Hello my friends!
It’s Father’s Day and I take comfort in the fact that I finally figured out a gift that my dad needs and wants. I got him a fancy shave kit situation (at the suggestion from my mother) and I think I’ve scored a win. To be fair, growing up my dad always had a beard and he seemed to be thoroughly satisfied with the painted rocks I gave him as paperweights between the ages of 4 and 14. Why mess with a good thing? One year the paperweights had yarn and goggly eyes and I’m pretty sure that’s the rock paperweight he still has on his desk. What can I say, he’s worth it. And now he’s got the luxury of a good shave? Win.
I’ve been in Aspen for the Food and Wine Classic this week and a few things are true: Aspen is fancy. Apsen will take your breath away, literally. Tell me a nosebleed is normal. I’ve had the opportunity to meet some of my favorite chefs and it’s been tremendously inspiring.
I hope this finds you happy and well and ready for an easy Sunday. Here are some notes from the week. Rather heavy because life is that sometimes. We have to carry both.
• ‘Angels’ to block Westboro Baptist Church’s protest at Orlando memorial. Your cruelty isn’t masked by religion and is combatted by love and strength and white fabric and plastic piping.
• “Hate doesn’t have a creed, race or religion, it is poisonous.” Heavy hearted. Heavy hearted. Jo Cox, Labour MP for Batley and Spen (we’re talking about British government here), mother and wife is murdered.
• Game 7 of that big ol’ basketball is game tonight, but here’s a piece of maybe unknown humanity: Steve Kerr and his mother talk about the legacy of his father’s assassination.
• What I Saw In Syria in photos and video.
• If you want to know, go see for yourself. Dave Eggers at a Donald Trump Rally
• My sister’s friend Yitka Winn ran an Ultra Fiord Race in Patagonia and please read all about it: Beautiful, Cruel Patagonia
• What it would look like to have iPhones made in America: The All-American iPhone.
• An Unhealthy Obsession: a year of following healthy-living blogs. Thank you Marian. Glad you’re back on butter… and I know, blogs have gotten weird these days.
• This made me cry and makes it an important thing for you to read. Five Bicycles in Kalamazoo. I see ghost bikes all over New Orleans and they break my heart. We have to be more careful and conscious because we all matter. And also.. texting and driving is a no always. Always.
• The museum of broken relationships. Is this where I donate my tony butterfly jewelry box and mixed tape with a xerox of parrots on the case? Ok good.
• Deb of Smitten Kitchen went away to Mexico City and brought us back the most lovely pictures and these Weekday Nachos.
• Food and Wine’s Best New Chef’s of 2016 is exciting! We’ve got New Orleans representing with Michael Gulotta of MoPho and Kris Yenbamroong of Night + Market and Song.
I hope you enjoy this day. Let the sun shine in.

Joy, you should check out the restaurant We’ve Got Soul (www.wevegotsoul.com) in the Riverbend area of NOLA. I’ve been here 6 years and it’s the best supper I’ve had here so far. Delicious!! You will not be disappointed. Menu changes weekly and its always great.

Thank you, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, for using “literally” in a way that makes sense! I noticed, and I appreciated. Also, the Food & Wine Classic sounds amazing and I definitely held my breath for a surprise podcast with you and your maj, but alas. Still looks like a great time. :) xoxo

Ha! Your link about the healthy living blogs and then yesterday this post about taking your blender with you on vacation…I really thought it was a joke, but of course it wasn’t. https://www.100daysofrealfood.com/2016/06/20/green-smoothies-stay-healthy-traveling/

The nosebleeds are normal… :/
Still not fun though.

I applaud you for having weighty and important topics on your end-of-the-week recaps, the internet is great for fun and games but that’s not all it should be about and I’m always happy to see food bloggers addressing more serious issues. It seems like social issues seem to be more your thing but maybe you’ll happen to touch upon sustainability? I’d certainly welcome it. Have a lovely weekend!

Love this post and that you found the perfect gift for your dad what a great idea for the shaving kit! Xo

I live in Kalamazoo. This happened on the same road I live on, about 5 miles away. Too much tragedy here lately. Perhaps the saddest part is it could have been prevented. I mean three separate phone calls reported that he was driving erratically but police didn’t seem to be making much of an effort to find him.

It really breaks my heart. I’m so sorry for the loss in your community.

Beautiful writing and a great perspective of reflection on the previous week. Thanks for your insight.

This week was definitely a rough one. Time to really dig in and figure out how we want are world (big and small) to be.

Nothing like some good old fashioned butter and cream. I live in Dordogne, heart of duck fat, foie gras, butter, cream, cheese, crusty bread and the best fresh fruit and locally grown, sustainable and bio veggies and we have the least heart disease in France and one of the longest lifespans. Go butter and duck fat!!!!
