rest of your weekend.

  6. Please donโ€™t count calories Google!! It will just add the guilt, just let us enjoy our desserts! Must try that coconut whipped cream, looks so good!!

  7. Hi Joy!

Although Iโ€™ve faithfully followed you for some time now, Iโ€™m not a commenter so my face/voice will be new to you. But this morning I just couldnโ€™t contain myself anymore. I adore your writing and your recipes but whatโ€™s made me finally expose myself this morning is so that I can thank you for these Sunday posts. The links you share are always so intellectually and happiness-inspiring. The gut bacteria and the manspreading articles alone have made my day.

Thank you for your incredible site, lovely books, and inspiring sharing.

  8. Joy, what a great roundup! Iโ€™m so glad I discovered your blog!

I especially like the one about manspreaders. It makes me think about a TED talk on power posesโ€“ taking up more space is one way to indicate your power. So interesting that men mostly sit that way while we women cross our legs and maybe our arms tooโ€ฆ (Guilty as charged.)

Iโ€™ve been thinking about bus/train etiquette for a while now since Iโ€™m 31 weeks pregnant. It was only about two weeks ago that (some) people started ceding their seats to me. But then I wonder, maybe some of these young, fit looking men who are expected to stand actually have recently had an injury we canโ€™t see, for example? Certainly no one knew or offered to stand when I was 9 weeks pregnant, for example, even though I felt worse then in many ways.

  9. Oh coconut whip cream just bury me in it YUM. Yes I will try the braised radishes with bacon shallots and maybe put the coconut whip cream on it. Just kidding!!!! Ah the power of first impressions interesting. Iโ€™m sure there are times you judge people and things without really giving them a chance. So now I try and make the time to get to know people, products and whatever comes across my path. Wouldnโ€™t want to miss out on something good in my life and on that note have a great week Joy. Paulette

  10. What brings you to Philly? Itโ€™s my hometown so Iโ€™m always happy to hear people are enjoying it. I hope you share more about your Philly adventures.
